Oracle E-Business Suite Financials Handbook (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)

Officially endorsed by Oracle Corporation, this detailed resource from Oracle Press explains how to maximize the centralized planning, accounting, treasury, purchasing, and management features of Oracle Financials--and revolutionize your company's finance infrastructure.
Deploying Oracle applications in any organization is an enormous task, and Oracle Financials Handbook should be considered prerequisite reading for any technical or business process specialist involved in such a project. The applications provide core business processes based on Oracle Corporation's database architecture, and the book discusses some of the most popular applications in the suite.

The book opens with a brief executive summary of Oracle Financials. The authors place financial applications in perspective, explaining where they fit into the overall Oracle Applications strategy and what the benefits are of choosing them for core business processes. This section also presents some of the important organizational choices you must make at the outset of deployment.

In the middle section of the book, the authors discuss the modules: general ledger, receivables, payables, asset management, purchasing, inventory, order entry, and others. The General Ledger module forms the core of the strategy and is discussed in great detail. The book provides plenty of flow diagrams to explain each module. The authors devote an additional chapter to budgeting and allocations, and address different accounting models.

Oracle Financials Handbook closes with technical details on deploying Oracle Financials in an enterprise. The entire computing environment is considered in this discussion, which includes information on customizing and modifying the modules to meet your needs. The final chapters cover project management and training issues that you need to work through. --Stephen Plain

If you're getting ready to implement E-Business Financials, this is a "one size fits all" book. It reviews pre-implementation guidelines, helpful hints, general accounting refreshers, and basically walks you through what it takes to implement this Oracle product successfully. I return to this book several times a day as we are planning the implementations.

OCP Advisor advises his blog readers at ebizocp dot blogspot dot com on study materials, preparation tips and exam experiences for 11i OCP exams.
OCP Advisor recommends the Oracle Financials Handbook as a must read to review your concepts and use the book to prepare flash cards and exam cram checklist. While a handbook cannot replace user guides and other documentations, it serves as an excellent tool to revise the fundamentals tested in the certification exams. The book should be undergoing a makeover pretty soon as Release 12 introduces radically new features for the Oracle Financials foundation. Read more about R12 at oracler12 dot blogpsot dot com. Happy Reading!

I have tried to buy this book from Amazon. When buying it says it will ship in 2-3 weeks, but even after two months Amazon keeps mailing that it would still be delayed by a month. Be careful while buying this book from amazon, as in my case the purpose is finshed before i even got the book.

I bought this book because I was trying to teach myself enough to become a Financials Developer. This still MIGHT be the right book for me. However, this is not a step by step guide to the installation. In addition, the book assumes some familiarity with accounting systems.

We should appreciate that this is the first book published on market talking about Oracle Financials. However, this is the book that contains only general introduction. It doesn't have any detail information either for functional users or technical persons. As an Oracle Financial developer with many years of experience, I don't get any useful information out of it. May be it's good for somebody who don't know Oracle Financials at all.

I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !

(Hide Review...)  Needed a case study approach for Ora Fin. A long way to go.
Reviewer Permalink
Oracle Financials implementation is not a trivial task. It is a major cost for any organizations' IT department. This books tries to break the ice on Oracle Finacials compiled information. It is the only book that exists in the field of Oracle Financials. The enormity of this tasks makes it impossible to club all the knowledge one would expect from a handbook. However, it does try to be insightful for ar modules as opposed to explanation of other modules. It is the courage of the authors to delve on such an elusive topic that deserves a special mention. What we need for an implementation is case studies with very particular code specific to that situation. I guess for each module in Oracle finacials one could write a book and that is what is required. Or if we try to slice and dice it from different perspective. Let us assume we try to categorize it from Industry line perspective. One for Energy kind of industry, one for production kind of industry, and so on the classification will become endless what is required is the process identification in a business ( for instance invoicing, billing) and then trying to explain the best practices and implementation for that process. The purpose of this book is introduction to Financials and a brief outlook at each module and project management. I think we need a module-detailed book with processes implementation.

(Hide Review...)  An Outline, not a Handbook, of Oracle Finanicials !

Did someone call it a Handbook? What the book offers is less than a bird's eye-view of Oracle Financials. To be fair to the authors, it is unfair to expect much in a single book on such a complex package like Oracle Financials. However, many important features of Oracle Financials are omitted and at the same time, repeated presentation of the same information, possibly on the same page, irritates you several times. Many graphics are confusing, even to a reader familiar with the topic.

Despite being the only source of published information about the subject, the book disappoints you irrespective of your knowledge level of Oracle Financials.

I was extremely disappointed with the book. It gave an overview of some of the modules, but there is no depth. Also, some of what it does contain is not accurate. I've told others that if they know nothing of Oracle Applications, the book may be worth reading. Otherwise, forget it.

As a functional business analyst, this book offers little about topics an experienced IT professional already knows. The discriptions are brief and of little use. The book is really a high level discussion that exists in Oracle documentation. If I could I would return the book. With a title of 'handbook', one would expect good insight on how-to's. Don't bother, it's not in here.

Reviewer Permalink
This book is has just the right mix of Application, Accounting , Business, Organizational and Technical information to make it extremely useful. For new and existing Oracle clients who have been on the training course and are wondering what next, this book and it's great contents definitely point the way to how everything fits together. There are important practical pointers as to what NOT to do and how your data flows will be. Anyone who has worked with the Apps product knows that getting to grips with all the parameters, specific Oracle Terminology and setup issues is half the battle. I have been in several countries across the globe and spoken to numerous users who have read this book who all find it has made the Oracle Fins picture a much more complete one for them. One user commented that this book would be excellent as a university course text book to explain how Accounting Systems work. A job well done by the authors to make the large and complex world of Oracle Fins look so simple in an easy to read and comprehensive book.

I think that it is great that books on Oracle Applications are being published as there are not many out there.

I bought this one and have passed it onto colleagues who are new to Applications. Looking forward to reading and using the one from Que in Sept/Oct.

Books such as this compliment the Oracle manuals, user groups and various web sites/ newsgroups that are out there focusing on Oracle Applications.

As support would tell you "your issue is not a bug but a consultancy/ implmentation issue". The more information available from consultants who have or do work with Apps the wealthier the Apps community.

I applaud the authors on their efforts, however I am disappointed in the finished product. The outdated screen shots (R10SC vs R11), incorrect integration (there is no interface between OE and GL) and misleading information (i.e. AutoAccounting functionality varies between Projects and Receivables) concerns me greatly. If someone is looking for an overview of how Oracle Applications function in general, this book will be a help. If they are going to be working on an implementation, they definately need more research than this book will offer.

To the reader who wondered why Order Entry and Inventory should be included...despite how Oracle chooses to bundle the products - these two applications have definite financial implications -- please don't remove them from future editions.

If this book is called "Oracle Financials Overview" it would be an excelent one. But there is no way in hell this is a "handbook" because there is nothing inside to make you use this book more than once. It is good just to give you an overview (but good one indeed). And what "planning and implementation" (from the book title) are you talking about? Again, this is an Overview and nothing else!

The book covered just the right amount of functional and technical information. I am thrilled that someone thought about writing a book with a focus on applications since all the other books were primarily technical. Its about time a book like this came along for those of us who may not be as technically sound but definitely want to learn about it as well as how it incorporates into the applications side. I hope this isn't the end and would like to see more books come out that would start focusing into more specific areas. Good job!

Reviewer Permalink
Firstly, I have to admit I'm a friend of the primary author David James, but I think they did a great job. Some of the negative reviews have been unfair. A book like this can't possibly be all things to all people. It doesn't cover HR, Payroll, or the core Manufacturing modules - that's why it's the "Oracle Financials Handbook", not the "Oracle Applications Handbook". It's definitely not a reference book or technical manual - you get those from Oracle Corporation anyway. What this book does do, is give an excellent background to real-world implementation of the Financials modules at a functional level. It's great for beginners and the more advanced, but I would defy even the gurus to read it and say they haven't learned from it.

I actually tried to talk David out of the whole endeavour almost three years ago, not because I didn't think he was qualified, but because I didn't think it was possible to write such a book covering all the Financials modules. I think he'd admit he underestimated just how much work it would be. That's one reason why a book like this hasn't been written before - there is just so much information to cover, unless you resort to wholesale cutting and pasting from the manuals and other people's papers.

I think the book is very impressive. I know David's skills, and I know how hard he worked to put everything together, and update it as the product evolved. I would recommend it to anyone working on a Financials implementation.

For those critics of you out there who think that this book was not this or not that, especially the reader from Port Arthur in Tasmania, I suggest you buy an Oracle Reference Manual or Users guide. Get real! This book gives a great introduction to the core Oracle Applications and I believe it was well done. It introduces the business and Functional side to Oracle Financials. For those pretentious readers who can't spell Oracle read the cover "Oracle Financials Handbook" - "Planning and Implementing the Oracle Financial Applications Suite" No where does it say Technical Reference Manual. I'd like to see these half baked consultants write ANYTHING half as good. Well done David and Graham. If anyone cares to discuss this work email me and we'll "CHAT"

This book does give quite a good overview of the applications. However, it tries to be all things to all people, and does not really succeed. The chapters on the core Financials modules are not too bad. The title of the book is a bit confusing, because Oracle renamed its suite 'Oracle Applications' some time ago; ie why would you see Inventory and Order Entry discussed in a 'Financials' Handbook? There are also quite a few inaccuracies in the book, some of which may mislead implementers.

I was surprised, if not shocked by the number of errors I found in the book. Some of them seemed like poor editing -- for instance the mention of three authors when we know of only two. Some errors, however, were very serious since they inaccurately described the way Oracle Financials modules work.

I am not certain who did the technical editing of the book but they obviously knew nothing about Oracle Applications. There were too many fundamental mistakes to blame the problem on an oversight.

I would recommend the book to anyone who is trying to get an overview of Oracle Financials but would not rely on any information contained in the book in a real implementation.

Oracle Press has tried to put all Oracle Financial modules in single book, so it is more of "Introduction to Oracle Financial" rather than a Guideline for Implementer. If someone for resources for implementation, he should either go to Oracle Training or hire a consultant.
