I bought this book and 2 others ("Homefront Club: The Hardheaded Woman's Guide to Raising a Military Family" and "Today's Military Wife: Meeting the Challenges of Service Life") and this is by the far the best one. It only contains relevant data, unlike the others which for the most part contain common sense. This book has a lot of useful information like websites and names of organizations to contact for different things. I would definitely recommend this book to any military wife or fiance.

I'm a military girlfriend who's boyfriend is currently deployed to Iraq. This book looked interesting and seemed like a helpful tool for me while he is away. I started reading it. I got to about the fourth page and decided it wasn't the best for me. It's more for a military spouse with children. The jargon available was helpful, but I was extremely disappointed in the overall quality of information provided. If you're looking for a good read, Separated by Duty, United in Love is an absolutely phenomenal read. THAT is a good book with a lot of advice-written so we civilians can understand the life and duties of servicemembers and it's written by a woman who's been there and seen all of it as a veteran AND as a spouse.

The military changes its rules and policies so rapidly that a lot of the information in this book is actually incorrect. It is also highly biased toward the website www.cinchouse.com and really should be called "Married to the Navy: A Survival Guide for Navy Newlyweds." If you're only currently dating a military man or you're in a different branch is isn't nearly as informative.
It contained a lot of general ground rules on how do keep a long distance (high-stress!) relationship working and it was useful in that way, but I'm of the opinion that there are probably better, more informative books in print than this one. Useful if you know nothing about military life, but in general most of this information can be found on the internet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-11 08:11:03 EST)

Every woman new to the military should read this book. It covers all of the basics that you will need to know and it explains everything in plain english and not military jargon. This book should be given to every woman\wife entering the military!!!!!

Let me preface this comment by saying I am in no way affiliated with the book, website, or Navy, but have been connected to the military my whole life. I've noticed all the women on here complaining about the book being completely inaccurate, bureaucratic, and not helpful in any way, but let me ask you all this: why don't you all leave some advice to people looking for answers instead of nagging on this woman for making an effort to do so?
I understand this book is off in several areas, and it may be "condescending" in others, but it is not a complete waste. For women (and the occasional husband) who know nothing about the military, this is a decent source for just LEARNING a little about how everything works. It more or less just gives you a generalist glance at what military LIFE is like, which is very different for people with no former affiliation to the services. It gives you tips on paperwork and stuff to get done right away, which I know is useful firsthand if you don't want to get screwed by POA type stuff, and ideas for moving which is definitely helpful. Oh, and by the way, when she says stuff about supporting your husband's career, where exactly did it say anything about being a Stepford, stay-at-home, suck-up-to-the Boss Wife? The military life is different, and if anything I think she was saying that a sociable, upstanding wife can be an asset if she's not an ignorant, gossipy person. Like I said, it's not even close to a perfect resource book, but ladies... take it easy on the woman. At least she is trying to help out... why don't you all, in your unbiased manners, provide some links or other books for new military wives to look at? That would be a more beneficial use of your time... Speaking of which, here is a start... [...]... keep in mind this is sometimes a hard to navigate site, unless you know what you are searching for, but like I said it's a start... good luck ladies! This book is great for wives who are just getting to know the military life. The author speaks in a way that is very understandable to the average non-military person. Do not listen to the bad reviews. This book is worth the money. There are great little stories and suggestions even down to hotels that accept pets for when you are pcs'ing. Good luck new wives!
