| The China Study : The Most Compreshensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

I have read dozens of nutrition and health books, and (as so many other reviewers have said) this book changed my life more than any other. It demonstrates convincing and credible research that animal protein triggers cancer (and a host of other diseases we already knew about). After reading this book twice, I bought a bunch of vegetarian cookbooks and stopped eating meat (no small feat for me). I'm still working on the dairy, but my goal is to go 95% vegan. And, as a happy byproduct, I've lost 10 pounds in two months -- without trying at all.

This book is loaded with factual info about health and diet. I'm so impressed with the science, I just couldn't argue and now follow a plant based diet. The evidence is so clear that rationality helped me make the switch to a much, much healthier diet. Here's to a long and healthy life! And to boot, a plant based diet is much healthier for our planet, also.

I am a man of 70 years and in excellent health. I'm 5' 10" and weigh 150 pounds. I can still jog 5 miles and not feel tired or short of breath - even after two hours at the gym. My lab test results would suggest that I am a young man.
This is NOT genetic good fortune: My mother died of a heart attack at age 58. Heart disease and mental illness runs in the family on my mother's side. Alzheimer's disease and cancer runs in my family on my father's side. Fortunately for me, I was raised in Los Angeles foster care until I emancipated myself at age 15. In foster care, I hardly ever was fed meat or fish. On my own, I simply had better eating hab8ts than most Americans For example, I don't eat butter or margarine. I hardly ever eat in a restaurant. I prepare my own meals that are fairly lite on animal portions and heavy on vegetables, whole grains, and fruit. I drink skim milk and rarely drink anything with added sugar or caffeine in it. The last couple years I have been getting positive reinforcement for my eating habits from several books, written by physicians and PhD's. But after reading "The China Study" I find I can still improve my eating habits. I eat more added fats and more protein than I should, and I could make some better food choices. "The China Study" not only SEEMS sensible, it is well documented. Every assertion is backed up using scientifically valid research methods, and every chapter has a long list of references near the back of the book - just before the index. And the reader doesn't have to have a college education to understand the contents. Of all the health improvement books I have ever read, this one is the best. It is more scientific, better documented, and broader in scope than any of the others - although most of the others were helpful. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-29 01:02:50 EST)

This book is critical for anyone studying nutrition. Why China? Because of "such a massive variation in cancer rates among different counties when genetic backgrounds were similar from place to place" (p. 71). Quite simply, it leaves no doubt that genetics aren't involved, but rather environment. Though I have read hundreds of books on nutrition, I was blown away by the research herein. I had already known dairy was bad, but Campbell's research makes it practically the major culprit for cancer! Apparently the casein, the main protein in cow's milk, "interacts with carcinogens, the way DNA reacts with carcinogens and the way cancerous cells grow" (p. 65) and actually "allows more carcinogens into cells" (p. 348). Milk does a tumor good! Although I still occasionally indulge in raw goat's cheese, I am much more conscious of this fact after reading his book. While other researchers have implicated carbohydrates in cancer (especially high glycemic ones), Dr. Campbell devotes an entire chapter to blaming a diet too high in protein. He found that a diet 5% in protein could reverse cancer, and implicated a diet high in animal proteins as being especially carcinogenic. He recommends getting no more than 10% of your calories in protein, which is low by USA standards. A vegetarian diet was found to be superior in forming muscle over the long run ("slow and steady wins the race") as well as in allowing people to consume many more calories than omnivores, without getting fat. Campbell also takes on big pharma and the food industries, leaving no doubt that their recommendations to us are purely for their profit. My editor e-mailed Dr. Campbell to inquire as to whether any of the animal proteins eaten in the study were raw. Apparently not, he replied. It might have made a difference in the meat (since cooked meat forms carcinogenic heterocyclic amines if heated enough), but honestly: even raw dairy contains casein! Excellent book! This book will challenge modern day thinking on food and pharmaceuticals. Campbell is an educated researcher who astonishingly comes to the realization that modern concepts of a healthy diet are actually not based on fact and research. Our love affair with meat and dairy have some significant implications for our overall health. Well written, well researched. It is worth having in your personal library.

This book offers a lot of good information. I thought it was interesting to read about so much good information about eating plant-based foods. However, the book is very long and drawn out, and a lot of it is written in a very dry manner. I think it could have been tightened more, dropping probably 75 pages or so since so much of the information repeats itself. A shorter more focused read would have made it go down easier. I still think the info and mission are good, I just think it would have been a smoother read had it been shorter, less repetitive and written in a little more interesting manner, rather than cut and dry science writing. Good info though...

I am so thankful that this book fell into my hands. As someone who loves learning about nutrition, I realize now that I have been assuming that the information we receive from the media is true and in our best interests. I find that when I try to talk to people about Dr. Campbell's alternative view to nutrition, they become highly defensive, even angry. We don't want to hear that what we have been taught for so long could possibly be wrong! Here in northern Europe, where we consume lots of dairy and meat products, we are increasingly suffering from cancers and heart disease. Many consider the Scandinavians to be the epitome of health, but I think this can only be credited to our highly active lifestyles.
If you dare to have an open mind to this book and use your own common sense, I think you will gain a fascinating perspective even if you choose not to make the changes recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-04 01:18:05 EST)

I've read a ton of books on nutrition, diets, healthy lifestyle, etc. This one takes the cake as the best. I found Campbell's scientific approach to be the best researched with the most evidence backing it. He's not an Atkins trying to sell his particular brand of diet or supplements, he's simply showing you what his research has found over the years. My favorite diet book before this was the Paleo Diet, but I think they far overestimate the amount of animal protein that our ancestors ate. Animal protein isn't the end of the world, but it shouldn't be any more than 5-10% of your total intake.
This also doesn't mean you can go out and start eating all the french fries and pasta you can find. Dr. Campbell advocates a simple diet: whole foods, plant-based. That's it. You can sum the entire book into that for dietary recommendation. The implications for diet on cancer, heart disease, and many autoimmune disorders is shocking as well. Campbell basically shows that diets high in animal protein lead to these "diseases of affluence." And the dairy industry's indoctrination of the school program is terrifying as well, especially since it's so obvious now that milk in fact does NOT do a body good and in fact will give you all sorts of bad things including cancer. I very much want to go back to my middle school, pick up the crates of free milk, and toss them into the Potomac ala the Boston Tea Party. The Potomac Milk Party! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I ordered 15 copies for my office so other coworkers could read it and since then I've also ordered another half dozen for my friends. I've even put up a standing offer to any of my friends that I will order them a copy of the book if they are interested and will read it. Many of them have taken me up on it so far. :-) You don't have to die of heart disease, Americans. You don't have to die of cancer either. I only wish I knew how important nutrition was a decade ago when my own mother was dying of cancer. We just didn't know back then (and the internet wasn't around!). But if you know someone who's had a heart attack or is suffering through cancer, there is another way out: your body's own defense mechanisms will heal, it just requires the proper fuel. The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health
This book is well written. The author has taken information from the past 30 plus years of nutrition research and translated it into terms that the average person can understand. After reading this book, my family is radically changing its eating habits to follow Dr. Campbell's suggestions. I will definately be sharing this book with friends and family. Very informative book based on broad, long-term scientific studies about diet and health. Eye-opening results fly in the face of conventional, money-driven ideas about what a healthy diet includes. Diseases of civilization (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, etc.) are shown to result from dietary choices, and can be reversed by improving diet. Guidelines for health steer towards vegetarianism, with clear foundation from the numerous studies cited earlier. Problems with "scientific" method because of money and peer pressure, giving out false conclusions and distorted facts to public, related.
This book helped me firm up my desire to eat more plant foods (fruits, vegetables, etc.) in their most unrefined (raw) state. Not only can I avoid disease and improve my own health, but I am passing on this information (book) to my own adult children so that they can make more informed nutritional choices for themselves and their children. The impact of this book literally changed my life, my family's life and hopefully many others I am able to pass this information along to. As a health care provider, an avid reader and someone who used to think I was making great choices, I now have a much deeper understanding of nutritional value and the true impact diet has on our entire well being. The author has compiled and heavily contributed to one of the most comprehensive all-encompassing, indisputable realm of facts on the "foods" we eat that I have seen to date. Don't think you've already heard it! This is NOT a "diet" book! This is a book of truths and if you have any interest what so ever in living healthy, long and happy and seeing those around you experience the same, then read this book! I started making changes in my eating habits at the first chapter and just a few weeks later, I can't tell you how much better I feel, mentally and physically. Let the China Study show you the repeated scientific evidence of HOW, WHAT and WHY the foods you eat do what they do to/for the human body, then make your own choices! Don't let genetics and/or commonality of diease process, i.e., heart disease, diabetes, cancers, etc. lead you to believe this is simply your hand in life! You truly need to have this knowledge to understand that you can have control over your health and happiness. Blessings in Great Health!

In the beginning of the book it appears that Campbell is going to give specific scientific findings of a study done in China that would confirm the connection of animal protein diet with cancer. He starts with studies of rodents that showed 100% statistical connection. It was expected that the same type of information would ensue, but it didn't.
As the above review by Joseph DeMarinis "Truth in science" so decidedly outlines, Campbell goes mostly into broad statements taken from the dogma of vegetarianism. I got this book after taking the caregivers course at the Gerson Institute in San Diego where Dr. Max Gerson proved that a 100% vegetarian diet with juicing and techniques to pull out toxins cures cancer-- even advanced cancer after conventional medical techniques have failed. The Gerson diet stops tumor growth and completely invigorates the immune system to curing many other twentieth century diseases. It follows that a diet mostly of vegetables and fruits would be beneficial for preventing disease. This book did not come close to my expectations and is not recommended. One final point for the readers of this concerns the insistance that a 100% vegan diet cures heart disease. In the book by Internationally acclaimed Cardiologist, Dr. Sodi Pallares, "My Hearts Health", Dr. Pallares states that after he observed thousands of patients on his vegetable and fruit diet that he found they did better with some good fats (2 tbls per day) and some protein. He lived to age 90 on that diet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-05 00:34:00 EST)

A friend of mine recommended this book and I can't thank him enough! I have read it cover to cover and so has my husband. We bought 5 copies and have been lending them to friends to read.
My husband and I had already been vegetarians and we knew all the health benefits of this lifestyle. The information confirmed all of our reasons and also convinced us to cut out dairy as well. The book is well organized and written in a way that can be easily understood. The research is well documented and the graphs and charts are very detailed and informative. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in their health to read this book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-15 01:14:33 EST)

I am a Asian-American (Japanese specifically), I was born and raised in Hawaii and moved to the California when I was 27 years old. I grew up eating meat and enjoyed that until a few months ago. I have always had high cholesterol (in the 220-240 range) and I thought it was genetic. I was into the low-carb, higher protein diet the last few years, probably because it justified eating a lot of meat, which I loved. A few months ago I had some blood work done and I had a total cholesterol of 259, worse a LDL "bad" cholesterol of 164. About this time a friend at work recommended this book, I ordered it and read it. Took everything with a grain of salt but remembered some studies in the 1970s that he referred to about Japanese Americans in Hawaii and California having typical health issues that their Japanese counterparts did not. I gave up most of the red meat and dairy for about three months, ate mostly a vegan diet with some poultry and a little more fish, mostly sushi. After only three months my recent results were total cholesterol of 190, LDL of 104, my doctor went from very concerned and recommending cholesterol reducing drugs to unconcerned. It may not be for everyone but I am convinced that this may have prolonged my life to enjoy with my young children.

This book has two themes: Food choices can create a healthier body, and there's a bunch of folks that have vested interest in keeping us from knowing this truth.
It is evident that man has survived by being a scavenger, but this study suggests that some diets are better at promoting a healthy body beyond mere survival. If you need more verification of the health benefits of a plant-based diet beyond this study, look at the world-class athletes that are vegetarian. How do you suppose they build muscle, bone, excellent health, and win at their sport? While the study helped verify what many have proven by using their own bodies as laboratory, the inside information about the food/drug cartels and their government enablers is an important bonus. We are never going to have good health in this country as long as these folks reign supreme with their vested interest of promoting their view of health information, and healthcare is seen as a commodity. The book exposes the dumbing down of our people with the misinformation of the powerful that undermines the quality of our health and lives. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-15 01:14:33 EST)

Does not have a brain. The credentials of the person who wrote this Anti-China Study article has a BS degree in History. I am a big proponent of consuming a phytonutrient dense diet and organic, unprocessed foods whenever possible but it is important to realize that the author is an ardent activist with PETA and is more concerned about promoting his vegan political cause than the actual facts. If you want to see the "rest of the story" that was conveniently left out of this book I strongly suggest loking at the information here, http://www.westonaprice.org/bookreviews/chinastudy.html.

I purchased this and Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn - two books closely related / companions in my opinion. They even talk about each other. Some of this book is a little in-depth for the person who is not interested in scientific studies, but the authors do a pretty good job of putting it all in plain english. This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn about how nutrition relates to food and disease. It is also a great book for learning about the shortfalls of the medical system in America and the politics behind medicine and the food industries. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED reading for anyone who wishes to be in-the-know.
I also appreciate the viewpoint of food and thousands of chemicals in food interacting together to produce good or bad health, as opposed to many other books and studies which take a more isolated approach, such as studying vitamin C and only vitamin C, for example, This book takes a more wholistic approach - meaning that the entire food must be considered in how all things interact, and not just one single element of nutrition alone. This book was recommended to me by a friend. It took me a while to get the book...and a few months before I got to it. Once I started reading it, I was on fire...and telling anyone who would listen. Every human being should be able to read this book. Dr. Campbell lays out the research in understandable terms...and it is shocking to read. It proves to me that we must be in charge of our own health...and that means eating healthy...and vegetarian. This information can truly save lives.

Very well presented research that matches what I've seen traveling around the world. It also matches what I see with immigrant families and the changes that occur when some adopt the american diet. The western diet needs to change. After reading this book, it was very easy to give up my animal-based diet. Of course, eating out is a challenge, but I'm learning. :-) I'm losing weight and feeling great.

Barry Sears' books are based on these same principles and they are very accessible and written (except for one) for the lay person. If you really want to get into the science behind the nutritional advice, read his book: Enter the Zone, A Dietary Road Map to Lose Weight Permanently, Reset Your Genetic Code, Prevent Disease, Achieve Masximum Physical Performance and Enhance Mental Productivity. The easy reads are the shorter titles such as A Week in the Zone. You don't need to slog through a 400+ page book.

Wow, how refreshing to find an author who is a genuine authority, who supports his conclusions with fact and who lacks the bias that drives many writers on this subject to deceive and mislead, most doctors to remain ignorant of and uninterested in the relationship between health and nutrition and most of the food industry and medical profession too busy making money to care. This book deals with science, not politics. I read it five weeks ago and was so motivated by it I altered my diet to whole foods only. My blood pressure has improved from borderline hypertensive to 106/67 and I feel trimmer and fitter already. I've purchased the book for my children so they have some basis for questioning conventional advice on this important subject.

The China Study is a large survey of health and nutrition habits that the author concludes support a vegan diet. The book discusses the China Study and the author's conclusions. The Study used surveys from 6,500 adults in China and Taiwan to analyze over 350 variables relating health and nutrition. The China Study looked specifically at the relationship between diet and disease in over 100 villages all over China. It compared the rates of disease and how they differed between regions and looked for dietary habits that could account for those differences. The author uses the data on what he sees as nutrition's impact on disease and concludes that a vegan diet promotes good health and longevity.
A strong emphasis of the book is the way research on nutrition is conducted - he calls it "scientific reductionism". His complaint is that particular nutrients or food groups are isolated to determine their effects and all other influences are ruled out. Even though this is how research is done, and Dr. Campbell specifically looks at the impact of nutrition on health, he does not think we can accurately study single nutrients. In fact, he does not think information on nutrition is accurately obtained, reported, and utilized in the West. He also thinks the western diet is terrible including many of the popular diets such as the Atkins diet or any diet that emphasizes animal products. The book provides recommendations for changing your eating habits, and suggests that poor health and diseases can be reversed or improved by changing your diet. If you are a proponent of veganism, you will certainly enjoy the book and learn from it. If you are on the fence about veganism, it may sway you. If you would not appreciate eating a vegan diet, you may take offense at the author's criticism of non-vegan eating. Regardless of your perspective, you will appreciate the substantial amount of work that was put into this book. The passion and conviction of the author come through as this book is clearly designed to help others. The book's contents include: Introduction Part I: The China Study: 1. Problems We Face, Solutions We Need; 2. A House of Proteins; 3. Tuning Off Cancer; 4. Lessons from China. Part II: Diseases of Affluence: 5. Broken Hearts; 6. Obesity; 7. Diabetes; 8. Common Cancers: Breast, Prostate, Large Bowel (Colon, Rectal); 9. Autoimmune Diseases; 10. Wide-Ranging Effects: Bone, Kidney, Eye and Brain Diseases; Part III: The Good Nutrition Guide; 11. Eating Right: Eight Principles of Food and Health; 12. How to Eat. Part IV: Why Haven't You Heard This Before? 13. Science--The Dark Side; 14. Scientific Reductionism; 15. The "Science" of Industry; 16. Government: Is It for the People? 17. Big Medicine: Whose Health Are They Protecting? 18. Repeating Histories. Appendix A. Q&A: Protein Effect in Experimental Rat Studies. Appendix B. Experimental Design of the China Study. Appendix C. The "Vitamin" D Connection. References. Index. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams and The 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-25 01:14:50 EST)

This book is one of these books that each page makes your jaw drop. Despite overwhelming evidence, it is amazing that this has not taken a bigger stage with the public. I guess we love our high animal protein diets too much. For those of you who have health problems, take heed to the words inside this book.

Before I review the book, a little history of me here:
When I was a chubby girl in college I tried many kinds of diet to lose weight, and one of them was a "healthier" form of Atkins diet, called the South Beach diet. I read from a Women's Health magazine that it's effective and nutritious. At the time, I did not have any knowledge of nutrition, and unfortunately I had followed the diet thinking that it's healthy. Of course, I gained weight soon after unable to keeping up with the diet and failed miserably. I was sick all the time also and didn't know why. I had many health problems and was on a variety of different prescription drugs that my doctor urged me to take. Many years later, I decided to become a pure vegetarian not only because of health but because of realization of my diet's impact on the environment and animal welfare, thanks to several documentaries called Baraka & Earthlings. When I became a vegetarian I lost weight almost effortlessly, and as I gradually dropped dairy and egg products from my diet I lost even more weight - the weight that I had worked so hard to lose but failed to as a non-vegetarian! I am now healthier than ever, never get sick, and feel so much better overall, all without depending on unnecessary drugs and doctor visits. Even so, after I read this important book - the largest research conducted on correlation between nutrition and health - I was extremely shocked at this fascinating study. Now, I cannot stop talking about the book with everyone that I care about. Everyone who is interested in their health effects of consuming animal products should read this very important book. According to the study, cancer, heart diseases, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol - all of these modern diseases can be prevented and even reversed by whole food, plant-based diet! I am now a firm believer of this, as I watched my family members suffer greatly (i.e. cancer, osteoporosis, etc.) due to their animal-based diets. Everything became so clear to me. Now, my whole family follow a more plant-based diet than ever. My sister, my boyfriend, and even my mom - follow a vegetarian diet and have improved their health greatly. Everything makes sense to me. There are so much misinformation out there regarding diet and health, that public can be easily confused about what and how one should eat, like I was. As a vegan who was once a heavy meat-eater, I hope more people can realize the truth and obtain better health, as well as helping to restore our environment, and end unnecessary suffering of animals. This book is a refreshing change from the glut of fad diet books. It is very readable, yet takes a serious and scientific look at what we eat and the resulting health problems. The core of the book is about a 20 year study, in China, sponsored by NIH and the governement of China. Be prepared to have a paradigm shift in your concepts of healthy eating.

I just completed The China Study and I feel it was a very interesting, informative read. It's kind of a scientific thriller as in what else will our good scientist T. Colin Campbell reveal?
The end of the book was the most interesting to me...how the establishment ignores easy, inexpensive ways to heal disease thru diet, how doctors who espouse nutritional therapy are rejected and how industry and government are intertwined and, as a result, the public is left ignorant on how they can easily and simply heal themselves. One thing to think about: I am sure many who read this book want nationalized health care. I am not sure that would be a good thing at the moment with a government that is unable to give us the information we need right NOW. It is addicted to costly procedures and drugs making everything more complex, painful and expensive. In fact, people are DYING from our conventional medicare...one of the biggest killers of Americans. Do we really want to hand over the reigns of our healthcare (and money) to a government that is unable to act in our own self-interest? If we did, our money would be wasted in furthering the pharmaceutical and medical industries at the expense of our health. I don't think it's a good idea unless it can be cleaned up and the motives clean. I'd rather give my healthcare dollars to people and institutions that espouse the truth...something the government is incapable of. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-30 00:46:02 EST)

I am a practicing optometrist in O'Fallon missouri and I work with alot of patients of all different classes. Many of them are way overweight and in poor health at an early age (50's-60's and I just know that the reason is because of poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The China Study really helps to emphasize the importance of good everyday eating and what the consequenses will be if one does not follow a good everyday diet. I'm lucky enough to enjoy good health everyday and I hope I can pass on to my patients information about this book to make a better world.

This is a well written, easy to understand book, full of information that i believe everyone should have been taught as children. I think schools should incorporate this way of eating for our children. I am definatly changing my views and habits.
shocking and scary what we didnt know all these years. It makes you think about what if : what if we all started eating this way long ago, how many people would not be so sick now? (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-25 12:27:16 EST)
