21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha's Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha's Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz's new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day "MasterFast," which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

  • Maintenance plans
  • Dozens of easy, delicious recipes
  • Real-life tips
  • An extensive glossary of terms
  • A guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and "live" juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body's systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn't just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detox diet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.

I was going to look further into this program. I read an article in the November 2008 issue of Essence magazine. I then checked out the price of the book and kit but was told to read the reviews first. I'd like to thank those of you that gave an honest opinion and kept me from wasting my money.

I bought the book first & once I was mentally ready I bought the plan from Ebay (much cheaper than from the actual site.) I stuck with it for 21 days & I lost 15 lb. It has been 1 month, today, since my 21st day & I am maintaining & I have lost more on my own. This book/plan altered my lifestyle. I cleansed my body, mind, closet, fridge & pantry. I am a procrastinator too - go figure.

My friend just finished & lost 16 lb. If you are ready you will succeed. I didn't do any enemas, colonics, etc. I did what I could afford & had time for. I treated myself w/something ea week. I did the detox bath (very inexpensive) & I had 2 massages. I didn't juice anything either. I just drank what I bought..I did make the pureed soups during week two. I just boiled and used my food processor.

I also think the book is pretty straight forward - meaning the author knows that most people can not follow nor afford the plan like those people that actually go to Martha's Vineyard Detox Center & have all of the resources provided to them. Maybe going to MVineyard would have helped me lose the extra 6 lbs??? Who cares, I lost 15 and I got past the plateau. I am working out (yes, I actually dusted off an exercise dvd & haven't stopped since 8/2).

I agree with K Copper in the fact that I do what I can, I did find a "green drink" at a health food store and it had the green & berry flavor, trying it alone I could hardly choke it down but now I mix it with crystal lite green tea & raspberry flavored on the go packet, it taste much better, & I also found in the natural section by pacific, a veggie low sodium broth for my soup, I so far have been doing it for 3 days and I lost 4.5 pounds, I feel so much better, you do what you can do.

First, I'm not a dieter.
Second, I don't do diets!!

I didn't do this just for the weightloss. I wanted to do this to feel better. Today is my 21st day of the detox and tomorrow I start the break.

My wife and I decided on this program after much research. We read both the posoitive and the negative. Having read a large portion of the reviews here, I found it odd how evenly split they were. Those that panned this program all had a common theme, they all wanted this quick easy weightloss program and didn't really see what this program is really about; detoxifying your body and feeling better. Remember, weight loss is a side benefit of this program and should not be the main reason you do this.

Yes, the program was tough at time. My healing crisis lasted over two days, but I got through it. The one thing (of many)that I learned is this: Our association and fixation on food and eating is over 95% mental and that's the hardest thing to overcome. While following the nutritional guidance, physically, I was never hungry, but mentally, I missed eating and chewing but I really wasn's hungry. Once you get past that, the rest is easy. I'm happy to report that as of today, I have lost 26 lbs and my wife 25 lbs. I still have some more weight to lose, but I feel great and I'm ready to start eating with a different perspective and pay much more attention to what I put in my body.

This program may not be for everyone, but if you can maintain you dedication and remember why you're doing it in the first place, you can do it. As for the colonics, when you see what you have hiding in your colon, just sitting there rotting, then you'll have a whole new appreciation for how colon cancer develops. If you skip that and the enemas, your missing out on a major component of this program.

So far on the program about a week and have lost about 9 pounds, I am not going to lie and tell you this diet/detox is easy, but it does work. I had my first colonic today and I didn't care for it very much and skeptical about getting another one, but on a good note I have had a little more energy, finally getting my cleaning caught up, and the pounds are shedding away fast. The book is very informative, full of information on healthy living and modern up to date scientific facts. I definitely recommend the asian spinach soup recipe that is found at the end of the book. It is very flavorful, even if you are not on a detox this is still very tasty. Also you can drink as much of your favorite tea (non caffienated) as you want which has been really nice. The hunger pangs have been hard during the first few days, even though the book claims that you won't feel hungry. I have felt a little less hungry towards the end of the week. A lot of the people that gave it bad reviews have never tried it so I wouldn't let their negativity effect your judgement in trying out the plan. So far it's been alot of fun, and I hope to see more results as I continue.

I have no doubt that if one followed all the author's suggestions and bought all her supplements this plan would work. However unless you have a lot of time , (to get colonics and give yourself enemas) as well as money (to buy all the additional products you need to follow the daily menu plan) then I do not think this plan is for you.

I did this cleanse because a friend of mine recommended it and it is one of the best things I've ever done for my body. I did it for 15 days, and yes, I lost 15lbs, but more importantly than the weight I lost my body felt the best it has possibly ever felt.

I've read some of the other reviews, people said it was disgusting or they were hungry all the time, and I should say that I did not follow the regimen to the letter. I bought Naked Juice instead of Martha's Vineyard's juices, I used supplements that I liked, I did a Yogic intestinal wash (Laghoo shankhaprakshalana) instead of enemas, I added a pinch of salt to soups I made that were too bitter, and I ate soups at restaurants when I went out with friends. I think in order to keep from failing you have to allow yourself some wiggle room. The end result was amazing ... my friends all said my skin was glowing, my mood improved, my energy level increased, I wanted to exercise, and I felt fantastic in my body. And when I did start eating again, everything tasted SOOO GOOD! I enjoyed food on a level I never knew was possible.

If I'd followed the cleanse exactly my results could only have been better, but the way I followed it I didn't get hungry, I didn't feel deprived, it wasn't disgusting, and I still got all the benefits. I highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to improve their health, and the bonus is you'll get an improved relationship with your body and with food.

To start - it sounds great. Lots of healthy fruits, veggies... reality is it is so disgusting! And they never really tell you what to do. There are clues throughout the book - but you really have to look for them. A friend did this diet and she looks unbelievable and feels unbelievable. After 2 days my gag reflex wouldn't stop. The upside is that any other way of eating to benefit your health after this one is pure bliss! I haven't cheated on my new diet in 3.5 weeks. Just thinking about the Diet detox keeps me on the straight and narrow!-

I read this book over a weekend and did incorporate a lot of its principles into my daily eating. I also learned a lot about juicing, nutrients, the importance of water, and the detox process in general. The title is an eye catcher but not the thrust of the book. I really liked the content more than the title, which is a tad misleading.

This book changed my life, gave me back the vitality of my youth, increased my sense of well being, helped me feel connected to the universe in a spiritual way. Everyone who sees me asks what i have done. I tell them I got rid of toxins in my body, that my taste preferences changed so I no longer like most foods i loved in the past, and that i now am on 90% fresh, raw, organic fruits and vegetables and feel wonderful. While there may be many ways of achieving this state, this book was so efficient for me that I recommend it to everyone.

(Hide Review...)  Awesome DETOX Diet - based on nutrition, It Really Works!!
Reviewer Permalink
1st things 1st !! The "21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet is a DETOX diet, NOT a fad diet for losing weight.

After a successful detox at Dr. Roni DeLuz's Detox Center, an author by the name of James Hester saw value in marketing it as such, after he himself lost a pound each day on her detox process. A maintenance plan is included for lifestyle change not only to keep the weight off, but to gradually go back to other foods and to make detoxification part of your permanent lifestyle change.

The "official" website is http://www.marthasvineyarddietcenter.com/id1.html
I've found better pricing for the individual products at www.vitacost.com and www.vitaminshoppe.com and here at www.amazon.com as well.

This detox diet is a way to lose toxins AND weight, ... and it really works! I know because I'm on the diet now, and I follow the posts made at the support group website: http://groups.google.com/group/21-pounds-in-21-days?hl=en. Many successful people stay connected to help others go on to following the maintenance diet and the ongoing "maintenance diet" listserve as well.

The book is sound nutritionally. It is certainly not the only book a person needs to read to understand detox and nutrition, as the subject is so broad. What this book is, is an overview of detoxifying the body, and a sharing of what Dr. DeLuz does at her facility in Martha's Vineyard. I think it was a wonderful thing she's done, to make a detailed scheduled plan accessible to the public, many of whom would not be able to afford to check-in! There are some errors and confusion in the book, and going to the website above will help in sorting out the details. Also a google listserve can be joined to get daily support from others on the diet.

A Detox diet means that it is for detoxification of toxins that we intake from our air, water, food, environment. Toxins attach to our fat. Lose the toxins, lose the fat. Toxins affect our ability to think, see clearly, breathe deeply, slow down our digestive system, cause allergies, fatigue, auto-immune diseases. The list is endless.

This book starts with explaining all these toxins. Once you read how prevalent they are and how badly your body is affected, you WILL want to cleanse your body! This will be a difficult change for many who may not be able to give up their addictions to coffee, alcohol, junk food, dairy, pizza, pain pills, etc., but then only you can decide whether you actually want to become healthier, ... or not.

The book then goes on to explain that green vegetables (not fruits or protein foods) are the foods that help to pull out the toxins. It is a 21 day commitment to cleanse your body using vegetables in easily digestive forms. (This book does not promote vegetarianism.)

21 days is what it takes to create a new habit of eating. And most importantly, with each consecutive day that you stay on the cleansing diet, the cleansing reaches deeper and deeper into your organs. If unable to stay on for 21 days, multiple weekend or one week cleanses are recommended.

There are instructions on how to make the juices and purees and which high ORAC value veggie powdered drinks to purchase. There is no chewing allowed! This is to enable your digestive system to take a break and heal. You will learn what supplements and services that will help clean your digestive system, and help move these toxins out, such as enemas, gallbladder and kidney cleanses that you can do yourself. Colonics, massages, seaweed wraps are optional, but will help you remove more toxins and help you feel better.

This diet requires a good deal of planning, because once you start the diet, there is a schedule to follow in order to succeed in ridding a maximum of toxins. Also, when toxins come out of the fat, they enter the bloodstream. These ill effects will be felt until they leave the body. Hence the massages and colonics to help rid the toxins and feel better! Body parts that hurt before will probably hurt worse until the toxins leave, so you will want to have the supplements on hand and that schedule down pat before then!!

I'm on day 10 of the diet as I write this. I have lost 10 pounds! I am female, 5'11 and was 163 pounds when I started and am now 153 pounds. My stomach is flat now and others notice the difference! I was very achy the first 5 days. I felt extreme cravings for food in the beginning (which isn't surprising with all the excitotoxins added to foods today to keep us "hooked"). The cravings do go away, I promise!

Light exercise is recommended to help toxins in the lymphatic system drain. Saunas and soaks with epsom salts help pull toxins out of the skin and soothe aches and pains. Heavy exercise or work is not advised without adding protein shakes. If one only wants to detox and does not want to lose weight, protein shakes are a must.

Don't let aches and pains scare you away from this detox diet - it means you are detoxing AND! ... that you will have rid yourself of future daily aches and pains. Many have not needed to go back on painkillers and anti-depressants after this diet!

For most of us, the 21 pound weight loss is an awesome bonus, in addition to clearer skin, clearer thinking, aches and pains going away, a better working digestive system, more brain energy, happier moods and more. The change is noticeable, instead of feeling fatigued all the time, you will now go to bed tired and wake up early with an increased abundance of energy you did not have before!

Bottom line -- This is an excellent book in which to change your lifestyle to a healthier one, ... and it works!

Note: One of the hard to find supplements are found here on Amazon: Super Phos 30 Liver Flush(1oz.)

Also: Here's another book that will help convince you to stay on track with detoxifying. Awesome Book with very similar theory and methodology: The Cure: Heal Your Body, Save Your Life

Reviewer Permalink
I purchased this book with the intention of doing the program for 7 days, 14 days max. I did the 7 day, did not do the enemas or the dry brushing and still lost 7 lbs. Any longer on any diet without protein you will begin to lose muscle. I have strong willpower, and if I thought it would be a huge benefit for me to do the entire 21 days, or if i didnt have much muscle to lose in the first place, I would totally do it. I did her plan for 7 days and did another detox plan for the other 7 days that allows you to eat solid food. I am an advocate of detoxing - but you should follow Dr. Roni's advice and check with your physician before embarking on such an extreme program. It does work - the weight will come off, but if you don't change your mindset about what you put in your body after you come off the detox, you will gain it all back and then some. I do still use some of the green drinks and antioxidant drinks in the diet, and I love juicing. There is valuable information in there and lots of support groups should you choose to do it. I will do the detox again, but only the 7 day "tune up".

I'm on DAY 6 and I've lost 8.5 pounds!

Having said that, let me add that my success so far has been largely due to my own ingenuity and prior knowledge of the many poorly presented concepts this plan adheres to.

Reading this book, I was amazed at the general negative undertone throughout, especially when combined with the insistently surprising references by both authors to their personal religion and faith. While both authors describe in detail their negative health influences over the years (the book reads like one bad health crisis after another), when it came to the positive elements of their recoveries from these health issues, not much was said. I noticed many opportunities where the authors could have pumped up their dialogue with lively positive feedback to empower their reader, yet did not. It would seem to me, if you want to inspire people to drastically change their habits, playing up the positive would be crucial. By the time I got to the "story" about sisters who died after binging on beer and bar food because they did not come off their 21 day cleanse as prescribed, I was done with the bad vibe this book gives off and was left with the distinct feeling if I ever met the authors in person they'd have dark clouds hovering over their heads.

As well as the book being a downer to read, the majority of the program is presented in a very secretive way. Detailed info on supplements, processes and assured recipes are nearly non-existent (the products can be found on an accompanying website, though what you can expect to get in the detox kits sold here is also vague). Who writes a book to help people, then snatches away all the "help" at the last minute? There's that dark cloud again. Clearly the focus for the authors was on making a buck. Offering up true, accessible healing to their readers seems to be secondary, if at all.

Still, once you figure out where to find the program necessities, the diet does work and I couldn't love the results more. Here's the scoop:

The drink mixes and "cleansing herbs" kit are all from a company called Garden Greens. You can find their products by googling "Vegesplash", "Essential Greens" and "Inner Cleanse". You can also double check this info on the MV Detox Diet website by clicking "Buy Detox Products" and thoroughly reading all the info and links in the kit descriptions. Clicking many of the links highlighted in blue will bring up ingredient and nutrition info for the products offered.

All of the other products listed in the book for the program are easy to find at Whole Foods or Super Supplements. If you tell the store clerk what you are using the item for they can guide you to the right one.

I couldn't find the Garden Greens products locally and chose a different brand (with the help of the clerk at Super Supplements) based on the somewhat vague guidelines given by the author. So far, I feel great and the program works as outlined with these products too!

Many of the concepts here are based on principles found in the raw food movement. If this book leaves you thinking, "ok, but why?", check out the books by Natalia Rose. She empowers her readers with an incredible amount of inspiring knowledge, and her vibrant lust for life and good food is immediately contagious. Her book titled, "Raw Food Life Force Energy" is particularly upbeat, fun and packed with info.

FYI: I am a 165 pound female with 25 pounds to lose.

I had the opportunity to hear Dr Roni DeLuz and was very impress with the information she provided. I think in no means is she trying to promote an eating disorder program. She is offering an opportunity for the body to be detox. I believe you should find out the fact about a product or book before giving unnecessary advise.

Diets come and go. We had the adkins diet in the early 2000's which entailed cutting out carbs. Eventually this turned into low carb diets and then America shifted to low fat. This just sounds rediculous. Anybody can lose weight by just eating correctly and eating at the right times. Typically, people eat their heaviest meal in the evening which is when we are winding down. If one wants to increase their metabolism which will burn through your food and keep you fit. Your best option is to eat 5 small meals/snacks a day. Say you are normally eating 1500 calories per day. Many will argue well if I eat 5 meals a day I am eating more and getting fat or gaining weight. Not so! In fact if you eat 5 300 calorie meals you are eating the same amount of food just several different times. The 21 day diet is inefficient and you will gain the weight back immediately when you get off of it or switch to whole foods. Be smart and save yourself some money and time!

I recall seeing this author (on a talk show) state "This process will not cause you any discomfort." I've fasted in the same way described in this book, and that statement is not true. Unfortunately, sellers often make untrue statements to encourage buyers to purchase their product. This is a shame.

Also, there is a portion in the book about a woman who went on the plan (utilizing the author's assistance). It was stated that the woman discontinued her medication when she began the program. To publish this is simply irresponsible, as there are likely some people that will try the same thing and harm themselves. All health professionals offering alternative methods of improving health do so with explicit instructions to not go 'cold turkey' and discontinue their medication. Instead, they should continue to be monitored (if there are serious, chronic health conditions present), and allow their doctor to adjust (titrate) the medication as their condition improves. I write this because, typically, chronic health conditions are not resolved overnight. It's a pity, but we all need to be our own advocate and not blindly believe and follow everything we read. To do so may be at our own peril. I write this to hopefully warn those who it may benefit to see all sides (not just one side) of the picture. Take good care.

OK, the most important thing about this detox to know is that it is not easy and it is not for everyone. But... If you can do the work and follow the concepts, there is no way it cannot work. I am on day 12 and have lost 17 lbs. The organic produce is expensive, as are the colonic treatments, but I was spending a lot more each day on junk food. Adopt the maintenance diet after and you will be healthy for the rest of your life!

The book is easy to read. It has all the information you need to be successful. The day to day, what you might expect to feel like, sections were helpful to me. The menus and recipes were great also. It isn't a plan that you can do forever but it did what I wanted. Eight pounds in 1 week. And now I have a proven method to assist me in the future.

I found myself flipping rapidly through the pages and pages of testimonials waiting for something really beneficial. I was disappointed, but kept reading because after all the hype I'd heard about this book, I thought it was going to be something helpful. Instead, it's merely repetition of "information" that could have been surmised in two pages. DeLuz does go to great lengths to give the pros and cons of other diets, mainly siting her verdict that they're too restrictive or complicated for people to implement. Yet, even here in other reviews, this plan is defended with things like, if you want results, you have to stick with it. DUH! I think that is the plain common sense advice for what it takes for anything to work.

This book is extremely lacking in recipes. Sources for all the toxins claims could have been organized better. The recipes should have been in the front, or at least somewhere near the claims. Jack LaLane already has a great juicer and juice program; go with his deal. It's cheaper, easier to follow, his books are about a page and a half of why to do it and then bam, bam, bam, he gives you a bunch of recipes and their nutritional breakdown. That and he's living long-term evidence.

Earlier this year I'd really made a mind set change about my health, and wanted as much information as possible to help me stick with the changes. I didn't want a pill or whatever; I wanted to change my habits.

After listening to Robin Quivers talk about her lack of success sticking with healthy eating, and subsequently gaining back all her weight following the cleanses that she did, I thought this book would be helpful for me. I was disappointed mostly by the lack of references to back up Ms. DeLuz's claims. Mainly it's many referrals to www.mvdietdetox.com. You go there and can get a 21-day "special" for ONLY $199...HMMM...I was disappointed that, on page 132, she teeters on a version of the Urban Legend of John Wayne's 40 pounds (or 45 or 50, depending on which online site you're on, plus Elvis' 60 pounds of impacted fecal matter at death - check out Snopes.com on that - John Wayne never had an autopsy. He'd already had several surgeries and died of cancer, there was no need, nor is it ever documented in the bazillion "claims" online) where she claims, "Many people have between ten and twenty-five pounds of toxic fecoid matter just sitting in their colon!" Well, that's where I closed the book. And not just because "fecoid" is not a real word. Simply call a gastroenterologist and ask how much pain a person would be in, rectal bleeding would be occurring, and what would be the symptoms of this impacted fecal matter.

I'm also disturbed by the vagueness on page 32 (where there actually is a reference to one bestselling author) about, "sick soil produces sick crops." I'm amazed that anyone wouldn't remember those films from grade school talking about sick soil produces NO crops. Basic botany dictates that vegetation can only thrive if there's a healthy balance of minerals and proper soil conditions. And it seems like too much of a rumor with the, "you have to eat between fifteen and twenty cups of spinach," to get the same nutrition as a cup of spinach grown in 1950...when they were using paraquat and DDT????? Come ON!!

With that said, I do believe much of what DeLuz WANTS to do is good. It's just sorely lacking in organization, references, and the science behind her claims. If you are completely ignorant about even the most basic nutritional facts, this may help you. (You can get the definition of "germ" and "fat" on page 214 of the glossary, for example.) There's one tiny blurb about diabetes, which she should have expounded on, and the dangers of sugar, and what makes sugar, and what sugar does, as far as being one of the main toxic dangers in our society. She has another tiny blurb about sugar on page 37.

Can you tell I'm ticked about buying this book? Good luck to you.

The bottom line...it works. Yes, it is strict. Yes, it requires planning.

I have lost 15 pounds in over 2 weeks. I feel better than ever. I wake up alert, and have a lot more energy. My family is annoyed that I am constantly cleaning, and organizing, our home.

It seems like the ones who say it does not work, have yet to try it.

It has changed my life for the better.

Supposedly you can lose an average of a pound a day on this program. I'm not sure why it's called the "Diet Detox" because the book clearly points out that detoxifying is much different than dieting.

This "program" works by you eating certain foods which detoxify your body. The goal of detoxifying is to cleanse and rest the body. But, since one of the natural consequences of detoxifying is that excess weight falls off, you'll not only have a cleaner running body, but a lighter one as well- as least so says the book.

Lots of testimonial abound, which, by the way, is the poorest form of proof that something is effective. The book also offers a 7 day tune-up and a 2 day weekend cleansing as well.

After looking at the book, I'm not sure I could bring myself to follow it, so I personally would only recommend it to those readers who are into this kind of thing. For the rest, I'd stick to the old fashioned way of losing weight by eating less and exercising more. Readers who need more motivation to make healthy lifestyle changes might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator.

I have had a lifestyle of near-vegetarian diet (exceptions: fish and dairy; coffee, chocolate and cabernet) with regular cardio and strength-training for at least ten years, and I'm considered "healthy" and "in good shape". But I was doing my best to hide the fact that I had accumulated feelings of fatigue, lack of focus and joint ache that made me irritable and depressed. I am a scientist and work at a medical center; my MDs did blood and imaging tests but found nothing wrong and at most recommended I take Advil. Then, I had a car accident due to lack of focus and this shocked me into realizing I had to cure myself of whatever was wrong right away. After reading alot, I decided there were good grounds to suspect I needed a detox. Before reading, I had never heard of or done a detox before.

This book is the first I've found that pulls together improved nutrition, a detox diet and detox aids. I cross checked alot of the info and removed the gallbladder-liver flush but otherwise followed the detox for 17 days my first try. This meant stopping a significant coffee habit cold turkey, which I thought impossible, but beyond one four hour headache, wheatgrass made it easy. The green powder noticably improved my nutrition and within a few days I felt remarkably better. I don't have interest in cooking or juicing so instead I used Odwalla Poma'grande and SuperFood with Vegan soups from Trader Joe's. (I did find it necessary to put the daily foods and aids into spreadsheets that I could carry in my purse.)

As I came off the detox I was surprised to find I had food sensitivities I never connected before. My mind, enery and mood are all back to a self I'd thought age had left behind. I'm grateful to the comprehensive and supportive information provided in this book.

This is a easy read with good information, nothing earthshakingly new, just another presentation of information already published in many other places. There is not a lot of deep science or complex terminology, so if you like the "how and why" you will want to know more. People who know little or nothing about detoxing and nutrition will find this book useful, and people who are familiar with the subject will enjoy the testimonials. In my experience with nutrition and nutritional supplements, I would place this information towards the radical side of natural eating philosophy, i.e. that everything man made is bad for you, which I disagree with. Read this book with a grain of salt, just not the whole shaker.

I was prompted to buy this after seeing the info for it on CNN with Larry King, I had just returned from a fabulous detox in the Philippines, but still came away feeling like i needed more... i bought the book and the supplements from the site which include all the shakes and things you need so your not constantly juicing although juicing is amazing too) or living in your kitchen.. this provided freedom for my very busy, fast paced life.. I did the detox, and the first 7 days lost 8 1/2 pounds( not just water, toxins and old fecal matter).. I am now into my 16th day and I am down 19 pounds... I never felt better in my life, not only have I lost weight but my chronic illness of constipation has diminished, I have learned a lot about toxins over the years, but this is amazing... the weight has melted away, i have lost 3 sizes and many inches, cellulite is gone ( from illuminating the toxin build up)... I have achieved all of this with out much effort in working out, i swim and that is it...I am finally back to my high school weight and counting.. Thanks, Dr. Roni Deluz for this wonderful gem... I highly recommend this life changing exp.... The program is very strait foward and the only that can set you up for failure like other diets do , is yourself... Don't hesitate... happy detoxing to a fabulous new you!!!!

Overall, I thought the book was extensive in explaining the benefits of juicing, and it gave good step by step instructions and suggestions on how to gradually get back into a regular eating plan after following the juice plan for a certain amount of days.

But, I was looking for more recipes and combinations of fruits and vegetables. There were recipes for dressings and soups, but only a few suggestions for how to actually put together your day to day juicing plan.

Overall the suggestion I got from the book was to put together any fruit or vegetable drinks and then consume every two hours. I could have learned all that on my own.

This book could have been written in a more organized manner. Also, the diet is better as a weekend detox, than a three-week diet as most of the people who do it for three weeks feel weak and dizzy. The author claims they feel weak and dizzy because of past issues; I doubt that. Most people feel week and dizzy from NOT EATING. I don't think people that have to work will be feeling well and there might be some sick days used up from this nutty diet.

While I enjoyed reading the book and I agree with the author's philosophy, I found the juicing and the green drinks so disgusting that I actually didn't eat for a whole day. I lasted 4 days on this diet and wasn't hungry, but even the mushy soup for dinner was so unappetizing that I knew I couldn't last seven days, let alone 21. If you don't mind drinking vegetable juice, you can probably reap the benefits of the detox. But I still feel like throwing up every time I look at the cover of the book.

I THINK THIS BOOK AND IT'S INFORMATION IS EXTREME IN IT'S RECOMMENDATIONS. SHE WARNS THAT YOU MAY BECOME ILL WITH FEVER AND/OR FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS AND I DEFINANTLY DID. I BELIEVE YOU COULD COMPLETE THIS DETOX PROGRAM AND GET THE BENEFITS OF THE CLEANSING WITHOUT SUCH A STRICT "NO CHEW" PROTOCOL. I WONDER HOW HEALTHY IT EVEN IS. THE INFORMATION IN THE BOOK WAS DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW AND IT TAKES QUITE A LOT OF DEDUCTIVE REASONING ON THE READERS PART TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE AUTHOR IS TRYING TO INSTRUCT YOU TO DO. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT IS THAT IT GOT ME THINKING ABOUT JUICING AGAIN AND EXPERIENCING THE WONDERFUL HEALTHY FEELING YOU GET FROM IT AND I HAVE BEGUN JUICING REGULARLY AGAIN. I WAS SURPRISED HOW THINGS LIKE CLEAN WATER, ORGANIC TEA, GREEN AND BERRY DRINKS COULD KEEP YOU SATISFIED THROUGOUT A DAY. I HAVE INCORPORATED MUCH OF THIS INTO MY EVERY DAY LIVING AND HAVE DEFINANTLY FELT THE BENEFITS OF INCREASED ENERGY, MENTAL CLARITY AND LESS AFTERNOON ENERGY LAGS. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! AND PROBABLY NOT FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS HEALTH ISSUES, WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING WITH THEIR DOCTOR.

This book is nothing but a huge commercial for the website and detox hotel they run. If you do check out their site online, the 'kit' to go with the diet is $199! You can get the same of everything they sell for a total of about 60 bucks at GNC online.

All of the information they offer on doing a juice fast is available for free. Look it up on google and there's a ton of valuable information that goes further in-depth than this book could ever hope to. I also went to my local library and found a couple of books which were much more helpful. None of the other information I've seen regarding juice fasting includes daily enemas or taking supplements/powders.

I was reluctant at first to try this diet. But I will say this is one of the best things I have done for myself. I made it through the 21 day program and lost 29 pounds. You have to be creative and make up your own smoothie drinks. I used lots of fresh fruits that were in season. Another key is to stay on the schedule so you do not get hungry. After the first two days I found I had a lot more energy and amazingly joint pain I have been experiencing for the last three years had almost disapeared entirely. I found the book interesting and educational on creating a healthier lifestyle. Well worth the money.
