I purchased 3 of these books for me and my two daughters for xmas. It is really informative and I keep it out and get a lot of great ideas. I get e-mails everyday from Hungry Girl and it is so nice to have a book at hand to remember a lot of the things I would like to try. It was worth the investment.

Offers great alternatives and sneaky tricks of the trade to eat healthier but remain satisfied! 1 Downside is the use of Tofu SHirataki in so many recipes but it is offered in so little stores....for me there is only 1 store about 40 miles away that sells the stuff! Otherwise all the recipes I have tried are delicious and trick you into thinking you are eating the real thing....Try the Buffalo Chicken!

There's the Michael Pollan books...that help us to look at healthy eating, and the ethics and biology of food, the planet, and your body. Then there's the other end-- this sort of book-- that preaches Splenda (which has been proven to be destructive to the body and actually causes weight gain), processed ingredients, and all thing unnatural. Some people are obviously great fans of this book, but I found that some of the recipes were more punishment than pleasure, and downright revolting. I would also rather opt for the healthy approach where one actually eats real food and not plastic. And finally, not to be unkind-- but has anyone seen a photo of the author's husband, the producer of the Nickolodean shows? This is a very obese man. It's just a little strange that the author of a book on foods that keep you thin is married to someone who is so overweight-- and who is a public figure.

I looked thru the book and love it. The title described me and the women in my family perfect. I bought 4 and hope they enjoy it as much as I do. There's lots of ways to eat the foods you love and not have to burn off all those EXTRA calories.

Until this book, I totally despised cooking and lived off Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine. I thought I would give this book a try, and I'll admit it was mostly for the desserts. I've now made dozens of these recipes and while I'll admit there are some I'm not crazy about, others I definitely look forward to making again. They are easy to make, and best of all, they're high in fiber, high in protein, low in calories, and low in fat. I can't believe I'd never had butternut squash until I got this book. I've even gotten so that I've made my own recipes from some tweaks of these, such as strawberry muffins. I also love the fact that most of these recipes are either single serving recipes or easy to divide. I live alone and HATE dealing with leftovers!

HungryGirl is my savior!! I lost 30 pounds a while ago and I'm trying to keep it off. However, my PMS cravings can get so bad, I can eat like a 6" man and still be starving!! Thus, I've gained 8 pounds back. So now, instead of running to McDonald's or shoveling down a whole bag of chips when the cravings strike, I break out my HG cookbook! I'm a little surprised about the backlash on this book! I think this isn't a replacement for everyday eating, but a replacement for junkfoods when you just HAVE to have some! I don't like eating processed food, but I find that Lisa has found the lesser evil. I love the Faux Fudge! It's fantastic and tastes more sinful than it really is. :) Keep it up Lisa!

And honestly, you shouldn't expect diet food to taste exactly or better than the original! It's a level of compromise you have to come to terms with if you want your waist to stay the same.

Many of the recipes aren't even recipes -- very little actual food preparation involved. I read through the whole book twice and haven't really found anything I care to try. I like the attitude, but wouldn't buy it again.

I was thinking this would be a cook book for "real" women. I thought it would revel in the joys of having a normal figure. but, alas, it is the same old diet advice full of artificial sweeteners and non-fat foods. When are we going to learn that not everyone is supposed to look like a starving waif-like starlet. Real women eat real food! Real women have breasts and hips........and real men love them!

This book changed my life!!! I think the recipies are fast, inventive and taste awesome! I have lost 30 pounds and I owe it to this book! I also love the section that lists the "safe" things to eat in different cuisine restaurants as well as gas stations, long car rides. It really helps keep me on track no matter where I go.

Another huge bonus for those of us on Weight Watchers is that you can look up on line EVERY recipe in the book - get a picture and nutritional breakdown WITH the Points already figured out!! You can't beat it! My favorite recipe so far - "Lord of the Onion Rings". It's only two Weight Watcher points for the entire recipe!! I think this book would be a staple for any person on a diet and a bigger bonus for those of us on Weight Watchers!

I checked this book out from the Library, because I didn't want to commit to buying it until I was sure that I would actually use it. So far I've tried six of the recipes and every single one has been uncomplicated and very good.

Here's whate I love about it.
1) The single serving size is perfect if you're just cooking for one.
2) There are no exotic ingredients, just your average grocery store fare.
3) The recipes are low cal, but not lacking in taste.
4) Plenty of funny, quirky commits and surival guides through- out.
5) Quick and Easy, from prep to plate, nothing I've done so far has been more than 8-10 minutes.

I've been on a low cal, high protein, limited sugar plan for about 4 months and was really bored with all the meat, cheese and dairy. This cookbook has spiced things up. I'm very pleased with everything that I've tried so far. The best thing? I've started making smoothies and I've discovered soy. Who would've thought that soy burgers would taste good, lol!

I am a fan of Hungry girl. She tries. She really tries to think of ways to lower the Weight watchers points values (usually adding more fiber) while not totally sacrificing taste. Some of these are definitely recipes that will not be repeated after I tried them. You have to try them anyway because you just don't know what will become a favorite. So far I am loving the yum yum brownies (better cold from the fridge after cooled), butternut squash fries (even though it is a total pain to peel and chop), and I am really looking forward to trying the shirataki noodles. You can buy shirataki noodles that have zero calories as well as the brand that she recommends. Bottom line, hungry girl is about experimentation with food and having fun while cooking and realizing that we have to lower calories and up the fiber in order to lower weight. Yes, some of the names are a bit much, but it is all in the spirit of trying to embrace cooking and your food while lowering calories. It certainly takes some of the sting out of it for sure. Remember that this is a DIET cookbook people, and then from that expectation your tastebuds might stop rebelling quite so loudly.

My wife and I purchased this book after seeing it at our local mall. The recipes where fast and easy to put together. I really liked the wraps and was able to make my own healthy variations. Overall, it helped us make better food, "Not Microwaved" ;) by introducing good reciepes that we will use at least 2-3 times a week.

This book is a lifesaver for people who are busy but still want a good, healthy, easy to make meal or snack. I love this book because the recipes are mostly for one person. This works out a lot better for me than following recipes in traditional cookbooks, which tend to make the recipes for 4 or more people. ( I know I can portion it out and save it for later, but this doesn't always work out for me.)

I'm a Weight Watchers member as well, and the Hungry Girl website lists the Points values for every recipe in the book. The Points are not listed inside the book, which I was a little disappointed over, so I just penciled them in lightly by each recipe. It's sort of a hassle, but worth it.

I don't consider myself a chef or anything, but these recipes are sooo easy! I highly recommend this book.

I picked up this book mostly because it seemed like it had recipes for foods that I might actually enjoy like philly cheese steak, spicy chicken sandwhich etc and promised easy, low-fat, high-fiber recipes.

I wish I had glanced over the ingredient lists a bit more before purchasing. The recipes rely very heavily on "faux" foods such as fat free cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, soy crumbles, etc

Of all the recipes I tried so far, only the cheese steak is decent and it's basically just sauteed onions and meat, so....

The Fiber One breading she uses frequently for chicken dishes is imo horrible. I guess if you just really want to get some extra fiber or you like the taste of Fiber One, it's fine, but I didn't care for it at all.

All the fake dairy products make most of the recipes bland, with weird textures. Some of them I caught myself thinking might be decent if I swapped out all the fake ingredients for smaller amounts of real food, but overall everything I tried ranged from just edible to horrible.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone other than people who are determined to eat nachos and fries and such and are willing to resort to all these "diet" versions of foods to keep the calories down.

I've tried many of the recipes in this book and I love how easy they are to make and how they actually taste good! The chicken pot pie recipe is my favorite so far. It's so easy and really delicious - tastes just like the fattier, calorie-laden frozen ones only better because you know how much healthier it is. I also really like that most recipes are for single servings (although easy enough to double, triple, etc).

If you are a subscriber, there is nothing in this book that is different from their emails. The recipes are good, and for someone who is on a diet, they have some good ideas for cutting calories. Some of the ideas I refuse to do, like use nonfat cheese, but other than that, it's great for someone looking to cut calories.

Im a big fan of this book! My favorite thing about it is the recipes are almost all designed to be one serving. I hate nothing like finding a lowfat/lowcal recipe that is only low fat because the serving is so small you need 4 to fill up. These recipes are made for real people, who are really hungry.
Im not currently on weight watchers, but its also a great book for anyone on that diet. I have been on weight watchers before and these recipes are mostly all high in fiber low in points.
The ONLY thing i would change about this book to make it better? I would add more pictures. But then again you can find them all online on the website.. and for the price you cant beat it.

(Hide Review...)  Fun, common-sense way to reduce calories
Reviewer Permalink
Hungry Girl, based on the website of the same name, compiles common-sense approaches to cutting fat and calories through smart substitutions. Useful sidebars offer comparisons of similar commercial fast-food versions showing fat and calories.

In the beginning, Hungry Girl (Lisa Lillien) offers up a useful list of recommended products designed to save fat/calories, including light soymilks, numerous fat-free products, and light bread products. She also includes Top ATE kitchen essentials (measuring cups, blender, etc.). Beginning with breakfast, HG offers up low-fat versions of Egg McMuffins (184 cal, 2g fat), burritos (239 cal, 3g fat), French toast (195 cal, 1g fat), smoothies and oatmeal (with pumpkin and cinnamon...yum!).

Other chapters embrace salads, soups, pastas, Guy Foods, desserts, and holiday dishes. Normally gut-busting items like chili dogs (109 cal, 1g fat), onion rings (153 cal, 1g fat), spicy crispy chicken sandwich (313 cal, 4.5 g fat), eggnog (98 cal, 2g fat), mint mocha freeze (55 cal, 0.5 g fat), and more are given low-fat makeovers courtesy of secret ingredients such as Eggbeaters, Fiber One bran cereal, and fat-free swaps like fat-free cheese, fat-free sour cream, etc. Cute drawings spice up the chapters.

Generally, the recipes are nutritionally sound and easy to prepare, but a word of warning: low-fat and fat-free products are plumped up with sodium, so the sodium counts are *insanely* high for many items (upwards of a day's worth of sodium in a single recipe), and excess sodium consumption can result in water retention, bloating, and high blood pressure. Also, the numerous sugar-free products such as sweeteners and sugar-free mixes can cause a laxative effect in sensitive people.

Also, the chapter on low-cal alcoholic beverages is suspect, since a recent study showed that mixing alcohol with diet sodas actually resulted in becoming intoxicated more quickly (21 minutes for absorption of diet soda mix versus 36 minutes for regular soda and alcohol). Of course, if you do choose to drink (these recipes can be made virgin), it's always a good idea to eat something first, which slows absorption into the bloodstream.

But for stressed-out working moms (and dads), Hungry Girl offers many palatable swaps of popular food from major chains that are markedly lower in calories, fat, and sugar, including kid-friendly recipes, that may be a good way for families to eat more healthfully.
