Hypnotic Writing: How to Seduce and Persuade Customers with Only Your Words

Discover the secrets of written persuasion!

"The principles of hypnosis, when applied to copywriting, add a new spin to selling. Joe Vitale has taken hypnotic words to set the perfect sales environment and then shows us how to use those words to motivate a prospect to take the action you want. This is truly a new and effective approach to copywriting, which I strongly recommend you learn. It's pure genius."
-Joseph Sugarman, author of Triggers

"I've read countless book on persuasion, but none come close to this one in showing you exactly how to put your readers into a buying trance that makes whatever you are offering them irresistible."
-David Garfinkel, author of Advertising Headlines That Make You Rich

"I am a huge fan of Vitale and his books, and Hypnotic Writing (first published more than twenty years ago), is my absolute favorite. Updated with additional text and fresh examples, especially from e-mail writing, Joe's specialty, Hypnotic Writing is the most important book on copywriting (yes, that's really what it is about) to be published in this century. Read it. It will make you a better copywriter, period."
-Bob Bly, copywriter and author of The Copywriter's Handbook

"I couldn't put this book down. It's eye opening and filled with genuinely new stuff about writing and persuading better. And it communicates it brilliantly and teaches it brilliantly-exemplifying the techniques by the writing of the book itself as you go along."
-David Deutsch, author of Think Inside the Box, www.thinkinginside.com

"Hypnotic Writing is packed with so much great information it's hard to know where to start. The insights, strategies, and tactics in the book are easy to apply yet deliver one heck of a punch. And in case there's any question how to apply them, the before-and-after case studies drive the points home like nothing else can. Hypnotic Writing is not just about hypnotic writing. It is hypnotic writing. On the count of three, you're going to love it. Just watch and see."
-Blair Warren, author of The Forbidden Keys to Persuasion

Out of all the advanced writing classes I have been in, you would think I have heard it all - but this book actually gave me insights into all types of writing - not just sales letters.
Novelists, Journalists, Artists, College students, Sellers of all types - writers in general will enjoy this book.
There was a bit too much repeating for my taste, but most of the information was worth the review!

Firstly let me declare my bias. Dr Joe Vitale wrote the forward to my book 'Bare Knuckle Selling' so understandably I cannot describe myself as a neutral reviewer! However I am a sales consultant, professional speaker on persuasion and an experienced copywriter. Therefore I understand the importance of language in the field of persuasion. If you want to learn more about how to persuade people using language then this book will be very valuable to you. I have read a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of books on copywriting and would strongly recommend you add this book to your library. You will find chapter: 45 "30 ways to write a hypnotic headline" very useful as if you don't grab the reader with your headline then your copy is dead in the water! You should also consider that Dr Joe has sold millions of dollars worth of products using his copywriting ability so he is obviously someone worth learning from.

I am disappointed with this book - boring which seems to be Joe Vitale's style - as much as I thought I liked him - I am starting to agree that although he might have had the right idea when he began - he is losing it in greed and glitz.

I picked up this book because I wanted some new ideas for a sales letter I was writing. I have experience as a writer and I've written sales letters/material before. However, I wanted to refuel my idea generator and that's what I got. Hypnotic Writing. It gave me exactly what I was looking for, a fresh way to look at my own style, my subject and my clients. I enjoyed the approach Mr. Vitale took in this book: short snippets (chapters) that generate ideas. I read the whole book and took 9 pages of notes in 3 hours. The notes that I compiled were easily turned into one of the best letters I have ever written. The feedback I have received has been very positive and the so far the sales-conversion on it has been in the low teens, (Not bad, in fact, I'm really happy with it)

Joe Vitale simply uses the Hypnosis metaphor along with actual hypnotic techniques to get his point across. I have read other reviewers that seem really dissatisfied with that issue, I am not sure why. I have also read other reviews that thought the book could have been condensed and I agree, to a point. There was some fluff, but no worse than 99% of other books. Yes, Joe Vitale writes about his own work and references customers and projects he has worked on. This is a notoriously bad trait most information/direct marketers do. On the other hand, as writers; aren't we supposed to write about what we know best? That would be ourselves, I hope.

Pound for pound, this book did exactly what I wanted it to do and I got great results from it. When compared to other direct marketing books, the issue I appreciate most is that it is self contained. What I mean is, it isn't a sales letter disguised as a book. My pet peeve is reading a book only to find out that you have to buy other services from the authors to accomplish your goals. Sure, Vitale self-promotes, but this book is a means to an end in it self, you don't have to buy anything else from him to accomplish your writing goals.

This book produces great ideas and it does it quickly. I would give it five stars if it had a little less filler.

(Hide Review...)  Good Title that lacks meat to feed the need
Reviewer Permalink
Let me sum this up quickly. Imagine you want to learn the words and techniques to write in a hypnotic way. You believe this book to be that means. Upon reading this you suddenly realize it is only good to help you identify but not actually write. This sums it up.
Imagine buying something to learn to write better. Realize it would be Ben Bova's book as well as Orson Scott Card's. They are proven writers with best sellers. No flashy titles but I realize you want meat to feast on not air. Ignore the title but get your good feed from proven people who will truly teach you. There is another book called "Conversational Hypnosis" it is geared to the sales person but is very good. Use many sources to learn writing and hypnosis. Then combine them. "Conversational Hypnosis" is about as close to what this book claims to be as any truly are.

(Hide Review...)  What you can learn from this book
Reviewer Permalink
If you are like me, you want whatever you write to be interesting. You want to capture people's attention from the get go, and them them to desire what you are selling, or just to be interested in whatever story you are telling.

Personally, I don't like Joe that much. He writes well, undoubtedly, and yet there he is irritating. This has been echoed by other reviewers in other books. It is his tendency to cross market his books, and relentlessly plug his other products. To illustrate just one of many examples, he mentions and links to to his hypnoticwritingswipe file website, where you can get additional resources on hypnotic writing. Also, look at the tag list on this page that accompanies this product and you will see what I mean. I guess I have to get past this.

If you read this book you will learn to make average writing fascinating, and many examples, including a summary of the hypnotic phrases used throughout the book. I found chapters 45 and 46 particularly interesting.
In order to really learn when your brain is being engaged by good copy or good writing, you have to pay close attention to passages in books, and notice when your state is changing. This takes some practice. How much is one good idea worth? If I take away one good idea from a book, the book is worth the price. I will be referring to this book time and again. The more I read this book the more useful it seems.

Excellent book. A nice, entertaining read and very useful. I have applied the methods and techniques in sales and marketing communication and it realy works well. People respond positively. Not only by buying but by reacting positively to this type of communication. This gets your customers to read your stuff and enjoy it at the same time. If your communication also includes a great offer, or an irressistible offer as Mark Joyner would call it, people will buy from you.

(Hide Review...)  Does he think customers are stupid?
Reviewer Permalink
I bought "Hypnotic Writing" and "The Irresistable Offer" at the same time and read them both.

The "Irresistable Offer" is brief, to the point (but still very complete), and states very clearly that one selling point in your ad copy should be that the customer is not stupid, he will square you in 3 seconds or less, he will see if there is any REAL value in what you have to offer, and many more things, in the blink of an eye. (the book gives you REAL MEANS to overcome these stumbling blocks)

Mr. Vitale, on the contrary seems that he wants to entertain his potential customers, and bribe them into thinking that what he sells (and sells, and sells) is extraordinary. He does that with redundant prose, beautiful prose, aesthetically speaking, BUT he shows his true colors from the headers down. Are you really thinking that by using an opening like "amazing breakthrough", like "the truth about..." is going to grab your potential customers' attention, and ABOVE ALL, their trust?
I think that by using Mr. Vitale's wording you are IMMEDIATELY revealing who you are: "I am a seller, I am trying to hypnotize you into buying my product, I don't really care to give you value, what I care is to impress you and make a sale." This is what Mr. Vitale's prose says when you read it.

He gives examples of "normal ad copy" that he translates into "hypnotic ad copy" and he probably expects that the reader will rave about his writing. Well, to me they are both downright awful. They both reveal that the main aim of the copy is not to deliver and communicate REAL VALUE, to offer credibility, to overcome the potential customer's objections by opposing a REAL deal, no, in his writings you "fascinate" the customers, and, in so doing, you sabotage yourself by revealing your real end.

He even adds two paragraphs written in Italian. Now, I am a native Italian, and Italian is my FIRST language. Let me tell you upfront that what Mr. Vitale says it is Italian IS NOT ITALIAN AT ALL. It is a computerized, awful, and totally illogical and incorrect translation of a decent Italian paragraph. He didn't even take the time to ask a translator to translate into REAL ITALIAN those two paragraphs (that he was going to include in a book), so to not offend the linguistics of such a noble language.

I would suggest that you purchase "The Irresistable Offer" by Mark Joyner, THAT is REAL marketing communication, honest, powerful, poignant.
brief but to the point, that is "ad copy" that will win the trust of your prospects immediately and give you a REAL edge over the competition.

What's not to love about this book? Not only does Joe uncover the psychological and impulse buying secrets, but he also teaches you how to turn that knowledge into instant masterful marketing techniques. This is a manual you will keep on your bookshelf nearby as you write any type of marketing copy, letters or emails. I would highly recommend this book for entrepreneurs, information marketers, and small business owners. (Hide Review...)  A Book I Could Have Written (had I been savvy enough)
Reviewer Permalink
The key to Mr. Vitale's writing style is it's hypnotic roots. I tripped over the same source material a couple of decades back (Ericksonian Hypnosis), and even attempted to apply it to my sales technique. I gave it up as a bad go, not because the principles weren't sound, but that Dr. Erickson seemed the only person who could make them work.

Enter Joe Vitale. He not only catches you with his words, he makes you read them.

I have been practicing the writing methods and found them paralleling many of the things being taught to me in other circles, specifically regarding story writing: You have to catch the reader's attention, then you have to hold it.

Mr. Vitale teaches you to write the stories that catch the reader's attention for just long enough to imagine, ask questions, wonder, puzzle, and wait on the tender hooks for answers.

Yes, there is a lot of self promotion in this book. Read it carefully. Make use of any and all free tools the author provides. Practice your writing with an eye toward keeping the reader on the edge of his seat.

Everyone who reads this book can come away with something useful.
Whether it's ad copy or a story, it is up to you to make it work.

Recommended.

The book should be entitled "All sales and no substance." This author keeps stringing the writer through a series of chapters, each saying that he is about to let you in on his secret, but instead he merely tells you more about his ebooks for sale online. His sales approach is not even very good. More like cheap and trashy. I've taken a few courses on hypnosis and can be hypnotized at the drop of a hat, but he couldn't hook me. I just found myself getting more and more annoyed. There are much better books out there. Don't waste your time or money.

Within One Month with this book next to my Computer I blogged my way to the first page of Google without spending a dime. There is some self promotion in this book but take it as a a good how to example.
Hypnotic writing may seem like a strange title. Please do not be fooled. There is a treasure chest of information here. Chapter 42 "Hypnotic Blogging" is a must read for every blogger. I have hired copywriters in the past. With this book next to my laptop I no longer need to to do this.
"Chapter 45" alone with "30 ways to write a Hypnotic Headline" makes this work worth the price. I give the book Five Stars and more.

In regards to Joe Vitale 's book: mediocre author, leaves the reader with an empty void, not much is discussed in terms of true significance, rambling on with no apparent subject, no skills are truly laid out or analyzed, a brushing over at best of what a writer's talent could be.
If the author has never attended college (so it appears), it is a very steep hill to climb, to position himself as a 'writer' who can guide others.

One of the best aspects of this book is that Joe Vitale does on the page what he is teaching the reader how to do. You learn about hypnotic writing and at the same time you experience it on the page in front of you. And it isn't a secret! Joe is transparent about that fact. This book is as close as a reader can get to experiential learning on the topic without taking a workshop.

Okay, I know, there are some that will deride this book because Vitale does try to sell you something on about every 5th or 6th page. I find no fault with that as long as the book delivers, and this one certainly does that. Besides, my Wimberly neighbor has like a gazillion dollars. Do you think he made all that money without pitching a sale every time he had the opportunity?

There is no doubt, much to learn here. Vitale is a master in the field and HYPNOTIC WRITING certainly lives up to his reputation. Although I did not like this one as well as Buying Trances, I sort of read them out of order. Should have read this one first. Oh well. Anyway, as I said, there is a lot to learn here.

One thing, which I am practicing right now as I write this, is to turn the monitor off and start typing away. I have no idea how this will turn out, but can tell you that the keys are flying much faster than my stubby fingers usually type, since I am not making the mistake of editing as I go along. Thank you Joe. That trick alone, for me, was worth the price of the book.

My copy is filled with notes, front to back. My favorite chapter is 44,45,46,47 & 48. Yeah, I know, that's more than one chapter. But together, they are the bomb.

There's also a good bibliography. Being an avid reader, that's always a plus. My summary, get the book. Read it. Read it again if you have to. Refer to it often. You'll be a better writer for it.

Joe Vitale has done it again! I purchased the ebook "Hypnotic Writing" a couple of years ago, but this printed version is updated and packed with tips and strategies that ANY copywriter can use. It was hard to put down, so I started reading it for the second time! I am a bit prejudiced about this book, and Joe Vitale, since he's a friend of mine, but I highly recommend getting this book if you want to explode your ad copy. I have all of Joe's books in my collection now.

Joe Vitale is the master in this arena. What is remarkable is not only that he can do hypnotic writing, but that he can teach it. So many people can't translate their special gifts into words to lead others toward learning how to do what they do. Dr. Vitale is rare in his ability to put it all together. This is a valuable book for anyone who wants to market any product or service, especially on the internet or through direct mail.

An outstanding book to teach and learn from. This book teaches us how to write to influence people. That influence might be to get them to read a book, your ad, your business profile... anything. Outstanding book, packed with tips I'll need to read again and again.

(Hide Review...)  Filter the Hype and you got a great book
Reviewer Permalink
I like this book. I got a lot out of it. It's written in short chapters with tips you can deal with and the guy obviously can put it down on paper and make a difference. I learned a lot and will learn lots more I am sure as this book is a keeper for writers.

What I agree with the one reviewer on here that I read is that there is an ample amount of hype in here that you have to filter out. If you do you got something. I guess we all have a degee of hype so take it out and gather up the jewels he offers cause they are in here.

(Hide Review...)  Great Core with Sleazy Filler
Reviewer Permalink
I tried to come up with another title then "Great Core with Sleazy Filler" but couldn't. It nails this book perfectly.

There are great writing and composition tips. And the book reflects it's message by using it's own techniques. I can see the value of this, and can see that doing so would over-reach the natural tone of such a book. However, it's all the get-rich-quick, and over-the-top usage of "I've never told this secret to anyone before" types of manipulation that really disappoint. There are also claims with regards to hypnosis and psychology that are presented as "beyond doubt" and "proven" which are tenuous and no where near being such.

Near the end of the book Joe describes his mailing list, and how profitable it is, and then lists some emails he's sent to it. It felt like he had a cult of followers who are the same people who buy the "Get Rich in 15 Minutes a Day" programs (which sums up lots of his example sales copy in the book) and believe positive thinking and prosperity theologies are all that are need to succeed (usually described as get rich). Overall, Joe continually steps over my ethical lines of clarity and honesty.

Joe references Master Mind groups, which is a a Pseudo-Christian prosperity theology (New Though, Christian Science, etc.) and continually promotes his "The Attractor Factor" book. While the power of goal setting and visualization are undeniable, lets not forget about focus and work.

If you think you'll get more of the worlds limited resources because you sit in a circle and hold hands and wish for a larger house, then this book is definitely for you. Or go to his web site to find endorsements for products like "How to Get Lots of Money For Anything Fast!"

If you want to get some excellent writing and marketing tips, and can ignore the sleaze and tone done the excesses in your own writing, then this book is great as well.

The other strange thing is the reviewers. If you dig around, you'll find that they all seem to know each other, cross review, and peddle the same low-brow wealth creation or similar products. I actually discovered this book while looking at "Think Two Products Ahead", a book with over the top promotion on the Amazon page.

My final thoughts on the books content are on the marketing concepts in this book. This book tries to sell, whereas most modern marketing theory talks about an over-communicated marketplace where people don't trust advertising and explicit attempts to make you buy. "Guerrilla Marketing", "Positioning", and "The Fall of Advertising and Rise of P.R" all talk to this nicely. But this ignores market segmentation. There is a segment of the market you can sell directly too. If you come up with a simple message, blast it to millions of people, some will buy. But you will not get word-of-mouth marketing and a growing position in the market. So, if that is not your market, focus on the writing tips, and tone down the excess and apply within your own marketing framework.

It's been a while since a book has made me feel this conflicted. I'm giving it a three, since it's good writing material. I don't regret buying it, and it did improve my own copywriting- but in the context of my broader marketing experience.

On almost every chapter of this book the author just scratches the surface on interesting subjects and will reference other books instead of completing and going deeper into the subject himself. I didn't give a lonely star is because I did find some little bits of information. By the title you would think that it's a book to have; not so. If you can browse it, don't buy it.

(Hide Review...)  Immensely Effective!
Reviewer Permalink
Every once in awhile you come across a book that effectively teaches. But this time, I ran across a book that also inspires! I have spent the last decade as a Technical Writer and Short Story/Poetry author. I soon discovered that my hardline technical approach was literally sucking the life out of my writing. Like a piece of stale bread, my writing was edible and nourishing, but it damn sure wasn't a fresh Kaiser roll!

Joe Vitale's book starts by clarifying the misconceptions of hypnosis. You learn the power of the "waking trance", the power of suggestion and motivation. Then his book applies powers of suggestion, inspiration and motivation by revealing powerful tools and techniques for injecting writing with emotional and intellectual sizzle. Your writing will no longer just fill space on a page. Your words will jump to life, filling your reader's mind with visualizations, moving the reader, motivating the reader, and inspiring the reader. Your writing will change from a mindless chunk of garbled information to a beacon illuminating the reader through your story or guiding the reader to your treasure of knowledge.

This is a must-read for the serious writer who wishes to touch his readers. Not just for authors and "fluff manufacturers". The marketing copywriter, instructor, journalist, and...yes...the technical writer will even learn important steps to making THEIR next works a must-read.

As someone who does a bit of writing on the side, I was excited by the title of this book... Hypnotic Writing: How to Seduce and Persuade Customers with Only Your Words by Joe Vitale. I mean, who *wouldn't* want to have that type of effect on people? While it's got some interesting tips, I didn't come away with the type of warm, fuzzy feeling that I expected, however...

Contents: It's Time to Awaken; Stop! Do This First; What Is Impossible?; A Disclaimer; A Beginning; Agatha Christie Proves Hypnotic Writing Exists; My Secret to Hypnotic Writing; You Can't Even Bribe Me to Read a Lousy Letter!; What Is Hypnotic Writing?; Hypnotic Writing: A Case Study; The Great Intimacy Secret; What's More Important Than Copy?; Hypnotic Writing Controlled Study; How I Learned the Secret of Hypnotic Writing; What Is Hypnosis?; Two Ways to Cause Action; What About Your Web Site?; How Long Is Too Long?; What Every Reader Wants to Know; The Hypnotic Power of Repetition; The Inner Game of Hypnotic Writing; Imitation Sugar Is Sweet, Too!; How to Jump-Start the Muse; How to Nail Your Reader's Attention; How to Make Your Writing Walk, Talk, and Breathe; Give Me Some Meat!; A Writing Lesson from the World's Greatest Hypnotist; Electrifying Tips for Creating Breakthrough Writing; A Case against Perfection; How to Persuade Readers to Your Side; Warp Speed Editing Secrets Worth Killing For; How to Make Your Writing Sexy; How People Think; How to Create Hypnotic Stories; How to Control the "Command Center" in Your Prospect's Mind; The One Hypnotic Command That Always Works; What I learned from The Sea Wolf; Your Turning Point Message; What Everyone Will Always Read; Your Connotation Is Showing; What Are My Secrets For Writing Hypnotic Selling Stories?; Hypnotic Blogging; Reminders as Triggers; How to Change Average Writing into Hypnotic Writing; 30 Ways to Write a Hypnotic Headline; Hypnotic Openings; Hypnotic Quiz; My Three Biggest Secrets; How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?; How to Change Perception; At Last! The Joe Vitale Hypnotic Writing Formula; A New Hypnotic Copy Checklist; The Five Secret Laws of Hypnotic Persuasion; The Seven Most Hypnotic Books of All Time; The Hypnotic Writing Formula; Your Challenge; Appendix - Hypnotic Emails; Bibliography; Index; About Dr. Joe Vitale; Bonus Offer

Now, for a 260 page book, that's a lot of chapters! Each one is just a few pages in length and tries to stay focused on the small snippet that's suggested by the title. There *is* a lot of good material in here on how to write compelling copy that catches and holds a reader's attention. But I couldn't seem to get past a few things that tended to lessen what I expected to get out of the book. For one, the whole "hypnotic" theme seems to get old after awhile. I understand that's the hook, but after awhile it's a bit of a stretch to think of everything he does as hypnotic. The other issue, and probably the bigger of the two, was that there was too much hype about what was to be revealed "in a few chapters" as well as the focus on his personal copy examples (which felt like thinly-veiled self-promotion pieces). The chapters seemed to be random thoughts about the subject, but there was no apparent structure or direction that let me know where I was in the process. It was as if the secret was to be revealed in the next few pages, only to find another promise of the secrets in a couple more chapters... Once I finally got to the At Last! chapter, I had lost the cohesive thread to how this style of writing all fit together...

Overall, this is a tough book for me to review and rate. I think it's a great idea with a lot of merit. I think it could have been done in fewer pages with a better structure, however. But perhaps then it wouldn't have been as hypnotic... :)

You could do a lot worse than follow Joe Vitale's advice on writing smoking hot copy. He feeds imaginations with his words and is kind enough to share his advice for a mere fraction of the dues he's paid throughout his life to command this skill. He's in a class all his own. Buy the book if you want to have your customers buy your products. With Joe's help your words are your brush, and your customers' imaginations your canvas.

This is the fist book I bought on this subject and I did find it to be quite helpful. Helpful for writing any kind of letter, helpful for web-sites, helpful for blogs and helpful for novels.

The author touches on everything you need to know, when it comes to writing hypnotically. One thing he seems to do though, is state the same thing in different ways, in different chapters. I am guessing this book could be rearranged and edited down to half it's size.

Overall though I would highly recommend it to anyone who has something to communicate in writing. The book also has some good references to other writers and what they have to offer. Buy it.

Joe V's original claim to fame circa 1995, revised, expanded, and updated, this is a materpiece of marketing and copy writng advice. The entire book is written in hypnotic style, and will be a quick read - you will find it very hard to put down!
What is hypnotic writing? Nothing more than breaking the trance that most of us walk around in all the time, getting the reader's attention, then captivating them and persuading them that they will be much better off if they choose and use your products/services. It is relationship marketing with an added edge...and indispensable to budding marketers and seasoned pros alike. And no, I'm not an affiliate - just hypnotized by Joe V's style...
