My Boys Can Swim!: The Official Guy's Guide to Pregnancy

Finally—A Pregnancy Book That Won't Put Men to Sleep
My Boys Can Swim! tells real men everything they really want to know about pregnancy, such as: How much is it going to cost? Why does your wife primp before seeing her doctor when she hasn't put a stitch of make-up on for you in months? And, most important, what's it going to do to your sex life?
This rollicking, laugh-out-loud book is for expectant dads in search of bottom-line pregnancy information, without all that boring touchy-feely stuff you find in those books written for women. Inside you'll discover helpful—and hilarious—information and insights on such topics as:
The Maternity Wardrobe: "A key part of the maternity wardrobe is maternity underwear—parachute-like undies big enough to fit an NFL defensive lineman."
Baby Names: "Don't give your kids mockable names like Thaddeus, which is Greek for 'I'm a dork and should be beaten up.'"
The Birth: "No one told me it's normal that babies' heads can be misshapen at birth. I was convinced that my wife gave birth to Veldar, the conehead."

My husband blazed through this book in a day, laughing through most of it. Although there were a handful of topics I thought were missing, it was thorough enough for him. I plan to buy this book for every first-time dad I know in the future!

I bought this book for my husband after reading some reviews on Amazon.com. According to the reviews, this sounded like a fun book. I read the book when we received it (in about 45 minutes, that's how small it is), and I was very disappointed. While the author tries to hide it with humor, he is obviously unhappy that his wife is pregnant. It's little things that give it away, like when he says if you're into the fact that your wife has gained weight and gotten bigger, then you should tell her so. You should tell her so regardless! Lie through your teeth! That is the time for an oscar-worthy performance! If you are looking for humerous advice from a guy's perspective, I highly recommend "She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown" by James Douglas Barron.

The book was a great first read for men. it was entertaining, well written, and in general a great informational book. It did, however, lack all the medical explanations and details. The author tells you that is not the purpose of this book, so it is not misleading in anyway. I would definitely suggest it for a new dad, but I would pair it with a more detailed look at pregnancy. Enjoy!

I wanted to buy my husband a good book to read since we are expecting our first child. Based on the high star rating I picked this one. Now my husband is not much of a reader but even he was taken aback when we opened the package and out came this slender, tiny book. Clocking in at 92 pages in big type and several cartoons, we correctly assumed that there really wouldn't be much there. The book was definitely funny and had us giggling a few times, but when he finished my husband was disappointed and really hadn't learned much if anything.

If you want a book about the realities of pregnancy, written in a humorous and engaging way, try out Jenny McCarthy's Book Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth. This book is aimed more at women, but has a similar feel to "My Boys Can Swim!" while managing to convey a lot more information.

I was surprised by just how short this book was. I bought it for my husband and while he quite enjoyed it I think it was a bit lacking in any real information. I think it's more of a short comedy book than an actual guide to pregnancy.

My adorable husband is oh-so supportive of our first pregnancy but he definitely draws the line at reading the baby books. I got him this book based on one of the other recommendations and he has had a blast reading it. I would hear him laughing in the Dr's waiting room when he accompanied me on my OB visits and his presence was not required. He is already recommending it to friends that are "trying" and I'm sure it will get loaned out quite a bit. I have read it - it's a humorous look at pregnancy from the man's POV. I like the fact that it reinforces that we women may be a bit emotional and hormonal (so true) so give us exactly what we want and don't give us a hard time. :)

This book was a complete joke to us. My husband probably wasn't the prime target audience for this book - this book seems to be aiming at men who could care less about any aspect of the pregnancy and just want to read something to make their wife happy. Since my husband actually CARES about the pregnancy and wants to know what is going on, this was NOT the book for him.

This book held basically NO real information at all other than the most basic observations (maternity clothes cost a lot, you will be spending a lot of money, never tell your wife she looks fat, your wife may be gassy, don't pick a name that causes teasing). Seriously? This is the OFFICAL guide? /rolleyes/ My digital camera manual is more in-depth.

Yes, I get that it's supposed to be humorous - and I did laugh a few times. But it definitely wasn't worth the money. This book was an hour read (at most) and I was left feeling completely ripped off at having spent $10 on it - maybe $3.95 in the bargain bin. It should be called "A Guy's Humorous Pocket Guide to Pregnancy" - I didn't pay attention to the pages or the size (this thing is TINY - it could almost fit in my back pocket!).

This will be the last time I buy a book just by seeing the number of stars and without reading more of the reviews.

I bought this book for my husband thinking it would be a cute, funny read for him. It is funny in the beginning but overall ends up sounding sour and rude. The author doesn't seem to be very sensitive toward his own wife or the whole pregnancy experience. I think he tries too hard to be funny and comes off sounding like a jerk who doesn't really care. I have a very high tolerance for stupid humor but this book crosses the line. Save your money and buy something cute for your husband.

For all those people who gave this book a low rating....PLEASE SPEND SOME TIME LOOKING FOR YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR!!! This book is great for men. Women need to remember that men do not go through the pregnancy and will never really know what it feels like to be a woman and frankly I don't want them to. Men can only know how they feel when their partner is knocked up. This book looks at pregnancy from a mans view with a real, light hearted and loving sense of humor. I can tell Mr. Davis really loves his wife. I wish all men could be so honest in their love for their partners. If you want a book that is boring and full of facts that will probably never happen in your life read "what to expect..." this book is full of real life experience made funny by a clever, witty, imaginative and I am sure handsome man!!!!

Like it claims, this is a book for men. That is, the worst of men. The ones who belittle women, mock foreign accents, make fun of children's names and, generally, are lucky to have gotten a woman in bed at all. If you're buying this to actually learn something, look elsewhere. If you're buying this because you're a guy who needs to look like he's reading a pregnancy book to pacify the little woman, you found it. To be sure, this book is horrifically offensive, extraordinarily self-indulgent and terribly written. A title like, "The Red Neck's Guide to Pregnancy" would be more apt. Fortunately, at one-sixteenth of an inch thick, it'll all be over quickly.

I bought this for my husband, thinking it sounded like a light hearted guide for guys. It's not - it's pretty much one long anecdote about his wife's pregnancy. I can also sum up the whole thing in one sentence: "Your wife will be fat, mean, and blame you for everything so tell her she's pretty and get out of the house." My husband liked some parts, like to stay above the elbow during delivery since blood makes him pass out...but the rest was kind of insulting to both of us. This caters to a LOT of stereotypes that are pretty annoying. It also holds very little in the way of actual descriptions and conditions.

I wanted to buy my husband a book to read to understand what my body and my mind was going through during this pregnancy. I bought this book because my husband isn't exactly the avid reader. I was expecting that it would be detailed in what I was going through as well as what he could expect, but we both were less than happy about it. It barely touches the topics of pregnancy, let alone dives into detail. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are looking for a quick read about pregnancy that is otherwise common sense.

With this book, Ian Davis did a great job of relating material to his target audience with a humorous and informative delivery. It was never boring, and his insights were amusing and insightful.

Bear in mind, this is not a reference book for expecting fathers. If you're looking to this book to thoroughly guide you through the rigors of pregnancy and parenthood, this isn't the right book. You might want to try The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips and Advice for Dads-to-Be, Second Edition, which is a good thorough reference guide that helps to prepare you for the realistic responsibilities that lie ahead. Instead, this is a humorous glossy overview of some of the things you might expect over the next 9 months.

My only gripes are that the book is VERY short, and that it's pricey for what it is. I finished the book in one day during my daily commute, which is a 35 minute bus ride each way. And considering it's basically about the size and length of a pocket pamphlet, it's somewhat overpriced at $10.

However, these are the only things holding it back from being a 5-star review. It's a fun read, and it does accomplish what it sets out to do... to give expectant fathers some perspective on the rigors they are about to face during their introduction to fatherhood.

This is not the most informative book for men about the fine details of pregnancy, but it's a great way to help husbands feel involved. I left this book in the bathroom for my husband, and he loved it. It's very hard to get my husband to read books, so the fact that he actually read this entire book in a week is impressive.

However, it doesn't have a lot of solid advice. The illustrations are hilarious - but truly - it's my suggestion that if you want a book that has great information for your partner, What to Expect When You're Expecting is the one. Written for women, true, but has nothing that would be offensive to some sensitive men and is just great info.

I sent this book to my friend's husband as a gift, and he not only called to say how much he liked it, but he has recommended it to all of his "pregnant" friends. It's the best present you can give to average guy who will read nothing about pregnancy, or who doesn't read much at all! Highly recommend.

my wife slipped this book under my pillow and used it to announce the big news. I don't think she ever intended for me to reead it, and frankly I just set it aside with the dozen or so books on pregnancy she had already purchased for herself. As we began to inform friends and family of the pregnancy, I received two more copies of this book in the mail as gifts! I figured that there had to be more to the book than a funny title. So I started to read it. It is actually really funny, especially the illustrations. It's more a collection fo stories about what every day people go through. I now find myself recommending it to others.
