The Frozen Shoulder Workbook: Trigger Point Therapy for Overcoming Pain And Regaining Range of Motion

Powerful Techniques to Relieve Shoulder Pain and Stiffness

Author Clair Davies' own case of frozen shoulder led him to undertake an extensive study of trigger points and referred pain that eventually resulted in his best-selling Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Now this renowned bodywork expert and educator revisits the subject of frozen shoulder, offering the most detailed and comprehensive manual available for this painful and debilitating condition, a useful resource for self-care—with and without a partner—and for bodywork practitioners looking to expand their treatment repertoire.

Frozen shoulder, the syndrome name for several joint and tendon-related symptoms, is experienced as a loss of motion and pain in the shoulder and upper arm. It is most often observed in women between the ages of forty and sixty and individuals with type-two diabetes. Unlike traditional medical treatments for the condition, which rely on painkillers, steroid injections, and physical therapy and often do little to moderate symptoms or speed recovery, trigger point therapy can bring real and lasting relief. This gentle massage technique targets localized areas of tenderness in soft tissue. Put it to work for you to relieve pain, restore range of motion, and shorten recovery times.

A well-written exposition on a difficult subject. —Daniel J. Wallace, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine

In this outstanding book, Clair Davies aptly explains the rational for the trigger point approach based on the teachings of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons to the treatment of frozen shoulder. He presents his hypothesis well. It is time for the medical profession to accept alternative therapies in treating this condition, which does not often respond to routine medical care. —Paul B. Brown, MD, Ph.D., rheumatologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington

Clair Davies has done it again. He has written a wonderful book that provides insight and practical advice for the treatment of a common problem: frozen or stiff shoulder. He shows where the pain is, what the problems are, and how an individual can treat it, sometimes with the help of a partner. His illustrations and directions are clear. His case examples are helpful. This is a very useful book for those who have had rotator cuff injuries or other shoulder problems. —Robert D. Gerwin, MD, president and medical director of Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD, and the Janet G. Travell, MD, Seminar Series

Mr. Davies has done an outstanding job of tackling and simplifying a difficult topic that challenges even experienced clinicians. His review of the functional anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder and the central role of the muscles in the control of the shoulder is a welcome review for physicians and therapists. His simple diagrams and descriptions make this topic understandable to those without formal training as well. Most importantly he shows very concrete ways in which a patient or clinician may effectively treat trigger points, which in my view are the primary cause of shoulder pain and stiffness in the majority of cases. I highly recommend this book to patients with shoulder pain and to clinicians involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with shoulder pain. —Bryan J. O'Neill, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University

From a practical point of view, this is a really exceptional workbook, which could become a best-seller in its field. It is a wonderful overview concerning trigger points, which are the most common cause of frozen shoulder. I can recommend the book to all who are engaged in treating frozen shoulders, including medical doctors, therapists, and patients together with their partners. —Dieter Pongratz, MD, professor in the department of Neurology at the University of Munich Hospital, Friedrich-Baur-Institute, in Munich, Germany

The Frozen Shoulder Workbook is truly a remarkable and comprehensive text that will be indispensable for patients with chronic shoulder pain. Written from a layperson's perspective, it is very readable and well illustrated, but still has plenty of background science and anatomy to satisfy clinicians as well. The book outlines a thorough approach to myofascial pain in the shoulder region and provides multiple treatment strategies to address the clinical variations that are seen. I will highly recommend it to my shoulder pain patients. —Steven R. Shannon, MD, Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD

Clair Davies wrote this guide as a follow-up to the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Although the title suggests a focus on frozen shoulder, it seems that Clair thought it wise to include some of the extra material that didn't fit in his first book. Other readers have noticed the depth of detail and encyclopedic reach of this book. Many have been frustrated by that, expecting to find a simple how-to guide that helps with their painful shoulder problem.

That information is in here. You just have to wade through it. If you give it the time, and practice what you see, the benefits are enormous, profound and far exceed your effort.

Clair Davies was a genius. Both his books are excellent and together they form a body of knowledge more people should be familiar with. More doctors and physiotherapists need to study these books. Both are essential in your home medical library.

As a victim of frozen shoulder, I am familiar with the confusion and concern that accompanies the disease. Most people with frozen shoulder are misdiagnosed at first, told they have tendonitis, bursitis, rotator cuff damage, or impingement, until the shoulder actually freezes up several months into the disease. Then they are poorly advised, instructed about invisible "adhesions", blamed for their problem, told scary stories how they could permanently lose their flexibility, and then tortured with unnecessary stretching or worse, violent medical procedures that tear the shoulder joint to make it loose. Crazy stuff in this day and age. Patient beware.

Scientific and rational advice like the kind Clair Davies laid out here will help you through your pain. So will the faith that your illness will go away as mysteriously as it appeared, without any intervention at all. In most cases, you can simply ride your frozen shoulder out.

Clair Davies was your friend. Buy his books.

I suffer from frozen shoulder and thought this book could help me. I think this book would be good for someone who is a PT or a doctor, but for the everyday person with no medical background no way.The reason I purchased the book was because they made it out to be easy reading, but it is far from that.

I would like to tell you how the Frozen Shoulder Workbook helped me overcome a painful but common illness with no surgery or manipulation under anesthesia. I found relief!
This past spring I fell while carrying a folding chair and bruised my ribs. Due to the rib pain I stopped my daily stretching and swimming. I was also under a lot of stress at work. The rib healed but I began to have arm pain on reaching down. One time when plugging in a power cord I had shooting pains in my shoulder and arm. (ten on a 1 to 10 pain scale) I returned to swimming and found it to be painful so I went to my primary doctor. She said it was bursitis and gave me an anti-inflammation drug and sent we to physical therapy. It got worse and my shoulder froze up. PT was no help and the pain got worse. X-rays showed a normal joint when I went to a shoulder specialist. He said it was bursitis and possible tendonitis. He gave me a cortisone shot in the shoulder and a prescription for a shoulder MRI, if it didn't resolve itself in a week. No relief from the shot and the MRI would have cost me US $195 out of pocket so I looked for an alternate plan. I went to a Chiropractor and I sent off for this book. The Chiropractor told me I should have come to him sooner before the shoulder froze up. I could not lift my arm over my head, work was very difficult and nighttime required sleeping pills and painkillers. My neck muscles on that side where very tight and the scapula (shoulder blade) was not moving. (I learned that the scapula must rotate 30 degrees for the arm to reach over the head completely.) Clair Davies book is excellent, I began using his techniques to massage my tight neck, chest, shoulder, and arm muscles. The first thing to improve was the pain. I found a great massage therapist to help me and the Chiropractor worked to free up the shoulder joint capsule by stretching after 15 minutes of icing the shoulder . The Trigger Point Therapy truly works if you follow this books instruction carefully. Work through chapter 5 and 6, massage with the book open. It is not an easy path but your diligent self-treatment will pay off (there are 24 muscles that help the shoulder move). Stay positive, work on standing up strait and reducing stress. Today I was able to hang from a chin up bar and pain is almost gone. I have resumed swimming and next week I will begin upper body strengthening exercises. One tip not in the book is that I suggest is to rest your shoulder completely one day per week, the following day you will see improved range of motion from the relaxed trigger points. Good Luck!

I live with chronic muscular pain from multiple sclerosis and bad posture from my office job. Often my back, neck and shoulders suffer the brunt of this pain, so much so that I have been debilitated for days at a time. Along with my theracane (which this book includes as part of some of the therapies, but by all means is NOT necessary at all) I can work on myself and eliminate the major pain almost instantly and the minor pains work themselves out usually within a day or two. This book has kept me from missing work and from staying crumpled on my couch curled up in a ball of pain. I LOVE this book. Thank you authors!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! This book turned out to be the answer to my suffering! I started having severe shoulder pain, two weeks ago. I was diagnosed 10 days ago by an M.D. to have shoulder "Impingement" which essentially is the same catch-all diagnosis as "Frozen" shoulder. I am completely disgusted that my Dr. offered really no answers or real help in my situation. After only 10 minutes with this book I instantly recognized my symptoms as matching the authors. I found the pain pattern that matched mine, pressed on the associated TPs, and presto, recreated the referred pain pattern. My wife and I could feel the knots and tight bands in my muscles. After only 30 minutes of massage, I had greatly reduced the pain. I slept soundly for the first time in two weeks! I can't wait to see how I feel after more time. It has only been 12 hours and I am ecstatic with my progress! Don't be thrown off by the title. I'd never heard of Trigger Points and don't think the name fits. Regardless, if you are in shoulder pain, you need this book. I'm not one to try alternative medicine, and despite the non-traditional name, Trigger Points are just a mostly undiscovered body of proven scientific research by two well respected Doctors. The author discovered it through his own shoulder pain experience and has translated Trigger Point Therapy into a form that is specific to the shoulder, neck and arms that can be understood and applied by anyone in the comfort of their own home.

If I could, I'd double these stars. It's hard to believe how many people immediately choose surgery without researching other options. I was one of those at one time in my life. But a few years ago when my shoulder locked and the excruciating pain persisted, I was determined not to have surgery...unless all else failed. After months of physical therapy, my pain was definitely better ("managed") but not gone, and my range of motion was 50% better but not 100% better. Good enough, I thought. A year after I stopped PT, I re-injured the shoulder because of heavy lifting and was back to square one. That was when I searched online and found Clare Davies' Triggerpoint Therapy Workbook (the shoulder version is apparently specific to that type of injury... the book I found covered all areas). I'm not saying the method was a snap because it took time to read and understand the concepts, and it took patience to find the trigger points. Working them was painful but, ironically, in a good way because you know something healing is going on. Despite those challenges, within three weeks, my pain was gone and my range of motion was back to normal. On occasion, if I feel the slightest pain anywhere due to stress on my joints, I pull the book out and work the suggested areas. I'm very grateful to Mr. Davies for dedicating himself to finding a nonsurgical means of helping the body, and I gladly take the time out to share my own trigger point experience with others. I have since recommended the method to friends who have also avoided surgery. One was my boyfriend who had injured his back doing yoga. Another was a friend who had a knee injury from playing football in high school decades ago. He complained constantly about the pain and was afraid of looming surgery. I suggested he try trigger point therapy, but he swatted the air at the idea. One day over the phone, he was back on his knee rant. I told him unless he tried the therapy then and there, I didn't want to hear another word. I got the book, had him work just two recommended areas. Before we got off the phone, he sheepishly admitted the pain was almost gone.

This book is wonderful. It has enabled me to resume my life without pain. I have recomended it to several friends and relatives so they can treat themselves. I only wish I had found it years ago. Prior to treating my self with the information contained in this little gem, I was constantly awakened by shoulder pain in the middle of the night, was afraid to drive because just reaching for the steering wheel caused so much pain and turning it was out of the question. Now I can even shower and lead a normal life. I highly recoommend it to anyone in pain, even if doctors have not helped.

Wonderful book! It is very detailed. Everybody with frozen shoulder should be given the chance of trying this method; it helped me heal my frozen shoulder. The explanations on how to locate your problem muscles, and how to treat them, are incredibly accurate. When you have had months and months of pain, and you go to doctors and physical therapy and the results are so slow that you start believing you are never going to heal, this book shows a way to find relief, to get well, and then treat yourself whenever pains pop up (like maintenance). I am not saying that doctors and physical therapy didn't do anything to help, but it was the methods described in this book what finally gave me back my mobility and took away the pain. I continue using it every time I have contracted or sore muscles. I recommend it all the time to people I think could be helped with these methods. I actually have had several people buy it.The Frozen Shoulder Workbook: Trigger Point Therapy for Overcoming Pain & Regaining Range of Motion

I bought this book to help me treat my frozen shoulder. While the book probably offers some useful information, there's TOO MUCH OF IT. I had tried everything to relieve my impossible shoulder pain. The trigger point method must be tried to be appreciated. When it came to the point where regular massage was making me worse instead of better, I went looking for an answer. A friend suggested the trigger point method becuase she got relief from a lifelong problem with her neck. I purchased both books in the hope I could relieve enough pain to be able to have mobility again. This book gave me all the information I needed to help myself feel a whole lot better...as well as compliment my other therapies.I would definately recommend it to anyone who has been unable to deal with muscular pain in a meaningful effective way. Try it, it works.

I highly recommend it to ANYONE - especially those suffering from this condition, their friends, family or caretakers.

Having had a frozen shoulder several years ago and successfully using the treatments described in this book, my shoulder was 100% within 2 months with no recurring issues. I fortunately was treated by the author's daughter Amber Davies and followed the principles from the author's first book, The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Having read this book as well, it is an excellent resource for anyone with shoulder problems and focuses on shoulder related issues. The author has given anyone the ability to self-treat shoulder issues related to trigger points and keep the shoulder healthy by also covering preventative maintenance methods and therapies.

This techniques are so different than what Physical Therapy teaches.Yet they work! I have used the principles taught in this book to my own convenience at home and on the road.Without the major pain of Doctor or Therapy visits. So far I have at least 70 percent of the mobility back in my arm and shoulder.A frozen shoulder is not a joyful thing to have. Its very painful and was keeping me from all sports. Its been about 7-8 weeks now.The problem is that I only use these techniques once every other day.I would probably be cured if I applied them 2-3 times a day.And my arm was terrible.I could not lift my arm but waist high. And man was it painful! But this book has allowed me to moan and groan at home and to go at my own pace. Its saved me a lot of time it would have taken to run to therapy 3 times a week.Ands its saved me money.Gas,co-payments,etc.Buy this book! You won't regret it! Its been a blessing to me!

(Hide Review...)  What's up with this book?

This book is supposedly for the person with frozen shoulder and aims to treat this condition with trigger point therapy. Problem is, the book wrongly believes that frozen shoulder is ill defined by the medical community and that the real culprit is muscular in nature. I really don't know how the book came up with these assumptions, but they are both dead wrong.

If you don't know how to search the medical literature, just go on the internet and look up any site for the layman, perhaps the Mayo Clinic website on frozen shoulder. A quick search will reveal that there is no confusion- frozen shoulder is a problem with the shoulder capsule around the shoulder joint- it has become contracted, tight and fibrotic. More advanced researchers will find that there are many published medical studies documenting that people with frozen shoulder do indeed have fibrotic changes in their shoulder capsules- objectively confirmed by arthrography and actual tissue biopsies. Furthermore, Neviasier has described an arthroscopic four-stage classification for the frozen shoulder and Hannafin et al have described a correlation between the arthroscopic stage, the clinical examination, and the histological appearnce of the tissues. Evidence shows a synovial inflammation with subsequent reactive capsular fibrosis and a dense matrix of type I and II collagen laid down by fibroblasts and myofibroblasts in the joint capsule. Subsequently, the shoulder tissue contracts.

The only logical conclusion, therefore, is that if one has frozen shoulder and the problem is a tight shoulder capsule, how the heck is rubbing the muscles, as the book suggests, really going to help? By the way, I could find no mention of the above published info in the book, meaning that the book either overlooked this info or didn't know about it. Either way is bad, because the poor non-medical reader suffering with frozen shoulder is in the dark about this info.

I found this all quite irritating, but even more irritating to me, was the very unprofessional bashing of physical therapists which is devoted to no less than an entire chapter, Chapter 9. What the book has against physical therapists and why the book wastes the reader's time discussing the ineffectiveness of physical therapy is beyond me- and I don't care. Furthermore, a discussion of why physical therapists have supposedly missed the boat on treating frozen shoulder isn't really going to help my shoulder get better any quicker either. But then again, this all comes from a book that doesn't seem to have many of it's facts straight.

Expect this book to treat a general shoulder problem with a very narrow scope of treatment- massage.

As a massage therapist I see many clients whom "conventional" medicine has failed, who were tired of taking pain medication. Myofascial pain can be seem mysterious and there is a very high rate of misdiagnoses. For anyone who has suffered from shoulder pain the often contradictory information out there about prognosis and treatment can be bewildering. I tell my clients that they must become their own advocates, learning as much about their anatomy as possible and becoming experts on specialized areas of medicine that their doctors might not have time to research thoroughly. This is easier said than done, however, as most of us don't have the time or resources to find and sift through available studies and alternatives.

That's what makes this book so great. It delivers a succinct explanation of the anatomy in question along with effective techniques that can be easily applied easily at home. (By the way don't confuse this with other treatments...Trigger Point Therapy is not "Pressure Point Therapy." Trigger Point Therapy is a scientifically rigorous paradigm.)

In my practice I use Trigger Point Therapy to alleviate chronic pain of all kinds and have used it often to assist in the rehabilitation of `frozen shoulder.' I used to spend many unpaid hours drawing little sketches describing some of these techniques so that my clients could help themselves between their visits to me. Now I can simply refer them to this thorough and effective book which has many techniques I didn't know of myself.
It is a fantastic resource and I recommend it to anyone suffering shoulder pain (you'll give it two thumbs way because you'll have your range of motion back)as well as to Massage Therapists, and Physical Therapists and, of course, Doctors.

It is a widely known medical fact that frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where the joint capsule (the tissue around the actual ball and socket shoulder joint) has become fibrotic- just look it up on the internet. Having undergone this fibrosis, the capsule is thickened and thus shoulder motion becomes limited. It is a self-limiting condition, according to the many natural history studies that follow people with this condition for years, which means that the shoulder capsule gradually returns to normal over time.

It is clearly not a "tendon-related symptom" as the book's description suggests. I fail to see how "trigger point therapy can bring real and lasting relief" as trigger point therapy treats the muscles- not the main problem which is a fibrotic joint capsule.

There is no way that you can treat the muscles and cure frozen shoulder. If you treat any shoulder with trigger point therapy and it gets better, then you did NOT have frozen shoulder. Furthermore, anyone can do a simple Medline search (the largest electronic medical database in the world) and you will find no studies showing that trigger point therapy is effective for treating frozen shoulder. For that matter, no study has ever shown LONG-term relief of pain from trigger point therapy for ANY musculoskeletal condition.

On the other hand, maybe the book is just calling frozen shoulder a person with a loss of motion and pain in the shoulder and upper arm. Well, this is not the case because the book says that frozen shoulder is "most often observed in women between the ages of forty and sixty and individuals with type-two diabetes"- which is a medically true statement of people that have adhesive capsulitis. You know, between the title, the front cover, and the back cover, I sense a flip-flopping between what exactly it is defining as frozen shoulder- which makes me wonder who exactly the book is for and what condition its suppose to treat?

Just one more reason why lay-people have no business writing about medical treatments- it justs clutters things up and delays people from getting the appropriate treatment for their condition.
