This is a great book (series of books). I bought this for pathology along with the pocket guide, review of pathology, and atlas. All of the books correlate together well as long as you have the most current editions. They all bring something great to the table. This bog book is amazing. The text is clear and there are great pictures and it is a great pathology book for medical students. I would imagine it would serve excellently in any other health care discipline too. I highly recommend this book and the other mentioned books too.

the book is great, really it is just what i needed. about the shipping however, it arrived much earlier than expected which is good, but, the spine of the book was quite damaged because the box it was packed into was too big for it and i guess it kept sliding around and getting bumped. This is an expensive book and i think that the packaging should at least ensure it arrives to the owner in mint condition.

This (7th Edition) is a replacement to the Second Edition that I purchased 27 years ago as a requisite text to Human Pathology course in my second year of Optometry school. Similar in size, but with more contemporary concepts, this edition includes many helpful color images and illustrations. Includes up-to-date coverage of many emerging and re-emerging diseases - Lyme, West Nile and MRSA. Includes a CD-ROM that I have yet to explore.

I don't read a whole lot, (they should have an Amazon's Reader Poser Anonymous), BUT I do read this book. My instructor actually follows it well. There are also plenty of pictures that jog my memory. Interesting stuff. This along with Janeway's Immunobiology, Bates Physical Exam and the Merke Manual are some of my best purchases for medical school.

it's got a lot of information in it but this full edition of robbins (we call it "big robbins" to distinguish it from its two smaller siblings which are more "digests" in nature) is a pleasure to read. med school texts can be dry and awful but this one manages to tell the stories of things nicely and from different perspectives in each chapter. by the end of a chapter, you have the sense of seeing a thing multiple times and it hangs together well.

I wont add much to whats already been said. Im a first year mature age medical student with a few other degrees under my belt. I find it pretty dense but not overwhelmingly so and for those who want to go even deeper there are references for further reading. Highly recommended.

This is hands down the best path book, because it has all the diseases in easy to read format with nice tables and pics to complement. However you've got to have time in med school to read it. Depending on your curriculum and how fast you read you may want to compare it to small robins, which has less details and no gross pics.If you have enough time, meaning that you can read a chapter once and also read your notes at the same time without falling behind, then go for it. But if you cannot, then you might need to settle for the "pocket companion to robins". Even if you were able to use this book through your course you will definitely not use it(except for its gross pics) for the step 1. FOr that you will be served better with pocket companion. It has the same features as big robins except less details. I used the pocket companion, pics in big robins and goljan audio for the path for the step 1 and i made a 229/95.

The book is certainly a must have for any med student and/or related area people. It's the best you can get and certainly worth the money.

The problem I had was that the cover is laminated with some crappy plastic that goes all bubbly and the book just looks terrible after some extensive reading. This is certainly not a major issue (the looks does not afect the content after all), but e.g. Alberts "Mol Bio of the Cell" is certainly printed way better (better paper, better cover, etc). Something that the publisher should attend to in the 8th edition...

It's extremely detailed and they don't leave anything out. This is THE book for pathology. A great reference to have. But not a book you read from beginning to end. Vitually impossible. Unless you absolutely have no life. And when I say no life...I mean something's wrong with you.

It's extensive and the material is difficult, but surprisely the authors make this book easy and fun to read because it's so interesting. Well organized and essential for health professionals.

This book is phenomenally written, lusciously diagrammed, thoughtfully organized, and brilliantly coherent.

Thus far, it is the only book I have purchased in medical school that I dont consider, at least in some way, a waste of money. Sure, the BRS gets the points across, but do you really understand the material? I submit that if you only use the BRS and lecutre notes, probably not.

The only problem I have with the text is the binding. It gets white alond the books folding lines, and as one who really appreciated nice-looking books, this annoys me to no end. Oh well, I guess you cant have everything.

Get this book if you care about your medical education. Thats all there is to it...

I got alot of [...] from my classmates for "wasting time" reading this book. Most people will tell you that it's too detailed and too long. But I feel that Robbins does a great job of weaving in high yield details from the basic sciences (Physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy, pathophysiology) into the material presented, so that you're not JUST studying pathology as you read through. I am a "network" learner, which means the more that I can connect what I'm reading with things I already know, the more easily I remember it. If you prefer learning this way, reading Big Robbins is a better use of your time than reading Basic Pathology or Fetal Robbins over and over again. To add some more weight to my words, I honored every class of second year EXCEPT for behavioral science, which, interestingly, gets no love from Robbins. I literally feel like half of what I learned second year I learned from reading Robbins, or at least is mentioned in Robbins if I learned it in another class. When I was studying for Step 1, Robbins served as an excellent reference for pretty much all the basic sciences as well as pathology. As much as I love this book, I unfortunately cannot boast that I read the whole thing through once. I'm gonna take a stab at it during 3rd and 4th year though...

Don't try to read this monster unless your going into Pathology. It's very well written, but you just don't have time to cover this many details. You need to focus more on the Boards relevant material which is covered in books MUCH smaller (Rapid Review or BRS Path).

That said, this book has outstanding pictures, tables and diagrams. Moreover, even with the Internet and Wikipedia, this is an indespensible reference tool to look up areas that you've forgotten or aren't clear on and do reports on case studies. I purchased this book and Harrison's knowing full well that I wouldn't getting money out of them until Residency.

(Hide Review...)  One hundred dollar text. One dollar binding.
Reviewer Permalink
Much has been written about the quality of the text in this volume, and really, I agree with most of it. Robbins is a comprehensive textbook of human pathology, and is well written, though perhaps it could use a few more illustrations. Based on the text alone, I'd give it four or five stars.

The binding, however, is anemic, and worthy of one, or perhaps two stars. I have never seen a book's binding fail so regularly nor so spectacularly as I have with this book. After one year of use, my copy needed to be rebound. Several of my classmates have also had theirs rebound, or are about to. Several others have reinforced their copies with tape. One classmate had his book's binding fail entirely; he now has two or three pieces and carries whichever piece he is reading. This book bears a price tag of over $100, and I don't feel that I've gotten my money's worth. I may not have babied this book, but I haven't abused it, either.

That said, Robbins is *the* pathology text, and it is because it's a *good* pathology text. If you study at a computer, the online version of the text is very useable and easily searchable (easier to search through than the hard copy, actually,) and though of course you can't use a highlighter or take notes in the margins, you can take notes and bookmark sections.

Final analysis? Yes, buy this book. But have a plan in place for when the binding goes.

(Hide Review...)  Good reference book, not a teaching one.
Reviewer Permalink
This review is for the previous two editions.
Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease is widely used in medical school as an introduction to the field of pathology. The book is well referenced and very detailed, and there lies some of its weakness. As a reference book it does not get any better, however the writing style rambles around an issue and leaves you with a feeling that you just do not know what you read.
Pathology, for being a science, is fairly weak. The description of a disease is sometimes based on multiple facts which we do not understand as a whole. For example headaches are decribed in multiple categories, but the tratment for all of them is in most cases unknown. What works for one person does not work for another. Robbins gives you all the details, but in many cases fails to teach you the scientific pathophysiology of a disease. For example, instead of giving you a concise picture of each disease (ie asthma) it tells you about the HLA associations, and many other random details that have no bearing in patient treatment.
Again, as a reference book is excellent. For learning the hard real meat of each disease, stick to Harrison's Internal Medicine and your basic science books.

If your pathology lecture handouts look like this:
"toxoplasma - immunocompromised host - cardiac transplant"
and you are thinking, "What causes what? Can professors use verbs?"
then this may be the book for you.

I found myself in the situation of requiring more explanation, and R&C PBD fits the bill.

Pros:
- Thorough (at over 1500 pages, it better be!).
- Readable - I noticed that people disagreed on this point. No, it is not "fun" to read, but I think it is as good as you can get. The text does not assume that you have mastered the previous chapters, it provides explanation throughout, making it possible to open it anywhere and still understand what is going on.
- Summary tables, nice photos, clear diagrams - could maybe use more of them.

Cons:
- It's enormous! of course, that's a problem with the subject, not the book. I guess you have to ask yourself if you can set aside the time and concentration to get through it, if not, purchase BRS pathology. (Tip: if the weight of a 1500-pg. book bothers you, get the binding removed at a copy shop and carry the currently relevant pages)
- No study questions - I recommend its Review of Pathology companion with 1100+ questions for ample board review.

Good luck, you hardcore path master!

This book is comprehensive. I bought it because my school issued me the "Robbin's Basic Pathology" and I wanted the extra detail. I wasn't disappointed. The explanations are quite clear, and the CD that comes with allows you access to the complete text of the book online, as well as some practice sample cases and lots of slides. It is a bit tough to get through, simply because it is long, but the rewards are considerable. I highly recommend this book.

...so goes your Medicine". That was on a T-shirt made by a path professor in med school, and while it seemed pretty self-serving at the time, it turns out to be largely true. To master the trade, you need a clear, concise understanding of pathology, and Robbins has been and continues to be the best source from which to learn our trade. I read mine through on schedule, re-read it each weekend with a highlighter one chapter at a time, then transferred my highlights to a notebook (I think for me that was where most of the info actually sunk in) and then at exam time used only my notebooks to review. It worked great for me, and while the "mini-Robbins" was loved by many, I never really used mine, finding the above system more than adequate. Robbins remains a great book that you must digest. Good luck!

"Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease" is a cleverly woven text. It delivered general pathology in a simple and comprehensible language.
From cell injury to tissue inflammation, organ disorder to system failure, 'Robbins' provides the complete details that meet the requirements of most B.Sc., B.M.L.Sc., M.B.B.S., and B.D.S. undergraduates. It also has what it takes to lighten the yoke of even the most advanced learner.
This book is a bundle of expanded information on pathophysiology. Its quadrennial revisions, (which include the illustrative tables and figures), help to keep the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities current.

This is my one pearl for all second year students preparing for the boards: This book is the gold standard for being properly prepared for the Boards. I memorized this book, Ganong's Physiology, Katzung's pharm review, Jawetz's Micro review. I also memorized Lippincot's Biochem, NMS Neuroscience, NMS Genetics. I broke 260 and am now a first year resident at my first choice for neurosurgery (and I would only settle for the most prestigous programs).

If you have have high aspirations and want a competitive residency in NeuroSurg, Plastic, Derm or Radiology then you must master this book and memorize the pocket companion also. It is so much more thorough than the BRS and retains some element of succinctness. There are no path questions on the boards that you won't be able to get if you memorize Robbins Pocket Companion book from cover to cover.

That is the key, Memorize, Memorize, Memorize then Regurgitate, Regurgitate, Regurgitate and you too can pick where you want to do your residency like I did.

This book rules for obtaining a competitive edge over your fellow classmates and other students around the country who try to get by on review books and the lecture notes.

Good Luck on Step 1. It is the most important test of your life and this is the book to work it out.

There are hundreds of thousands of medical facts existing in this field. Memorizing all of them seems impossible to medical students. The only way to turn out this dead end is to understand fundamental mechanisms of diseases. Robbins illustrates those mechanisms with easy-to-understand ways. No confusion, no frustration. I also wannna criticize the "Basic Pathology". Although it's written by the same authors, it's too simple. With not much corcern to mechanisms. This book leads ambitious readers to hell!

The only problem I find is that you gotta have TIME to read it, and that thing is not so abundant when you study medicine. But believe me, once you read it, you will master pathology, and it is a MUST for a reference book, in your pathology year as well as in the future.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent for understanding the basics of pathology
Reviewer Permalink
This is an excellent book for medical students as well as for those who want to be in touch with the latest development in the field of pathology. The fundamentals of basic and systemic pathology are very nicely elaborated in this book. I would not recommend to read this book cover to cover to any one who is preparing for USMLE but it would be very helpful to read certain topics like immunology, genetics, cell injury etc. form this book for a better understanding.
