Barron's New MCAT, 2007 (Barron's How to Prepare for the New Medical College Admission Test Mcat)

Beginning in January?07, students applying for admission to medical schools must take the computer-based MCAT. The pencil-and-paper version of the Medical College Admission Test will no longer be given. Barron?s new eleventh edition of the MCAT manual prepares applicants with four full-length practice tests modeled after the brand-new computer-based tests. Each practice MCAT consists of 144 questions?the same number to be found on the new MCAT?with all questions answered and explained. Every test question in the manual closely reflects those on the computer-based test in length and degree of difficulty. Also presented are subject reviews that cover all test topics. They include:
  • A detailed MCAT science review in biology, chemistry, and physics
  • A math review
  • Verbal reasoning test-taking strategies
  • Advice on answering the MCAT writing sample

Test takers will also value this book?s handy reference tables, which include logarithms and exponents, a table of common logarithms, the periodic table of the elements, a list of the elements with their symbols, and a chemistry reference table.

(Hide Review...)  A cheap way to get ahold of some decent practice tests

I agree with the other reviewers in that the review portion of this book is not all that useful... however it does provide four full-length practice tests, with explanations on every answer. While these tests were written by Barron's and not by the AAMC, I've worked my way through them and found them to be very helpful in studying. If anything, for the price this book is going for, you should buy it just for the tests.

    Good luck everybody!

(Hide Review...)  Useless, doesn't reflect the real MCAT

I bought several books to study for the MCAT, including this one. I didn't even touch this one. It provides superfluous information that you don't even need on the MCAT and the practice exams do not the reflect the questions from the actual test.

This book is kindda pointless. It goes WAY into detail.. they cover things that seriously WON'T be covered on the mcat. I do NOT recommend this book whate-so-ever. There is no focus.

I barely even use this book as a resource. Lots of detail, not very useful in preparing you for the MCAT

This book is great. The information presented is very detailed and it helps you pick out your weak points. But, I would not use this book alone to start studying for the MCATs because the information in this book requires some general knowledge of the topic discussed. If you are trying to study for the MCATs, I would suggest you take the college courses first, and then study for this test using the Kaplan MCAT book, Princeton review, etc, while at the same time using this book. This book has information that you might not see in other MCAT pre books that can help augment your body of knowledge

The biology goes into a lot of details -- which is great -- but also not-so-great if you are trying to learn. It is like they expect you to know your stuff before you start reviewing. Hence, it could work on a better presentation.
