I have recently became interested in sea glass after finding a few beautiful peices when I ordered this book. I was not dissappointed! This book is very informational and beautifully illustrated. I found a match for a peice I had found in the book, allowing me to date the peice.

I love this book and will keep in on my coffee table along with my display of my precious finds! It's a joy just to flip through and just look at the pictures.

My wife and I collect sea glass daily on the Oregon coast. This book did give us a good explaination of what types and the possible origin of glass we've found. Lots of pictures to compare the various colors of sea glass which indicates rare to common. A good reference book for sea glass collectors.

I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter who has recently taken up the hobby of finding sea glass. We go to the beach every Sunday and carefully look for the tiny pieces of sea glass. Each time we find one it is like a small treasure that she takes home and stores in a pretty glass jar. We never knew the history or differing types of sea glass. This book is as informative as it is beautiful. She looks at the book over and over. The book is like an adventure to the sea - you see something different every time you look at it.

I was handed Pure Sea Glass:Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems and asked to review it for an on line magazine I used to write for. Until then I had little or no interest in the bits of glass I occasionally picked up along the beaches visited in the course of my travels.

After reading the book, accomplished in one evening, I went looking for that jar of glass stashed somewhere in the garage and dumped it out on the table so that I could better sort through and identify the various colors and pieces, most new but some very old like a small lavendar triangle picked up along the Oregon Coast and a very dark blue from Hawaii.

Since, I've become an avid collector of beach glass and secret places to find it. What great fun! A good read, informative and totally satisfying.

Great book. The photographs were excellent and the information about the origin of sea glass and where it is most likely to appear on the beach was well presented. Our 14 year old enjoyed learning more about sea glass just as we did.

I plan to buy copies for all our coastal friends as house warming gifts this year.

Richard LaMotte did a wonder-filled job of putting together this informative and comprehensive book on sea glass. I honestly have enjoyed reading every page. I had no idea that there was so much history hidden in every piece of glass, and even though I have collected glass over the years, I never understood the relationship between winds and tides and the weather that deposits these beautiful little gems on our shores. Mr. LaMotte shares all this knowldege with such passion that reading his book not only feed my intellect but also inspired the beachcomber in me. And, the photographs are simply beautiful. Every image works to support as well as illustrate all the topics that are being discussed. The entire book is truly a piece of art in itself. I will read and re-read this book. It is a must for anyone and everyone who loves sea glass.

I mean really, what's not to like. What could possibly be wrong with a book written about such a benign pastime. It almost sounds green - it is green! Picture this, you're at the seashore, strolling casually along, eyes to the sand, and you're intentionally removing pieces of glass (from broken bottles, etc.) that other, assumedly uncaring folk (litterbugs actually) have strewn into the sea. And we've made a sport of it too! Honestly though this is a nice book with loads of information, and really nice photos. The best of its genre I think. Makes me almost wish I lived by an open stretch of convenient beach.

I purchased this book after my children (4, 5) developed an interest in collecting sea glass after finding their first pieces on the beach. This summer we collected pounds of the stuff on vacation, and the children couldn't wait to get home to the book to see if they had found any rare colors (we found gray, pink and black!).

The photos are beautiful and the information is so comprehensive and interesting that I often find myself toting it round the house to browse its pages. It tells you about colors, where the glass may have come from, what the glass may have been before it became a shard, and countless other fascinating tidbits.

It's such a lovely book that it sits on the table at the entrance to my home with an apothecary jar containing our favorite pieces of sea glass next to it.

I highly recommend it as a beautiful and interesting book and as a great reference. Now if I could just find that elusive piece of red or orange sea glass!

Pure Sea Glass by Richard LaMotte is an awesome book. If you are into sea glass or want to get into it or are curious about just what on earth sea glass is...this is the book you need. It has interesting, historical facts, gorgeous, close-up photos, and is extremely well-researched. I have collected Sea Glass my whole life, becaue it was "pretty". (We always called it smooth glass). There is soooo much more to this interesting glass than just its' pretty looks. Mr. LaMotte offers detailed descriptions of the chemical compositions of various glasses and a unique look at the history of glass ware. And what a thrill to learn that I own several extremely rare pieces! Who knew? Check this book out...you'll be pleasantly surprised. It also makes a great coffee table book for those of you that don't really want to read anything but want a beautiful book on your table!

This is a beautiful book. The photography is wonderful. To be honest, I have only skimmed through it. I'm looking forward to reading it front to back. I also own Sea Glass Chronicles by C.S Lambert and Pat Hanbery, which is a great book for the sea glass collector. Pure Sea Glass takes the casual collector a step further in covering the history, conditioning, styles, and rarity appraisal of found sea glass. It is both a great coffee table book, as well as good resource for the collector. It would make a great gift for the serious collector or anyone who just enjoys wandering the beach with thier eyes down.

(Hide Review...)  "Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems"
Reviewer Permalink
I was born in a coastal town and have always loved the ocean, walking on the beach, sailing - almost everything that has to do with the sea. When I was a little girl, my mother used to take me for walks along the coast, especially after a storm, to see what strange and interesting items had washed up on shore. So it is surprising that I have never collected sea glass, until recently that is. I was working on a craft project for a gift and thought that a few pieces of sea glass would make a beautiful and meaningful addition. Once I looked into acquiring the glass my interest peaked. So before I went any further, I bought a copy of Richard LaMotte's renowned book "Pure Sea Glass: Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems" on the advice of a longtime collector and jewelry maker.

This is an excellent volume, especially for beginners who are interested in learning about, searching for and collecting sea glass. A major added attraction is that there are over 150 exquisite and elegant photographs by Celia Pearson included here, presenting some of the beat specimens ever collected, along with a vast array of classical glassware from around the world that is often its source. The visuals are displayed in a manner that reminds me of Japanese Zen aesthetics. I am not a big coffee table book person, but my copy is on my table and most people who sit in my living room for longer than 15 minutes usually pick it up and peruse with delight.

The book is a comprehensive guide, chock full of information on finding and identifying these gems, the bits of aged glass, enhanced by years beneath the sea or caught in the tides that wash our coasts. There are 224 pages with chapters on the history of sea glass and the history of sand, (fascinating), different types of glass, (bottles, containers, tableware, utility and flat glass, like window glass - plain and stained, marbles, insulators and bonfire glass - from ship and shore, etc.), and appraising rarity, along with many other interesting topics.

So I am hooked. After a recent hurricane I made a day trip to Montauk, NY, and actually found some wonderful pieces on the beach at low tide - one a real jewel!

Mr. LaMotte is a native of southeastern Virginia and now lives on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He has been collecting for decades. His wife, Nancy, started a sea glass jewelry business using shards from nearby Chesapeake Bay. Ms. Pearson is a professional and fine art photographer with more than 25 years experience.

I recommend this superb book to everyone who appreciates art and finds delight in learning about the unusual. One does not have to be a collector to enjoy "Pure Sea Glass." It also makes a great gift. ENJOY!

Title: PURE SEA GLASS

Author: Richard LaMotte with photography by Celia Pearson

Every man, woman or child that has walked the beach and collected tiny pieces of sea worn glass will find long lost memories resurfacing as they read this book.
Sea Glass is something that everyone is familiar with and yet knows very little about. Much to my astonishment, I have discovered, since reading this book that there is even a Sea Glass Festival held in Rockport, Ma. every year. This fascinating coffee table book provides a comprehensive reference on sea glass as well as a soothing, tranquil visit to the seashore through its wonderfully executed photographs.
Readers learn how sea glass is transformed by the rolling waves; natural elements developing its frosted patina and fascinating color. There is a section on antique bottles, containers and collectibles. This reviewer was spellbound by the information found in this book. The tenth chapter discusses grading of color and rarity, aging and typing the various sea glass specimens. The scenes of seacoasts and beaches are comforting to the soul. The various strategically placed quotes throughout the book add to its appeal. The conclusion on the last page:
Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better. Albert Einstein

Author Richard LaMotte resides in Maryland with his wife Nancy who has started a sea-glass jewelry business. While researching for a lecture, he began his in-depth research on this fascinating subject. The result is this book. Photographer, Celia Pearson has been a professional photographer for over twenty years. Having spent her childhood days on the coast of Maine, her love of the subject and the coast is evident in her work.
This book is going to remain in my personal collection and now I look at a piece of sea glass in a different more intense light. Highly recommended as a gift to friends, family and yourself. Shirley Roe, Allbooks Reviews.
