|
They were called Easy Company-but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered 150% casualties while liberating Europe-an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters was their commander-"the best combat leader in World War II" to his men. This is his story-told in his own words for the first time.
On D-Day, Dick Winters parachuted into France and assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when their commander was killed. He led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. They liberated an S.S. death camp from the horrors of the Holocaust and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat. After briefly serving during the Korean War, Winters was a highly successful businessman. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers--and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries--he is the object of worldwide adulation. Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters's memoir-based on his wartime diary-but it also includes his comrades' untold stories. Virtually all this material is being released for the first time. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war's end. Winner of the Distinguished Service Cross, only he could pen this moving tribute to the human spirit. |

The moral character of Maj. Winters is impecable and unimpeachable. His book is one every kid in school chould read to learn what it is to stand fast in the face of fear and the enemy wether foreign or domestic. This is important now because we may be facing a time when we must once again face a enemy that is domestic. I would hope we would have leadership similar to that given by Maj. Winers.

I am hooked on the mini-series and can almost quote the dialogue. This book fills in a lot of the the missing parts and solidifies a lot of the truths of the film. A well written and very good reading book that is filled with facts and great memories. Probably should be read after seeing the series.

Major Winters' book adds some subtle detail to events outlined in the Band of Brothers from Ambrose, ex: exploits of Speirs on and shortly after D-Day. It also lets you know that there were some events in BoB not completely portrayed as they happened, such as what happened to trooper Albert Blithe.
Major Winters does not elaborate on his own personal feelings, or expound much on what he thought other men may have thought or experienced. He should not have to do so. He earned the right to tell his story his way, and keep private whatever he desires. He explains events respectfully and thoughtfully, as you would expect from a dignified and quietly confident man. There is a great deal of their experience that is not communicable in any way other than experience. I do not understand any criticism of Major Winters in how he wrote this book, and I hope he earned some rewards from the book that he can pass on to his family. Buying his book is probably the only way that I'll ever get to say thank you...that and trying to follow some of his example. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-21 07:00:06 EST)

If you enjoyed the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, this book is likely to appeal to you. Dick Winters gives you much more information about his own life, and he gives considerable information which is not in the movie about his unit. This information is well presented and extremely enjoyable to read after seeing the miniseries. The heart of the book, however, is his comments on leadership. I found them to be inspiring and very usable and useful. They alone would make the book worth reading, although most of the rest of the book wouldn't mean anything to someone that hasn't seen the miniseries. People like Major Winters are a true inspiration to all of us that have never had to experience the horror of war.

Major Winters has written not only a fabulous memoir of his role as company commander of Easy Company and later a Battalion Commander of 506th PIR, but he has also woven into it his very personal story as well as a wonderful manual for leadership that every man in a leadership position should follow.
Like Stephen Ambrose's original book, Band of Brothers, Winters takes us through his entire experience with Easy Company and the 506th PIR from the start of training at Toccoa to the end of the war. Many of the stories Winters tells are the same, but here we get the insights into an outstanding commander's mind--why he makes the decisions he does and what he bases them on. Winters gives us insights into the individual exploits and abilities of the company's most outstanding men and also into the leadership at the company, battalion, and regiment levels. We get the same gritty stories of combat and heroic deeds that made the original Band of Brothers book and TV miniseries so compelling, but now we also get inside the mind of the commander and learn the psychology and the strategy that really makes a combat team, or any team, work successfully under extreme stress. Winters closes the book with an update on the men at the time of writing, including some very moving personal letters. The last chapter is a brief exposition of leadership, closing with a one-page, 10-point summary of what makes a good leader under the heading, "Leadership at the Point of the Bayonet." The memoir is outstanding in every way, but this capstone chapter on leadership is of inestimable value. As I closed the book, I felt some of the same admiration for Dick Winters that his men must have felt. The world yearns for men of character and leadership, and when you've read his personal account, you'll recognize that this is the very personal inside story of a man's man--how he thinks, what he feels, and what makes him and his team so successful. Major Winters is clearly a gentleman and a leader of the finest caliber whose team achieved what they did because he was able to recognize and bring out the best in his men, and they in turn brought out the best in him and in each other. Do not miss this book. It may not have quite the polish of Ambrose's book, but it's more personal, more touching, and it's one of the best books about the war and combat leadership you will ever read. For anyone who watched the mini-series "Band of Brothers" this book fills in a lot of information that could not be used in the movie version. There are photos of the actual individuals during training and later, and gives a glimpse into why this group of airborne soldiers was one of the finest units in Europe during WWII. Dick Winters' commentary by itself is a tribute to the men he served with, and a look at an outstanding infantry commander who gave all the credit to the men he had the honor to serve with.
This is a must-read page-turner that is very hard to put down after you start. Thank you Major Winters for an outstanding book and for your service during the war. You and the others of the Greatest Generation did nothing less than save the world. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-06 19:43:25 EST)

You can always tell a hero... he's the one who will deny it to his last breath. I first found Dick Winters in Band of Brothers, like many others and was taken by the way he handled himself and inspired the men around him. His own book, telling his own story only further solidifys my admiration of the man and the way he lives his life. Anyone who has the same opinion will throughly enjoy his story. He's the kind of guy you wish lived next door.

This was a good book that gave more information into the men of Easy Company. It was an easy read and gave a lot of information, but if you want Major Winters real feelings about some of the other people involved with easy company you should read The Biggest Brother. It feels in the gaps that weren't covered in the mini-series and also the book Band of Brothers. It is gives a more current of where are they now about the men of Easy. The books about these men really make you appreciate what they went through, and make you question if us today would be willing to do the same. These were great men who did an unbelievable job against unbelievable odds, and to hear them talk it was just them doing their job. At least that is the thoughts that run through my mind after reading these books.

I'm a huge "Band of Brothers" fan, book and movie (and anything Screaming Eagles). I finally read Major Winters' book "Beyond Band of Brothers" and the book by Sgt. Bill Guarnere and Pvt. Babe Heffron, "Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends." These books are excellent reads, and really fill in the details about this legendary company of men, addressing a lot that the book and movie don't. I read somewhere that Ambrose said if he had to fight in WWII with any unit in the military, Easy Co. would be it. You can see why after reading the first person accounts. Maj. Winters' book gives more of the technical details and you get to see the internal processes that made him a great leader; Sgt. Guarnere's book isn't technical, it's an account of the personal trials and tribulations of the soldier (no details are spared, and while disturbing, it shows the gritty reality of war). Both books together make you truly appreciate the sacrifices and what went on behind the scenes of one of the best units in history. I watched the movie again after reading these, with more info on the maneuvers from Winters, and knowing more about what he, Guarnere, and Heffron are thinking and going through during different parts of the campaign, it was an unbelievable experience. Makes you appreciate every war veteran's sacrifice. Should be required reading for schools.

Heart tugging rendition of experiences of men at war. Well written but the narrator is a little boring reading it. Would be better in a movie version, I think. Great addition to Band of Brothers collection however.

After seeing the HBO series, Band of Brothers, many times, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Major Winters' memoirs. Winters' chapter on leadership is especially good. The rest of the book adds more depth and interesting details to his story. While I highly recommend buying this book, I don't recommend reading it until you have seen the Band of Brothers series or read the book.

Loved Band of Brothers ... oddly the movie was even better than the Book, but Dick Winter's self account seemed a bit self serving. The focus on Winters and his viewpoint of the events was not as rich as that of the entire "band of brothers". Too bad, I was really looking forward to hearing more about Dick. It could been a case of my overblown expectations but I felt as if the more I learned about Major Winters, the less impressed I became.

I have but one word of advice for the Major: ghostwriter. There is a veritable army of undervalued, underappreciated and overlooked ghostwriters out there just waiting to save people like Major Winters from trampling all over their memoirs with such inane writing.
By now, the story of Easy Company is part of the popular culture, so Winters really needed to dig deep on this one to paint a vivid portrait of his own feelings and experiences in the war. Something less jingoistic than Ambrose with a glimpse of Fussell-esque elaboration would have sufficed. He didn't need to write Ulysses, but this is almost unreadable. Beyond the unimaginative composition, this tome really suffers from a lack of depth. It reads somewhat like a what-I-did-on-my-summer-vacation recounting of places and names without the soul and depth of character that made the HBO series so engaging. I finished that series with a sense that Winters was a truly magnanimous and insightful man, but the portrait of him that emerges in his own writing is that of an immature and petty junior officer. He's so sure of the superiority of his own abilities--and so disdainful of everyone outside Easy Company--that you'd think this was written by a 25 year-old rather than an octogenarian. His opinion of everyone from AAF pilots to ordnance instructors is so low that one wonders how the U.S. Army won the war. In particular, the disdain that he professes for replacement soldiers is truly repugnant, with Winters going so far as to say that he sits at a table with only original "Taccoa Men" at company reunions. So much for Henry V. This book is disappointing in the deepest and most profound sense of the word. Stick with Ambrose's Band of Brothers or Biggest Brother if you must delve any further into Winters's apparently colorless life. It's been said that great artists exist simply in what they create, that a great artist is wholly uninteresting outside of his work. So it is with Major Winters, a man who expressed his beau geste as a combat soldier, but whose musings only detract from the masterful actions in battle that made him a true war hero. Like most people I heard of Easy Company once the miniseries Band of Brothers came out. Major Winters' book is well written and is a fast read. It gives you a lot of information about things that happened in the miniseries that aren't covered in much detail. Additionally, the undertone of the book is about leadership. Who better to learn from than Dick Winters? I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it for anyone who liked the miniseries, read Band of Brothers, or in general enjoys memoirs.

90% of this book is just a rehash of the book and miniseries "Band of Brothers", story for story.
The other 10% consists of a number of details from Dick Winters perspective...such as how he joined the Army and became an officer. There are a number of small additions to the stories from his perspective, mostly of "behind the scenes" type additions as to what happened and why. At the end, there is a monologue on leadership. Quite frankly, get this book from your library if you want to read it. I cannot understand why so many people give this such a high rating. If you haven't seen or read "BoB", this book may be unique. For a longtime fan, its disappointing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-14 06:36:23 EST)

You may recall the book by Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers : E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, a unit history of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment from its inception in July 1942 to occupation duty in Austria after the Nazi surrender. Much of the story focused on Richard "Dick" Winters, who rose from Easy Company's 2nd Platoon leader to 2nd Battalion commander over the course of the war. Winter's character was played by Damian Lewis in the TV miniseries Band of Brothers produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg for HBO, arguably the best small screen miniseries ever created.
BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS (BBB) is the war memoirs of Dick Winters, written with a certain Colonel Cole Kingseed, the nature of whose contribution to the whole goes unexplained in the narrative. But, no matter, really. BBB essentially follows, and ostensibly embellishes with insider knowledge, the history of Easy Company as outlined in the original book: training at Toccoa, GA and in southern England, the D-Day parachute drop into France, the slog through Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, the discovery of the Buchloe concentration camp, the capture of Berchtesgaden, and the post-surrender occupation duty in Kaprun, Austria. Even with Kingseed's help, Winters is no Stephen Ambrose. His narrative, aided by a reasonably illustrative photographic section, is business-like and competent but not inspired. A glaring omission is the lack of battlefield maps, which would have been especially helpful for the D-Day, Holland, and Bastogne campaigns. And Winter's makes repeated reference to a mysterious "friend" back in the States, DeEtta Almon, with whom he carries on a sporadic and sometimes awkward correspondence. Is this the "Ethel" he married after returning home? Did I miss something? BBB is obviously the author's farewell tribute to his comrades-in-arms. As such, he can be forgiven the last couple of chapters which drip with nostalgia. If not now, when? And Winters and his men certainly deserve the written memory. I served in the Navy for nearly eleven years. I can recall only one superior whom I would've followed to hell and back. (Mike P. at Florida's Blood Center, are you taking note?) Such a leader is rare in military and civilian life. Dick Winters comes across as such. Because of that, I'm awarding BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS 4 stars and a salute to its author. Honor is due. AudioFile got it wrong. Damian Lewis played Winters (very well I might add)in the HBO mini series and Tom Hanks co-produced it w/Spielberg. AudioFile must not have watched the HBO show or they wouldn't have got that one wrong in their review. Small potatoes, but geez, who's their fact checker and editor? Further confirms the limited use of a reviews especially by a "critic".
I highly recommend reading Ambroses book then watching the series. I am looking foreword to reading Dick Winters book as soon as I get it in the mail. Cheers. KJM (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-29 04:41:52 EST)

This book was just as good as I thought it would be. Major Winters as a junior officer was more than a leader; he was an inspiration. His description of his experiences during the campaigns fought in Europe during WWII brought back memories of my older brother, uncle, brother-in-law and their personal experiences as well.

Major Richard Winters is a humble man, great leader and earned the respect of his men by showing the way, leading the men from the front, from the D-day one til the end of the WW2 in Europe. It was a real pleasure to read this one.

Let me start by saying I have nothing but the highest gratitude and respect for all the men of Easy Company - in fact for everyone involved in the horrific conflict that was WWII. Having said that, I am disappointed in this book. In spite of what the tag-lines say, there is really not much new information regarding individual Easy Company soldiers that was not contained in the 'Band of Brothers' and/or the mini-series.

Major Dick Winters is truly one of our greatest heroes, though you'd never know it by his storytelling. He is the humblest of men, yet writes so prolifically of his experiences from entering parachute/airborne training to the famous D-Day jump in Normandy, to V-E Day, as leader of an outstanding group of soldiers known as Easy Company. A must read for any history enthusiast, and a book to definitely keep in one's personal library to pass on to others, and read over and over. Such courage, sacrifice and deep respect for men of war and comrades at arms is rarely heard of today. We need to remember with deep respect, honor and humility what these brave, awesome men have done for the sake of freedom. It will touch your soul.

I feel like a heretic, giving Dick Winters' story only three stars when I give both Ambrose's book and the TV miniseries, oh, ten stars. But as much as I was into the content, the choppy style was terribly annoying. I felt no "flow" in the narrative, which was why it took me about five or six sessions to finish it - where I read Ambrose straight through in one sitting. Like many "believers," Winters is all too ready to ascribe anything good, up to and including his rifle aim, to his religious faith. Wonder how Muck and Pincala felt about that. And it seemed like he managed to cite, at one point or another, just about every soldier under his command as "one of the finest soldiers I ever saw." After about the tenth "finest" it kinda loses some power. But, hey, everyone else who reviewed this book said it was great, so maybe it's just me...

I ordered a new release historical non fiction hardback book and purchased it through Amazon for a fraction of the bookstore price. I received it in a short time by mail. The book was new. I have become a regular customer of Amazon.
The content of "Beyond Band of Brothers" is excellent. I appreciate that Dick Winterw took the time and effort to co author his biography of his acions during WWII. The book is easy reading and gives a direct, no frills account of the war from one of the few front line combat leaders that survived that most horrific American involvement in the war in Europe physically whole. To me, Major Winters is a true American hero. He fought that war from beginning to end. This is his story and how he saw it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-03 04:08:24 EST)

Beyond Band of Brothers is the incredible story of an extraordinary man. Most of the content will be familiar to anyone who's read the Stephen Ambrose book or the seen the HBO series. Here, Winters offers a fascinating personal perspective on his time with the 101st Airbourne. It's by no means a perfect book, though. You can't help thinking that Winters was let down by his co-writer - there are some sentences crying out for spit and polish and the lack of detail from Winters later life (particularly the omission of virtually any reference to his wife) may leave you wishing the book was truer to its title. But despite this, Beyond Band of Brothers is a tremendously inspiring and enjoyable read.

Very thoughtful and thought-provoking book. Lots of information to fill-in-the-blanks of the mini-series and the book on the Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose. This author not only inspires by example, he inspires by words. I am a 50 year old woman with a Ph.D. in psychology and I have learned more about how I want to live and be in life from Major Dick Winters than from any person or any book I have ever encountered.

The long and short of it is, if you liked Band of Brothers, you will love this. Major Winters and Colonel Cole C. Kingseed do an excellent job of expanding on the history of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. This book contains Major Winters personal incite into on of World War II's finest companies. A must read for anyone intrested in World War II or militay history in general. I would describe the book as not only a history book or an autobiography but a field guide to leadership.

While I admire Dick Winters and Beyond Band of Brothers is well written, it doesn't add anything new to the story. Sure, it verifies Ambrose's research, but that's about it.
Band of Brothers, Beyond Band of Brothers, and the movie complement each other extremely well. Ambrose's book and movie tell a complete story, or at least what appears to be complete. If there is more (and I'm sure there is because it's war and war is more complex then the hero story of Easy Company), Winters didn't spill the beans. We do read some of Major Winter's justification for his actions and we get inside many of his thoughts, but once in there, I realized Winters only confirms what Ambrose already told (or suggested to) us. But please don't think I didn't enjoy the book. I did. I deeply respect the Winters and men of Easy Company. I loved Band of Brothers (the book and the movie). Beyond Band of Brothers is on par with those works. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-23 14:01:23 EST)

Over all it was a disappointment. I thought he would go into detail about his experiences but it was a rehash of the Band of Brothers book except it had much less detail. He never gave you the feeling of being there and his thoughts as he was going through combat. He did cover his life after the war. Some of Amborse's books had the same problem, he never gets into specifics.
Knowing the details is the most interesting part. You can get the overview from history books. Retired Naval Security Group (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-14 13:25:09 EST)

Major Dick Winters war memoirs is a great read for anyone interested in the combat-level experiences of WWII. I read Band of Brothers, own the mini-series and have read numerous accounts of the exploits of the American Airborne troops during the war, but I read with rapt attention to Maj Winters accounts, having been already familiar with them. What I liked especially was his views on the relationships carried out by the members of E Company and the 506th as a whole. I would recommend this heartily.

I love WWII books and movies and have tremendous respect for the men who fought there as well as for Dick Winters who is an inspiration to me. However, the book read as if Major Winters watched the movie and simultaneously described everything in his own words for the book. Even the smallest details were written about such as his belief in not writing about accounts in first person because he didn't want to take credit away from his men and then in the movie Nixon walks up to him while he was writing and says "y'know it would be alot easier of you used the word me sometiumes.". To me, the movie was either made verbatim to Dick Winters memoirs or vice versa. I was a little dissappointed because in the intro he states how there were so many new and interesting stories not recounted before that he wanted to get across.....but there was hardly nothing at all that was not in the movie. Still was a good book even if you saw the movie, and if you have NOT seen the movie you will LOVE this book!

If you loved BoB, you will love this. It fills in some of the gaps of the movie, and sheds some extra, interesting detail to E Company. Winters talks about his men in such a personal manner. You can sense his affection and admiration of them. You really can hear his voice as you are reading.
Get it, you won't be disappointed. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-08 21:30:54 EST)

I know this may be harsh, and if you are a fan of WWII, Easy, and/or Band of Brothers, this will NOT bring more in depth knowledge of E company, the characters in the book or the miniseries. The initial review of this book is correct, impersonal, and a re-hash of stories we've read/heard/seen, with no perceivable new perspective from Major Winters. Please know that I admire him as much as ever, but this book was "unfulfulling". Don't bother with this!!!!!!

As a very interested WWII history buff, I was drawn to "Band of Brothers" in both print and the A and E TV drama. After reading the book and seeing the movie, I was left with a desire to find out what happened to some of the other characters in the story and what happened to them after the war. I was especially interested in what Dick Winters did after the war and up until now. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who sees the "greatest generation" as the epitome of American citizenship.

The book is well written, and covers the essential points of his life in the Army. A good companion to the "Band of Brothers" material. Highly recommended for people who want to know more about Major Winters and the events he was involved in during WWII.

This is a great book from the man who very humbly shows the reader that a man who does his best, can and will accomplish much. I read this before seeing the mini-series and was somewhat disappointed in the movie version. There is some recap if you have read Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, and the Biggest Brother, by Larry Alexander, but there is plenty of good information. I highly recommend.

As a fan and admirer of Band of Brothers and Easy Company this book helps to bring closure to a great story of courage, honor, and heroism. While I would admit that the writing is not "Pulitzer" material, it doesn't have to be. This is written for those who have enjoyed the Band of Brothers story and wish to have some final thoughts from its vaunted leader. It does that in characteristic fashion with humility and honesty. The book reveals, at times almost serendipitously, true insights into leadership that apply across a wide range of professions. One cannot read this book without realizing that you are in the company of greatness. Highly recommended to those who appreciate the Band of Brothers story.

In many ways I found Maj. Winters' memoirs far more engaging than Stephen Ambrose's work. Maj. Winters gives a very candid and honest account of his life in the service. It is especially eye-opening to have more exposition - more on his life before entering the Army. I also strongly value his no nonsense philosophy on leadership he shared in detail in this work. This is more than simply a good book about World War II, it's a good book for anyone!
