Reacher's anonymity in Florida is shattered by an investigator who's come looking for him. But hours after his arrival, the stranger is murdered. Retracing the PI's trail back to New York, Reacher's compelled to find out who was looking for him and why. He never expected the reasons to be so personal-and twisted.

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is lying low in Key West, digging up swimming pools by hand. He is not at all pleased when a private detective starts asking questions about him. But when the detective, Costello, turns up dead with his fingertips sliced off, Reacher realizes it is time to move on.
As in Lee Child's two previous thrillers, Die Trying and Killing Floor, Reacher is soon up to his neck in lethal trouble, this time involving a vicious Wall Street manipulator, a mysterious woman (of course), and the livelihood of a whole community. Even the fate of soldiers missing in action in Vietnam is stirred into the brew. But this is not a book by one of the new breed of U.S. thriller writers. Child prides himself on his ability, as an Englishman, to write American thrillers that are utterly convincing in milieu and toughness of action, without a trace of English sensibility. Tripwire is no exception. Every bit as lean and compulsive as its predecessors, it also builds on the freshest aspect of those books: Reacher may be a tough, epic hero, but he always remains human and vulnerable. --Barry Forshaw |

In, Tripwire, a tale of intrigue complicated by a military cover-up, Lee Child pulls the reader along with enough suspense to keep the pages turning, and the trip is enjoyable. However, the book drags in a few places, which could be fixed by tighter writing. Additionally, the hero, Jack Reacher, steps out of character now and then, as do some of the other characters, but all in all, it's a good read.

As far as thrillers go this was very good. The characters were deep and enthralling, keeping your interest all the way through. There was enough suspense to keep you turning the pages, and plenty of action. If you enjoy Lee Child`s Jack Reacher books then this will please you. I`m a series fan and enjoy Child and Michael Connelly books immensely, if you like that kind of thriller read the `Soft Target` books by Conrad Jones. They are unputdownable!! Back to the review, ten out of ten.

I just started this book and it has hold on me already. I like Lee Child's books because they are very absorbing and unpredictable. (What's the use of reading a book if you can figure it out yourself from the beginning/)

Have no problem with the book(s), however am somewhat dissatisfied with winding up with two copies of this title. Admittedly, I somehow selected 2 rather than 1 of "Tripwire", but noticed the mistake and changed it back to 1. However I did not notice it had not been changed to 1 at checkout. The result was getting two copies, and then being informed that since it was my error I would have to pay the postage to return the book which I decided not to do because the postage was half the price of the book.

I have read 4 or 5 of Lee Child's books so far and I can't help feeling that there's something different about his style. Something classier than that of his American counterparts, e.g., Baldachi and Vince Flynn. Would it be because he is English? Even in the violent scenes, he can deliver the same impact without leaving too much gross image in your mind. His storyline is typically very good. Then there's Jack Reacher - a character I've never seen before in any books or movies.
About this particular book, the Hobie guy really pissed me off throughout the book. I was so mad at him that if Reacher didn't take care of him, I'd go to NYC to introduce a 9 mm or two to his brain myself. Beside that, I don't think this book is any better or worse than other books of his. Everybook has a different story and this time it's about what happened in the Vietnam war. You'd enjoy it. The key to a thriller or mystery is to write an opening that snares or hooks the reader into turning the page. Read any Elmore Leonard book for an example. Crisp, clean writing will also propel a reader into the real meat of the story. Unfortunately the first page of this book lacks either. Some editorial cleanup might have eliminated the second appearance of the phrase "wall that wasn't there" or the use of the term "some kind of" as a modifier. The third strike on page one was reading "hot whiteness of the Key West sun" followed by "a hot white sun."
Maybe I'm not giving the author his due, but in every creative writing class one of the early lessons emphasizes these points. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-04 01:40:08 EST)

A real page turner...I couldn't flip through the pages fast enough to get it over with. Tripwire was my first introduction to Jack Reacher, and I don't think we will be getting to know each other better. The mystery wasn't very mysterious and the romance was dull, cliqued, and filled with sophomoric angst.
The weak mystery is covered over with an overly complicated plot and hodgepodge of fluff characters. The two characters that hold any promise of being interesting, Tony and Marlin Stone, are either ignored or given up on in the last several chapters. The only real surprise comes in the end when we find out that Reacher is really Superman and his only weak spot is his head. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-28 01:40:22 EST)

Jack Reacher is usually the man-with-no-name who rides into town, cleans out some bad apples, and slips away into the sunset. This novel, the third in the series, is a change in pace. The novel starts out with Reacher actually working, digging swimming pools by day for the exercise (he is 6 feet 4 inches tall, and has his weight up to 250 pounds) and working nights as a bouncer in a nude bar for $50 and free drinks - they usually involves sitting at the bar, watching the show, and watching the customers (hard work, but someone has to do it LOL).
Reacher's past catches up with him, and he finds himself back playing an investigative role like he did as a military cop (he was a military police major until the Army downsized). The case is initially to investigate exactly what happened to an older couple's son in Vietnam (officially listed as an MIA). The case quickly turns into something else because someone is committing murders to keep things closed. We are introduced to a vicous corporate loan shark who likes to hurt people. He will do bad things to your wife and daughters if you don't pay up. Reacher finds himself involved with people out of his past, and it looks like he might even settle down (you know that's not going to happen if you follow the series). The villains are mean, but Reacher can be even meaner (fight fire with fire). Bodies start to pile up, with a significant amount of colateral damage. The novel is some part mystery, some part thriller, and some part action adventure. The story contains considerable violence (including torture), some sexual content (but nothing graphic), and some language consistent with the plot. Some parts of the novel seemed a bit of a stretch, so I only gave it four stars. The back of the book has a preview of the next novel in the series, "Running Blind." Everything was fine, a typical jack reacher thriller, except the print of the book was suprisingly small, thus difficult to read for older folks like myself.

I love Jack Reacher and hope they never bring him to the big screen cause there's no one I could imagine who could play him. That said, I thought 'Tripwire' was fine. Not the best, but fine. There's a dated quality to the book that's no fault of the writer, where cell phones, called 'mobiles' here are a luxery item and not the modern day replacement of the land line. It's also pre 9/11, so much of the ease with which Reacher walks up to a counter and books a flight is now a thing of the past. The story I found a bit boring at times, and although the final twenty pages or so were gripping, for the first time I called the ending. Still having read all the most recent books, it's fun to go back and see some of the origins of such an unforgettable character.

I enjoyed the first two Reachers and I have to read them all in sequence. This did not disappoint me.
The action and plot sequencing was different from the first two with Reacher playing more of a supporting role -- the main emphasis seems to be on his opponent. The character development for all the characters was remarkable; you weren't aware that these people are being developed as you read. I really appreciate the art that Child is able to put on paper. Every now and then you realize that Child is not an American, but English. How many of you refer to your cell phone as a "mobile"? A bit more character development for Reacher. We learn more about his mentor and the mentor's relationship with him. Geez, I wonder what's in store for me next? (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-04 16:35:22 EST)

Ilove all of Lee Child's books. This one isn't as good as his first, but still worth reading.
