The book has clear layout, and is cross-referenced by 14ed of Grant's Dissector. It's definitely lacking in basic explanations which other atlases have, but it's nice, clean and visually vivid. I relied on this almost exclusively, along with the dissector in learning anatomy.

Such a GREAT supplement to the Anatomy Coloring book. It's better to color the coloring book using the same color scheme as this book. Everything is big, colorful, plenty of labels, and very helpful for learning anatomy. It's now my "bible" for school.

Nice illustrations, but the organization just is not logical. It is difficult to find what you want and if you're looking for a specific muscle, don't you dare rely on the index, because it probably won't be there. The muscle attachment illustrations are not in the same sections as the muscles themselves. I would recommend Theime's Atlas of Anatomy instead of Netters if you are looking for a better organized and clearer anatomy text.

We use Netter's atlas for anatomy lab and in our own personal studying. The atlas has excellent cut-aways and has proven to be incredibly helpful when pulling all of the information together for exams.

If you're taking anatomy, you need this book...period. Very good illustrations of all the structures. I would recommend getting the hard cover since mine is falling apart slightly.

I couldn't have passed my anatomy test without this book. I like the way that each diagram peels away a part so you can see the underlying layers: it's a great tool in seeing and understanding where the muscles lie. The pictures are clearly readable and are of a decent size (inlcuding the text).

From what I have been able to gather online from the publisher (Elsevier), the Professional Edition is the only one that is supposed to come with the CD, which is purported to contain "over 80 of the most important anatomy illustrations from the book to use in presentations and lectures."
View the differences between the editions: Professional 4th Edition: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn=9781416036999 Soft Cover 4th Edition: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn=9781416033851 It seems to be $60 more (at least, depending on where you look) for just for the CD (and the Hardcover opposed to the Soft Cover). The Professional Edition is more like a Reference book for a library, but hey maybe you need that. The 4th Ed. Soft Cover still comes with the ability to log onto "www.netteranatomy.com" for "Ninety plates from the book as well as a powerful and varied bank of ancillary material, unique to this atlas, are available online" through that Netter Anatomy Website. Through I'm fairly certain that the Professional Edition also comes with that ability. Also in response to the earlier post, the Interactive Atlas of Human Anatomy 3.0 CD only comes with the 3rd Edition, not the newest 4th Edition. Here is the link just to that 3rd Edition CD: Interactive Atlas of Human Anatomy 3.0, 3rd Edition: http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn=9781929007141 Hope this helps. Frank Netter, M.D. created approximately 20,000 paintings of the human body and provided countless medical students with an invaluable educational resource. He can be credited for teaching multiple generations of doctors worldwide. Although he is now deceased, his legacy continues to provide students with intricate knowledge that only a physician and gifted artist could have given. I am thrilled to have purchased what I consider an educational necessity for such a reasonable price.

As an Anatomy Masters student, I highly recommend Netters for anyone who is taking an advanced anatomy course especially graduate students and medical students. This book has wonderfully detailed pictures that aid in your studying, and the online Netters is riddled with study hints, image downloads and has really improved my study guide capabilities. This book may be a bit advanced for most undergraduate courses (there are cheaper ones out there with everything you need), but will definitely cover all the material you need to know.

This text has quality, picture that will help you understand gross anatomy. If you want a clinical atlas this is not the one for you. It does have the MRI's, CT etc. However, it does the the job for the student and helps for provide a greater understanding of gross anatomy.

It's got fully detailed and realistic drawings.Helps get your bearings on human anatomy and it's sections and layers helps you to get to know exactly what you need. Easy to understand beautifully drew. The 2006 edition includes new drawings from his "aprentices" specially Carlos Machado, and new clinical cases,x-rays,etc. if you intend to buy a netter, and you wonder if it's worth buying a 2004 you better save some money which you won't regret. It's easier to understand and its sections are better placed then sobotta's. But if you prefer real corpses pictures you might preffer yokochi's.

This book is amazing. I've only been through some of the sections, but the pictures are so detailed that it takes time to observe each one in its entirety. My boyfriend and I are both pre-med and at first I thought I would buy a book for our entertainment only, but after I read many reviews of med students saying they used this book, I realized how important it would be to get this sooner rather than wait. Even if you are only interested in anatomy, this book has over 500 detailed, labeled pictures. Netter was a medical and artistic genius who meticulously drew and labeled each picture fully. This is a must have for those thinking about med school.

I'm in a surgical technology program and needed a good anatomy book. I really appreciate the detail and accuracy of the illustrations. The only drawback to the book is the fact that it's paper back. The very first time I opened it to check it out, the binding cracked and the pages began to separate. I had opened it gently and didn't even try to flatten it. The binding crack was at a different place than where I opened the book. My instructor has the same book and the same problem.

This review is from the perspective of a first year medical student in Gross Anatomy. I own both Atlas of Human Anatomy: With Netteranatomy.com (Netter Basic Science) and Grant's Atlas of Anatomy, and what I've found is that they really cannot be compared. They are both 5 stars if you use them properly.
Grant's Atlas shines when it is in the dissection room with you. The "good" drawings were created by professional medical artists using exquisitely dissected specimens. The organization of the atlas is superficial to deep, just as if you are dissecting a body as you are flipping through the pages. In the drawings for example, superficial muscles are reflected to see deeper muscles, but the superficial muscles are still there, allowing you to see relationships between superficial and deep muscles (Netter doesn't do this in favor of simplification. Earlier I said "good" drawings. These are the "classic dissection illustrations" that really make this book special (Dorothy Foster Chubb's illustrations are at least as good as Netter's, but other less skilled skilled artists also contributed illustrations to this atlas). There are also poor quality schematic illustrations that can be helpful as a tool of simplification. There are also plenty of CT and MRI images since these have become so essential to the practice of medicine. I should also mention that there is text associated with each image and tables of origins, insertions, and innervations that are also helpful, and there is a CD included with 300 USMLE style questions. These are nice but Netter is better for this type of studying. Netter's atlas shines for at home study away from your cadaver. It is more high-yield than Grant's atlas and makes for easier and faster learning. Grant, because of its thoroughness for dissection's sake, can be a little bit of a chore to get through when cramming for a test. Netter's atlas is able to do this because it does not try to be a dissection atlas. It's drawings are too simplified for that kind of work, designed to give you only the core information that makes it impossibly easy to learn and retain the most crucial anatomical relationships. Also, this atlas, unlike Grant's, has no text associated with the figures. Instead, you must go to netteranatomy.com. This website is absolutely priceless, containing bulleted high-yield fact, mnemonics, great tables, case studies, exams, and Netter plates that can have labels turned on and off. Also, the associated flash cards are very helpful to because, in addition to naming structures, it gives numerous high yield facts associated with the structures. And you can take them anywhere. So, in short, Grant's atlas and Netter's atlas are both excellent. Each can stand on its own, but they really do compliment each other; Grant's is the best while dissecting, and Netter's is best for studying for tests and USMLE. This anatomy atlas comes in pretty handy. The pictures are usually very descriptive and detailed, and even though they are illustrated rather than photographed, they are quite accurate. This is a good atlas for the beginner anatomist. I am using it as a study aid for my college anatomy course and I feel like it's doing the job. Compared to other atlases I've looked at, it is pretty good at giving different angles of perspective of the anatomical structures depicted, which makes applying the information to a 3D form easier.

If you are looking to SUPPLEMENT your anatomy text, this is the book for you. The illustrations are clear and very easy to understand. There is very little verbiage on the systems or structures making it almost impossible to pass Gross Anatomy with this book alone. There are a lot of alternative anatomy atlas' on the market, but you wont go wrong with this one!

It's a great book but after a while i got tired of it not having any text. I checked out Gray's Anatomy for Students at my library and I'm definitely going to purchase it soon, sadly ... I have sold this book already, if you're like me and need more than just visuals, get the best of both worlds with Gray's Anatomy for Students.

Netter definitely makes anatomy as well as a bit of radiology easier to visualize and remember with his colorful pictures, diagrams, and radiological scans. It is organized very well. May not have enough detail for your tests sometimes, but you can easily find 90% of the things you need to know in this book.

I started taking Anatomy and Physiology this semester and figured that Gray's anatomy was the book to buy as an addendum to my textbook. The classic text is great, but not for me. Netter's offers less text (practically none) and loads of detailed (VERY detailed) artwork. That compounded with the idea that my professor uses the same book in med school got me to buy it.
The Gray's book looks great on the shelf. The Netter's will likely need to be replaced sooner or later because I have been using it on a daily basis! Its a great book and I recommend it to other med / nursing students. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-03-26 02:04:59 EST)

when i was in medschool the netter series was the most coveted anatomy "picture book" but least attainable (due to price as well as size,
kind of like carrying around the worldbook encyclopedia series...) now it all is in a single well organized book. In pvt primary care practice i turn to it several times a week i highly recommend it (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-10 13:16:51 EST)

I teach Supplemental Instruction for Medical Gross Anatomy and have found Netter to be very helpful both for teaching my students and for me own review of the material. The Netter images are brightly colored, which may not be true to life but makes the initial learning of structures easier. The orginization of the book is also very easy to use with our with out consulting the index. For me netter is by far the best anatomy atlas and if you were only going to buy one I'd get this one. It does not replace the cadaver lab, but its clean colorful pictures are great for learning where things should be and where to look for things. This is a great tool!

Keep in mind this is an atlas. There is no text explaining anything (the only text is labels on the pictures). The pictures are fabulous, and this is very useful for an anatomy course. I couldn't get through the class without it, it is very helpful. I highly recommend it. Just, make sure you take good notes in class if you're more of a text person than a picture person.

I like this atlas a lot and is very useful for my gross anatomy course. However, I have noticed that some of the circulatory system is lacking. I can be difficult to find diagrams that easily identify certain things, particularly in reference to the veins and a little bit with the lymphatics. All in all, I like this book a lot and probably would not rather a different one. Also, the CD is very helpful if you want to set up quizes for yourself.

You've got to have a Netter's Atlas on hand. You never know when you'll need it. Even if you are well out of medical school, well cocooned in your tight little sub-specialty, you still need Netter. You never know when your elderly neighbor is going to knock on your door and ask you precisely which muscle in her back hurts when she stands up, just to pick a random example.
But especially for learning the anatomy in the first place, both the structure and function, there is nothing that compares. The level of detail is astounding, the care and thought put into every illustration is staggering. And you really should have the newest edition, edited in part by the great Dr. Hanson from the University of Rochester, with over 10,000 anatomical terms, and many illustrations now correlated with MRI images. You know what I did? I gave my old Netter's to my nephew and bought the new one. He's into science, has kid's books on anatomy. Why don't you do that? Give your old Netter's, cadaveric juice stains and all, to a young eager kid, be a little ceremonial about it, then get on Amazon and buy the newest edition. Then email me and say, "thanks, you were right about that." (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-11-04 02:15:39 EST)

I remembered that when we did dissections in the anatomy class throughout the anatomy classes of the 1st 2 years, one student per table (who do not want to touch the corpse) would be responsible to bring and hold the Netter for the entire lesson. Netter really helped us a lot! I have browsed many other anatomy atlas and have not yet found one that is better than Netter. Although some atlases contain real pictures, they are not as clear as that in Netter! I can say, "Netter + Moore" is the golden combination for anatomy!
When I studied neuroanatomy after finishing the anatomy, Netter still helped me a lot! Netter rocks! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-09-05 02:43:02 EST)

If "a picture could say a thousand words", this book is it. I am an LPN turned Medical Coder. The book has made Anatomy `come alive'. I struggled through 2 anatomy/physiology classes in the above 2 programs & still did not feel like I understood. If you are a visual learner, this book is a must. It does have to be supplemented with written text as others have said, I use a google search when my textbooks are not enough. To determine if this book would be helpful, think of it like this, if you put together a big entertainment center, which would you find more helpful: diagrams of where each screw, nut & bolt gets attached to what piece, OR by reading a description of each piece & the description of the piece it gets attached to. For me its diagrams, so the book for me was well worth the cost ($69 + tax at Barnes & Noble, 3rd edition, soft cover).
