Microsoft's FrontPage 98 exam 70-055 is the #1 elective MCSD exam! If you want to pass it, you'll need to understand FrontPage in exceptional depth -- especially the advanced topics many books skip. That's why you need MCSD: Designing and Implementing Web Sites Using Microsoft FrontPage 98! Top FrontPage trainer, author, and Microsoft MCP David Karlins has written the most complete FrontPage prep guide available -- with detailed coverage of advanced Web development and deployment. He covers the entire Web lifecycle, from requirements analysis through deployment, security, and beyond. Define the technical architecture and conceptual design for your site; set up your development environment; and build an easy, inviting user interface. Deploy user services built with Java, ActiveX, DHTML, CSS, templates, and animation; publish, maintain, and secure your site; even evolve it to reflect new browsers. You'll find test questions after every chapter, sample exams at the end of the book, and a bonus FrontPage CBT Systems CD-ROM training module. It's more than great exam preparation: it's a great guide to developing with FrontPage for years to come! |

This book will not help you pass the exam. At most, it can be used a brief introduction to FrontPage, but not to the FrontPage exam. It provides insufficient coverage of the exam style and material. This book is simply not a good exam guide, although it does help you learn a little about FrontPage. The CD that comes with the book will only help if you have absolutely no idea what FrontPage is about.

I sympathize with the reader who posted the review on 9/11. The FrontPage MCSD Exam is difficult, costly, and requires all of us who take it to set aside hours, even weeks of unpaid time to study and prepare. On top of all that, the exam format and testing environment are both very difficult.
But... none of that really validates the readers conclusion that he failed the test because of my book. Any long, technical book will have a few minor errors like the one noted by the reader, and in this case, I post corrections at the book's Web site as soon as I'm notified of them. People who buy this book and embark on the preparation process for the 70-055 exam should understand what they're in for. My book cannot compensate you for prep time, training classes, or do anything about the high cost of the exam. The book simply organizes and presents the information required to pass the test. I think the book is a good value - it includes a free introductory-level FrontPage training CD. But some readers will need to take additional FrontPage training to prepare them to pass the FrontPage MCP exam. The sample tests in the book and the online exam cover the material in the test, but cannot duplicate the exact interactive format of the exam itself. Finally, as other readers have noted, my Web site provides many additional helpful resources for passing the exam including a forum for exchanging experiences. Readers who are already experts at FrontPage seem to find the book very helpful in preparing for the sometimes strange and obscure skills required for the exam. For other FrontPage developers preparing for the exam, a book like Teach Yourself FrontPage 98 in a Week is a better place to start. There are many resources for preparing for the FrontPage MCP exam, and used in that context I think my book is valuable. Note: I included stars in this posting only because an entry in that field is required to post a review. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-05 09:06:37 EST)

Took the test and failed. I believe the fault was the book's not mine. I new the book from top to bottom. When I failed the test. Me and my wife were very surpised. Later, I read it again to see what went wrong. I reliexed that there is so much incorrect information in the book that it wasn't a surpise that I failed the test. Example, page 15 says "javascript and java can be incorporated in Frontpage Webs sites, requires Internet Explorer or netscape version 4.0 or higher". while page 50 says, "Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer versions 3 and higher interpret JavaScript." There is a bunch conflicting facts in the book. I am not going to waste my time looking up all the misfacts because I am going to spend my time wisely studying another book with true information so I can pass the exam next time around. I knew I was in trouble the night before the exam during my review seesion, I saw some pretest answer in the back of the book with wrong answers. The pretest is a joke and has a bunch of one line question while the exam 70-055 longest question was close to 2 pages while the shortest was a paragraph long. This book is a BIG WASTE of my time and I want David Karlins pay the $100 exam fee and $50 for his crappy book which I will use for toliet paper. I also want him to pay me back $600 for my 30 hours of study time on his junk (30 X what I make an hour $20) = $600. My advise is do not read the book. You will fail the exam, get a book that doesnt have false information.

This book does not give you a good idea of the exam materials covered or the style of questions, which is half the battle. Also contains far too many typos and incorrect information. The book to buy is MCSD Frontpage 98 Study Guide : Exam 70-55 (Certification), which is also available at Amazon.com.

I am really impressed with this book! I used it as part of my preparation for the MCSD elective exam on Front Page 98 and scored 840! I am looking very forward to reading some of David's other books!

I was very disappointed by this book. The entire time I was reading it I kept asking myself, "Can the exam really be this easy?" The answer, NO, it is not that easy. I passed the MCSD Core Three on my first try with only books and experience to help. I consider myself a very good "book-learner" and I have used FrontPage from 97 through 2000.
This book is inadequate for passing the exam, it should be listed under "Learning" not "Certification" (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 07:05:37 EST)

I found this book to be very, very reader friendly. Especially if you are familiar with Front Page.I feel very confident that I will pass the MCP Course. If you have never used Front Page however, and plan on using it as your Site Management tool, I would recommend getting the Front Page Bible 98 along with this book to give you some more creative & developement methods for Front Page. I would also recommend, if your not familiar with Front Page already, that you take the 'Study Break' questions he has seriously and work through them until you have an understanding of the material. All in all, David did a great job. Hope this review helps and good luck with the test if you are headed in that direction.

David's book is an excellent introduction to FrontPage '98. I did not know anything about FrontPage before purchasing this book, and I was able to pass the Microsoft's FrontPage certification exam. His book includes a short quiz for every chapter. There are also two web sites associated with the book, one site which is filled with more quizzes and another site (David's site) which has even more information about FrontPage. The CD-ROM that came with the book has a good beginner's tutorial on it, valuable if you never touched FrontPage before. The certification is tough, but this book will help you to prepare. You should use as many study resources as possible, but this is certainly the best FrontPage 98 study-guide book available.

I already had some web experience but needed to get certified quickly. This book was extremely helpful and complete in information re: FrontPage and what was expected on the exam. The CD and samples were very helpful as well. I would recommend this book to anyone needed certification. I passed in 1!

I purchased MCSD: Designing and Implementing Web Sites Using Microsoft FrontPage 98 only 2 weeks ago and it has been instrumental in preparing for exam 70-055. It is clear, concise, and it doesn't matter if you don't have prior FrontPage 98 experience. Actually, I never used FrontPage 98 before purchasing David Karlins' book and I already feel I am quite savy at using FrontPage 98. I have already attempted to write the 70-055 exam and, unfortunately, failed by only one question. However, after the exam I returned to David's book and was able to find all the answers to the questions I had answered wrong. I feel confident I will pass the exam the next go around. MCSD: Designing and Implementing Web Sites Using Microsoft FrontPage 98 is by far the best publication for preparing for exam 70-055!

David's book is an excellant introduction to FrontPage 98, andwill help you obtain you MCP. The questions at the end of the chapter, and his two excellant web sites, provide an good review of FrontPage. However, do not make this your only source for studying. The questions on the exam are difficult, and this book does not cover in-depth all the information needed, at the difficulty level encoutered on the test, to pass.

David Karlin's book is a very nice resource for passing the MCSD FrontPage exam. Beyond the book itself, the supporting website is also very helpful. You can ask questions from others who have taken the exam including the author himself! He responded to a few of my questions regarding the exam very quickly. I definitely recommend this book, but the exam is tough so you'll probably need other sources as well.
Good luck! FB (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 07:05:38 EST)

This book is a must have if you're taking the FrontPage 98 exam (70-055), the author handles topics in a follow along fashion which allow you to go through the steps to better understand the process involved in managing a FrontPage website, The reason this is so important is that we fall into our own habits and the test doesn't care so much that you know what you are doing but the how and why of it. This book allows you to grasp that. The book also has test questions at the end of each section with answers at the end of the book, the Author also adds a website with a great exam which can be taken on line to better help prepare you. Although I didn't care much for the CD included with the book, for someone who is just learning FrontPage it may be a good addition. With this book MCP should be no problem. As a follow up for people who like me have been using FrontPage 2000 for a while now, this book serves as a great refresher to FrontPage 98.
