Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, Sixth Edition

YES! You have the right book!!

For thirty (30!) years the world's best seller (printed in 28 languages), RAPID INTERPRETATION OF EKG's is the most popular and most referenced of all EKG (ECG) texts. But beware... success breeds imitations.

Competitors, aware of its longstanding success, imitate this classic by using synonyms for RAPID or INTERPRETATION or by substituting "ECG's" for EKG's. Don't be deceived by the numerous look-alikes with enticing titles. There is only one RAPID INTERPRETATION OF EKG's.

Now it is the most current text of its kind, since it is updated yearly. Extensively illustrated and simplified to assure rapid comprehension, an entire chapter is easily consumed and mastered in a sitting. In the process of learning EKG interpretation, the reader gains a deeper understanding of cardiac physiology. Emphasis is on UNDERSTANDING rather than memorizing, so readers quickly acquire a lifetime of practical knowledge.

This is a light and easy read that covers the basic science behind EKGs and how to interpret them. I bought this book as a second resource for PA school, and I am glad I did. Our 'assigned' class text was terrible, and I thought I was doomed until I found this book. It helped me to grasp the basics since I didn't have much prior experience. This book would be great for someone that needs an easy and fun read on how to approach an EKG even if you've never done it before. This book doesn't cover every single higher concept, but it should teach you what you need to know and give you a foundation to understand the rest.

Dubin's book is not bad. The main text is not terribly high yield for studying for an exam in med school. The format is a little infuriating--too many pages containing trivial information that you're forced to flip through and skim. The useful information in this book, however, is really useful which makes this book somewhat worth reading. The summary/pocket guide that is included in the back is extremely high yield and that alone can be used in conjunction with the course materials/syllabi to get a good picture of typical EKG patterns and their pathophysiology.

I really enjoyed this book. It is interactive (fill in the blank with the answers right in the margins). There's lots of repetition so you get the concepts quickly and review them frequently. I loved this book and will keep it for my whole career because of its superb explanations and review purposes!

This book was somewhat helpful for learning how to interpret EKG's. It could be a primary resource for EMT students. Medical students will probably need a more detailed resource to explain more detailed concepts, such as action potentials. Unfortunately, while searching for this book, I found out that Dale Dubin was convicted in 1986 on drug and child pornography charges, and sentenced to five years in federal prison. You can google "Dale Dubin convicted" or check out snopes.com for the story. The book was good, but if I had know what he did, I would not want to support his book. What a disappointment.

I was told by many paramedics to read this book BEFORE taking an EKG class. I'm glad I listened. It completely breaks down the concepts into a simple, easy to understand format. It can be a bit dry and you need to take a lot of breaks to get through the book, but it makes it so simple to understand. I would highly recommend this book.

i just got this book about a month ago because some friends of mine that started and are in residency said that i should be able to read ekg's when i walk in on day one of internship. so i use to use those other ekg books in the past but this one, from their recommendation and now my reading, is truly the best. i can't believe i didnt read this in my student years. its very simple and gives you the foundation of understanding the ekg from bottom up. read it like you never read any other book and it will open your mind up to knowing exactly where and what each rhythm is. im sure with experience you learn more as you see more but this is definitely a must have for anyone in the medical field. its like a story from start to finish. possibly one of the best books i've come across in medicine. forget any other ekg book...

Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, Sixth Edition
An excellent starting point for those who have trouble with ECGs. I use this book for most of my students. After teaching ACLS for over 15 years, I've found that ECG interpretation seems to intimidate students the most. The advantage of Dr. Dubin's book is that it assumes you know nothing to start. Granted, it's not the definitive text on ECG interpretation, rather a gentle introduction to ECGs. I have found that those students who start with more advanced texts fail to grasp some of the fundamentals which are well laid-out in this book. In addition, I find that nurses and paramedics with limited exposure to ECG interpretation can easily grasp the basics with this book.

This is the one EKG book you should own; I have heard more than a few EKG instructor state that this is the one book to have on the suject. Dr. Dubin's book is the most imformative and concise book on the subject; he literally makes you learn the information through footer information about key points, mental fill in the blanks with answers in the margin, and suggested review points with page numbers. If you read this book from cover to cover, you would be able to talk to a cardiologist with confidence. It also makes a great quick reference regarding all the key points of ECG.

It is very likely that if you are in the health care field, you or someone you know has this book, or has studied it a few times. Now in its sixth edition, it's been around quite a while (the basic principles have changed little in 30 years). I have to say, this book lives up to the hype as an educational tool. The author does a good job with USEFUL diagrams (and a lot of them are fun!), review questions and repetition with key points, giving you the basics without being too sketchy... he starts from the very beginning, how much time is in one of those little squares, and builds from there, covering rate, rhythm, vectors, and then goes into hypertrophy and infarctions/ischemia.
As a couple of small quibbles, he could expand the MI section a bit, it seems to be a little more rushed than some of the other areas. In addition, more practice EKGs would be nice, though there are other books and online stuff for that.
Highly recommended.

(Hide Review...)  Most readable book on understanding EKGs...ever!
Reviewer Permalink
Having borrowed numerous friends' copies in medical school to get a handle on what an EKG is, how it's created and how to read one, I decided it was time to get my own.

I'm currently studying for the USMLE Step 1 and this is an invaluable resource for understanding the above.

Not just for medical students, anyone interested in what an EKG is and what the squiggles mean would be well served to get this. The print quality is the highest (all the pages are heavy and glossy and it is color throughout). More importantly, the author breaks down the information in a step-by-step fashion to convey the information in layman's terms so that virtually anyone from any background can understand the information, not just healthcare professionals.

More reader-friendly than even the Dummy's series, this book is understandable and non-threatening, ensuring the reader has a grasp of the concepts through color drawings, diagrams, fill-in-the blank sentences and other learning tools.

I can't recommend it highly enough. If only all books on technical subjects were so friendly.

This is one of the few required books for my nursing program that I will not sell at the end of the semester. It is very easy to understand, and the author actually inserts brief quizzes and reminders to go back and study certain pages to link the knowledge together, helping you cycle through the material and retain it, rather than reading it once with little benefit. You actually can teach yourself using this book. I highly recommend it!

Dubin's book on EKGs has a different approach that includes repetition of ideas, blanks for self-assurance, and a lot of review. The back of the book includes many strips for easy reference and review. Reading is enjoyable. The basics are covered first and pathology is covered last, from less challenging strips to more challenging. I got a lot out of this book. I had another EKG learning-book, which didn't compare to the fun and ease of learning that Dubin's book has. This book is good for future reference also. Buy and keep!

I used the Dubin's 1st edition to supplement my own learning during my initial telemetry course. I now encourage our students to purchase their own 6th edition to supplement the classroom or on-line learning we provide. It is excellent for the entry level nurse or resident just starting out in health care, or as a reference guide for those who do not use their EKG interpretation skills often. The graphics provided in this edition are a visual plethora of information to lay down the basic rules of the skill. This seems to be one reference book that gets "borrowed forever", so the price is a fair investment. Definitely a keeper.

I personally own three EKG texts, and have looked at several others. I can tell you that this one is the best (in my humble opinion of course). Dr. Dubin has a picture at the top of each page with a caption explaining the material. Underneath this picture and caption are fill in the blank sentences below (for review of course). Each page gives you new material while at the same time reviews past material. Learning be repetition, and it works!! This book has everything from learning how to read a basic EKG strip, to how to recognize bundle branch blocks, MI's, and PE's on a EKG strip. My nursing instructor referred to this book as, "The bible of EKG text books." You will be amazed at how quickly you will learn this material. Need I say more?
