The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know

Thanks to sharper diagnosis and better medicine, the future is brighter for people with bipolar disorder than in past generations. But if you or someone you love is struggling with the frantic highs and crushing lows of this illness, there are still many hurdles to surmount at home, at work, and in daily life.

*How can you learn to distinguish between the early warning signs of mood swings and the normal ups and downs of life?
*What medications are available, and what are their side effects?
*What should you do when you find yourself escalating into mania or descending into depression?
*How can you get the help and support you need from family members and friends?
*How can you tell your coworkers about your illness without endangering your career?

In this comprehensive guide, Dr. David J. Miklowitz offers straight talk that can help you tackle these and related questions, take charge of your illness, and reclaim your life. A leading researcher and clinical specialist who knows what works, Dr. Miklowitz supplies proven tools to help you achieve balance--and free yourself from the emotional and financial havoc that result when symptoms rule your life--without sacrificing your right to rich and varied emotional experiences.

This essential resource will help you and your family members come to terms with the diagnosis, recognize early warning signs of manic or depressive episodes, cope with triggers of mood swings, resolve medication problems, and learn to collaborate effectively with doctors and therapists. You'll learn specific ways to ask for support and help from your family and friends--and what to do when their "caring" feels like "controlling." For times when the going gets tough, a wealth of examples of how others have dealt with similar challenges offer new perspectives and new solutions.

Whether you have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, are considering seeking help for the first time, or have been in treatment for years, this empowering book is designed to help put you--not your illness--back in charge of your life.

I've read about seven of these Bipolar books so far, (Don't look at me like that, it's part of my job). I'd say this one might be the best of the bipolar books so far. But as always I also need to recommend that you also read Tao Cycle Therapy, by Sarah Shikitao-Brown when your finished and are ready for a practical solution. -Jane Stevens

I gave this book as a gift to a good friend with bipolar disorder. Her comment to me was "I wish I had this when I was first diagnosed (about 15 years ago)!" She has passed it along to another family whose son was recently diagnosed. Says this is an excellent and easy-to-understand resource for families and was most grateful for the gift.

This book proved to be easy to read and informative. I would recommend it for anyone who is, or thinks they might be, bipolar. Also, it is good to read if you for sure think you are NOT bipolar, but others think you are. It will help you gain some perspective. This is also a helpful book for family and close friends of those who suffer from manic depression.

After having been misdiagnosed most of my entire adult life, and after having checked myself into a psychiatric ward due to suicidal thoughts, I was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Following my hospitalization, I craved to know more about the disorder and how myself and my family could deal with the ups and downs of it. This book was just what I was looking for!! I have a medical/clinical background, and I was surprised to find that the author really only had one chapter on medications that the average reader might find a little dry. The entire book is highly informative, which makes it so easy for me to recommend to my family to read as a way of not only understanding bipolar disorder, but how they can help me when I'm not able to help myself. The practical tools for mood charting and how to rate my moods have been an invaluable asset to both me and my psychologist. If you or a family member have bipolar disorder, this is the one book to have. I can't thank Dr. Miklowitz enough for such a great book!!

I started reading this book when I was in the psych ward of a hospital after a "bipolar meltdown". I'd been having trouble coming to grips with this diagnosis, and I needed information. This book is laid out wonderfully, and describes all the criteria psychiatrists use to make a diagnosis. It all is interspersed with first hand accounts of people describing their lives with bipolar disorder. A large portion of the book is given to ways to manage your life. Charts to monitor moods and lots of assessment tools. Very helpful.

It caused me some difficulty because I didn't quite fit into any category or description. I guess I have a mixed state, never staying the same for a whole day. Many of my more frustrating symptoms, such as pacing, were not listed anywhere. My doctor tells me I am just a bit unusual, and maybe that is the problem.Nothing is going to quite give me the info I need.

This book is wonderful for those needing to know the parameters and describtions of this disorder. I recommend it.

This book is an excellent resource for both survivors of bipolar disorders (I am one) and their supporters. It is packed with easy to understand and applicable information. I especially liked the idea of self-management of one's own bipolar disorder presented in the book. Much too often, books on the disorder promote too much dependence on others to help us manage our disorder. Miklowitz gives a realistic picture of bipolar disorder and uses case studies to illustrate his points. I especially liked that he took on one of the most frequently asked questions of all: "Is it an illness or is it me?" (p.54). Great resource for every bipolar survivor and their supporters.

My counselor recommended this book to me after years of having the diagnosis. I found out more about the disease from this book in the 10 years before from my doctors. This book has great information on recognizing mood swings, medication, lifestyle suggestions and more. I enjoyed the case studies of real people who suffer from the same disease and felt calmed and like I was not "the only one". The author takes away some of the fear of "being discovered" with a mental illness and I like how he confronts the disease with knowledge and compassion. With this illness now a "catch-all" disease for the media, I didn't feel quite like a freak after I read this book. I am definitely going to pass this book on to my husband and my family and I hope they come away from the experience the way that I did - with hope.

A well written book by a great doctor who personally treated my sister and assisted our family through a rough time. Thorough and helpful for the patient and their family. A must have for any family who has had to deal with this disorder. Being informed is the key to resolving issues and this book touches upon every aspect of bi-polar disorder. Having been though an episode with my sister, I personally know that having this guide would have been so helpful. So many people will want to give you their advice and opinions- just refer to this book to get the real scoop and you will be so much more grounded.

This book is packed with very helpful information for both the person with the disorder and the family members. Excellent coverage of not only what bipolar is, but the what bipolar looks like to you, your doctor and your family is wonderful. I know people thought I was just being extravagant, but now, reading this, they know I couldn't stop myself, and that at the time, it made perfect sense to me.
Insightful and in plain English for those of us without medical degrees, this book has helped both me and my family in numerous ways. I hope everyone with bipolar disorder gets their hands on a copy and studies it with family and friends, it truly is a great resource.

Not the best bipolar book out there. You need the most current information. Taming Bipolar, by Psychology Today was more resourceful.

Also, Why Am I Still Depressed? Recognizing and Managing the Ups and Downs of Bipolar II and Soft Bipolar Disorder is absolutely wonderful for understanding Mood Spectrum Disorders.

I give this book three stars instead of four based on MY need at the time that I purchased the book. I am bipolar, and have recently had a breakthrough episode. After years of pretending that I didn't have bipolar disorder it came as a shock to me and to my husband that it hadn't just "gone away". (I kid a bit, but you get the point.)
Anyhow, I purchased this book for myself, but mainly for him. I wanted a book that would give him something to hang on to. Something for him to chew on. A few techniques or ideas on how to deal, tolerate, help, accept someone, such as a spouse, who is suffering currently from bipolar disorder.
The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide was my top choice because of the high ratings, and because my very top choice was not available at the book store.
I read through The Survival Guide. It FELT a bit outdated to me.

-There were several newer drugs that were not mentioned in the book, which didn't help me so much because I'm currently taking new-ER medications.
-I didn't FEEL that there was enough talk about the family system, or how bipolar can effect families, marriages, etc.

Like I've said over and over, for ME it didn't FEEL like the book that I was ready to chuck at each and every person who is bipolar or who is living with someone who is bipolar.
I will tell you that I then purchased Loving Someone With Bipolar Disorder by Julie Fast and John Preston. My husband is greatly benefiting from reading this book.
It is my opinion that the Survival Guide gives a great OVERVIEW into what bipolar disorder IS.
I don't belive that it is the best, or most hands-on book if one already has a general idea of what bipolar disorder is. For a more hands on approach, I would recommend Loving Someone with Bipolar disorder.

This is the best book I've found so far on bipolar disorder. I am a psychotherapist and also have bipolar disorder. The book was recommended to me by my psychiatrist and now I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the illness and for those of us trying to put our lives back together after being diagnosed. The mood chart is the best I've seen anywhere and I use it daily. This is a book you can give to a friend or family member that will open up the world of our very complex mental illness in ways that are straightforward and easy to assimilate. There's just nothing better out there at this time.

For those of us who are already familiar with the basics of our disorder and have been diagnosed for some time, this will be a total rehashing of what we already know.

However, for the newly diagnosed or for family members of the diagnosed, this is a wonderful primer.

I give it 4 stars as a primer for the newly diagnosed. It doesn't get 5 stars because it is very basic and doesn't go into detail about bipolar disorder.

I'm sorry but this isn't the best bipolar book, anymore. The material is too outdated to solve my problems. I read and reread the most recent bipolar book I purchased but this one just stays on the shelf. Also, I think it makes bipolar look simple, but we all know what a challenge it is to cope with this condition. And what are this author's credentials to write a book on bipolar? I want a medical expert to tell me about all the choices before I make up my mind.

This is an excellent informational resource for those who have little to no knowledge of bipolar disorder. However, in many respects this referrence minimizes the severity of the illness and oversimplifies the complexities of the disease. Much attention is given to "mood charting" which is an untested theory that has proven to be a futile waste of time in my own personal experience with bipolar disorder. Since the "moods" of bipolar disorder do not follow any predictable pattern (e.g. the sine curve), "mood charting" is of little benefit. Furthermore, and even more alarming, this reference presupposes that the sufferer can self-diagnose their own "mood" state at any given moment. Nothing could be further from the truth. The patient would be better off seeking the assistance of a voodoo priestess.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent guide to coping with bipolar disorder/manic depression

I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found. It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania. It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings. The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself.

ANY adults who might be struggling with mental health issues especially depression or some wild or gutsy behavior this book will help you on many levels.
I bought this book for myself and my own bipolar diagnosis (type 2). It has been 4 years since my "offical" diagnosis. Everything in this book is what I experienced or continue to experience. I'm glad I found it. I'm glad it was written.
Not sure if I would have been able to process reading it early on in my recovery. I keep it close by as a reference and a reminder that I am still a human being first and have a diagnosis that is not my fault.

EVERYONE should read this book at least once in their life time regardless of health issues. Education on a certain subject such as Bipolar can benefit friends or family, because someone might benefit from seeing a healthcare provider(s) who have some of the symptoms listed.

I bought this book on a whim when it popped up while I was purchasing something else along similar lines. Thirty pages into the book, I'd guess, in one afternoon, I decided to order another copy to give to my therapist. My feeling, as well as her's, is that the book is valuable to both the layman and the health-care professional. It is very easy to read yet does not mince words about symptoms, medications, reactions and interactions with family, friends and work. It also contains many worksheets and self-analyses that are very helpful for both the bipolar individual and the therapist. I recommend this book very highly to anyone suffering from any degree of bipolar or related illnesses.

I bought this book soon after being diagnosed as bipolar. I was disappointed in the book because it revealed little new information. The information contained in the book can be found online on many reliable websites, such as nami.org. I guess this book may be okay for the friend or family member of the bipolar person as an intro to the disease.

This book was like I said above great the first time around. The second time when I bought it I didn't feel like I gained anything from reading it. BUT the first time I gained a lot of knowledge. I just don't recommend reading it a second time. Unless you feel you have missed a lot from interruptions etc. It does have a wealth of knowledge and the author is very attuned to bipolar disorder and knows what he is talking about.

This book helped me to understand my own bipolar as well as understand my brother's bipolar. It is a must-read for family members of those suffering from bipolar as well as the patients themselves. It is a very informative book and explains a lot about this disorder that will help people to get a better understanding of it.
