At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them. Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories. Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust. |

Most cookbooks I've seen for diabetics call for all sorts of "fake" ingredients that I find totally unappetizing. This book, however, uses mostly "real" ingredients and has recipes that the whole family can enjoy. One of the horrifying things about being a diabetic is being "different", having to eat "different" foods and substitutes for the real thing. The recipes in this book sound really appetizing and the pictures make me want to run to the market so that I can start cooking. There are even dessert items like Double-Berry Muffins that don't call for any strange ingredients. It even gives you a choice of using a real egg or a fat-free, cholesterol-free egg product if you have a cholesterol problem. I admit I haven't read ALL the recipes yet, but of all the ones I HAVE read, the ingredients are readily available in regular supermarkets. No special trips to the health food store required. I would highly recommend this cookbook for diabetic who, like me, don't like to feel deprived and don't like to eat a lot of fake ingredients. (They give me gastric problems!)

Wonderful hardcover cookbook. Very useful information not found in any of the other diabetic cookbooks. Great recipes and I really like the illustrations. We're making the caramel cheesecake for Thanksgiving. Easy 1,2,3 system to track carb levels.

The recipes in this book might be fine for some people, but the majority do not work for me. I do best on a fairly low carbohydrate diet. Plus most of the carbs in these recipes are simple starches and sugars. Lots of pasta, potatoes, sugar, white flour; lots of sweet corn, sweet potatoes. Basically all the stuff my physician told me to avoid. And all stuff that shoots my blood sugar way up. So while the recipes are tasty I really have to pick out the few I can eat.
Also annoying is the exclusion of carbohydrate counts. Instead we get the old exchange system which I don't think is used so much any more. If you can eat this kind of food then you will probably find this a tasty and useful book. Just be sure to test after some of these meals, as some of them put my blood sugar way up. Just finding out I have type 2 diabetes I wanted to do the 'right' thing. I looked at lots of different books but decided on the Betty Crockers Diabetes Cookbook. It is full of really helpfull information on diabetes as well as all the great recipies. Very colourful and shows that you can still enjoy lots of good food!
100% pleased with the book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-10 00:35:45 EST)

Nice cookbook. Came in good condition, at least one inside stain but it came promptly and was in the condition I expected. The nutritional labels, like what are on can labels, is a good idea and makes it easy to see what the serving size is and the calorie and nutritional values are.

When I found out I had type 2 Diabetes, I freaked out on how to change my cooking habits to fit my needs as well as meals for my husband. I found this book and as the title explains...its as Easy as 1 2 3. Have enjoyed the receipes and lucky for my sake so has my husband. Now if I could just get the exchanges to work as easy as this cookbook, I would be well on my way to make cooking an easier task.

Loving the cookbook so far. There was concern that I was diabetic so I bought this book to get some ideas for diabetic recipes. I found out I am not diabetic but the recipes are great for anyone. They are healthy and flavorful and a big plus is that my family enjoys them! Thanks for a great cookbook.

I received this cookbook as a gift so I can't offend the giver, but it is by far one of the worst cookbooks that a diabetic could possibly use. Not that it isn't pretty, and not that it doesn't contain many luscious looking dishes, but almost every recipe calls for either sugar or flour or other sugary or starchy ingredients - all catagories included, not just desserts - none of which a diabetic should ever eat. The somewhat confusing use of 'carbohydrate choices' is further dangerous, because one - and only one - 'carb choice' is worth 15 grams of actual carb and by combining several foods from this book into a single meal plan, one will be way over the limit for safety. The menu plans in the back of the book prove this - add up the number of carbohydrate choices in any one day's meal plan, and you get between 15 and 17 carb choices. Multiply that by 15 and you are looking at nearly 300 grams of carb a day. What people don't realize (because they have not been told by doctors and 'diabetes educators' who do not for some reason, continue their education in metabolism) is that the word SUGAR should be substituted for any carbohydrate. In fact, The American Diabetes Association is still using decades-old protocols which encourage huge amounts of carbs in a 'diabetic diet' that invariably fails to manage the disease. A safe and sensible diet for a diabetic either on or off insulin, must restrict sugar and starch of any kind because within minutes of hitting the bloodstream it all turns to pure glucose and out of control insulin production - the cause of diabetes. Feeding yourself more sugar only hastens complications, and they can be very bad indeed. Virtually all good low carbohydrate diets restrict carbs (sugar!) to 50 or less per day - not 50 'choices' but 50 actual carbs. I myself, a diabetic, cannot tolerate more than 30 or 40 carbs a day to maintain decent blood glucose control, and less is better if I can do it. When a disease such as this has the potential to rob one of their eyesight, kidneys, limbs, and life itself if not properly managed - it is ludicrous to demand that one be allowed daily potatoes and pastas and cereals and sugary desserts. Anyone wishing to help themselves try and maintain safe blood glucose levels before it's too late should instead purchase 'Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution' - a Type 1 diabetic himself, he has helped millions prolong their lives with proper diet. He doesn't sell anything, he doesn't do anything but be virtually the best diabetes doctor in this country. Another extremely informative and widely respected book is 'Good Calories' Bad Calories' by Gary Taubes. Other resources are all over the internet. One's life is worth the effort to do the research.

I waited anxiously for the cookbook to arrive and I was extremely disappointed when it did. I did not find a single recipe I will ever use for my family. I have found extremely good recipes free on the internet and will continue to use the internet as a source for tasty healthy recipes rather than this book.

I love this book. It is the one book I recommend to newly diagnosed diabetecs because it counts your choices for you. My non-diabetics friends are always asking for recipes from this book. I have a number of other diabetes books, buying this one because we like our Betty Crocker Red Book so much. Easy to make snacks and desserts.

My husband is diabetic and I have been trying hard to find recipes that are good and quick and easy. I FINALLY found a GREAT cookbook that does that! (leave it to Betty Crocker!) I grew up with the same Betty Crocker cookbook that was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and so on... and now Betty has done it again! These recipes are wonderful, and easy to use! I just wish there were more Diabetic cookbooks by Betty Crocker! This is a GREAT book to have!

The Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook is just as fantastic as the regular Betty Crocker Cookbook. The pictures are mouth-watering, the recipes are easy to follow, and they taste wonderful! My husband, who is diabetic, found it hard to believe they were from a diabetes cookbook. If you are diabetic and buy just one cookbook, buy this one!! If you don't have diabetes but are trying to eat healthy, this is the book for you. I recommend it whole heartedly!

Nothing at all wrong with the finished food. But the book is only good if you are rich and have plenty of time to shop. The women who presented the meals obviously fit into both categories. If they were just regular people (like the name, Betty Crocker, is supposed to represent) they would not have said that these are quick and easy to prepare.

When I was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago, I rushed out and bought all sorts of diabetic cookbooks. I tried recipe after recipe and gave it up as a waste of time, as the food was tasteless, blah and aimed mainly at Type 2s. Then I tried Betty Crocker - PHENOMENAL! The food has taste, doesn't worry overmuch about fat (which can be corrected for with insulin), and impresses the heck out of my non-diabetic friends! Who needs more than that? And they mean it when they say that it's simple - you don't have to be a chef to make these recipes, a knife and a whisk is usually all that's needed. YAY! I make a point of trying a new recipe every week, and the list of 'must make' favorites keeps growing!

This is a good cookbook with good information but a lot of the recipes use ingredients that I can't use as they are unavailable in our area or very expensive. Having diabetes is expensive on its own and the food should be simple and easy to put together. Diabetes takes a lot of time to manage and when you are just beginning with the process and looking for help - this is not the book for you. Perhaps after things have settled down and I am more used to dealing with diabetes, it will more useful. If you want truly unique recipes, try this. If you want ordinary food that is good for you, try something else.

My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He had to change his eating habits immediately. This book made it so easy to come up with tasty recipes. He loved everything I cooked and never felt he was missing out on the "bad" foods. I really liked the insert telling us how many starches etc. in each dish.

Maybe I have too many cook books, but I didn't find this any different than any other book that gives nutritional breakdowns. Many of the recepies had too many carbs &/or fats. Among other things, I was hoping for interesting ways to make diabetic cookies and other goodies without fruit. Many of the ingredients are not available in ordinary stores. I found it ho hum and not worth the price.

DELICIOUS RECIPES. I AM A WEIGHT WATCHER MEMBER AND THE RECIPES IN THIS COOKBOOK ARE REFRESHING. I HAVE MADE MORE RECIPES FROM THIS COOKBOOK THAN I HAVE MADE FROM MY TWO WEIGHT WATCHER COOKBOOKS COMBINED! EASY TO FIGURE WW POINTS...NORMAL INGREDIENTS...UP TO DATE. MY HUSBAND, MY DIABETIC MOTHER IN LAW AND MY FATHER IN LAW HAVE ENJOYED ALL THE MEALS FROM THIS RECIPE BOOK. A MUST HAVE ON YOUR SHELF! This book is already working! I've only had it for 2.5 weeks and I'm seeing results. I must say that I am also loving ' the T_r_u_t_h about C_a_f_f_e_i_n_e `by K_u_s_h_n_e_r.

I originally purchased this cookbook for my father who is a diabetic that loves to cook. He loves the recipies in there and told me about them. I'm not diabetic but am very conscious of what and how I cook for the family, genetics being any indication for our future. I purchased one for myself. It is good, the recipes give you the nuitritional information and the carbohydrate counts for each one. It has a variety of foods in there to please just about every taste. The steps are easy to follow and you don't have to be a gourmet to accomplish a satisfying dish.

I bought this cookbook as a companion to one of American Diabetes' Month of Meals editions. As with Month of Meals, it offers an excellent overview into understanding and managing diabetes. The text is written in layman's terms that are easy to understand. Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is structured into food groups, about like other cookbooks. There are plenty of illustrations and you don't have to be a master chef to follow its directions. Unlike Month of Meals, you are on your own when mapping your meals for the day. However, this is a minor issue. The main point is diabetics don't have to sacrifice fine food to stay alive and this cookbook makes the point.

I found this to be one of the best resources for recipes for diabetics. The recipes were easy to follow-not to fancy-every day food. The carb count was well within the ADA standards. I would highly recomend it for new diabetics and for those people counting carbs on their diets.

As usual when it comes to Betty Crocker cook books all recipes come out great. This book is no exception.
