Penzler Pick, August 2001: Tess Gerritsen left a very successful career as an internist to raise her children and devote more time to writing. After several books that have had moderate success, Gerritsen has now written a gruesome and frightening story that should put her among the top women thriller writers working today.
A serial killer is on the loose in Boston. The victims are killed in a particularly nasty way: cut with a scalpel on the stomach, the intestines and uterus removed, and then the throat slashed. The killer obviously has medical knowledge and has been dubbed "the Surgeon" by the media. Detective Thomas Moore and his partner Rizzoli of the Boston Homicide Unit have discovered something that makes this case even more chilling. Years ago in Savannah a serial killer murdered in exactly the same way. He was finally stopped by his last victim, who shot him as he tried to cut her. That last victim is Dr. Catherine Cordell, who now works as a cardiac surgeon at one of Boston's prestigious hospitals. As the murders continue, it becomes obvious that the killer is drawing closer and closer to Dr. Cordell, who is becoming so frightened that she is virtually unable to function. But she is the only person who can help the police catch this copycat killer. Or is it a copycat? To complicate matters even further, Detective Moore, often referred to as Saint Thomas as he continues to mourn the loss of his wife, is getting emotionally involved with the doctor. The suspense in The Surgeon is almost unbearable. The writing is superb and the stunning twists and turns make it almost impossible to put down. -- Otto Penzler |

I was very anxious getting my hands on this book after I had read all the reviews. The book started out very tense, and I liked the pace. However, towards the middle of the book I had this sneaking suspicion that the "killer" would be somebody the reader had never actually "met". It turned out to be a anonymous person who is always "hidden from the reader" until the very, very end. Unfortunately, that's what spoiled the book for me. I felt let down by the author who decided to drop the suspect right in front of me over the last 20-30 pages without any prior introduction.

The ending is a blatant rip-off of the climax of The Silence of the Lambs. A very well-written rip-off, but a rip-off all the same.
Otherwise, I thought this was a great book, well developed characters, good backgrounds on all of them, and avoidance of most cliches. The only thing I really didn't like was the characterization of Jane Rizzoli. She's the book's other female protagonist, someone we should be empathizing with, and to me, she just came off as a grade-A, you-know-what. Defensive about everything and uber-hostile to Catherine Cordell because she's attractive, and generally in need of a good smackdown. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-15 01:51:47 EST)

While this was an enjoyable read that is well written, I found it to be so typical of so many other serial killer / slasher stories. There wasn't anything that really set this above any other similar story.

I began this book while sitting in the waiting room at my doctor's office. I finished it not long after. This is a great and gripping book with twists and turns. The characters have depth and draw you into their world.
One of the things I really loved about this book is the meticulous research that went into the text. Gerritsen obviously knows her medical facts (because she was a doctor), but she obviously spent a great deal of effort researching other areas of the book as well. A great read. When I started this book I didn't think I would finish it because of the gruesome details but I kept reading on. It turned out to be an excellent book that, while dark in nature and dealing with a difficult subject, kept my interest through the whole thing by keeping it fast paced and moving the plot forward.
I don't generally read this type of genre but it was free for the Kindle so I tried it. I would recommend this book to others as long as they can tolerate the graphic details. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-02 01:43:39 EST)

A must read. Keeps you on the edge. One of the rare books that you cannot put down.
Tess Gerritsens knowledge of the medical field is evident and made this book a pleasure to read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-21 01:42:20 EST)

This book was recommended to me by a friend in England -- said he couldn't put it down. Well, neither could I -- was hooked after the first two pages, and loved it that I couldn't figure out which character was "The Surgeon". Plans are to read anything by Tess Gerritsen that I can get my hands on!

The Surgeon cranks suspense up to the scream extreme.
A surgically adept serial killer comes back (apparently) from the dead to stalk Dr. Catherine Cordell, a beautiful cardiac surgeon who thought she had killed him when he raped her two years before. Now, he's leaving a bloody trail of eviscerated corpses as he closes in on the ever-more-frightened doctor while Detective Thomas Moore of the Boston Homicide Unit try to find him. It's a gruesome, creepy story you won't want to read alone in the hospital late at night. If you like crime novels, this one will surely not disappoint. From the very beginning, it's hard to put this novel down. The unexpected twists further draw you into the story line, and even when you're completely freaked out; want to put the book down because you're wondering, "What is that rapping on the window outside?", you keep going. I liked this book a lot. My only complaint was that the ending, though climactic, was a tad soft and abrupt.
