Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn’t provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her “liver looked like Swiss cheese,” covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, “Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!” She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative “quacks,” blind dates, and other women with cancer—sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others. The Learning Channel broadcast the premiere of Carr’s unforgettable documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer on August 29, 2007. CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr’s own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. Chapters cover your changing social life, dating, sex, and appearance; essential health tips on how to boost your immune system; recipes; medical and holistic resources; and information on young survivor support groups. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them. |

I am an 18 year leukemia survivor. I was diagnosed at age 5 and I'm 24 now. I am in my last year of college and I really didn't start feeling pretty, or sexy or anything because I've never had a boyfriend so I thought I wasn't beautiful enough for anyone. Then I saw Kris's documentary on TLC and that changed tha way I felt about myself. I still don't have a boyfriend yet but I know there is one guy out there who will find me someday and he will see me as beautiful and sexy.

This book is not just for people with cancer. After seeing the author's documentary, and totally falling in love with her, I pre-ordered this book. You can't -not- fall in love with Kris Carr. She's open and fun and intelligent and has wonderful infectious energy. The guy shooting the film fell in love with her too and now they're married.
What drew me in is my belief in Prevention. I have been close to people suffering with cancer and at an early age became interested in a healthy lifestyle with emphasis on whole foods. Her focus on greens is right in line with my thinking and I find this book to be a great support for my own vegan lifestyle which at times can be just a little bit difficult (culturally, not personally). Her blog is great support as well and is also infused with her brilliant spirit. I can't say enough good things about her or the book, just get it. Give it to anyone you know who might be struggling with any sort of degenerative disease and use it for support in prevention. The China Study by Campbell is mentioned in her book repeatedly and is my favorite work on the subject of healthcare and food. I highly recommend reading it in conjunction with CSC. After a personal cancer diagnosis, this was one of the first books I read pertaining to recovery. I read many more later, but none were quite as uplifting and encouraging as this one.
Besides detailing her own struggle with cancer, Kris Carr offers page after page of tips that are do-able, and will make you feel as if you really can beat the disease. All the other five star reviews are here for a reason. This book is informative, helpful, optimistic, and bravely written. Bravo, Kris Carr. I'll be reading your next book for sure. (Just ordered it, in fact :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-29 01:36:40 EST)

I watched an interview with Ms. Carr on Montel Williams and was impressed with her attitude toward cancer. I am walking through stage 4 lung cancer and firmly believe that a positive attitude makes a major difference in the outcome. Couldn't wait for the book to arrive and started reading it the minute it hit my mail box. By the time I hit page 40, I had to throw the book away . . . any encouragement or advice offered by the author was totally lost in the deluge of F-bombs and curse words. What could have been an awesome gift to anyone battling cancer lost all credibility. Buyer beware!

This book is full of advice and how to's and stories that make managing the little c a little easier. It's not so much about having cancer, but more about living healthy no matter the diagnosis. We're all gonna die, but how many of us really live?

I started reading this book as I was just beginning to recover from my second cancer hit. She manages to express things that I couldn't put into words until I read hers. I think one of the most valuable tips is to collect a posse--and these can be people you don't even know. She offers many recourses to answer questions one might have. I'm not sure this is the best to read if you have JUST been diagnosed, because she relates to those who are through the initial shock of hearing the word cancer. She concentrates on how to LIVE and is such an inspiration herself. The greatest thing is that I didn't have to read about survival rates, thank you kris.

This is one of the best books written to understand two very important things, CANCER IS NOT A DEATH NOTE and YOU CAN LIVE WITH CANCER. Insightful, delightful, sometimes difficult to read from an emotional point of view. It is raw, real and wonder-filled. A handbook for those dealing with cancer and for those who want to understand those who have cancer better.

I read CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS cover to cover on a a flight from LA to NY. I laughed out loud, wept quietly, and most of all, marveled at the magic that is Kris Carr. If Deepak Chopra, "What To Expect When You're Expecting," and Sex and the City had a love child, it would look just like Kris' CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS. It is sheer perfection for cancer "cowgirls" and their loved ones--colorful, soulful, and intimate.

I read this book after downing about 2,000 pages of breast cancer research and, as any woman facing breast cancer knows, laughter is the MOST amazing medicine--and it's a lot more fun than chemo! I love that Kris Carr manages weave together the logical, reasonable and rational with some of the more entertaining, unreasonable and utterly irrational thoughts that cancer can inspire. I am so grateful for her happily twisted sense of humor--this book was the first time I laughed while reading anything related to cancer.
It's also a great resource for young women with cancer; some very smart, sassy women offer their survivor's wisdom related to various subjects (fertility, being baldo, parenting, etc.). I'd highly recommend this to any young woman facing cancer, or to a fantastic friend or loved one who wants a bit of insight to the experience of having cancer when you're far, far, far, far, way too young. As a cancer survivor, I wanted to like this book. I love the idea of a "hip" survival/inspirational guide for women. I am so glad that Kris Carr has dealt so well with a devastating diagnosis. This points to a true strength of spirit. I think the author's heart is in the right place, but something went wrong here. I didn't find this book hip, or funny. It struck a bad chord for me. When I had cancer I too was 31. I didn't go through a decision-making process about whether to tell my esthetician about my illness. I wasn't worried about getting my bikini area waxed. I didn't go on a "cancervation" with my "posse", because I was working to pay my bills and keep my health insurance. I didn't attend retreats and trainings and buy hundreds of dollars of goods from Whole Foods on shopping trips and make a documentary about myself. People deal with trauma and heal in different ways, and spending freely seems to have been beneficial to Kriss Carr's personal journey. Each woman featured in this book talks about her height and weight, and Kris Carr makes numerous references to her own weight and desire to weigh less. It seems the opposite of "empowering", and perhaps a bit disingenuous, for a woman who looks (at least in her photos) radiantly healthy, beautiful, stylish, and very thin to keep making references to desire for weighing less. I'd find it inspirational to hear things along the lines of "I used to worry about my weight before cancer, but since I've changed my diet and lifestyle, my body has changed and I'm very happy with it, I feel very comfortable in my own skin now" (or something like that). When I had cancer, I was more concerned with getting well than stepping on the scale. I'm well and healthy, now, my looks are something I pay attention to but emphasizing it in a book focused on cancer seems wrong. I can't pretend to know what it's like to have the disease that Kris Carr is living with. She seems to be doing something right - a lot of somethings. I respect this tremendously. I'd love to hear more about diet and exercise, more on inner process, less about numbers on the scale and appearance and the things that money can buy. Maybe focusing on this is meant to distract the mind, and I've missed the point!

Although this author touches glibly upon a few difficult issues that occurred during her journey through diagnosis and treatment, her not-going-to-take this lying down spirit is infectious. Her extensive exploration into alternative adjunctive treatments while oppressed by her other treatments is inspiring. She uses a vernacular that is spot- on and reaches out to tickle your funny bone as well as your heart. She sets the spotlight not only on herself but also other women experiencing similiar ordeals and who have created a wonderful network of supportive resources.
She lays down the gauntlet to cancer with cowboy boots, green smoothies, a posse, and making a documentary. By the end of this book, you don't get the sense that this woman is defined by her cancer diagnosis although it certainly was a catalyst for major changes. This book has great tips and resources for anyone going through any kind of cancer (I like especially that it touches on insurance issues)or someone who is close to someone going through cancer. This includes a great website forum the author has also created as both ongoing student and teacher of physical and mental well-being. This book really brings home the lesson of living in the moment. ...if you or anyone you know is a young woman with cancer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34 and cried when I received this book. I had no community support system and I finally felt as though I "belonged" somewhere. The tips are priceless and Kris is a cancer goddess. I never would have made it through my diagnosis had my hubby not bought me this book! I have since started a support group for young women in my area because Kris Carr was so inspiring. This will uplift someone, I plan to pass my copy on!

Kris Carr tells her story well. Her book is colorful, well printed and informative! it's about the alternative lifestyle she chose, which was not chemotherapy or radiation or even surgery. She opted for diet, yoga and attitude. This is not the journey that a lot of people have the option to take, or want to take. Please see, "goddesses don't buy green bananas" [...] This is a photographic story of 40 woman, all ages all kinds of cancer.

I bought this book for my MIL when she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. This book had her laughing so much. She thanked me for the gift of good medicine, laughter. All of the contributors of this book touched parts of my mother in law that really related to how she felt in an uncanny and sarcastic way. This book also offers inspiration as well. Definitely not a boring book!

This is, hands down, the best cancer book you can buy. I not only bought this for myself, but I also have bought it and recommended it for everyone I know who has been affected by cancer. This book should (and did in my case) give many people hope. Unlike much of the initial reading I did on cancer, this made me laugh - a good laugh, the kind I needed, just like many need.
Kris is an inspiration to so many people and she will continue to be. I highly recommend anyone interested in this book to also check out her website and stay on the edge of their seats to catch her film (which I believe stopped showing in order to go to DVD) which is called Crazy Sexy Cancer. She has her own website using the same title as well as a blog on blogspot (same title). Men also would enjoy this book, it's not just for ladies! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-14 06:50:27 EST)

LIFE CHANGING !! This book is not only for canser patients, you can just put your challenge in for the word canser. I put in Lupus and most of the book applied. Kris opens her heart and shares everything with you, mind, body, and spirit to help you heal completely ! She encourages you to become a crazy sexy cowgirl or chap and take charge of your life and health with 77 healing tips. For example, tip no. 3 Create A Sacred Space, Kris writes " It may sound like total tree-hugging hippie new-age crap, but it helps to have a corner of your home that feels sacred. " kris goes on to tell you about her alter made from a wooden bed tray. tip no. 16 Incurable Is Not A Declaration But A Dare ! tip no. 22 Create And Maintain A Medical Binder. Great info on how to put together your own or were to order. Then my favorite, all of chapter six, "Eat your veggies and shake your a**." This chapter is full of tips on diet, moving your body, cleansing your body and juicing those greens ! I am very new into this life style and already am seeing positive results in all areas ! not to mention i've lost 16 pounds ! Kris ends the book with alot of her favs, recipes, books, web sites, posse blogs ,I visit Kris's everyday to check in with all the crazysexy cowgirls and chaps, they are all inspiring, loving people, alot of young people, but also some older ones, such as myself ( fourty-something ) and Kris drops in often to offer help, support and guidance !
I could go on and on . I have read zillions of books on healing, and this one blows them all away ! I promise you will not regret this purchase ! peace and veggies, just t (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-14 06:50:27 EST)

From a cancer survivor's perspective, the book's name is so inappropriate and a marketing ploy to get people to buy and from the "great" reviews here, it worked. Now, people who DON'T have cancer are going to believe that cancer is sexy. As a two-time cancer survivor, I could not relate to the book or its tips and NEVER felt sexy at one time. Maybe it was the two years of chemo and a stem cell transplant that did it. I also could not fly around the world and dance or shop like Kris. I had too many medical bills for that. Please understand that cancer should NOT be glorified. It's neither sexy, fun or easy. I know that Kris has a terminal cancer, but I am afraid she is sending the wrong message about cancer and is self-promoting. The great reviews seem to be by people who DON'T have cancer and who DON'T know how terrible this treatment can be, its harsh effects and the effects on families and loved ones. Kris Carr is sending the wrong message about cancer and in that respect, doing a lot of harm. If you are looking for a serious book, this book is not it. Kris makes cancer seem way too fun.

I am an ONcology Social Worker for over 18 years and this book is one both myself and my patients have found very helpful. IF is full of positive images and words. It is also a book that you can read parts of and still get the conceop. I highly recommend this book to patients and the professionals who work with them.

I have two adopted daughters and both of them contracted breast cancer when they reached 35. We have since discovered that a genetic defect is the cause (they are sisters). I saw Kris Carr on Oprah and decided to buy the book for one of my daughters. I began thumbing through it before giving it to her, and couldn't put it down. It was informative, scary, humorous and hopeful. It helped me to understand better what they have gone through and continue to go through. I'd recommend it to anyone who is facing cancer with a loved one. I bought it to help them, and it ended up helping me in the process.

I was diagnosed with cancer two years ago at the age of 32 and at the time I certainly yearned for cancer guidebooks and first-person narratives that reflected my experience as a "young" person with cancer. But I'm not sure if this book would have helped me. Page after glossy page, it makes cancer seem like more fun than it really is. Crazy sexy beautiful cancer babes? I'm all for empowerment, but cancer treatment makes you feel like utter garbage. I can imagine coming home from a chemo-vomit-fest at the hospital to open up a book filled with beautiful, thin, made-up, well-coiffed women (who, of course, have dashing, heroic boyfriends and husbands who always make them feel better) -- only to feel that I don't measure up. What, now I have to feel sassy and sexy when I'm being poisoned by intravenous drugs? How about a book for the rest of us, with our imperfect bodies and hairdos and our romantic partnerships with fallible human beings who don't always save the day? I appreciate the spirit of the project, but the book would have been improved with some glossy photos of these beautiful women looking and feeling like death warmed over. It's great to have your spirits lifted, and to be reminded that you're still "crazy and sexy" even though you have cancer -- it's great to refuse to be defined entirely by the disease. But let's not pretend that cancer isn't terrifying and devastating and painful and isolating, and that sometimes you just WON'T feel good. Cancer is a grim, ugly thing. Let's not paper over that with fancy makeup and pink ribbons. A truly empowering book would embrace the ugly AND the beautiful sides of the experience. I think the author had the right spirit; I think the publishing company's marketing department just got the best of her.

Crazy Sexy Cancer is like a wise girlfriend, inspiring, insightful, occasionally irreverent, uplifting but without sugarcoating.
Kris Carr, who here shares her story and insights along with those of her eclectic kickass "cancer posse," is utterly lovely and engaging. (Catch her on Oprah if you can find it online-- she exudes peace and loveliness and the art of being truly present. All while facing a crappy rare form of cancer that technically has no cure. Her blog is pretty amazing too.) I do not have cancer but consider myself privileged to have connected with the "crazy sexy cancer" world Ms. Carr shares with us, and am grateful to be able to share it in turn with a friend who is newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Crazy Sexy Cancer is a great reminder to live authentically, fearlessly, and gracefully, whether you're facing down cancer, supporting a loved one with cancer, or simply (?!) seeking to live more consciously and courageously. The book is a great pick me up. I've had breast cancer twice and her story is so energizing. It's like a cheerleader...a boost...an inspiration, a "come on, you can do it" book. If you can take cancer and tackle it head on the way she has... how much more motivating does one need? She has a sense of humor and a spirit that is refreshing compared to the whirlwind of cancer and all the garbage that comes with it. I found it invigorating. She gives a whole new meaning to survivor.

The first thing I have to say is I don't read. Books that is. People have given me books as gifts, books that they really think I would want to read. And I do WANT to read them, but I don't. I just don't like reading books. But then I got this book. I saw this LOVELY lady on Oprah and immediately ordered her book from here. I read it in THREE DAYS! I couldn't wait for lunch so I could read. I couldn't wait to get home so I could read. That is how great Kris's book is. And its not just for people with cancer. I don't have cancer. I don't even know anyone who has cancer but I loved every moment of this book! I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who wants to be inspired! Get this book!!

I bought this book on a whim after being so moved by Kris's documentary. It has been a great gift to myself and my family! I read it with my mother and sister and it helps us open up, share, and support each other. (I am a one year survivor and my mother is a 20 year survivor) My copy is flagged so I can go back to the recipes and my favorite tips. Be warned- Kris has a great sense of humor, you will laugh, smile and /or chuckle. I love this book.

I bought this book for my mother in law who in currently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. After she received it, she called me crying, telling me that it was the best book that she had ever been given. She went out and bought copies for everyone she knew that had cancer. She said that it was the greatest gift she had been given since the diagnosis!

Kris' book is not just for canSer patients, it is for everyone trying to live life to its fullest. She concisely gives suggested strategies for creating a balanced, joyful, uplifting life experience. She distills enormous amounts of info into pearls of wisdom. If you need/want more detailed info, she tells you exactly where to go to find it. If you are a canSer babe or dude, this is the bible! Particularly for the newly diagnosed, this book reads like a manual to get you through the initial fog of a canSer diagnosis. Her nutrition chapter is a must-read to get you started on the path to health and well-being. I continue to be surprised at how much information I gleaned from her tips. Kris' book is a life attitude adjustment for us all! Rock on, canSer cowgirl!!

If you expect a detailed medical guide this is not the book for you. As a thyroid cancer survivor, this book fits the bill in the realm of "Humor". I think all of us can use a little of that whether you are going through cancer or someone you love. I wish this book would have been there for me 3 years ago. My prescription to any new person diagnosed with cancer is a two prong approach: #1 Educate - arm yourself with information so you can make the best decisions about your care. It also gives you a feeling of control when you need it most. #2 Humor - find ways to laugh through the process..otherwise you will just cry.

I'm sorry I have to disagree with the reviews here. I sent my Husband to pick up this book for me. He said they were flying off the shelf. I however feel like I was suckered out of my money by the hype. I have thyroid cancer and am looking for alternatives to traditional medicine. All I found in this book was the fluffy writing of a wistful Girl, and I consider myself a very spiritual open minded person. But I really don't need to know a pair of boots and lipstick will make me feel better. Many of the important topics are skimmed over such as diet and HOW (She) to actually beat cancer.
She talks about taking enzyme supplements with every meal and it being very important, but does not explain what they are or where to get them. She explains the 80/20 raw/cooked diet.. but does not tell you what cooked foods you can eat. Nor does she mention that they should not be eatin together. The book is also full of referances to other books. Like "Hey I could tell you what I learned but instead go buy this book, and this one and that one and so on and so on..". Her writings often come off manic and frenzied, like a bad infomercial. If you have the money to burn on buying this book than maybe like Kris Carr (An upper class Girl from New York) you also have enough money to buy many others, take master classes, travel, shop till you drop (as she recommends to heal ones soul) and drop thousands in Health Food Stores, as She did. Personally, I don't. My money would have been better spent on a serious book on Cancer diets. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-27 18:33:15 EST)

I have done alot of work with the Komen Foundation and have spent countless hours speaking to breast cancer survivors and those who hae just heard the dreaded word that changes their lives. Kris has done well with this book as it reaches out and touches those who may otherwise shrink in fea believing they are the "only ones" who feel the wa they do. Any book that can attract a diverse audience on this subject is worth it. There is a weakness or two, as it mostly speaks to thirty-something women, and it really doesn't get to the causes of cancer, which we now know can be overcome. Otherwise, for those who are already there, this is a necessary addition to their support networks. - E. Claverie, Editor, "Forget the Cres, Find the Cause, Books I and II"

Kris has such a truly amazing outlook on life. I myself do not have cancer, but do have family members going through it. This book is for everyone! I have read and reread mine several times and went back and ordered one for each of my close family memebers. You will not be disappointed with this book.

As someone who has lived in good health with cancer for nearly 20 years(I should have been dead 10 years ago)I can say that the author gives plenty of good information about what to do when diagnosed with cancer, but she certainly could have lost the cancer without losing her manners, her grace and her femininity. I can certainly do WITHOUT the profanity and what some readers are calling "irreverence."

This is a very well written book for anyone facing the challenge of cancer or part of the support team. There is a lot of humor which is so important. Some parts are very graffic but needed, some frustrating when you don't know that much about nutrition and when taking meds that would conflict with what is needed. All in all a good book. Thank you!

Awesome book, a little irreverent at times but a great resource for anyone recently diagnosed not just young women. Contains a guideline for developing a treatment plan and identifies a multiplicity of available resources. Answers alot of the questions a recently diagnosed person has and identifies both traditional and non traditional approaches to treatment of cancer. Wish something like this was around when I was diagnosed.

This was a great read for me after completing aggressive therapy for very advanced ovarian cancer. It touched on many of the things I'd gone through myself, bringing tears in remembrance and laughter as well...especially Kris's journey across America looking for alternative treatment. I had done the same thing. I tell everyone with cancer about it and refer it to friends of people who have cancer. It also has loads of good tips...a really good resource to have.

I really cannot review this book, because I bought it as a gift at the request of someone else, and I gave it to her without having opened it.

I purchased this book for my sister and myself both. We have been dealing with her husband, my brother-in-law's throat/lung cancer battle for over a year and she saw this book on TV and wanted to read it. She says it is WONDERFUL and highly recommends it to everybody, even if you are not going thru cancer or with someone who is. I will be reading it shortly myself.

This book is very well written. It is attractive not only for it's content but also visually. As a nurse and a woman in the demographic Kris Carr is writing about, I found it very meaningful and touching. I love all the tips about how to make treatment more "normal". This book is full of helpful resources and insights. I may not agree with all the tips and opinions but I give this book a hearty thumbs up!

Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips is a thought provoking and ultimately inspiring book. I've spent most of my life trying my best to avoid anything having to do with the big "C" and yet the title and design of this book compelled me to give it a peek. I was sold on page one. Kris Carr has had to change her priorities, look inside herself, and now she's sharing with us what she's learned. It's an eye opener for me. It's not depressing or morbid, but an affirmation of the beauty of life and for me personally, a reminder to stop, breathe, and look around. Not only would I recommend reading it, but I recommend it being shared with friends and discussed.

I ususally do not read books about illness and health calamities, but Kris Carr's book is an exception for a reason - as soon as I picked it up I was hooked. Her voice is clear, strong, funny, moving, and down right unnerving at times! It's truly a page turner, which is a funny thing to say about the book given its subject matter. I also think it is a book that anyone facing any kind of life threatening challenge or even a major life crisis will find helpful, reassuring, and yes, enjoyable.

What's great about this beautifully produced book is that it's not just for so-called female cancers, but for any woman with any kind of cancer - even the kind that usually hits 60-something men. Once you've read the clinical books on cancer, pick this one up. It'll give you all sorts of fantastic tips on everything from handling losing your hair to "cancercations." Best of all, you'll feel less alone.

When I first came across this book, I was intrigued by the title: "What on earth is sexy about cancer?" I wondered. I only had to read a couple of pages to get the answer to my question: the thousands of wonderful, beautiful, gorgeous, loving, caring, brilliant, crazy, sexy women who are diagnosed with cancer every year. Question answered! With this book Ms. Carr is lifting the veil on cancer; and it's high time. So many of us tip toe around the subject of cancer. The irony is that everyone is in some way affected by the disease or will be at some point in their lives. In this book, Ms. Carr, in a delightfully crazy, sexy way shares her own incredible journey while at the same time providing "cancer babes" as she calls them, tips on how to tackle their own diagnosis. The book leaves no stone unturned--there are tips for recovering from the shock of an initial diagnosis, on getting the very best medical care possible, dealing with friends, family, dating and fertility. There's even an informative and interesting chapter on nutrition and exercise. Throughout the book, Ms. Carr tells her story and shares her wisdom and experiences with honesty and laugh-out-loud humor. There's an entire chapter on retail therapy! You've got to read this book for yourselves! No review can do it justice. Read it, and I promise it will leave a smile on your face and create a lightness in your soul that will be impossible to shake. And this book is NOT just for folks dealing with a cancer diagnosis; not by any means. It didn't take me long to realize that it's about so much more than dealing with a cancer diagnosis, it's about facing and overcoming any adversity that life throws at us. But, by all means, if you do know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, don't hem and haw and be at a loss for words, give them this book!
