Overheard in New York

This book is so true to form if your a New Yorker. If you don't know your way around then you may not "get it".

This book makes an excellent gift for that displaced New Yorker friend of yours who gets all misty-eyed and nostalgic at the thought of slogging through slush while chewing on a greasy slice of pizza.

I purchased this book for just one such dear friend. She really, really enjoyed her gift (which of course made me very happy) - enjoyed it so much, in fact, that she called me not once, but twice to read it aloud to me on the phone in her inimitable Brooklyn accent. She seemed to really feel that this book gave her a taste of home. And for that I will gladly give the book five stars.

The little snippets of overheard conversation are brief and easy to read, making this a potentially great bathroom book. Enjoy!

This small volume, a highlighting of what is found on the website, makes a wonderful gift for anyone with a quirky sense of humor or who has come home with a story about what they heard on the subway. The book can quickly be read completely or in short snippets. It is a wonderful pick-me-up and a source of endless humor.

Overheard in New York provides an eclectic view into the thoughts, fears, and fantasies of everyday people of our pop culture. Similar to the Post Secret series created by Frank Warren, Friedman has creatively provided a voyeuristic atmosphere for the reader to enjoy.

This book seems to be the best from the website, which is already funny and entertaining. About two months after reading it, I can still recall the best parts. Be sure to not only read the headline and the quote, but also the location where it was overheard, as that can make it even funnier.

I'm a huge fan of this book and site as well as the sister-sites Overheard in the Office and Overheard at College. They're all laugh out loud funny! I heard just recently that they've signed on to do an Overheard in the Office book and can't wait to get my hands on it!!

If I had never been to NY, I would never want to go after reading most of this book. I read on for too long, hoping for a change of tone which never came.

The quoted conversations were the words of people you would not want to meet. They were shallow, uninformed, mean, and long on the repeated use of common scatological and sexual terminology.

I have been to the city many times and overheard thousands of more interesting and print-worth conversations.

I always keep or give away books. This book went into the garbage!

I can't believe no one has given out the website address yet. If you haven't read the inspiration for the book, it's at www.overheardinnewyork.com. And if you have read that website, then I am surprised you haven't bought the book yet. It's just what you would expect from one of the funniest sites online, and having it in book form will change your life. Or, at least, the days when you read it because you will be hard pressed not to laugh!

Heard about it on NPR and had to have it. It has lived up to my expectations beautifully. Reading it is great, but hearing it performed with authentic NY voices would make an excellent audio book.

When I first reviewed this book, I must have been on crack. I gave it four stars, but accused it of leaving out "almost unforgivable" information. Looking through it again, I'm shaking my head, wondering if I was looking at a different book, perhaps Curious George, or Fox on Socks. The New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia has information that is unavailable in any other credible book on wine.

This reference is AMAZING, and belongs on every wine lover's bookshelf, even if you have The Oxford Companion to Wine, The World Atlas of Wine, Ox Clarke's Encyclopedia of Grapes, and others. Many of the maps included in this book are superior to those found in The World Atlas of Wine (strangely odd), and nowhere can you find a more comprehensive listing of major wine producers. Every wine making country in the world is covered (as far as I know), and that is something lacking in other references. I don't mean to knock other references, but each reference has a slightly different slant, each provides information that the other doesn't. To me, this book, along with the aforementioned books, completes an unsurpassed reference quadrology.

If you're an oenophile, or a wannabe oenophile, you need this book on your shelf.
