Yes it is a simple book and perhaps a simple diet but it works! Isn't that the goal? No diet is easy but, this one is very effective. I have suffered form a low thyroid for years and even on medication I couldn't loose the weight I wanted until I followed this program. I not only lost weight, I also lost inches! I have been able to got back and forth with it effectively any time I need to loose a couple more pounds. Just follow the regiment. Dr. Ian's three categories really help you understand how little you have to eat and how much exercise you need to do in order to loose weight. Yes, the exercise portion is necessary.
I am thrilled with my results! This regiment is not for lazy people! I got used to the amounts of both food and exercise and now I am an avid walker. If I don't do my daily cardio, I feel sad. This book helped me get hooked on cardio. I know I sound like an infomercial but that is because I only have good things to say about the book. Thanks Dr. Smith!

Cheers,
Michael

I am proud to say that I finished the diet about 5 months ago, all the way through, cheating maybe once during the 3rd phase (which, by the way dr ian says is okay as long as you get back to where you were) and I lost 25 pounds.

Now I can eat the pizza, burgers, fries, and yes even potato chips, however I am a lot smarter in my choices. For instance I'll only eat wheat bread and pasta (occassionally going to the white but only when there's no other choice and that doesn't happen often), I substitute water for carbonated or sweetened beverages, I only eat fried food MAYBE three or four times a month, instead of chips I'll get pretzels (although when I'm truly craving doritos I'll treat myself but I've honestly only had a handful of doritos maybe twice in the last 5 months, and I have a serious sweet tooth so every once in a while I'll reward myself with a piece of cheesecake (my FAVORITE dessert EVER!!!) and it is perfectly fine to have a couple of chocolate chip cookies for dessert or as an afternoon snack. I even indulge in an alcoholic beverage on the weekends when I go out.

I still eat every 3 hours, I don't eat at least 2 hours before I go to sleep, I eat lots of fruits and vegetables for snacks, drink lots of water, and I work out only 15-20 minutes 4 days a week doing yoga or Pilates (I'll also run about 3 miles whenever the weather is good and I wake up early enough). I have successfully kept the weight off for the five months and I'm thinking about going back on the diet to lose 15 more pounds so I can hit my ultimate goal!

But I just wanted to share my story because a lot of people may feel like quitting but trust me in the end it will be all worth it. You can eat the foods you were craving the first 8 weeks (in moderation of course) and you can keep the results. I LOVE this diet. My sister and mother both started after seeing the results it gave me and my mother lost 15 pounds and sister has lost 20. It's just amazing and I thank Dr. Ian from the bottom of my heart because I've struggled with my weight ever since the 7th grade. I had always been active (3 and 4 sport athlete) but the weight never seemed to come off. My mother put me on all kinds of diets that just never worked so thanks to Dr. Ian Smith, at 23 I can FINALLY like what I see when I look in the mirror.

So for anyone who wants to lose weight with a reasonable and practical diet and lifestyle change than I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I've struggled with my weight for a long time. Right now, I'm 25 years old, about 35 pounds overweight. About a month ago I joined a gym, signed up with a personal trainer...and ate nothing but junk. Haven't lost a pound.

I started this diet 12 hours ago, and I'm so thrilled and excited for myself. I work a 12 hour day, and spend the whole time sitting, so I've eaten nothing but fast-food for years. This diet is a total overhaul for me. But after reading 50+ reviews and carefully considering what this diet consists of...I'm 100% confident I'll see some results in a couple of days.

This book is short, clear and concise. Some people have a problem with that, but I feel that the way Dr. Ian plans it out is just that simple. And for whatever else there is a message board online, or you can just use common sense.

I think the most important thing is the dreaded "Phase 1 Detox". The truth is, you can cut calories and starve yourself all you want. But if you think that having a burger without the cheese, or iced tea instead of soda will help you, you're wrong. Fat Smash is being straight-up, and telling me to cut the crap, the ONLY way to keep yourself healthy, and keep your body in shape, is to EAT HEALTHY AND WORK OUT. Use this diet to change your life, and stop going on and off tricky diet schemes.

Its so great that someone laid out a plan to train yourself to stop eating garbage. After reading this book, I can't think of a better way to do it. I'll remember to update after this... right now I'm 153. I'm hoping to get back down to 115.

Read this book from cover to cover. Found it to be an interesting, informative, helpful read. As with most diet books, this one tends to make diet suggestions that don't seem too practical. In order to achieve solid results, one must conform with the suggested dietary guidelines that oftentimes require purchasing unique items that may not be used too often once weight goals are attained. I realize a weight loss program is a lifestyle change, but to require me to initially cut out meats, starches, etc. as part of the cleansing process in the foundation stage sounds a little extreme to me. Afterall, in school we were taught the importance of proper eating by utilizing the Food Pyramid and encompassing meats, cheeses, starches, fruits, vegetables, breads in our diets on a daily basis. Diet books & programs now seem to shun utilizing some of the key components of the Food Pyramid which only adds to my confusion in my quest to address weight issues. I will utilize some aspects of the book in my weight loss program-some of the recipes sounds mouth watering & tantalizing.

I have about 10 pounds I'd like to lose. When I have time the tread mill works great. I also don't eat fast food or anything fried. So, I figured I'd see that this diet was all about. You basically send your body into shock with nothing but fruits and veggies for a week and then control your portions over a three month period. If you don't have kids then it would work. The portions don't work with a family. I suggest using common sense when eating and exercise. You also won't get hit with emails everyday about diet and exercise either!!!

I liked the plan. It's spelled out pretty basic. I think it's better to start when the weather's warm. The detox doesn't seem so bad in the summer when you usually eat light anyway. I mainly followed the "allowed lists" because it gave me structure. I noticed increased strength from the regular exercise and nutritional food, and I felt a lot better eating mostly fruits and vegetables. I almost didn't go back to meat. I am only eating meat once a day, most days. I am nearing the end of phase two (9 days for phase 1 and 3 weeks for phase 2)and I have lost 10 pounds - and I cheated a few days while on vacation. And I've noticed a big difference in my clothes. I can even wear a necklace now that I couldn't wear before. I like the way it emphasizes slowly taking off the weight and changing your eating and exersise habits. So far it's a good plan for someone who doen't want to figure out what they can eat. It's spelled out for you.

(Hide Review...)  After one year from completing phase 3...

Hello, I thought you might want to hear from someone who's not currently on the diet (as so many reviewers...trust me, I understand their enthusiasm!)

I finished all three phases 11 months ago, and I have maintained all the weight off. I lost 30 pounds, and I feel great. Throughout the diet, I never once felt hungry, or had trouble eating the foods he suggests (in fact, I found it hard to eat so MUCH food, because he recommends snacking and I was a one meal per day person before the diet...and this book taught me that eating like this slows your metabolism.

I'm 42, and I am back to what I weighed in high school.

I can't say enough about this diet, and I've turned a few people on to it, though, they came from very bad eating habits, so it's been harder for them to eat steamed veggies, and brown rice.

I have to say, I can eat what I want, when I want, and how much I want (I'm a nurse, and I eat cookies and cake all night long, pretty much) and my metabolism is still revved up.

Throughout the year, I have put on a pound or two, but I take it back off quickly as soon as I feel it by going back to phase two.

It's not hard, and it's well-worth sticking to.

While I found this book and easy read and a great diet to follow (my parents want to try it), there are only a couple concerns I have come across. Before I get to those I just want to say the diet is GREAT---I have lost 14 pounds this past month, but here are just the some things that need to be tweaked in the book (maybe in the 2nd edition). First of all---the first phase should be called the vegetarian/no-caffeine phase. I do not eat alot of veggies (hence my weight problem) and work nights, so I am used to consuming at least one can diet soda or cup of coffee a day. BUT, I got through it just fine and learned to make veggies in different ways with the recipes provided. That gets me to the second problem I had. There are only a handful of recipes in this book and many of them seem to be made for people in Beverly Hills. One of the recipes is for Sea Bass, which by the way, is $24/lb right now and usually expensive (what's wrong with a recipe using Cod or Salmon?). Alot of recipes included uncommon ingredients that I ran to different stores trying to find. Every recipe I tried was pretty tasty and I realize I don't have to go by the recipes alone, but as I've said before, I did not eat very many veggies before, so convenience of different recipes would help. Also--when you are able to eat meat again, you are able to eat 3-4oz of different meats/day---question....is that cooked or uncooked? Some diets say uncooked, but I'll tell you that the 4oz of scallops/shrimp I cooked went right down to about 1oz, so better wording would be great.
Dr. Ian is great, I've watched him on Celebrity Fit Club and he has motivated me eat healthier. Great diet, the book just needs some tweaking.

Another diet. Not the last diet you'll ever need. When I walked 4 miles a day I never dieted. When I injured my heel and couldn't walk, I gained a bunch of weight I'm still getting off. Eat sensibly with enough fiber, water, and fresh veggies & fruit. Avoid fast food and commercial sweets. Use fruit like a banana and organic peanut butter or jelly if you're allergic to PB for desserts. Pop your own corn and avoid all the chemicals. It's sad how many people were raised on fast food and can't figure out why they have health problems. Exercise doesn't mean going from the computer to the refrigerator.

It is a good book, it specifies everything you need to do, everything you need to eat, and what NOT to eat.
Is working, I lost 8 pounds in two weeks. I have not followed it this past weekend because I had some events, but Im sticking to it as much as possible, I also dont exercise often, in the two weeks I only went to the gym 3 times, so if you do stick to the program, you will probably loose more. I reccomend it.

I am nearing the end of Phase II, and I can definitely say that this diet works if you follow it (and actually even if you cheat just a little bit). I have lost a little over 8 pounds and several inches in my waist and hips. The results also look much healthier than they have with past diets. Even though the weight came off pretty quickly, I'm looking a lot more fit than frail. This is in part due to the fact that I am working out more these days, but I think that the amount of veggies and fruits that this diet requires me to eat also makes a big difference.

The diet basically makes you live on vegetables and fruits for the first nine days, and you don't get any kinds of bread until after a month. If this sounds intense, it is. The upside is that you can eat as much as you want all day, but if you don't stock your fridge and keep snacks with you at all times, you will probably cave in to free food at the office, snacks at the coffee shop, etc. If you love junk food and hate veggies, you'll probably do a lot better with something like Weight Watchers, which still lets you keep some of those foods that you like. This will get you faster results, but it's not worth it if you can't follow the diet and are miserable.

I like that this book allows for a lot of freedom when it comes to recipes. You don't have to follow a bunch of specific ones (which for me always entails running to the grocery for expensive stuff I don't have, spending more time cooking than I want to, etc.); you just have to make sure that you stick to cooking with certain foods (namely fruits and veggies). I've noticed in online support groups that this can be a downside if you don't take care to diversify your diet. The book gives you limits on how much of the "allowed foods" you can have each day, but it gives no minimums for what you must have. This worked fine for me, but for people who don't like a good number of fruits and veggies and therefore stick to eating a bunch of bananas or a bunch of sweet potatoes, this could really backfire.

While the book requires that you go back to the beginning of Phase I if you cheat, I will admit that my stomach got a little queasy at the end of Phase I, so I caved and ate half a turkey sandwich. I didn't start over because 9 days of only veggies and fruit was all I could take! The key, I think, is not caving often and not caving with really damaging foods. Phasing in carbs and fat slowly has definitely made me more aware of how much I eat them and why. I've also gotten more used to eating fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Once you get to the final phase (which you keep for life), the diet looks easy to maintain. It even allows for french fries now and then.

The content of the book is very minimal, but this is a plus for me. I don't want to read through all sorts of funny anecdotes or medical explanations; I just want to know what to eat to lose the weight. The diet is based on enough common sense for the book not to have to spend too much time justifying its approach. The only thing that I would have liked is more recipes. Luckily, you can find some online forums where fat smash dieters share some of their favorites. As the diet gains popularity, I'm guessing that more recipes will pop up.

I learned about this diet through a friend at work and figured I'd give it a shot. I'm happy to say that within the first week I lost 7 lbs, and have lost an additional 3 since then, for a total of 10 lbs! It's a relatively easy diet to do, but like any other diet, it requires some dedication. However, as the book says, if you fall off track, it is easy to pick yourself back up. I really loved how easy of a read this book was. Dr. Smith movtivates you to change your lifestyle and presents his weight loss plan in a very clear and concise manner. I think it's a great buy for anyone trying to change their life.

(Hide Review...)  Great diet but the book itself needs some editing
Reviewer Permalink
I've had this book for a while now, but I wanted to wait to write my review until I made it to phase 4. (the last phase in the book)

The book itself is small. But that is not a problem because the principle is pretty basic. The diet is simple to follow and it doesn't require a big huge book to explain how it works.

There is only one reason I didn't give this 5 stars, its because the book contradicts itself. For example, on Phase I, in the chapter on Phase I the books says you can't have juice, for example orange juice. But then, you flip to the back where the receipes are and orange juice is on the very first page as a breakfast recipe. Hmmmm so which is it? Can I have it or can't I? There are a few other spots like this, for example english muffins and peanut butter. So yes, some parts of the book can be confusing.

BUT!!! Even with the weird parts here and there, the diet itself is SOLID. The main concept and food limits in the phases WORKS. Plus if you join the fat smash forumn online, you can figure out the contradictions, plus get a ton of support.

My husband and I started this diet 01/01/08. Today is 3/06/08 so we've been at it for a little over 2 months.

I am 5' 5" tall and my starting weight was 134 lbs. I wanted to lose 15 lbs. Today I weigh 116 lbs. I have lost a total of 18 lbs in 2 months on this diet.

My husband is 6'0" tall and his starting weight was 164.5 lbs. He wanted to lose a lot more than me of course. Today he weighs 130.5 lbs. He's lost 34 lbs!

I am working on maintaing my weight and my hubby is still taking the lbs off. I can tell you that Fat Smash changed both our lives for the better. We are much more educated about food and we also appreciate food a lot more now. This honestly is the last diet you will ever need.

Bottom line... IT WORKS. If you have tried other diets and failed, don't give up! You don't have to give up because Fat Smash is the diet you've been looking for your whole life. This is one diet that will not let you down.

I've been thinking about starting this diet, but there are some things that confuse me. Mainly, in phase 1, Dr. Smith lists juice and cheese as things that are not allowed. However, in the reciepe section for phase 1, it suggests having (for breakfast) a cantaloupe with low-fat yogurt and ORANGE JUICE (p61). Then, for the tasty tomato, it says to use 4 tbsp of grated parmesan CHEESE (p76). Can someone exmplain these contradictions?

I always keep my eye out for good diet books and this one stood out because it is the diet plan that is used on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club show.

First of all, The Fat Smash Diet isn't really a diet, its a weight loss plan. It includes a well laid out diet plan as well as a reasonable exercise plan. The idea behind this is not a trendy one but a sensible one, you don't count calories, but you change your eating habits slowly over the book's 4 phase plan- and meanwhile you add exercise slowly and progressively over time. As you can see, such plans have been proven to work, and will probably last as the aim of the book is to change your eating and exercise habits for a lifetime- amen!

A good book that will benefit many, I give it 5 stars easy. One caveat though. As the first sentence of Chapter 1 warns, "diets don't fail people, people fail diets." Like every weight loss plan you'll ever read about, it can't help you if you don't find a way to stick with it. If you like this book, be sure to check out the more rigorous Extreme Fat Smash Diet.

I've tried every diet I've ever heard of, practically. Weight watchers, slim-fast, the cabbage soup diet, the carbohydrate diet, etc. Nothing ever worked, short of starving myself for a few months, and of course the weight came back on as soon as I went back to eating. This diet WORKS, because he teaches you proper portions, what ingredients to look for, and how to curb cravings. It's not a fad and it's all logical. The best part is the detox, which only lasts 9 days but truly and honestly helps you with cravings. I've already lost 11 pounds and can't WAIT to keep going!

I am totally happy with my purchase of this book. After reading it, I thought it was going to be wayyyy harder than it was. Especially phase one. But before I knew it, day 5 had come and I hadn't really missed any of the crap I was eating before I started. Water is my new best friend, where I thought iced tea (store bought) was the healthier alternative to pop. I lost 7 pounds in the first phase and continued on to lose 14 pounds total in about 5 weeks. The good news is: I did all that by following the plan and not exercising. The bad news is: I didn't exercise. I whole-heartedly believe that this plan works, but like any plan, you have to be active. With the new year here, and with my knowledge on how to eat better; (PORTION CONTROL PEOPLE); I can definately reach my goal weight. Well, I am one of those people who have tried different things to lose weight, and have been successful at losing 20 lbs with Weight Watchers and exercise........but after hitting a plateau and Weight Watchers hitting my pockets I was eager to try something new. It works ya'll. I am down 2.6 lbs in two days. I must say it is not for the faint at heart- I was already working out regularly and watching what I ate (not consistent with my eating) so this has helped me with the "eating part". It didn't bother me that the book was short in text.....I was able to put what I learned into practice right away. I understand that this may be frustrating for someone that has never read up or studied anything about food and how the body metabolizes it. I think it is a great addition to working with your Docter on your own personal plan. But please don't bash it cuz it doesn't work for you......especially if you start this and haven't seen a doctor in years.......there may be other circumstances preventing immediate success. The plan works for most- make no mistake about it.

I have also taken Dr. Ian's advice about doubling up on workouts.....I do the Elyptical machine 5x a week at lunch......and will do Dancing with the Stars Workout dvd several times a week after work to speed up my metabolism even more.
My Numbers:
Start 230.8
Beginning of Day 3 228.2

48.2 more lbs to go..........I'm psyched!!!!!!

P.S. I think weighing in every couple of days helps "me" stay motivated- it prevents me from cheating cuz I'm like nope- not going there- I'm losing weight every single day. Why ruin it now? Flexibility will come soon enough- hang in there!!

This 90-day program has four phases that will move you into a new lifestyle. The phases are: detox, foundation, construction, and the temple. There are directions to help you bust through your plateau and lose those last few pounds. Lastly, there are quick, easy recipes that you can prepare and eat on the go. The recipes are arranged according to the phases and will give you something to look forward to as your change of lifestyle becomes permanent.

Dr. Smith makes things easy for you. The phases are lined out with a certain number of days for each along with a detailed food plan. This is a quick read as there aren't many details as to why of some of the plan. Being on a diet is hard, but changing your lifestyle along with millions of others is phenomenal. The appendix provides you with exact exercise activities, how to read food labels, body mass index and other useful information. Take control, eat for life, have fun and exercise with a friend - this book is the key.

As the first sentence of Chapter 1 warns, "diets don't fail people, people fail diets." Like every weight loss plan you'll ever read about, it can't help you if you don't find a way to stick with it (recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who want to extend the life of their rotator cuff or have a shoulder problem that keeps them from exercising). Good luck.

Almost 130 million people. Sixty million of those persons are obese. Not just overweight, but in fact obese. Sixty million. And nine million severely obese. How did we get to a place in America where we are looking at these startling kinds of stats?
The Fat Smash Diet : The Last Diet You'll Ever Need explains that this is not a diet. This is a lifestyle change. It's a four-phase program that at the end of the program, you now have a new lifestyle. So we say diet, but you're right. It's not like a crash diet. It's a real, healthy program that will take you to good lifestyle changes.

Smith emphasis' when it comes to meals, everything is super-sized. And not just in fast food chains, just in general. You go to restaurants, and the servings are tremendous. People are eating too much. And what happens is our relationship to food in America is very bad. Just think about it. Every time you want to get together with someone, you say let's grab dinner. Let's grab dinner, let's grab a lunch. Because eating is part of our socialization process. We need to change our relationships to food. We need to change how we live around food. And instead of food being so central in our lives, it should just be part of our lives.

The first phase of the program is a healthy, natural detox. It's not about colonics, it's not about supplements or any gimmicks. It's natural foods to help you detox the impurities in your system. That's a nine-day plan. Then you slowly move into the other three phases of the program. Ian K. Smith's goal is to help you with the lifestyle changes. He slowly teach's you how to eat normal foods. You don't have to buy special foods, but normal foods in your grocery. He'll teach you how to reintroduce those foods back into your program, so that now you are worried about portion control, you are grabbing more fruits and vegetables. You're still eating meats and seafood and things. But you're now choosing the right foods. So the program allows you to slowly work back up to eating almost everything, but now you make smarter decisions. Lastly, it's a forgiving diet. Meaning that unlike some other diets, the minute you fall off the diet, then it's history, you're done, no good. With Ian K. Smith's program, because it's a four-phase program, if you start gaining some of the weight back, you can go back to one of the previous phases for a short period of time, get yourself back in gear, and then go back to the end of the diet.

Ian Smith will get you excited with his philosophy, diets should not be expensive. Which means that foods and diet books should not be expensive. There is no need to have a 300-page encyclopedic diet book. It's unnecessary. The Fat Smash Diet program is very simple. Excuse the pun, it'll cut out all the fat. All the unnecessary stuff. All the filler. And I give you what the program is. The Fat Smash Diet is very simple. And that's why it's so thin. It's not something that you have to read in weeks. You should sit down and get through this book, and then go on the program.

It's very easy. Follow the plan and it will be "the last diet you'll ever need". I'm about to begin Phase IV, and I have already lost 23 lbs. And of course, my fiance has lost 30 lbs., but it's all good. It's the cheapest and most effective diet I've ever been on. Thank you Dr. Ian Smith.

This is a simple book with straightforward advice. Easy to read and it costs only a few bucks, so everyone can try it. Fatsmash is not a diet. It's a very simple program for permanent lifestyle change. There is no need to have a large, encyclopedic diet books. It's unnecessary. The Fat Smash Diet program is very simple. In fact it is so simple that it is good idea to supplement it with another great book titled Can We Live 150. This book is much more comprehensive, with more emphasis on healthy living and longevity, proper nutrition being an important, but only small part of it. However the chapter on Obesity is just something you may not miss if you are serious about weight loss. Additionally I recommend signing up for daily yoga exercises. You won't believe how quickly you will succeed. I did.

I am on day four of the Phase One program. It is rough for me because my list of veggies that I enjoy is very limited. My hunger is reduced but it never goes away. I am a very structured person so the lack of details and structure for the food list is troubling to me. I don't think the lay out of the book is benefical for new dieters because of lack of reasons for why certain foods are not included. The chapters are too short and the order of the book is not very good. I am confused about whether in Phase II and on if you can have one serving of meat and one serving of seafood a day? But I love the concept and will stick to it till the end. This is an excellent book for people who have tried diets before and are familar with the concepts since he does not go into great detail in the book. But if you are committed to making a life change this is the book to purchase.

ok, i have always been skeptical about diet books--none of them ever worked. but...i tried this one. i started it in january of this year at the weight of 232. i lost 10 pounds in the first 9 days....40 pounds in the first 3 months...and within 6 months was down a total of 60 pounds which i have been able to keep off using his guidelines for how to eat for the rest of your life. my cholesterol went from 249 to 164 and my blood sugar corrected itself so i didn't have to go on medication for being pre-diabetic. it's the easiest diet i've ever done---once i got through the first 9 days. my hairdresser has done this now and lost 30 pounds. it's an amazing diet--and all it really does it teach you how to eat healthy--we could all use lessons in that!! there are no special shakes or pills. it is a wonderful diet that helped me go from a size 20 to a size 12. i don't know what i would have done without it.

When my girlfriend first told me she was on this diet I pooh-poohed it - I mean, Fat Smash, sounds like such a gimmicky name! But 6 months later, when I saw her in short shorts and a t-shirt, all thin and trim I had to do a double take! She said even her husband lost weight without being on the diet because she was cooking both of them healthier meals. So I bought the book in Mid August and started. I was hungry and skeptical the first day, but by day 3 I was so excited with my weight loss - about 3 pounds - AND the ease in which I was able to stick to the diet - I mean, to be able to eat as many fruits and veggies as you want ALL day AND sweet potatoes (I used I can't believe its not butter spray on them) was amazing. I dropped 10 pounds in Phase 1. After years of dieting and avoiding carbs it was nice to eat a potato, you know? Anyway, I digress. I am now entering week 4 on the diet in Phase 2 and I've losts 20 pounds. I also dropped about 2 dress sizes. Listen, I'm an average person who doesn't work out as much as she should (but I'm now up to 5 days a week - some days I just use a Jump Snap jump rope or I go hiking) and its working for me. Mainly because the diet makes so much sense. It's so healthy - so what if its a thin book? Who has time to read about the principles of weight loss - I like the 'just tell me what to do' approach to the book. Good luck to those struggling with weight loss - I've got a few more pounds to lose, but I'm so psyched by how I look AND feel thanks to working out, that I think I might just be able to stick with this. Thanks Dr. Smith!

Everyone is looking for a quick fix and this is NOT IT!! Being a fan of Celebrity Fit Club, I was looking forward to Dr. Ian's advice (even though he is a vegetarian and I am not). I have been a trainer for 10 years and this is the worst advice ever. If you really want to lose weight sensibly, join Weight Watchers or hire a Registered Dietician. One thing I have learned over the years, doctors are NOT dieticians NOR are they fitness trainers. Never eat less than 1200 calories per day and do not DEPRIVE yourself of foods you love. Simply eat them in moderation...i.e., eat one cookie instead of 10. Weight Watchers teaches you to eat sensibly with proper portion control and you have to weigh in each week which makes you accountable for your eating. Keep a food journal, walk 30 minutes a day and keep your portion sizes reasonable and you will be healthy.

I read the book in less than a hour. It was easy reading and straight to the point. To do this diet it will take commitment and discipline. The vegetable soup recipe was good and will get you through a couple of meals along with a salad. The unlimited fruits helped my "sweets" cravings along with eating 4 to 5 meals a day. I did not miss the meat and bread; but I love cheese and that's probably what I missed the most. Of course the unlimited vegetables was a good thing for me, because I don't always eat enough vegetables. You have to get creative and plan your meals to make it through phase I. I lost 6.5 pound in phase I. I felt good throughout phase one, and I never felt irritable or fatique. I'm looking forward to continuing with the rest of the diet; my goal is to lose between 25 and 30 pounds.

Also, exercise is so important in this plan, so if you are not one to exercise, this plan might not be for you.

I started on the diet after reading the book about a month ago. I will be done with phase two in 5 days. I have lost 15 lbs so far! I am 5'5" and went from 161 lbs to 146 lbs. I spend a good amount of time every day preparing and packaging food (mostly fruits and vegetables) so that I wont cheat. 5 meals is quite a lot to prepare for if you are used to eating out/grabbing something quick to take to work. I have also been going above and beyond with the work out requirements. I have maintained a vegetarian plus seafood diet even though in phase two you can add in some meat if you like. Besides the plateau I hit the week after detox (which was 10 lbs in 9 days), I am losing now usually 1 or 2 lbs a week. This diet has been working great so far and my goal is to get to 125 - 130 lbs. Besides the slight vagueness of how much to eat how many times a day for certain food, and discrepancies with the recipies and "allowed" foods for certain phases, this diet will work. I would not recommend it for people who don't like fruit and vegetables, vegetarian foods, love meat and potatoes, or don't like working out. ALL are ESSENTIAL to your success. If you cant give up meat and potatoes diet, I would recommend something like Weight Watchers which is more flexible.

I thought this book would have more to it. The diet is very simple with not much explaination. A friend of mine has been on this diet for three months and has lost 35 pounds. I have started this diet, but my progress has been slower. As I said, the diet is simple, which is good, but I wish there were more explaination as to what you might expect going through the detoxification phase, etc. I still recommend this book.
