In a remarkable debut novel that sizzles with sensuality, crackles with life-affirming energy and moves the reader to laughter and tears, author Pearl Cleage creates a world rich in character, human drama, and deep, compassionate understanding. After a decade of luxe living in Atlanta, Ava Johnson has returned to tiny Idlewild, Michigan -- her fabulous career and power plans smashed to bits on one dark truth: Ava has tested positive for HIV. Bur rather than a sorrowful end, her homecoming is a new beginning. Because, in the ten-plus years since she left, all the problems of the big city have invaded the sleepy community of her childhood. Because dear friends and family sorely need her help in the face of impending trouble and tragedy, and Ava cannot turn her back on them. And because, most importantly, Ava Johnson is inexplicabley and undeniably falling in love.

Oprah Book ClubŪ Selection, September 1998: What makes Pearl Cleage's novel so damned enjoyable? At first glance, after all, What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day seems pretty heavy going: HIV, suicide, sudden infant death syndrome, and drunk driving all figure prominently in the lives of narrator Ava Johnson and her older sister Joyce. It isn't long before crack addiction, domestic violence, and unwed motherhood have joined the list--so, where's the pleasure? The answer lies in the sharp and funny attitude Cleage brings to her depiction of one African American community in the troubled '90s. Ava Johnson, for example, might be HIV-positive, but she's refreshingly forthright about it: "Most of us got it from the boys. Which is, when you think about it, a pretty good argument for cutting men loose, but if I could work up a strong physical reaction to women, I would already be having sex with them. I'm not knocking it. I'm just saying I can't be a witness. Too many titties in one place to suit me."
Ada has spent the last 10 years living in Atlanta. When she discovers she's infected, she sells her hairdressing business and heads back to her childhood home of Idlewild, Michigan, to spend the summer with her recently widowed sister before moving on to San Francisco. Once there, however, she finds herself embroiled in big-city problems--drugs, violence, teen pregnancy, and an abandoned crack-addicted baby, to name just a few--in a small-town setting. Ava also meets Eddie Jefferson, a man with a past who just might change her mind about the imprudence of falling in love. In less assured hands, such a catalog of disasters would make for maudlin, melodramatic reading indeed. But Cleage, an accomplished playwright, has a way both with characters and with language that lifts this tale above its movie-of-the-week tendencies. In Ava she has created a character who not only effortlessly carries the weight of the story but also provides entertaining commentary on African American life as she goes. Discussing the insular nature of the black community in Atlanta, she recalls, "I'd walk into a reception room and there'd be a room full of brothers, power-brokering their asses off, and I'd realize I'd seen them all naked. I'd watch them striding around, talking to each other in those phony-ass voices men use when they want to make it clear they got juice, and it was so depressing, all I'd want to do was go home and get drunk." Later, she describes the preacher's wife's hair as "pressed and hot-curled within an inch of its life.... Hardly anybody asks for that kind of hard press anymore. Sister seems to have missed the moment when we decided it was okay for the hair to move." As the trials and tribulations pile on, the experiences of Cleage's characters prove to be universal: death, love, second chances. Ava's acerbic, smart-mouthed narrative keeps the story buoyant; by the time this endearingly imperfect heroine and her cohorts have negotiated the rocky road to a happy ending, readers will be sorry to see her go, even as they wish her well. --Alix Wilber |

"PerfectBound e-book extra: A Reading Group Guide to What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day. The classic smash bestseller and Oprah fave is now an e-book. After a decade of elegant pleasures and luxe living among the Atlanta brothers and sisters with the best clothes and the biggest dreams, Ava Johnson has temporarily returned home to Idlewild -- her fabulous career and power plans smashed to bits by cold reality. But what she imagines is the end is, instead, a beginning. Because, in the ten-plus years since Ava left, all the problems of the big city have come to roost in the sleepy North Michigan community whose ordinariness once drove her away; and she cannot turn her back on friends and family who sorely need her in the face of impending trouble and tragedy. Besides which, that one unthinkable, unmistakable thing is now happening to her: Ava Johnson is falling in love."

I didn't have a problem reading the book from beginning to end, however the storyline was a bit predictable. Everything just came together so perfect and in such a cutesy romantic fashion, that it made the book less enjoyable. The character development could have been better. Its always good to read a happy ending, but the book was too happy and a bit unrealistic, even the terminal illness thrown in didn't seem to shake the characters up.

This book was basically a filler for me. I was waiting for another book to come in the mail and this one came first. I was impressed. I have never really touched on the topic of HIV and i think this opened my eyes and created a real person in my mind and their feelings. Ending is predictable but i felt good about it. Days after finishing I kept thinking about the book.

This story started out strong but was incredibly predictable. I kept reading because I thought it would get better. It didn't. What bugged me the most was that Eddie was ready to kill the teenage hoodlum for throwing a bottle thru the window - yikes!!! The teenager was completely unredeemable to him, which was totally weird since Eddie did much worse in his lifetime (that's putting it mildly), and he seemed redeemed. In fact, he had become a saint of sorts. And what about crazy church lady's motives? That part of the story was weak and just did not make much sense.
I wanted Ava to continue doing hair - that was much more interesting than her ridiculously perfect romance. I gave it two stars because I did chuckle a few times, and some of the story was original and interesting. Sorry, Oprah, this was a dud. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-08 08:03:37 EST)

I didnt pick this book up because it was on Oprah's Book Club, I picked it up while browsing Costco for a new fiction book, YEARS ago when it first came out. I absolutely LOVED this book! Made me want to move to the south and get back to whats real. It has a genuine down-home charm and who would imagine she falls in love? Its an AMAZING BOOK! You wont be disappointed!

My cousin suggested that I read this novel a long time ago. When she told me what the title of the book was, I was immediately interested. First of all, it's a lengthy title. Secondly, I was internally wondering, what does look like crazy on an ordinary day? I asked my cousin to give me a brief synopsis on the book, and she did, and I was even more interested after listening to the synopsis. After reading "What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day", I was intrigued more so than anything. One critic said Pearl Cleage tells a story better than Terry McMillan. Terry McMillan? Really? I have read a plethora of books and not many authors can tell a story better than Terry McMillan, and honestly, Cleage didn't even come close. However, the plot was brilliant. The story could have been executed better, though.
"What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day" is the story of Ava, a hairdresser living with AIDS who resides in Atlanta. She used to be a very promiscuous woman and decides that she wants to inform all of her sex partners of her diagnosis so they can get tested, too. The wife of one of her old sex partners reads the letter and comes to her salon and tells everyone that she has AIDS. Embarrassed, Ava decides to visit her sister, Joyce, in Idlewild, Michigan. While she is there, she meets Eddie, a Vietnam veteran and former murderer. Eddie is attracted to Ava, but shows her only subtly. Their relationship begins by the middle of the book. Pearl Cleage created one of the most beautiful literary love scenes I have ever read with these two people (when they have their first sexual encounter.) There are many subplots in this story. Joyce is the foster mother of a crack baby, Imani, and she does any and everything to keep her safe. Collectively, this is a beautiful story and I highly recommend it. Cleage did a very nice job. Pearl Cleage's What Looks like Crazy on an Ordinary Day is the
story of a young woman who finds out that she's HIV-positive. She leaves Atlanta and comes home to Michigan to live with her sister. The novel deals with a small-town's reaction to finding out about her illness; her sister also is a widower trying to rebuild her life. The novel has just enough Terry McMillan-type drama in it to be engaging but doesn't become too over-the-top or too preachy. Cleage's gift is in her ability to write a story with very subtle messages. A surprisingly refreshing book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-15 13:42:41 EST)

I was shocked, surprised and inspired. Just like a strong black woman to try to take care of everyone else's needs, make sure everyone is ok. This was a great book and didn't turn out at all like I expected. Oprah gets a thumbs up for this one. Usually I don't know how or why she picks a book. You wont be disappointed

I picked up this book in a used bookstore for the sole reason that it was an Oprah's Book Club Book. I already had an arm load of books and thought that if Oprah liked it - it couldn't be that bad. I chose to read it several months later when I was in need of a short book to read quickly.
And, quickly indeed I read it. I was happily surprised by how much I immediately fell in love with the characters and by how quickly I was enthralled in the story. I'd never read a book that was so honest in the ways of the African American woman and I was overjoyed by Cleage's writing style and how she really made the reader "know" the main character and her struggles. I found this book eye opening and wonderful. It is touching, funny, heart wrenching - it is simply, an increadible read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-26 01:30:24 EST)

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage was a delightful story to read. Although, the story was written in 1999, the issues of HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, teenage pregnancy, welfare, drugs, and holy and righteous know-it-all church folks are still very dominate issues in the African American community today. Ms. Cleage does an excellent job of tastefully addressing urban life in the community.
Ms. Cleage is a great storyteller and does a good job with character development. She also incorporated lessons to be learned especially for teenagers (The Sewing Circus). This book was an easy read and highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-27 21:34:30 EST)

I read this book in about 6 hours. It is an easy, if predictable, read. Doesn't delve into the whole AIDS topic too deeply, but it is always a thread throughout. Ava is a likeable character, as is her sister. The romance sub-plot is VERY predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless.
A good book to bring on vacation - happy ending and all! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-11-06 19:00:02 EST)

I stayed home from work yesterday because I wanted to read this book undisturbed and I knew that if I would have went to work, I would have done nothing but shut my door and read the book all day. So I took the day off (paid of course) to read this book and it was well worth it!! I was getting my hair done and asked her to keep me under the dryer as long as possible because I wanted to sit there and read and read...
The summary on the back of the book does not give the book justice... Please read; you will def. not regret. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-10-12 16:06:08 EST)

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day. By Pearl Cleage.
As an avid reader there are times I am desperate for a book to read and yet cannot seem to find one I have not read. It was suggested by a friend that I read this book. Having never heard of the author I hesitated for a moment and then bought it. At first realizing this was a story about a woman who had Aids I wondered if I would be able to read it. To my surprise once I opened it and read the first chapter I was unable to put this book down. This is a first novel for this writer and I must say a literary gem. From start to finish the writing is exceptional, the characters vivid and so close you can touch them. Though there is so much sadness, death, drugs, and cruelty the author never allowed you to dwell on these facts alone. She had you feel only the love, and hope, the goodness of some in spite of the meanness of others. The ending is uplifting, for you also close the book knowing that you have finished a novel well worth reading. I have bought three more of Pearl Cleage's books and cannot wait to read them. I was given this book by a friend as a going away gift. The day I decided to read it, I was ill and lay on the couch reading it in one sitting. I was a bit drowsy, but I could not but it down...It made me nervous, excited, sad, and happy...all the emotions that a good book or movie can offer. Get this if you are a serious reader looking for a fictional escape.

Ava Johnson is moving from Atlanta to San Francisco in an attempt to live the rest of her life in an environment more knowledgeable, open, and accepting- because she has been diagnosed as being HIV-positive. On her way from one to the other, Ava stops by the town she grew up in, Idlewild, to spend the summer with her older sister. However, the town she remembers as being sleepy much more active than she remembers. She ends up getting caught up in the fight to educate young women about safe sex, coming into conflict with the new minister and his wife, and the battle the keep a cocaine addicted baby from being given to her mother's drug using, abusive family. All in all, it is not the lazy, peaceful summer she imagined it would be.
Quote: "For the first time in a long time, I didn't grip and pray during takeoff. It wasn't' that I was drunk. I've been a lot drunker on a lot of other airplanes. It's just that at this point, a plane crash might be just what the doctor ordered." This is a different book from others I nave read (it is only this year that I began reading many contemporary novels). I found it to be an interesting, mostly fast moving and enjoyable book. I came to be interested in the issues the different characters had and their ways of handling the situations they found themselves confronted with. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 16:36:37 EST)

As a white man, this book offended me several times during the first five minutes of reading it. If an author wrote in the same way about black people the book would not even be published! I am tired of the double standard! Thank god I didn't pay for this book and only checked it out at the library.

This book was awful! I've not met many books that I didn't enjoy, but this book was loaded cliches. This author took deep subject matter (Having HIV) and turned it into garbage.....I got to a point in the book where the main character said something along the lines of "...and we sang the tunes we'd been practicing for a lifetime, oh yea, oh yea, oh baby yea yea yea. The saddest part of this book for me was that I paid retail. i want my money back!

Pearl Cleage gives us hope and the message that no one is beyond love though sometimes it comes when we are not looking and at the most in-opportune times. We cannot help but yearn for a love that is so admiredly pure and simple as is found in this novel. We all hope to find a companion that offers us the kind of spiritual, emotional and physical fulfillment as is nurtured here. And we cannot forget the sisterly love that is at the heart of this uplifting tale of love, hope, past mistakes and the human bond we all wish to share.

I found this book in my church library.....which if you know the language and the subject matter of the book it is an odd place to find this. I loved the aspects of the book that talked about the teenage mothers and how the main character's sister was trying to help them. However the whole romance part was very predictable and kind of got annoying. I actually would skim over those parts. I would have loved to see the book with the sister as the main character instead. Overall I would recommend this as a good summer read, but for me it was definitely a beach book.

The structure of the novel is ambitious, satisfying, and well-executed, but the way Ms. Cleage goes about writing it is so overshot it misses its own point. Everything is sappy like a TV movie, and it reminded me of a Hallmark card or one of those kids' shows where everything is just A-okay in the end. Despite the negative plotpoints (AIDS, crazy church lady, crack baby, struggling black community, teenage mothers, dead family members), Ms. Cleage skips right over them as quickly as she can to get to the nice weather, and the cute baby, and wonderful Eddie, who is so perfect I began to hate him. Lucky Ava, who was able to overcome her budding alcoholism with a few sunny walks and no struggle at all! This book would have been about ten times better if the writer had stopped to give Eddie some flaws, make Imani more like a real baby, give Ava some symptoms, and so on. The only character who seemed even remotely realistic, and therefore the only character I was able to care about, was Joyce. At about the tenth time Eddie touched Ava's cheek and gave her a solemn, peaceful look and then told her something so wise even Socrates couldn't have done a better job, I wanted to scream!

Very thought-provoking while adding a touch of emotion. I loved this book!
