I bought this book for my first visit to New York City. Imagine my surprise when the type was to small to read. I sure there's lots of great info, but my middle-aged eyes couldn't make it out. Perhaps it should come with a magnifying glass.

This is a well written guide; although, I only used for about 2 weeks. It's useful for learning neighborhoods, but you'll get more by just walking through the neighborhoods yourself. Recommended for those less interested in self exploration or completely clueless about the city.

This guide has exceeded expectations. For someone trying to orient yourself in NY, this guide provides the tools that you need. It is organized by the sections of the city, and provides a comprehensive layout of the city. It also gives useful information on how to navigate through the subway and taxi system. Excellent guide for a NY tourist.

My mom gifted this to me a couple months before I moved to NYC and since then I have referred to it as The Bible. It's gotten me around the city, helped me learn all the pieces in its individual breakdown of the sections of the city, and inspired me to do a lot of exploring. It's full of helpful hints and very detailed maps. Definately consult this if you're visiting the city, but i especially recommend it if you plan on moving here. There are detailed maps of each section that show you everything from the nearest subway line to all the local coffee shops, banks, and laundromats.

The book has clear maps that DEF. help in getting around. The subway locations were clearly marked, and you get a close view of each section of the city. My only complaint is that it always seems like the restaurant, or store, or coffee shop, etc. that I am looking for is never in the book.

This book has saved my neck on more than one occasion. I use it daily to get around the city. It has everything you need. We liked it so much we bought an extra one for our guests when they come to visit- don't want to be parted from it. Never know when you will need to find a great restaurant in mid-town or look up the closest post office or bank or library.... Not to mention the great fold out map of the metro at the back of the book. BRILLIANT buy this book and you won't need to waste any money on others.

I think this book(let) is just awesome. It comes in a size of my pocket-agenda and the many detailed maps (depending on the points of interesent you want it to be shown) are a great helper. I'm going to NYC soon and not as a tourist, but as a visitor, so I really don't need to wait in line in front of Empire State Building - I'll rather browse this book!

This is by far one of the most useful products I've purchased of late. I recently travelled to the city for the second time, and decided to get this in preparation. My friends came to rely on my "little black book," and I was constantly whipping it out...to check the subway map, to look for the nearest restaurant, or to check out museum info. As I begin to prepare for moving to the city next year, I'm not letting this guide out of my sight.

(Hide Review...)  Essential New York City Guide Is Not for Sissies
Reviewer Permalink
This is one aptly titled guide. The target user of the 2007 pocket-sized soft-cover manual is the seasoned traveler who is not really looking for ideas on how to spend a day in Manhattan or what the top ten restaurants are in the city. This is a book that focuses on navigating the complexities of a city with an embarrassment of riches - restaurants, hotels, shopping. At the same time, it also speaks to residents and commuters by listing essential services such as ATMs, emergency rooms, gyms, hardware stores, schools, hospitals, copy shops and supermarkets. As a means to organize the wealth of information, the editors have provided highly graphical maps broken down by neighborhood and categorized the listings in a user-friendly manner.

Other than the lack of timeliness associated with print versus the Web, the major downside of the NFT Guide is the miniscule print, a necessity given the condensed amount of information that is being presented. At the same time, there are helpful sections on parks, transportation hubs and routes, sports, the more renowned landmarks and gay/lesbian life. There is even a fold-out subway map inside the back flap. I found it very useful on my recent weekend trip to New York. I already knew most of the areas I wanted to cover, so this provided me with the detailed logistics I needed when I was there. It doesn't replace the tourist guidebooks flooding the market, but the NFT makes a nice, affordable supplement in any case.

(Hide Review...)  This book got me everywhere...

This book was such a wonderul companion for me when my husband and I moved to NYC for a month. It got me around everywhere. Thanks to NFT, I learned the subways and made it all around Manhattan and into Brooklyn. The maps are wonderful. The print is a little small, but wasn't a problem and it was worth it to have something small enough to fit in my purse.

It leaves out most of the major tourist restaurants, shops, and sights, so it's not a tourist book like it says. But, if you're going to NYC to live for a while or are doing business and need to know the best ways to get from A to B and grad a quick bite while you're at it, get this book!

The back of the book also has wonderful information about at the museums and churches in the city! It's just great.

(Hide Review...)  Beautiful but illegible
Reviewer Permalink
There is only one little problem with this book: the typeface is illegibly small, defeating the purpose of a book meant to be a field guide. It is without question the smallest typeface I have ever seen in a book. Even if you have perfect eyesight (I don't) it's a struggle to read it. For those who have less than perfect eyesight, this book should come packaged with a magnifying glass. Perhaps they made the type so small so the book could be of a pocketable size, but they only partly succeed in this: you need a pretty large jacket pocket to comfortably fit this 451-page tome.

As someone who has done a bit of travelling around the world, I've developed quite a collection of pocket street maps. Had I known this one existed during my first NYC visit, I would have worn it out. Although it says it's not for tourists, sometimes tourists need to know where the nearest Duane Reade or gas station is. This is the perfect book for anyone living, visiting, or planning a trip/move to New York.

I live in Manhattan. I work in Manhattan. I know this city fairly well. This book is my sacred text. I don't leave home without it in my bag.
Sure, it may not have the most comprehensive listings of restaurants (www.menupages.com) or the hippest shopping, but that's one of the main reasons that it's Not For Tourists! (Although I always arm my visiting friends and colleagues with a copy, and they seem to find it invaluable.) But it sure is handy to have this book nearby when you find yourself beyond the borders of your own neighborhood and decide you need a supermarket, a cafe that's not Starbucks or the nearest library branch.
