(Hide Review...)  Worthless-The oracle documents are as good

I thought that this book would be better than the online oracle documentation. It isn't. In fact it is pretty much a regurgitation of the stuff in the mostly worthless Oracle Dataguard Concepts and Administration document. I needed much more info regarding how to set up the standby host including how to initially configure oracle (ie. should you create a DB when you install or not?) Even after buying this book I found myself Googling to get the info I needed.

This book provides detailed description of the ORACLE Dataguard's architecture, setup, troubleshooting, maintenance, failover, and performance tuning. Including:

1)Physical and Logical Standby architecture and setup.
2)Synchronous and Asynchronous transfers of Redo log information.
3)Different Protection modes.
4)Switchover and Failover
5)Monitoring and checking the health and performance of Dataguard.

I would certainly recommend this book for those who must manage Oracle Dataguard environment for disaster recovery and read only databases.

(Hide Review...)  Only book that covers Data Guard well on market

I read this book and its good coverage for command line with Data Guard and concepts. Very useful and have used it on several projects to implement standby databases. Now would be great to see one that covers new features for 10gR2 and 11g.

(Hide Review...)  Good coverage still overall best Data Guard book on market
Reviewer Permalink
I agree with other reviewers in that this book lacks coverage on how to setup and manage Data Guard with Oracle 10g Grid Control and OEM. However no other book really covers much on OEM and Oracle 10g Grid Control either. The coverage on Data Broker is ok but lacks depth. Overall a decent text on the basics for setup and management of Data Guard but the same information can be found online from Metalink and Oracle tech net for free. Hence only 3 stars because it lacks OEM 10g coverage and redundant.

I had high hopes when I purchased the book. After reading it over, I found it poorly organized, written and edited. The information was little more than what's available in the Oracle documents and in metalink, as has been pointed out. The cartoons sprinkled throughout were distracting, amateurish, unfunny, and, in the case of the one on page 210, offensive.
I have several books in this series and really like a few of them. Oracle Privacy Security Auditing is especially good. I wish the same were true of this waste of good paper.

Another reviewer has already said it, but it's worth repeating: the book's big failing is that it doesn't cover Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) management of Data Guard. Maybe, though, that makes sense - because if one does use OEM, then Data Guard setup & management is an absolute doddle, and renders this book worthless. If you want to know the technology behind Data Guard, then go direct i.e. read the Oracle documentation.

My advice to anyone wishing to evaluate Data Guard is to use OEM; you'll be up and running in no time. In fact, my advice is to ALWAYS use OEM whenever possible for ANY aspect of Oracle. The OEM is now extremely good and, should anything horrible ever happen, then any involvement of Oracle Support would be far less bothersome & time-consuming than when having used *home-grown* scripts, etc.

Another gripe with this book is that, ultimately, it makes a 5-course meal of an easy-to-setup-and-use technology.

As the series editor for this book I was able to get an in-depth understanding of Data Guard while working with Mr.Kumar.

This book turned-out excellent, and Kumar has covered all of the relevant tips and techniques, going far beyond the Oracle documentation and manuals for Data Guard technology.

This book is especially important because the author is a real-world Oracle Dataguard user and he shares the unvarnished truth about using standby databases in a mission-critical production environment.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to explore the latest in Oracle data guard replication, failover and disaster recovery technology.

Few months ago we decided to implement Data Guard for three of our databases and the only help available at that time was 1000+ pages of Oracle Manual. Book by Mathew Hart doesn't go beneath the skin of this important topic. Later last month, this book on data guard was bought for our department and initially I was hesitant to spend time reading it (usually I read only O'REILLY books). But low and behold, final verdict is : its a good informative book.

1. Covers all areas of Oracle Data Gurad.
2. Written simply - No imaginative stories.
3. Best suitable for usual data guard jobs -- setting up, managing , switchover etc.

However, it could have been better. In my opinion it lacks

1. Coverage of Data Guard interaction with OEM.
2. Running data guard in RAC (though its not much different than single instance).

Worth the money (even though it wasn't mine ! ).

It helps in setting up and managing standby databases. Author is biased towards physical standby database more than logical standby. Overall a good book. Chapter on performance tuning of data guard is useful.

(Hide Review...)  Technical enough for CLI only.
Reviewer Permalink
Not cover 10g too much. Majority of the contents were duplicated from 9iR2 oracle metalink notes . Authors only cover Dataguard broker (CLI) by few topics . As matter of fact, this make me disappointed.

The writers like to subsitute the Oracle manual in OTN but make no difference . eg, I wanted to setup the Dataguard through EM10g Grid Control. In fact , the creation standby database wizard was filled of bugs and user can't make use of it till patching and huge manual works. It's no doubt that writers never tried on this features. The book is rather splotchy and winding.
