The thoroughly revised and updated Third Edition of the acclaimed Modern Epidemiology reflects both the conceptual development of this evolving science and the increasingly focal role that epidemiology plays in dealing with public health and medical problems. Coauthored by three leading epidemiologists, with sixteen additional contributors, this Third Edition is the most comprehensive and cohesive text on the principles and methods of epidemiologic research. The book covers a broad range of concepts and methods, such as basic measures of disease frequency and associations, study design, field methods, threats to validity, and assessing precision. It also covers advanced topics in data analysis such as Bayesian analysis, bias analysis, and hierarchical regression. Chapters examine specific areas of research such as disease surveillance, ecologic studies, social epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, genetic and molecular epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, and clinical epidemiology.

The gold standard to judge a book is by its format and look, not the content, as is evident in modern days. SO I have no idea why the authors agreed to publish such a terribly formated book. They are irresponsible authors.
This book is deceptively thin despite its dense information. The font size is excruciatingly small, smaller than that of the second version (or maybe the line space is too small?). In addition, the book is large in paper size (wishing to standout in the bookshelf?) BTW, the papers used in this book are like those used in dictionaries. Thin and white. I am afraid of tearing it off when reading it. Thus, it is a good book for bookshelf, not for reading and studying. I gave only one star for its rich content. Masterly. Rothman and coworkers' 3rd edition of the classic `Modern Epidemiology' is a landmark step in presenting with cohesiveness and clarity traditional + cutting-edge concepts and methods for observational research (and by extension for experimental research on human subjects as well, since problems like unblinding or loss-to-follow-up may reintroduce bias in clinical trials after randomization, with a corresponding need for epidemiological interpretative and analytical tools).
This highly regarded volume has no equal, as it has been not only an authoritative source of information but `the' reference on epi methods for almost a quarter century. For those looking for an introductory level textbook, Rothman's one by Oxford University Press is highly recommended, since the comprehensive `Modern Epidemiology' requires some previous exposure to the concepts and biostatistical methods presented. The 3rd edition is an encyclopedic effort, brings methodological coherence to a whole new level, is highly readable, and confirms itself as the standard reference on epidemiological and clinical research for many more years to come. An outstanding scholarly achievement. Definitely a must-have for anyone who needs to learn and apply basic/advanced epidemiological methods rigorously in clinical as well as general population settings. I totally agree with some of the negative reviews. This book serves only one purpose: To make things more complicated than they are. I kinda feel sorry for a book of hundreds of pages, but again as we said: the purpose is to make everything more constipated...

didnt care for this book. Good information, but presented poorly. I think there are better textbooks out there now that present information clearer and in less words and without crazy equations.
