John A. Van de Walle has written a book that helps readers make sense of mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach mathematics to children K to 8. Elementatry and Middle School Mathematics consists of 16 chapters reflecting the view that all mathematics can be taught through a problem-solving approach that motivates children and builds their confidence as they learn. This book thoroughly discusses the new standards and clearly develops four key aspects of teaching mathematics: the nature of mathematics as a science of pattern and order; an understanding of how children learn mathematics; a problem solving view of teaching mathematics; and specific methods for integrating assessment with instruction. Simple yet effective classroom activities are woven throughout the chapters as well as suggestions for technology and literature. For teachers, future teachers, and educators. nt Code -- F

I bought this book for a 400 level college course in teaching elementary math. It provides several different ways of presenting and thinking about a concept for the teacher to be familiar with. The book also lists hundreds of short activities and a ton of online resources and supplements. As far as a text book goes it is easy to read and comprehend.

I really think this book has a lot to offer for elementary edu. students. It gives a variety of ways to teach kids math. I used some of the techniques on my own kids and they were surprised to see some great alternative ways to learn how to do math problems differently. Definitely a book I will keep to use in the future!

The picture used to show this book was incorrect. I ended up getting an older edition. This book will not fit my class. Unable to return book. Make sure seller has the right picture for the front of the book before buying.

I have only worked with this book for a few weeks but am very pleased with what I am experiencing. There are numerous graphs, suggestions with ways to engage students, and internet links are available for teaching suggestions and math games.
This book clearly explains the material using visual supports like graphs and diagrams in bright colors. Internet sights for lesson suggestions, assessment and lesson reinforcing games. A great tool and a good resource that I plan to keep on hand. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-30 00:16:25 EST)

This was a required text for a M.Ed. class. The practices in this book are almost perfectly aligned with Massachusetts frameworks and the Connnected Math Project (CMP) text used by my district (Lowell). This book is very rich with lesson plan fodder and takes pains to explain the 'why' of CMP as well as the how. I'll be relying on this book for years to come.

This book is a great resource when planning lessons. I am a first-year Fifth Grade teacher and this book has proven invaluable to me when it comes to breaking down lessons into sequential activities. Another larger textbook was recommended to me, but comparatively, this book is concise and is very practical.

My teacher hasn't even had us open the book yet. No assignments from it either. If we were not going to use the book i would have liked to know and saved my self $100. But I'm sure its a good book i just haven't used it.

Get the newest edition if you need this book for a class. You will get lost if you get this edition. Other than that... the book was helpful in using other methods other than algorithms.

If you want to learn how to teach children math skills through hands on methods, this is a fantastic book! There are many many great ideas in this book for teachers to use to help their students understand math concepts in ways they've never been taught before. It'll be a reference book on my shelves for sure!

This is the rare textbook that's worth every penny of its breath-taking price. It's well written, enjoyable, and has relevance for teaching far beyond merely math. I would highly recommend it for home-schooling parents. Back when we went to school, we were just taught procedures: these are the steps in doing long division. Now educators realize it's important for children to be able to think mathematically and to really grasp mathematical concepts, not just follow rote steps. This book will help convince you of that and guide you through it.

This book is not really helpful for teachers in methods classes. I was not impressed with the lay out, or the accessibility to information. I consider this book a waste of my money!

This book contains multiple solid strategies for teaching mathematic concepts to children in elementary school. I never knew there were so many ways to look at addition and subtraction, but I do know different children will have different perceptive needs. Van de Walle catalogues strategies to help elem math teachers of any level.

Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Fifth Edition is an extremely practical and useful tool for teachers. Chapters include information for varying grade levels. All chapters relate mathematics instruction to the NCTM content and process standards. Principles of a high quality mathematics program (equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and technology) are presented throughout. Great suggestions for manipulatives and alternative ways to assist student's understanding of the concepts. This text helps the teacher make math "real world" and better yet, fun!
