Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)

Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling's spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart--such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review--to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling's fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry--bring plenty of tissues.

The heart of Book 7 is a hero's mission--not just in Harry's quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man--and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you-know-who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore's warning about making the choice between "what is right and what is easy," and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you-know-who, it is a testament to Rowling's skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix's flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur?s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling?s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley?s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

Another outstanding book in the Harry Potter series. Amazing writing and creating...a book you can't put down and only disappoints because the experience is over. How about one more?? You rock JK!

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is the seventh and last book in the Harry Potter series. J. K. Rowling successfully brings all the threads together for a satisfying resolution. I enjoyed this book tremendously.

Please do not get side-tracked by the critics who seem to get a kick out of pretending that it should have been extremely simple to write a better series of stories. J. K. Rowling did a magnificent job. The last writer to achieve a similar level of ability did so over 50 years ago. In fact, the excitement surrounding the Harry Potter phenomenon resurected many other works in the fantasy gendre. The reader should focus is the question: Does this book, in front of me, catch my interest and entertain my imagination? For each book in the Harry Potter series, my own answer has been, "Yes!"

Is there anything else I should say about this book? Well, there is an area where the book seems to drag a bit. But, after a few re-readings of the book, I have no idea how the problem can be cured or if there is a real need to cure it. Also, there are two or three places where something good happens, apparently, without a decent explanation. My view is that many things happen in real life that stretch the bounds of the possible. So, why is that not possible in this story? I will, simply, remind you that, before Dumbledore's death, a great number of things and forces were set in motion. Also, in Harry's magical world, magical things are not exactly nor completely inanimate. I suggest that some of the fortunate happenings in this book are a result of magical things and forces focusing on a resolution of this battle between good and evil.

Finally, victory comes with a steep price tag. Friends lose their lives. Much ruin and harm occurs. But, the future no longer has a dark cloud hanging over it.

Personally, I would rather sit back and enjoy this superb book than to get side-tracked with small quibbles.

I recommend this book.

The final book in the Harry Potter series yet the most important of all. This book brings closure to fans' questions:

What happens to Harry relationship with Ron, Hermoine, and Ginny?
Who dies?
Does Percy Weasley make peace with his entire family?
Did Harry defeat Voldemort once and for all?

For every hard core Harry Potter fan, this book is a must-have in their collection.

In truth, while I waited for Deathly Hallows to be released, I kept thinking to myself that there was no possible way Rowling could tie up all the loose ends from the first six books in the series. Of course, she proved me wrong. The book was amazing, and I'm glad that I couldn't guess where everything was going all the time. I might have gone through every emotion possible while reading in this book: Happy, sad, angry, weary (because of reading for several hours) and so on.
She kept consistent with the messages she's been applying since the beginning. People will die when it's a time of war, there will most definitely be tragedies, but in the end you couldn't help but feel happy for the survivors.
This woman is a genius, and I hope to read several more books from her in the future.

Definitely a not to be missed book - perhaps the best story of our time!

Howev, my review is about something else.

The last 20 pages or so are so mundane, forgetful, so frustrating - that I am compelled to say, FORGET IT!

This is from a dear fan who is on the same page with you - you will be happier if you never read the conclusion - seems forced, contrived, wooden, and not at all what I would expect these characters to do. Strange.

I think you will have a much happier time if you just closed the book before the epilogue - If you check it out, you won't like it and it will trouble you.

I really, really mean it !!!!! It seems dashed off - like they were in a hurry! Too Hollywood for HP!!!!!!!! Avoid that last bit with determination - just a few pages!!!! You'll prefer it -

With love and respect -

Scott

After the final book in the series came out, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I started from the beginning and read all of the Harry Potter books. I figured that now that the entire story was told, I would see what all the fuss was about - from beginning to end. I have to admit that I also love the Potter movies and when I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I was a little confused by the storyline. I determined to read all the books to understand what was going on!! (Years ago, I had started reading the first book, got half way through and put the book down. I lost interest, silly me.) Little did I know that the little tale of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling would grow through six more books to become an epic story of good and evil, love, loyalty, bravery, wisdom, truth, and ... magic!!!. As I read through the series, each new book became my new favorite (although I still have a special fondness for both the book and the movie version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). When I finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, I believed that Rowling couldn't possibly top that story, but she did - in the grand finale that left me an emotional wreck at the end of the journey. I look forward to the rest of the movies - so that I can once again enjoy Harry's world. J.K. Rowling's series is a monumental treasure of storytelling that will be enjoyed for many generations to come.

What a read. I was all prepared for a Harry Shaped Hole after reading this book, the sense of loss/utter despair I would feel upon finishing the last Harry Potter. But the thing is....it was so much better than I thought it would be. That makes it sound like I didn't trust J.K. Rowling to get the job done, and that simply isn't true. I trusted her implicitly. I gave her ten years of my life. I'll give her next series ten more. But to end it all to my satisfaction? Knowing how many deaths were imminent? Knowing how it was becoming harder and harder to see a way for Harry to defeat Voldemort without dying himself? I couldn't see how she'd do it. But she did. And it was unbelievable how much fun it was.

I'll never forget sitting in the line at my local Barnes & Noble at a quarter to midnight as a strange green firework shoots across the sky above us and worms its way into the shape of the dark mark. The hushed, startled silence of the crowd and then the wild, exultant cheers we erupt into at the sheer magic of it all. I'll never forget turning to the dedication page to find out she'd dedicated the last one to us. "And to You, if you have stuck with Harry until the very end." To me, it was a profoundly touching moment between an author and her readers. It was the most amazingly satisfying reading experience I can imagine. More than I'd hoped for. And in the end, after seven years, just exactly what our boy deserved.

Order of the Phoenix was the best, and Deathly Hallows is the 2nd best. There's fear but not the same fear experienced when reading Order. Also Voldemort's really only a threat to Europe, but not to any other continent which is kind of annoying.

I started backward. I watched all the Harry Potter movies--and got lost. I really didn't see what all the hype was about. Somebody told me it was "simple": wave wand about, have unicorns and giants...the usual fantasy. I had no desire to "find out what happens". Yeah, I'd probably go watch the remaining movies, only because I like magic and wizards and special effects but go out and buy the last two books? Nah.

Then one day I picked up a used Harry Potter book at a garage sale and thought I'd find out what all the fuss was about; after all, books are supposed to be better than the movie.

It was cool enough to buy the last two books, but honestly, the plot of the Deathly Hallows was confusing and I really didn't want to put in that much effort into a book.

Someone recommended that I start at the very beginning with the Sorcerer's Stone...

The entire collection (books, audio cd, and dvd) later, Harry Potter got me angry, frustrated...I wanted Hermione to "give it a rest, already!"...and Ron! Don't even get me started on him!

In a way I am glad that I didn't have to wait for each book to be written, because there were times I truly disliked almost everyone of the characters. But by the end, (as I re-read)by the last chapter of THIS book, I had thoroughly loved the three friends as I would my own kids of impossible teenagers.

The Deadly Hallows has a complicated plot that readers that has not read the previous books (and I mean "read", the movie doesn't explain enough)will find difficult to follow. But it is a book that feeds the hunger the characters of Harry Potter has managed to create. Anything less would have been a let down.

Two parts were especially wonderful...the entire house elf saga with Dobby and Kreacher was priceless. Their drama queen manner was funny but touching. I laughed, smiled, and cried.

The other was the incredible, enduring love between Harry's arch enemy teacher and Harry's beloved mother. For 6 books, we were led to believe in the greatness of Dumbledore, only to learn that he was quite human with all it's failings. We also believed in the nastiness of Snape. To find out that he was really noble...and that as a boy he had been hurt and yet managed to love as none of the others, the so called good guys, had love was emotionally amazing.

I wanted to give this book 4 stars for all the grief this series had given me...then I realized that only a 5 star book can get a reader that worked up.

Yeah, I could find a dozen things wrong with this book (as other reviewers had) and those books that came before it, but in the end, if Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dobby and all the rest was real enough to make you believe for a span of time, then it has done it's job.

I loved this book. It is easily the best book in the series. I have to admire JK Rowling for her ability to kill off major characters when she has to be more attached to them than we are. The only reason it doesn't make 5 stars is because Rowling decided to tack on a horrible epilogue that doesn't answer any questions about Harry's future (plus the fact that she had to reveal things on her website that didn't factor into the books at all....)

I have to admit that I was never a Harry Potter fan,I read all of the books but I found the first four quite boring .However after the 5th book,I really got into it and began to see the appeal and understand why people loved Harry and his adventures so much!

The 6th book for me was definitely the best,I literally could NOT put it down!

And when the arrival of The Deathly Hallows came about, I was so excited to know what happened but I also dreaded the fact that it was coming to an end and that it might not live up to my expectations.

I really enjoyed most of the book,it's just the end I wasn't so sure about.

I also felt that J.K.Rowling was just trying to patch things up and in the last couple of chapters I feel in her writing a sense she just wanted to finish and tie up all the loose ends.

And I have to say,the ending was far too sweet for my liking,a bit obvious and I expected greater things from Harry and his friends.

To sum it all up...
Yes I suppose I enjoyed the book overall but at the end,I felt it was nothing more than a big mess that feels as if J.K ran out of imagination!

(Hide Review...)  The Fitting Conclusion of the Fantastic Tale of the Boy Who Lived
Reviewer Permalink
After 6 epic novels, the tale of Harry Potter finally comes to a close in The Deathly Hallows. As a fervent Potter fan, this can be nothing but bittersweet. There are few living authors that can keep you engaged in the way J.K. Rowling can. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a tremendous novel, a fitting conclusion to the end of one of the greatest stories of post-modern fiction.

J.K. Rowling is a unique author in that that, above all things, she is a storyteller. She doesn't delve into the deepest reaches of the human condition, questioning the metaphysical, or shed light on uncomfortable truths. She tells stories. Harry Potter, like the fairy tales that influenced her is a story of good and evil, the power of love and compassion persevering despite unthinkable obstacles and tragic loss. The formula has been done a million of times before, but she presents it in such a way that seems fresh and new. She goes through a conscious effort to tie emotional responses to the character's actions. There are times this comes across as overly melodramatic, but there is no denying it's effect. You care about Harry Potter and his comrades unlike few characters in post-modern fiction. The formula for a good story starts with an emotional attachment to the character's actions and reactions, and at this there is no denying her success.

The novel, like all her previous works, is written plainly. Sentences are short and succinct, dialog quick and snappy. This deliberately simplistic style causes the novel to flow effortlessly from one harrowing event to the next. The beauty is not in the language itself, but rather, in the fantastic plot it creates. There are some that credit this "simple" writing as catering to children, but this conclusion does Mrs. Rowling a grave disservice. True, this clearly isn't Joyce, but plain, simple, writing has its own charm and allure, she never lets the words get in the way of the story, and as a storyteller, this is paramount.

Compared to the previous Harry Potter novels, this is the most well-conceived since The Goblet of Fire. The action never lulls, like it does at times in The Half-Blood Prince, and throughout The Order of the Phoenix. The ending was conceived before she began book one, and this is apparent from the very beginning. Action starts from chapter one and remains consistent till the very end. The grim ending of The Half-Blood Prince is the perfect segway into The Deathly Hallows, as tragedy and struggle follow the characters every step of the way. To me, it seems that Mrs. Rowling struggled to get through books five and six because she had all of this amazing content bottled up for the epic final novel. She had to flesh out the events leading up to the end, but refrain from revealing her biggest plot twists and turns for the last full measure.

The novel does have it's faults, however. I believe she got overzealous in executing her characters. She wanted to portray that this is a war, and in war there are casualties, but she goes overboard. At times characters die for no apparent reason other than to raise the body count. She clearly does this emphisize the burden on Potter's shoulders, but she got a little carried away.

The novel, thankfully, explains all the previous mysteries that has plagued Harry for all of these years, and does so very elegantly. I hope this is the last we hear about Harry Potter and his comrades. Not because I don't want to hear about their future trials and tribulations, but like any good story, it must end. The story finally reaches its denouement, and anything else would serve to only tarnish it's greatness. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows is a testament to the power of good storytelling. While other author's try to mimic Hemingway and Faulkner, J.K. Rowling has a singular pursuit, to tell a great story, the fantastic tale of the Boy Who Lived, and at this, she has few equals.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I personally thought I could have predicted what was going to happen. J. K. Rowling completely got me on this one though. She brought up new and complex ideas and problems while still answering the old ones too. The Deathly Hallows was a wonderful addition to the book and clarified some things about some old questions I had. Some characters died and I was so shocked when I found out. Like, I almost cried for a couple of them. The final chapters of the book though are phenomenal, honestly the best chapters in the whole series. Nice job Rowling on this fantastic book, and Thank you for creating this series for all people to enjoy.

When oh when will they release the English paperback version of book 7 "Deathly Hallows" of the Harry Potter series? I still have not read it, listened to talk about it or read any reviews yet. I REALLY want to get the book but I don't buy hardcover books.

I waited until about 3 weeks ago to first pick up a Harry Potter book, first thinking they were merely children's stories when I heard of them, and still doubting them even after enjoying the movies. Thankfully, the delay in the release of the 6th movie pushed me to give reading them a try. What a wonderful and pleasant surprise, and most importantly, what a satisfying conclusion.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)
Like children, parents and grandparents, all over the world, I am a cult member. Harry Potter's final saga " Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" had been set upon the world. I dare say that no one will be disappointed. Harry's final adventure has all the earmarks of a remarkable journey into the world of fantasy. The wedding of Fleur and Bill as it ends in chaos. The escape of our trio from the death eaters and that's only in the beginning. And the many subsequent adventures. Finally - the battle at Hogwarts ending in the defeat of Voldamort by Harry. An adventure froth with danger, laughter, doubts and narrow excapes will have its readers on the edge of their seat. I was.

Harry Potter...this name has been echoed all across the globe, and J.K. Rowling's phenomenon has been wrapped up with exciting and satisfying finale. Fans hungrily awaited the highly anticipated midnight release date, eying the fresh copies with a look of pure greed in there eye. Among these people, I finally received my copy, and it was cradled warmly in my arms. Getting home in a frenzy, the novel was finished before morning, and I, and the majority of the fan community, had not been disappointed.

Prior to this exciting night, we have all wondered and fantasized; Whose side is Snape really on? Who would triumph; Voldemort or Harry? What exactly is the "Deathly Hallows"? Will Ron and Hermione finally get together? What had Dumbledore seen in the Mirror of Erised? Who would die? Who could be trusted? The suspense cackled to the awaiting community, till I thought I was going mad with anticipation.

The novel begins a little slowly yet satisfyingly, but soon morphs into a thrilling broomstick chase. It pleases me that action happens early in this book, making me urgent to read on. Things seem peaceful in the burrow, and the wedding was going smoothly when it's interrupted by the vicious Death Eaters, and things suddenly transform from a light, carefree occasion to the suspenseful aura of life and death. From there, this volume progresses, tension rising till it tilts at a breath-taking climax. However, the final outcome was slightly predictable with the death of Lord Voldemort.

The intricate plot goes all the way back to book one, weaving the sentences and storylines to form a complex rug of color. The twists and turns made this a page-turner, and my eyes were glued to the paper, even long after it was finished; I'd started to read it again. And again. And not so long after that, again. So far, I've read it a total of fifteen times.

I missed Hogwarts. This is not a negative thing, just something that I wished didn't happened, though I knew it was crucial to be so. I missed the Quidditch, interesting classes, and loads of homework assignments, dangerous spells, N.E.W.T. exams, and school secrets. It felt like I myself had missed my final year of Hogwarts along with Harry, and that was a year I had been looking forward to the most. Instead, he's out in a dark and dangerous world. This is not a bad plotline, just...a different one.

The characters mature and develop in amazing ways, and they're flawed to a lovable perfection that almost everybody can relate to. The dialogue is one of her greatest talents, I can easily imagine these characters speaking to each other in my head. I imagine them too often in fact, sometimes, they won't shut up. However, at the end, I felt like asking some characters... were have they been? What happened to Luna's parent's? Neville's grandmother? The remaining Death Eaters? Important information has been left out.

This book wasn't perfect, no, not at all. The death and loss in this book are shallow, and no real emotion was experienced when the characters died, especially Lupin, Tonks, and Fred near the book's end. The value of the loss isn't explored, making the reader forget more about what is missing, and making the whole tragedy almost cheesy. This is not realistic, and unless Harry is insensitive, then we're really missing something here.

Also, the epilogue was amateurish and thoroughly unsatisfying, and again, didn't include a ton of crucial information that J.K. Rowling only discussed in chat transcripts. The book would have been a lot better without it, and I felt like skipping over the almost insulting sentences and winced when I'd done that section.

Even though this book has it's flaws, nothing is perfect. In a way, I'm glad it has it's imperfections; I learn to be a better writer when reading them. If it was a beautifully written, flawless novel, I may have been too intimidated to write on my own. I just look past this book's bad parts, and focus on the good sections. When I read this book over, and over, and over, and over, the structure of the sentences jump out at me, and each time I read it, I look at this book in a different way every time. It's a highly entertaining adventure, and I look forward to reading it - again, in the future.

No matter how good this book was, nobody can deny what J.K. Rowling has created - an incredible, complex world of wizards and witches, one that seems too real to not be true. She inspired thousands - if not millions - of people, and encouraged a lot of young readers to learn, write, read, and think for themselves.

As I turned the final page of Harry Potter, sadness wells in my heart that there shall be no more, yet I'm deeply grateful to Ms. Rowling for the gift she has given us. The fascinating realm she created. The gift of real magic.

I loved the book. If you liked the others, this one will continue to delight. My only criticism is her portrayal of Dumbledore. I know she was hoping to create a depth to him, but I preferred the Dumbledore who truly was good without the hint of weakness that she revealed in this book. We know Dumbledore has faults from previous books, but I felt that the extra faults were unnecessary. I was also saddened by the deaths of many of the characters, but perhaps they were necessary.

I have loved each page of every book of the Potter saga since I was first introduced to that very special first book some ten years ago. what a remarkable journey it has all been. True, this finale is a bit off the path of the previous books, but just as enjoyable and a very logical conclusion to Harry's path to the gates of adulthod.

So thoroughly enjoyed, along with the remarkable and highly engaging,SIM0N LAZARUS-a vastly entertaining story for the older adolescent and beyond--and clearly, a read more should know about! (the Eckhart Tolle blurb on the cover says it all.)

The seventh installment of the Harry Potter series left me feeling high and dry at a time I felt I should have been celebrating. It was the end of an era! My defining childhood literature! And yet Rowling's attempt to bundle her created world into one neat little parcel failed miserably.

Without giving any specifics, I felt that the deviation from Hogwarts did not suit the characters at all. Their 'journey' fell flat in my eyes - a cowardly tactic despite the devastation in the world surrounding. The unbridled skewering of characters left and right seemed reminiscent of a B-grade horror film. A hundred pages in I was afraid Voldemort would be left by the sidelines in favor of much more controllable zombie armies to finish off all of the light side.

Any romance attempting to develop during the story line is utterly lost in the constant movement and action, which turned more boring then battle intense by the end of the novel. The final battle is overly dramatic and missing some vital characteristic that I am still unaware of. And can anyone say hero complex?

But beside all that, I believe the most horrible part of the ending to this generations defining series is the Epilogue. Not only does it attempt to give the next twenty years' worth of history in less than twenty pages, but it was uncalled for. What happened to letting the reader decide what happens? Who needs a pretty bow telling you that so-and-so lived happily ever after with fifteen kids, the end? J.K. Rowling, borrowing one of her favorite lines, completely bulloxed the ending with a few words too many.

In conclusion, steer clear of this book. The only thing that lies here is eight hours of pure disappointment.

I've read all of the Harry Potter books aloud to my son (who is now 10), and, while we're not yet far into Deathly Hallows, we can see that it will be as fun as all the others. We became engrossed in it from Page One. We're excited to see how the series ends, but we'll miss reading it. It's not only been a good read, but a great experience for us to have together. He could certainly be reading it alone at this point, but we wouldn't miss the shared enjoyment.
