In the chaos of the combat zone, there are the living, the dead, and the Ghost.
In the ongoing Iraq conflict, there are no battle lines, no direct offensives, no ground won or lost??just the daily fight against an enemy who hits and runs, hides and sneaks. If the enemy shows himself, it?s only for a moment. But for a Marine Sniper, that is all that is needed. Readers now have the opportunity, from these warriors? perspective, to peer into the killing zone through a telescopic lens, down the barrel of a high-powered rifle, and into the very heart of the enemy. The training, the techniques, and the steel will necessary to survive as a sniper are all described in vivid detail. Charles Henderson also delves into the core of the enemy??the maniacal ideology, and the tactics that have sown so much violence in Iraq??and how they are all vulnerable to a single bullet from a Ghost. |

This has to the story of one of the bravest and most dedicated soldiers of all time. This book tells of the dedication to an art form that is need these days more than we care to realize. Not only the story of a soldiers efforts, but also of his struggle with illness and his own actions on the field of battle.

This is probably the best book about snipers I have ever read. I loved it. The writing is excellent, and nicely discriptive. A great book if you want to know some things about snipers and what it means to be a sniper.

I was in the Marine Corp in the late 60s but was fortunate not to make a tour in Nam. Lost quite a few good friends over there.
Saw this book mentioned on the web and couldn't wait to get it. A great moving story of someone we should be grateful to. Many men and women sacrificed their lives for us back here. Just hope people appreciate it. Couldn't put it down. Well written and enlightening. Wally (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-07 08:18:28 EST)

This is a superb biography of Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, Marine sniper, from his enlistment to the brutal end of his second tour in Vietnam. Readers shall be as impressed as me when they remind the chase of the North Vietnamese woman sniper and the killing of a vietcong general. Many stories are so astounding that they stand better than any fiction.
The man was a great warrior. He knew well how to fight and protect the ideals of his country. Excellent. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-06 08:15:13 EST)

Henderson tells the story behind the legend of Carlos Hathcock.
I was already familiar with the many of the stories, but was pleasantly surprised to discover Hathcock was such a "normal" person. He definitely had unique skills and a level of self discipline that is rarely seen but he was also a humble and unassuming gentleman who knew what he needed to do and pursued it regardless of who was watching. His fame is the result of others who told his story based on their respect for his deeds, not because of his own self-promotion. A great book about an outstanding Marine and role model for many. This is a great book. I had wanted to read it ever since reading an article about Carlos Hathcock years ago. I have to say the book is as good as I possibly could of imagined. You get a good feel for the characters and the story is very moving because the characters are real people, not made up.

This book was pretty good - somewhere between a three start & a four star book. I have read two books recently on similar topics & they are far superior. These books were: SOG is a book based on true events in the Vietnam war. and Sniper on the Eastern Front - a true story about a German sniper in WW2. The Marine Sniper book spent a little too much time on telling how Carlos Hathcock won certain sniper competions & became one of the best snipers of his generation. Don't get me wrong, I thing Carlos Hathcock is one of the bravest people I have read about - I just think the book could have spent more on his time in Vietnam & less on his target shooting & how his wife feels about him being in Vietnam.

This book covers the life of Carlos Hathcock, a former US Marine Corp sniper. First off let me just say that Carlos Hathcock was a true hero in every sense of the word. The confidence, bravery and skill that he showed in hunting down the enemy in Vietnam is truly amazing. After reading this book and more on his life, Gunny Hathcock is one of my personal heroes.
As for the book, it is very well written and follows the life and exploits of Hathcock like a novel. I couldn't put the book down and ended up reading it in a little over a day. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in the Vietnam War, warfare in general and especially if you are interested in sniper warfare. I gave it 5 stars because it is now my favorite book, bumping "The Sett" into second place on my list. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-06 19:43:27 EST)

Do you read books that make you just want to burn it because it's so boring? If so you're in for a treat because this book isn't one of those. Marine Sniper is a story about a man named Carlos Hathcock, and his life as a marine. This story is a very descriptive and quick read, and it will keep you wanting more all the way through it. That is why I love this book.
Carlos joined the marine's right after high school, and became a sniper because his great instincts he was perfect for the job. He joined the Marine Corps shooting team, and won the Wimbledon cup for his shooting before he was sent of to Vietnam. Where he was then sent to Vietnam, and then became one of the best snipers ever who lived. He killed many northern Vietnamese, and they soon had a bounty on his head. Still he kept going out "hunting" or on missions to kill the Vietnamese. Right before he was going to go home he went on one last mission. He stalked a general for three days in a wide open grass clearing. He moved slowly enough that at night he had an enemy patrol walk two feet from him and not see him; he even had a snake crawl over him. He killed the general, and was sent home. Once home he ended up reenlisting because he missed the Corps, and wanted to be on the shooting team again. He was sent back to Vietnam, and you will need to read the rest for your self. I had read exerpts from this book and have two videos of interviews with Carlos Hathcock. It is an accurate description of his experience as a Marine sniper in Viet Nam and his life after the horrible injuries that he received there. I purchased this as a gift for a high school friend to give to her grandson, a sniper who will soon return from Iraq.

Excellent narrative extolling the skills and accomplishments of a courageous soldier during the Viet Nam conflict. It's certainly worth reading as it documents the ingenuity and dedication of a brave scout/sniper in a largely unpopular war. Hathcock is representative of the type of young American we can admire.

This book is about Carlos Hathcock, the distinguished Marine Corp sniper of the Vietnam War. Honored in this country, with 93 confirmed enemy kills and having gained notoriety among the enemy as White Feather, because that is what adorned his cap and gained him a bounty on his head. The book is a good portrayal of what it takes to become proficient at sniper warfare, along with its effectiveness in warfare. Although often considered a cowardly method of warfare, the reader will pick up that Hathcock's time in the bush stalking the enemy's position days on end to obtain the perfect shot, but not too close to make escape impossible is a personally courageous act. The book highlights one incident where Hathcock goes one on one with an equally savvy Viet Cong sniper and another four-day stalk within a Viet Cong base camp to bring down a North Vietnamese General. The author's portrayal of Hathcock's banter is not all that humble when discussing himself, but this man can also walk the walk. It is a little sad about the adjustment problems Hathcock has to civilian life. Most civilian jobs pale in comparison to hunting and being hunted by humans., The book is a fast light read with some heart pounding entertainment. The book could have used some more sniper accounts.

Henderson does a great job telling Hathcock's story. I couldn't put this book down. If Vietnam interests you, you have to read this book. Also, Silent Warrior the sequal is great to read as well because it tells a lot of the stories in this book more in depth because Henderson went and found out more info about certain battles. even going as far as interviewing NVA soldiers that were stalked by Hatchcock. One of my favorite books ever. Like the Military Channel? read this book!!!!!!!!
