What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause (TM) : The Breakthrough Book on Natural Hormone Balance

The classic bestseller that has helped nearly a million women discover the answer to menopause is now revised and updated. Hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, low sex drive, hair loss, fibroids, and osteoporosis-most women will experience these or other hormone- related problems at some point as they age. In clear, easy-to-understand language, an internationally recognized expert explains the benefits of using progesterone and other natural hormones to reduce or eliminate menopausal symptoms safely and effectively-without the harmful side effects created by commonly used synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Dr. Lee explains why conventional HRT drugs can be harmful and offers an easy-to-follow non-prescription 'Hormone Balance' program that tells readers how to stay energized, strong, and sexually vigorous during the menopausal years and beyond.

Could write volumns on how this book has helped me. I am an estrogen positive, stage IV, breast cancer survivor. My markers were up and 2/16 ratio for bad estrogen was off the charts it was so high. In coordination with my compounding pharmacist and OB/GYN, we used progesterone to lower the estrogen dominance and bring my markers back down. I learned about progesterone and it's many benefits from this book. The information lead to regimen that "saved my life".

This book and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause", have helped me so much to know what is going on with me and my body and to assist me in finding ways to help myself. Topical, natural Progesterone has been a life saver, no more hot flashes or night sweats, and it is helping my mood to stabilize. His books explain the difference between natural and 'man made' and how the chemical composition needs to be the same chemical composition as created by our bodies. I refer back to both of these books often and have been taking vitamins and supplements. I have found these to be a wealth of wisdom.

I was geared up to read this book cover to cover without wanting to put it down in between but was disappointed in that I found it boring to and NOT full of valuable info. (I was already aware of)! The author died in 2003, there's much better and updated versions of the info. contained in this book.

This book has more information on menopause than any one person needs. It covers so many individuals and gives you direction to approach your doctor about treatment for symptoms. It is scary how the pharmaceutical/medical areas can get so involved in "a pill for everything" mentality. I bought two books by Dr. Lee at the same time, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer and WYDMNTYA Menopause. I can't recommend these books highly enough. I would consider myself one of the most educated consumers out there on matters of health, and yet I was just astonished at the amount of crucial information about women and hormones, and artificial hormones, as well as other lifestyle habits which contribute to imbalance and even cancer. I wish I knew this information 30 years ago, 20 years ago 5 years ago. I will help myself and my mother and my daughters with this knowledge. The fact that these books are several years old matters not a whit because most people and most doctors are badly underinformed on this topic.

(Hide Review...)  Essential Reading for All Women
Reviewer Permalink
Women at every stage of life should read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". No one is too young or too old to read them. The late Dr. Lee had nothing to sell except the important information in the books. Of course everyone is an individual; naturally every statement won't apply to one and all, and that is OK. The books obviously are not a substitute for competent medical care; however, you make the best decisions when you have the most information. Incidentally, you may meet some people who have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books and will say they advise women never use estrogen in any form. He strongly advised against the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone. These are not bio-identical and have been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee had said beforehand. Dr. Lee's outstanding contribution was in helping us understand the uses and benefits of natural progesterone cream, offering information you may not hear from your doctor ... this natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter. Unlike the synthetic prescribed forms, this cream has the same chemistry as that made by the body. It is derived from plants and is used transdermally for most effective results. It is a wonderful supplement for many women with many benefits but the key is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone. Bone is automatically lost during the menopausal years and the progesterone was well-proven by Dr. Lee to work by his carefully documented studies over many years. Also excellent are the book "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and the book "Smart Medicine for Menopause" and any other book by Sandra Cabot, M.D. Here's to good health and competent advice!

I read the precursor to this book a few (OK, more) years ago - What Your Doctor May not Tell You About Premenopause - and it was absolutely wonderful. So I bought this book, and was not disappointed! The information and timely advice has changed the way I feel. Following it has given me new energy and brought my body (and life) back into balance. If you (or someone you love) is at, or preparing for, this stage of life, it's a must-read!

Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.

Back-to-back, I've read this book and the other one by Dr. John Lee, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre Menopause: Balance Your Hormones And Your Life From Thirty To Fifty." Although the one just mentioned is more pertinent to my age group, and both books cover much of the same ground, I chose to review this book because it seems to be more in-depth. Both books, however, are laden with valuable information for women of any age.

The late Dr. Lee had done his homework even after medical school ended and it showed within both of his books. Everything is explained simply, concisely, thoroughly and in easily understandable terms.

Topics include: biochemistry of the body and synthetic drugs and hormones, mechanisms of the body, glands and functions, the estrogen myth and results of HRT study, female cancers and causes, autoimmune disorders, pros of natural progesterone and details of all relevant hormones, the pharmaceutical community and conventional medicine practices, illness and natural prevention, nutrition and exercise, osteoporosis and bone re-building, vitamins, herbs and minerals, heart disease and strokes, insulin and glucose, thyroid problems, liver health and many, many more that tie everything together so sensibly.

Without the specific label of a holistic doctor, Dr. Lee obviously believed and practiced a more natural way for his patients to live with optimal health and well-being. His books attest to the facts that natural is always best; synthetic drugs will always have side effects because they are foreign substances to our bodies; radical surgery is not always the best answer and menopause is not a to-be-feared disease.

All women need to read this book to become informed of the problems we are facing today. Very very good reading- recommend to everyone, especially those with symptoms they cannot understand or get help for from their doctors. It's not all in our heads! I have even started selling a great progesterone cream because of so many women I see who need it. Like the book says, you need to find a good quality cream if you want it to work! There are alot of inferior creams out there and many will not work at all. Good luck!

As one who had a 15-year-long battle with all the "joys" of menopause -- insomnia, hot-flashes, night sweats, brain fog, etc -- I can tell you this book is a Godsend. I finally found someone who could really talk knowledgeably about my problems and give some firm recommendations that were tried and tested in a medical setting and had benefitted hundreds of women in Dr. Lee's own clinical practice. I also found a wonderful treasure trove of information about osteoporosis, often not discussed in connection with menopause, and a condition that is usually treated with estrogen. Dr. Lee gives the reader a full load of good information about the benefits of natural progesterone for bone health. I am profoundly grateful! Get the book! You'll be glad you did!

Dr. Lee gives helpful information on alternative hormone therapy in this book. "Natural Hormone" treatment is simply "Bio-identical" Hormone treatment and is available from a compounding pharmacist. I am using this treatment option at the present time as a result of studying this book. I also use the book as a reference whenever I have questions from other women in perimenopause or menopause about symptoms, side effects, or treatment. I am doing well and am comforted by the fact that there is a "Natural", easily available, treatment alternative.

In this book I found all the information I needed to help me get the perfect HRT for my needs. There I found the explanation for all the problems I had due to lack of hormones and wrong replacent therapy. It is all there, in a simple but at the same time precise and scientifically correct way. An I also discovered how dangerous it is to deliver to a doctor all the responsibility when it comes to choose the correct HRT.

When I came across this book, I was totally intimidated by the subject of menopause and hormone replacement therapy; this is no longer the case! Although a little on the technical side, I found this book to be extremely thorough in helping me understand that I do not need to go the route of traditional HRT. I've used the bioidentical progesterone cream since 2002, and at 52 I've only had two (2) incidents of night sweats and hot flashes because I'd slacked off on using the cream. After each incident, I started back using the natural progesterone cream and have had no reoccuring symptoms. In fact, I feel great!

I would give this book SIX stars if I could. It's written for today's woman who wants to be in charge of her life. A bit technical but that gives it weight. Cited are many studies done over a period of several years in other countries as well as the U.S., plus charts, graphs, and even letters from happy women who were patients of Dr. Lee. I had significant results after only one month of using natural progesterone cream. I'm on a mission to educate my female family members, friends and even acquaintances. It IS that important!
