Great book to start your business with.

I read at least 1 business book every week and your "Book Yourself Solid" book was an awesome read. No fluff, cut through the crap and delivered great content that works in the real world. This book ranks as a MUST-READ for anyone who wants to maximize their potential. Michael provides a step-by-step process that simplifies the daunting task of marketing your business (no matter what field you're in) and even get in touch with yourself during the process. The key to making Michael's process work has **everything** to do with the free, downloadable workbook that accompanies Book Yourself Solid. Everyone with a career--not just entrepreneurs--owes it to themselves to experience the Book Yourself Solid way. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

I purchased Book Yourself Solid because I was interested in expanding my therapy practice. But when I got to the part where the author asked what I would say if someone asked what I did I realized that this is much more about who I am and what inspires me than about selling generic counseling. Instead of saying that I'm a therapist who works with individuals and couples, I'm telling people that "I help couples rekindle the magic of their relationships." And "I help victims of violence feel safe again - and it happens very quickly."
This book is tightly written, every chapter is short, concise and builds on the last. As I read I did the exercises and by the time I had finished reading I was already marketing myself in a new way and it didn't feel like marketing. In fact, I had a different sense of myself and my work because my work more reflects who I am. Whatever you are doing, or starting, or thinking about starting, if it's a one on one service business, get this book. After 25 years of Sales & Marketing experience I have read hundreds of books and if I could only keep one this would be it. If you don't get a 1000 fold return on your investment immediately you didn't read the book or you should think about another career. Stop reading and buy this book now!

I have read a lot of marketing books and this is the best so far. It combines so much valuable information in one book. I wish I read this one first and skipped many others.

I have been in business for over ten years now, and I just came across this book recently, on my friend's blog Leadership Turn and in the Internet Business Mastery Academy. It sounded like I didn't need it, because I am already booked WAY solid in my small landscaping business.
But I went to Michael's site and downloaded a free chapter from him, and loved what I read so much that I knew I'd benefit from the book. First of all, even though I have been in business for a long time, I didn't have a good business mind when I began, so I have made a lot of mistakes. This book is wonderful, because it is helping me fill in the blanks of my business and have the confidence to make choices about who I want for a client, what work I wish to do for the client, and what makes me special - the reasons that clients select me over my competitors (or should!). This is a thorough overview, with really helpful exercises in each chapter which forced me to make real progress already in my business. Port shows concrete ways of getting your mind in the right place so that you can succeed in business. As someone who has had the total wrong mindset in the past, I can tell you that every bit of progress I have made on my mindset has showed in increased profits and happiness. Not only does Michael focus on attitude and how to think about yourself and your business, he offers concrete suggestions for improving your image and how people perceive you, for creating products and engaging in experiences which will help you present yourself as a leader in your field, and step-by-step instructions for how to really ramp up your business success. Since I have been in business for many years, I am not doing every exercise, but the ones I have chosen to do have been enormously helpful. I'd recommend this book to those who are either in the beginning years of their business, or who, like me, started their business with no real vision or plan and need some help getting it on track. Make sure you commit to doing the exercises and taking it slowly - it is really worth it. Don't miss Beyond Booked Solid once you have finished with this one. Even though I became an entrepreneur in 1996 by launching my company, and have read numerous books about marketing my services, Michael Port presented promotional ideas and strategies that helped me. Right away, I re-examined my niche and how I describe my services to prospective clients.
During one of my visits to a medical office as a patient, a nurse's assistant noticed that I was reading Book Yourself Solid. She asked me to describe what it was about. When I gave her a short summary, she asked next, "Why are you reading it? What is your line of work?" My answer flowed easily, using the pattern Michael proposed. Too, I applaud the writing style--simple language, sprinkled occasionally with relevant, tasteful humor. Port illustrates his points skillfully. An entrepreneurial friend had encouraged me to buy this book. I'm glad I followed his advice. I would welcome an opportunity to attend one of Michael Port's seminars, to hear additional marketing guidelines. His sharpest suggestion about sales: Replace the ABC of "Always be closing" with the ABC of "Always be communicating." The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life! I found this book to be more on the "basic" side for experienced business people. However, I can see how it would be quite beneficial for someone that may not have years of experience and/or who is starting their career or own business endeavor. The chapters on "referral strategy" and "web strategy" are important since even experienced business people sometimes forget the value of each of these two avenues to business success. While one star is shown, I do believe it merits more than one star, however, I was unable to make that change during the edit stage of this review.

I just did not find this book useful. It seemed to be quite elementary and I do not see how using the methods outlined in this book would enable anyone or company to be booked solid. Thus the title may be far reaching.

Rather than classify this tome as a book, I would name it a work book. Michael Port shows that building a business is hard work -- but all worth in if you are chasing a dream -- and this book offers no short cuts. I'm balancing this book with a hectic schedule but know in the end I will have a better career as a result. Recommended!

This I got suckered by the title. After the first few chapters - with NO real information - I gave up. I've run a business for 20 years, hoping to gain some tips to getting more clients. I wasted my money on this.

Tired of thinking small? I know for me traditional marketing and sales disengages me as a consumer and as an entrepreneur. You should be looking at this book to see what marketing techniques are good for you. I truly believe that marketing and sales is best when you yourself develop your own style. Book Your Self Solid gives you a great start on thinking about what marketing and selling is best for you as an entrepreneur.

I am extremely impressed with just how step-by-step and detailed Michael Port is at helping us define the mission of our business, finding the ideal customer/client and then helping us determine the most profitable strategies for marketing to our clients.
Book Yourself Solid is divided into three Modules: One - Your Foundation Two - Building Trust and Credibility Three - Book Yourself Solid 7 Core Self-Promotion Strategies I was particularly impressed with Chapters 2, 3 and 4 --- although, you'll find the information throughout the entire book to be extremely valuable. All three modules have worksheets and hands-on activities to take you step-by-step through your business building process. I was impressed with his thoroughness! Whether you're in network marketing, a storefront, a one-person show or even contemplating starting a business - this book will help you increase your customer base and get your marketing imagination working over time. Be ready to sit and work this book. You're going to want to devote time and effort so you can give this book the justice it deserves. If you are serious about making your business a moneymaking success and/or taking your business to the next level, then reading and working this book will be well worth your time and effort. "Book Yourself Solid" is a gold mine. It is hard to believe that this kind of book exists. Michael Port shows in many details the road to walk on in order to start a joyful fulfilling life by TRULY CARING FOR OTHERS.... and being paid for it. This book is giving me the permission - or giving me the command - to share what I know, with no calculation and no expectation of return, for the great benefit of all, myself included. It is giving me back the freedom to be the person I am. It is not a reading book, but a WORKBOOK that I believe will change many people's life. Thank you so very much Michael!

This book is written by a man who has sold NOTHING other than his own books and lecture courses. If you're like me, I don't want a con-man posing as an "expert" selling worthless advice -- I want workable ideas from someone who sells for a living and HONESTLY knows what's what.
This author has nothing in common with those of us selling in the real world. I have been in direct sales for 25 years and In my opinion the author is just one more "expert" who knows very little about selling -- except for what he has read from other "expert" sales trainers and re-hashed with a touch of New Age mumbo-jumbo. I took just the FIRST idea from Book Yourself Solid (Always Have Something To Invite Them To) and used it to create free weekly computer skills webinars ( http://www.pcpowertips.com/webinars.html ) that are building a loyal following, increasing my email list, helping me find a niche to fill, creating products people want, and making me money. Michael is the real thing, and his ideas WORK.
