| Calculus With Analytic Geometry | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Designed for the three-semester calculus course for math and science majors, Calculus continues to offer instructors and students new and innovative teaching and learning resources. This was the first calculus text to use computer-generated graphics, to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators, to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format, to be offered as a complete, online calculus course, and to offer a two-semester Calculus I with Precalculus text. Every edition of the series has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Now, the Eighth Edition is the first calculus program to offer algorithmic homework and testing created in Maple so that answers can be evaluated with complete mathematical accuracy. Two primary objectives guided the authors in writing this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and saves the instructor time. The Eighth Edition continues to provide an evolving range of conceptual, technological, and creative tools that enable instructors to teach the way they want to teach and students to learn they way they learn best.

I got this book for a price that's as half as the same item at the other places. Its quality is perfect. Highly recommend!

The only reason that I didn't give this one star instead of two was because the authors at least *pretended* to be writing a rigorous calculus textbook.
If you are interested in mathematics, and want to actually learn calculus, get yourself a copy of Tom Apostol's "Calculus" ... don't waste your time with Larson's book. If you are planning on majoring in economics, and want to robotically punch numbers into formulas -- this book is for you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-18 03:03:14 EST)

Possibly the worst Calculus compilation I've ever seen. No, definitely. The book has several glaring omissions, in terms of concepts, and refuses to use passable grammar or even descriptive language to illustrate its point. It also makes the assumption that your knowledge of pre-calculus and algebra is photographic. In other words, it's impossible to follow the steps outlined in examples without a complimentary reference (unintentional I'm sure...). My students and I were absolutely stunned at the lack of scope in the examples. The accompanying website is moody, at best, and frequently goes down. The ONLY redeeming quality about this book is that it has an abundance of proofs which are explained (terribly) before each section.
I could go on, but why? As others mentioned, new editions make no attempt to solve these problems; they're just there to make money. Private Tutors and Teachers: If you're looking for a decent Calculus I/II book, you haven't found it here. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-06 03:20:52 EST)

I almost never use the lessons in the book. I skim for theorems, properties, and whatnot. The lessons themselves are difficult to understand because the theory isn't linked to the problems in clear language. If it weren't for the professor providing that missing link in class, I wouldn't learn anything with this book. On the days I missed class, I get a headache trying to figure it out on my own with the book. The problems in this book are outstanding, though. I get a solid understanding of the material through excellent practice.

Larson and Hostetler's math textbooks are the best available, hands down. The calculus text is no exception. With clear pedagogy, lucid explanations, carefully graded problem sets, and concrete applications, the 8th edition of Calculus is simply the best calculus book available. Period.

It is hard to understand... by understand I meant you understand what really going on when you calculate something. I am not talking about memorize any method to solve a math problem but understand the math and apply it. The book explains you the method "1" but expects you to know "2" to solve the problems. Try another Calculus book instead.

great book with plenty of visualizations and examples. i do recommend keeping this book after your calculus classes if you end up taking differential equations and partial differential equations, as well as your engineering classes too.

The thing that's great about Larson's textbooks is the fact that the end of chapter problems are so well thought out. I learned Calculus I concepts thoroughly using this textbook. This new edition has great graphics and it's presentations are not too "busy". Any calculus text will be a bit rigorous so searching for perfection is probably a futile exercise. I recommend getting Volumes I and II of the Study Guide/Solutions manual. FYI: You can purchase instructional DVD's correlated to this calculus text from the Houghton-Mifflin website. (I have no affiliation with the company) I paid about $50 for a DVD set and they're great for reinforcing concepts from each section.

Larson and his team did an excellent job of presenting calculus in a clear and thorough way. The only way to really learn mathematics is to do lots of practice problems and the end of section exercises in Larson Calculus 8th edition are excellent. I recommend also getting the solutions manuals (volumes 1 and 2).

This textbook is absolute garbage. I got 'A's in all of my elementary math classes, and an 'A' in Precalculus, mainly because that class used Robert Blitzer's Precalculus (Third Edition), which is an excellent, clearly presented, well-organized, easy-to-follow math textbook. Now I'm taking Calculus I, which uses this book, and I'm lost, even though it's only the third week of class. I will most likely have to drop the class and lose money, because I simply can't make any sense of this textbook. It's as clear as mud. I have to re-read every section several times, and it still doesn't make much sense. It reminds me of the many terrible math books I had to endure back in the 1980s. The authors skip over a lot of steps that should be worked out, even in the two optional solutions manuals (which I also bought), and the information is not presented in a clear, logical manner, making it very hard to follow. There is no organization to the presentation of the material, and no consistency in format from chapter to chapter. The material is presented in a "stream of consciousness" style, and it jumps all over the place. The authors may know their stuff, but they certainly don't know how to present it effectively, which is the essence of teaching. Also, the print in this book is tiny, making you squint just trying to read it. I hate this book! I will have to try to find a much better Calculus book than this one, if I'm ever going to learn it. The cover of this book is very shiny and fancy, and it's in its 8th edition, making you think it must be a good book, right? Wrong! After 8 editions, it's still garbage! They should have put as much effort into the CONTENT of this book as they did into making its fancy, shimmering cover. It just proves the old adage, "You can't tell a book by its cover."

I bought this book for a Calc II course and found it to be excellent. The explanations, for the most part, are good, as are the diagrams and graphics, which make it very readable. Some of the explanations are more convoluted than necessary but these are the exception, not the rule. I would agree with the reviewer who said that the topics do not change - I have one of Larson's earlier textbooks and compared the two one day to find most of the exact same problems! All in all, a good book though. The website is great.

Calculus is an old problem, but new editions of the same material keep coming up. Calculus will not change, the way it is presented and explained can. At least to a certain amount. But just changing the sequence of exercise-numbers for each section, and moving sections from one chapter into another chapter, does not -in my opinion-warrant a new edition.
The actual text is the same as the old edition except: chapter 6 has 2 new sections (2 sections from the "old" chapter 5 have been moved to chapter 6).This is the only reason why I still gave it one star. My opinion about this book: The way college students are tricked out of money for books they actually don't need is absolutely unethical! As a student you can only hope that your professor will work with online tools such as "eduspace". The fee to get access to the site is MUCH more reasonable....If you are not a student and are interested in this book: ANY of the old editions will give you the exact same information about Calculus! This book clearly explains the different mathematical techniques of Calculus and provides great problems for practice. It shows a step-by-step process of how to perform different techniques and explains how and why they work, which is probably the most important facet of actually learning calculus. In other words, it breaks down a daunting subject into something easy to understand.

I have been a fan of Roland Larson's math textbooks, as they have always been very clear and the practice problems always make sense. I was recently stuck in some calculus courses which used the calculus textbook by James Stewart, and that book is a nightmare! Fortunately, my multivarible calc prof prefers Larson's book, which is what we use in class. Very good book; I recommend it much over Stewart's. Also, do note that the odd-exercise solutions are posted for free online at Roland Larson's website, which is given to you in the book.

But not much more than that. In other words, it's good enough, but it could be better. It would be really nice if it would give more applications of how calculus is useful. It does give a fair number of physics applications, mainly in mechanics, but most students are not into mechanics (I for one am a neuroscience and electrical engineering major). Also, it explains things in a sometimes more difficult way than necessary. The solutions guide that you can also buy often skips a number of steps when working out a problem. Finally, the book is very expensive for being about a subject that hasn't changed in ages.
