Every parent, teacher, family member and care taker of a child with sensory processing disorder should read this book. It's an easy read that really breaks down the basics into digestible nuggets. A top book on the subject.

After checking this book out at the local library numerous times, I decided to purchase it. I especially like how it compares the different behaviors and gives suggestions as to how to recognize and then how to help overcome some of these challenges.

When you finally have a resource in your hands that shows a mirror to the child you're trying to help...well, you know what a great feeling that can be. While I could re-read many sections so that I could better understand the deficiencies my child's nervous system has, I came away from this book knowing that I finally have a handbook on his problems. It's a very comprehensive collection of both explanation and resources. I'm telling my whole family to read it.

This book title was given to me by an OT. Since I knew little about the sensory issues in children I bought it. Was I ever glad I did. It has really helped me deal with the student in my classroom. Plus it has made me aware of possible sensory problems in my future students.

I found this book to be very informative about sensory disorders and ways to help children overcome them.

The first section dealt with the types of sensory disorders. This became somewhat drawn out for me. There were paragraphs about each type of sensory processing along with a chart of normal and SPD kids reactions. I found that the charts were more interesting to read and that I was able to see the disconnection of the child with SPD much better. The checklists for identifying which SPD your child might have were interesting in the details it provides. Unfortunately(?), my son never really fell into one category but had a few "hits" in many categories.

The second part dealt with ways to help SPD kids overcome their issues. I found this section to be the best part of the book. It showed ways to provide support at home and at school. It gave examples again between normal and SPD kids. I found myself highlighting much of the chapter on how to help kids with SPD progress. I'm looking forward to working with my son on those activities.

Overall, the book was very good. For those who have researched SPD before, the first section might be a bit repetitive. But, the second section was well worth it!

This book was recommended to me by my son's occupational therapist. I finally got around to reading it about six months into his therapy. My only regret is that it took me so long! It brought comfort to my husband and I that much of our child's "difficult" behaviors could be explained in such a sensible way. For instance, we never could understand why he would hit other children at daycare when they tried to gently touch his shoulder. Now we realize that light touch actually is painful to him. The quizzes are wonderfully effective tools. They helped us to know what specific things we needed to ask our OT to help him with.

This book has been Heaven sent, in helping to understand and developed stratigies for my 4 year old son, with Sensory Intergration function and High Functioning Autism. Don't get me wrong it is not a cure all, but helped me understand his sensory issues; therefore, I could aide him in certain areas. I was also able to communicate better with his OT and Developmental Pediatician. I have gained an insight into which sensory areas he has difficuly with. One Example: Never really understood why he would only sleep with 3 blankets over him, covered head to toe. After reading this book, I have come to realize he has a sensory need for deep pressure/touch. Light touch/pressure stimulates a pain response for him. Once this was realized, I spoke with his OT who gave me a list of techinques to intergrate deep pressure into his daily routine. Now this need is not as frequent in some areas. Highly recommend this book to anyone who cares for or teaches children with sensory issues. I have recommended this book to two parents, whom were grateful to have read it. It's clear cut, not full of medical jargon. I am gratefull to the authors for writting this book.

As a clinical psychologist, I have found this book to be invaluable in learning how to screen for Sensory Integration/Processing Disorders, to make recommendations for more precise assessment & services, and to educate parents and other clinicians about this area of practice. Most mental health clinicians--and even teachers--are fairly unknowing when it comes to this topic, I have found. I know that I was certainly in the dark about it until obtaining this book. The only complaint I can make is that the actual book itself is 'poorly integrated' and just completely fell apart after a couple of years! I wish there was a hardback version, but I am going to order a copy of the revised edition and hope for an improved binding! Highly, highly recommended for clinicians, educators, and parents.

If you have a child that is just a little "out-of-sync" with their peers, this book is for you! A college friend that was a practicing Occupational Therapist recommended this book after I asked for her opinion on my second childs behavior during a gathering of friends at our home a few years ago. At the time (2003 - I read the first edition of the book), not many doctors or therapists were educated in working with sensory disorders. Even today 5 years later, many people will look at you like you have 10 heads if you start talking about it. I however, felt that the author must have been hiding in my house while writing the book. It was my child to a tee! I have continued to recommend this book no less than once a month since then and get feedback from people that it was perfect for understanding their child.

this book answers all the questions ive ever had about my special needs child. it is so well written. ive bought a copy for all of my close family members so they know all the aspects of my childs disorder. saying i love it would be an understatement.

This book was some what helpful if you have no idea what Sensory is. However, I found it to technical and little information on an action plan or helpful hints!

This book was recommended by my son's OT as a springboard to understanding SPD. I found it to be enlightening and informative. Some of the technical chapters can get a bit tangled but the advice given is valuable to any parent with an SPD affected child. Awareness is the first step and this book contains tools to help a parent recognize and seek help for their child. I highly recommend it.

This book is a MUST HAVE if you have a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, SID, autism, Asperger's ANYTHING! It has things to look for and helps you to understand SPD much more! Also great for kids who work with special needs kids!

This book was recommended to me by an Occupational Therapist after he evaluated my son through the state. At this point, I had no idea what SI was or that my son had it (also autism diagnosis). Since then, this book has become my primary resource for my son and other children I encounter. I've given copies to every member of my family and to my son's teachers. Why? Because it explains why kids do and act the way they do when they have sensory dysfunction.

One thing my son used to do was put his head on the ground to look at toys. He also used to avoid touching paint, glue, playDoh. He couldn't tolerate a playground and even family birthday parties were overwhelming. This book explains all of these things - all of the reasons why my son was acting the way he was. And since then, with the help of an occupational therapist, we've corrected these behaviors. My son is happier than ever. He still has SI, but he knows how to avoid certain situations and he's learning how to adapt to school, parks, the world in general.

Carol Stock Kranowitz explains and gives examples of why some kids act out in class, are aggressive, shy, etc. Anyone who is around special needs children will benefit from the knowledge on these pages. It's changed my entire world.

Like with anything new, learning the ins and outs of sensory integration takes time. It's not a super easy read and until you're familiar with the terms (tactile, vestibular, proprioception, gravitational insecurity, etc) it takes some getting used to. Don't be turned off by this last sentence, anyone can learn it and understand and then apply the techniques.

Id even recommend this for parents of typical children as everyone can benefit.

This was a great book. Very helpful. Our daughter has been diagonsed with Dyspraxia and Hypotonia and this book really hit the mark for us. It cleary explained things that had been difficult to understand regarding her behavior. It was recommended by our daughter's Occupational Therapist.

If your child has been dx with sensory issues this book gives a step-by-step explanation of reactions and interventions that will give a parent alot of "aha" moments.

An Occupational Therapist suggested this book and I bought it right away. Only half way through it I'm seeing a connection between my child's behavior and his possible sensory issues. What an eye opener! I bought the companion book, The Out-of Sync Child Has Fun. I've already tried some of the exercises with great success. What a difference!

LIKE THIS BOOK, HELPED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON IN AN EASY FORMAT, KINDA TECHNICAL AT TIMES BUT HELPFUL OVER ALL. FIRST ONE I TELL FRIENDS TO READ IF THEY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT IT.

It would be wonderful if teachers had time to read this book. It might help them understand some of their students better and realize what it feels like to "be" in a classroom. As a parent of children that this book could have been written about, I truly appreciate the way the author captured what it is like to live in our noisy, smelly, visually over stimulating world.

Excellent resource, written in plain language about sensory integration. Parents and educators can use easy to use check lists and read descriptive antedotes that help determine children's needs. Strategies help the reader comprehend how sensory processing disorder is treated -- fitting need with the body-mind/neuro-biological reasons for the disconnect between how the senses communicate with the mind.

I found this book to be very easy to understand and it gave me some real insights into certain behavior problems that I have observed. It certainly had me seeing this child in a new and more positive light. I glad that it was recommended to me.

This book was full of great ideas and info but it my car manual reads smoother.

My son's OT therapist recommended both this book and the handbook. This book is a must read for parents who have sensory impaired children. I also think this book should be required reading for educators, especially resource teachers.

I did not understand what was going on with my little one until I read this book. I realized other issues that I had not noticed with my little one until I read this. I was able to help my child more and understand that he needed more services after I read this book.

If you even think that your child may have SPD this is the book to buy. It explains things in a not so technical-medical way. This is a book that should be considered the bible of SPD! This book has helped us deal with my daughter and helped her school understand and help her as well! I can't say enough GREAT things! I highly recommend this!

I found this book to be one of the most readable books out there on the topic (sensory processing disorder). Not only was it valuable to me as an occupational therapist but I can recommend it to parents whose children I work with. I know they will get the information without too much medical jargon and with helpful strategies and resources.

This is one of those must have guides when finding out your child has SPD. It is very informative, insightful, and inspiring. It helps make sense to a not so well known disorder that affects many.

This easy to understand - if you have the courage - book is a wonderful guide into the external and internal world of sensory challenged children. These children do not intend to act out or withdraw as they desperately try to make sense of the confusion that is there view of the world and cope with their internal emotions we easily deal with. These children are not hyperactive or attention deficit but caregivers and teachers need to understand that to reach these children requires a different approach. This practical book gives wonderful advice on understanding and nurturing sensory challenged children. I have bought several more copies to give to relatives so they too can understand why my child is different but still able to function as a healthy normal child with an environment of love and understanding.

Before you buy this book make sure you also buy at the same time "The Out of Sync Child has Fun."

Why , because you need both - The first book presents lots of different case studies but is strategy poor.

We had a feeling something was up with our youngest son. His reactions to challenges were hysterical. Even since birth he had a difficult time dealing with things that weren't the way he thought they should be. People told me that he was fine. Some kids are just cranky, some kids are just never very happy. But my gut was telling me something different. It helped that our family physician knows me personally- and believes me. She sent us to Occupational Therapy and recommended this book. Occupational therapy has made all of the difference, but this book helped me to recognize what was up with my son and gave me ideas to deal with it. This book alone can't do it- if you suspect your child has sensory processing disorder, the book will help to solidfy your belief- but no matter how physically healthy your child is, insist on an evaluation- the earlier the better. My son is 100% happier and easier to deal with now at 18 months after just three months of OT. The book itself helps to describe what is going on in clear and understandable language and illustrates with examples. It's a great handbook for SPD (or SID). "The Out-of-Sync Child has fun" is also great and full of creative and fun ways to help sensory integration and to just have fun.

GREAT! WONDERFUL! I'm not alone! This book described my 5 year old perfectly. I now have a better understanding of him, and therefore have become a better parent to him. Our whole house is now more in sync! A must read for parents of all children!

I felt so relieved after reading this book. People do not understand what it's like to have a child with sensory issues. These kids are NOT brats, spoiled, getting their own way.. This is a DISORDER and the public needs to be educated to such. I 100% recommend this book to anyone with or without a child with sensory issues. I would have given it 5 stars, I just wish the book had MORE information on dealing with the crisis when they occur. The book is good on information, but only lacking in the moral support area. Still, an excellent read, well worth the value.

This book opened the door to my understanding of Sensory Processing Disorder and has given me the tools to understand and advocate for my own sensory sensitive child. I have bought copies for other family members as well. I now understand the basic underlying reasons why my child reacts to certain situations the way that she does, and have gained tremmendous patience with this new understanding and have taught others to understand her triggers and needs better. It has made for better family dinners and play dates overall. We still have a way to go, but we are making progress.

I got the book in great condition, and I can't really review it higher because I haven't gotten through the whole book yet. It seems very helpful so far, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

I was told about this book by a doctor and finally I feel better knowing there is a name for what our child was experiencing. We thought it was odd he never cuddled and did not like to walk on certain textures, etc. As i read this book, I could picture exactly how our child would react to situations and it all clicked. Now he is getting a therapist trained in sensory development.

This book is the must-read for every parent, whether their children suffer from sensory integration or not. It is an eye opening look into the way we interpret our surroundings, and has given me information, tools, and hope for my daughter, who suffers severe developmental delays from this disorder. I would highly reccommend this book!

This book is very easy to read and understand. Once I began reading the introduction I identified a lot of the behaviours with a child in my care. The author has a great pen and a complete understanding of her topic choice. I recommend this book to all who are concerned about a child in their care whose behaviours you don't quite understand.

My child's teacher let me borrow this book after some concerns about some sensory issues he was having. This book clearly lays out senses, their function and better yet examples of normal SI and sensory dysfunction. Although my child is not on the spectrum where he would be considered to have SID, the book provided me with an understanding as to why he seems to be sensory driven in everything he does. With the knowledge from this book, I can now "feed him a better sensory diet" as opposed to continue on with my frustrations. The book also has A TON of resources for those children who may need further evaluations.

I have two children that experiece this disorder and I really enjoy this book. It is very down to earth as well as provides me with the insight and oppertunities to create better communication and life with our children. I would highly recommed it to anyone as alot of individuals are missed in their diagnosis and this could provide some great information.

I had never heard of Sensory Integration Processing Dysfunction (SIPD) and after searching for answers that described my child's problems I was so glad to finally have a "correct" diagnosis plus an explanation that answered why he behaved the way he did. I had been searching for answers and had my child diagnosed with inappropriate diagnosis so I was glad to have an answer. My son is just a couple months shy of 10 years old and it (SIPD) had really done a lot of harm to him (he is out-of-sync) as the title describes and now I can help him.
The book is easy to understand but it is a lot to absorb when you realize how all the different senses can be affected. I would recommend that schools, counselors, etc. get to know more about it. I'm sure that my child isn't the only one out there who has suffered unnecessarily and been considered the behavior problem in class. I was so glad to be able to call the superintendent of the public school system to speak to him about my findings and to let him know that the school needs to be up-to-date on these types of things. I withdrew my child from the school so I could home school him and it's been difficult but now we're starting to recover as we are at the beginning on occupational therapy. What a blessing! Thank God!
