Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body

This atlas includes full-color photographs of actual cadaver dissections instead of idealized illustrations, to accurately and realistically represent anatomical structures. Often used by students as an alternative or supplement to their lab experience, and as an introduction to exactly what they should see before they dissect, as well as a study aid before practical/identification exams.

(Hide Review...)  best resource there is for gross lab

while netter is a classic and almost every med student has one, this book is much more realistic because they are actual cadavers. on your practical, the arteries will not be red, the veins won't be blue and the nerves won't be yellow. its a big help in the lab and studying for your practicals

Excellent. Like having a cadaver in the library with you, without the smell! Great photos of the most meticulous dissections you will ever find, labeled well.

I used this in medical school and it saved me. The dissections are amazing quality and are truly a form of art in themselves. I sold it off as a poor medical student but now that I am an attending ObGyn will be buying it again to teach my residents anatomical landmarks. If you use this for med school hold on to it for your clerkships - review relevant anatomy before every surgical rotation and use this book to help. You will find yourself coming to this again and again.

This book is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it for any anatomy student with lab practicals. Rather than having to find a partner, drive to the school, and sit in the lab with a bone box, I was able to study by myself in my own living room. I would not be without it!

Everyone should buy this. It's way better than Netter's and is great to review before and after a gross anatomy lab.

(Hide Review...)  best atlas, has nothing on netter's
Reviewer Permalink
everyone raves about netters but last i checked the human body was actually a confusing mass of vessles, nerves and muscles and not picture perfect. yokochi's photographs help you get ready for any lab practical, show multiple views of everything and it's really great b/c if the axillary artery shows up every time the thorax is being shown, even if it's just off to the side in the arm, it's labeled every time, from every angle. that's the best part, multiple views and nothing is left out just because it doesn't fit into the section, it it's there, it's labeled.

This book is a med student's best friend. I was having a difficult time learning anatomy from Netter, and hated spending time in the cadaver lab, so this book really saved me. I also like how the labels are numbered, with the answers on the bottom of the page, so you can cover them and quiz yourself.

A very good atlas with real life picture. Great resources for any student in cadaver labs. As always be wary that there are anatomical variations so certain things may not be in the exact spot in the picture. I recommend it.

This my first foray into a photographic anatomy book and I was quite pleased, that is not to say it did not have its issues.

The first thing you will notice with this book is, it's very high quality and attractive. It's a beautiful cover, sturdy material and the pages are thick and rigid. There are few, and for most people, no accidental tears that can occur with thinner pages.

The content itself was very thorough, but not complete. While nearly all structures in the body are shown, not all are labeled, which can easily lead to some confusion when trying to classify it, two examples I recall are the labial veins or in certain pictures identifying the maxillary vs transverse facial artery. Basic mistakes, but they'll happen if you need this book to learn. Of course, the pictures are so clear, if you have a schematic atlas, the labeling may not even be necessary, but for me I prefer everything labeled. On the same topic, they add at least one schematic representation of what structure they are representing (not near the depth of a separate atlas though), and when a secondary visual is needed they would highlight with paint. Examples of drawings, trajectorial lines of the femoral head, General architecture of a synovial joint, Meningeal coverings of the spinal cord.

Overall, this book gives a great understanding of how an actual human body will look but could be difficult to learn from; it's best to have an idealized view of it, such as Netter's or Grant's.

(Hide Review...)  YOU NEED THIS BOOK
Reviewer Permalink
I'm currently a first-year medical student, and I am telling you, if you need an atlas either for anatomy lecture or lab (especially lab), YOU NEED THIS BOOK. It is a cover-to-cover, full-color, exhaustive, and thorough review of every square inch of the body. If you are enrolled in a course which involves actual cadavers, chances are your body will look a bit different (these are, after all, professional dissections), but it is GREAT for looking at relationships and quizzing yourself objectively. If you're in an anatomy course (either professional, graduate or undergraduate), you should really get this book.

I really like looking this over before I go into the Anatomy lab. It gives you a great representation of how things would appear if one was performing a gross dissection. However, I personally like using this with another color atlas because it can be confusing studying material in here for the first time. I like using another atlas that color codes different parts of the body to make it easier to visualize. Either way a great buy!

Real pics of a cadaver that will help simulate the real thing, when you cannot attend lab. Great supplement to use along with some of the illustrated(drawn) books.

As a first year med student I found this book extremely helpful for Gross Anatomy (at least the first third); the pictures were great. Maybe a little too perfect to prepare for the practical, but nevertheless, this book is a wonderful resource.

the atlas is good and descriptive. It is helpful and detailed for clinical use. For learning though there are better atlas, like the netter atlas. this is not to say that this atlas is bad. If this atlas is used in compliment to the netter atlas, learning is easier.

(Hide Review...)  Not Perfect but Essential

This atlas of anatomy is an excellent addition to your anatomy textbooks. You get actual cadaver photos instead of stylized drawings of the 'typical' human. This atlas cannot be used without an accompanying textbook such as a Grey's Anatomy, but this can really make a difference for a practical. If people damage bodies and you cannot find the structure, this atlas allows you to pinpoint it with accuracy. It does have a few omissions here and there, but compared to the other atlases, this is much better.
