This book covers Stage II of iPhone operation. That is to say, it's the book for those who have already read & understood the (nonexistent) clear, concise, and complete user's manual. More specifically, this book is nearly entirely focused on adding and managing digital content to your iPhone, to the exclusion of the rest.
This book will *not* help you understand how to navigate the iPhone & iTune, etc, etc. It's litteraly the 2nd book you read. If you buy it to help you get familiar with your new device, you are simply not going to get what you need. As a side note, the author is quite generous with his brand of geeky humor. I have nothing against geeky humor, but that one didn't agree with my system. I would urge potential buyers to take a quick look at Ihnathko's blog and make sure they are compatible... If you are a power user of iTune, this is a good book. Otherwise, it might leave you confused. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-20 05:33:12 EST)

I think Andy did a nice job here (the ramblings are real - but not a major distraction). The book is more than just what the iPhone can do - but a rather creative melding of the iPhone with the Web and other resources. While the iPhone applications market is humming - and a few of the ideas not as valuable - it's the creative thought behind the suggestions that I think warrants the purchase.

...but that is what makes his books interesting. The problem with so many "how to" books is that they're boring as watching cheese ferment and I end up falling asleep in bed after barely reading a page. I've never had this problem with any of Andy's books, from the OSX Tiger one, the iPod one or this one. He cracks jokes which helps to keep you engaged with the material, something very few 'Dummies' or 'Complete Guide to' books do.
This book is great for showing you how to do things with the iPhone that it wasn't really intended to do. It's sort of a book on how to 'hack it' without having to actually 'hack it'. If you don't know how to get your email or how to put music on the iPhone, this is not the guide for you. However, if you're looking at your iPhone and wondering, "hmm, what other interesting stuff can I do with this while I wait for Apple to release Applications for it", then this is the perfect book. If you're still worried that you might not like the book's style, check out the authors website (his last name dot com) and read some of his review of tech gadgets. If you then think "OMG, I can't stand this guy" what is wrong with you? No seriously, if you find his reviews hard to follow, then this would not be the book for you. If you're looking for an instruction manual on the basics of the iPhone, this is not your book. Look up the owner's manual on the apple website for free or read one of the many other books on iPhone basics. If you're ready to take the next step in expanding your grasp of not only the iPhone, but also the entire web, this is your book. This book was exactly what I was looking for.
As others mentioned, this book does not describe some of the basic features of the iPhone, but assumes the reader already knows most of these things. It instead delves into how you can utilize web programs and iTunes to your advantage to overcome certain limitations of the iPhone. I have already ready some chapters several times and find new information every time. Andy Ihnatko has a humorous writing style and this was a very enjoyable read. I will continue to reference this book after I have finally retired it from the reading pile. I will definitely look forward to any future books by Mr. Ihnatko. If you are looking for a book to show you how to use the features of the iphone, this isn't the book for you. If you already know how to use it's standard feature and you're wondering what else can I do with this wonderful toy, then this is a great book. Not everything in it will be of interest to everybody, but there's something for everybody.

I think of myself as a person who understands technology easily. I usually find innovative ways to use things on my own. In this case I learned so many ways to use the iPhone which I had never even considered. Although it was humbling to realize I had missed so much, it is great to be exposed to so many innovative uses of the iPhone. I ended up with a better appreciation for the phone and the author.

The author of this book has a way of writing that attracts the reader, and wants to keep one reading. This book is not one of those boring manuals that will put you to sleep, one will begin learning from the first chapter, and what is read will always be remembered, cause you will have fun playing around on your iPhone while reading. This book is a must have for any iPhone owner, as it goes beyond the basics, and actually teaches you things you would not learn without reading this work, or by hanging out with someone that has read it.

I have purchased several iPhone books and they cover the subject well, however this book goes beyond the "user" manual. I enjoyed it.

Great information beyond the basics, excellent tips, fun and easy writing style. Have purchased five iPhone books for referrence or gifts and this one is by far the top of the pack.

Great book looking at things that the other books don't cover. Andy is also extremely funny as an author and a bit of an online celebrity as a regular on MacBreak Weekly.

This book is extremely hard to follow. You will have to listen to this guy ramble on and on about whatever he happened to be thinking about at the moment and then ah there is a bit of good information. Unless you really like andy and want to hear his wordy ramblings I do not recommend this book.

This book is difficult in the broad sense. After reading and loving iPhone the missing manual, this book is worthless. Not recommended.

As you may have noticed, this is the first review which gives this book less than five stars. It really let me down. Let me start with the most obvious and glaring omission from the book: if you look in the index, you will find a key word missing--"phone." That's right, even though I bought a book about the iPhone, there is not a word in this book about the phone part of the iPhone, how it works, using its features, entering contacts, adding pictures to contacts, etc. Those of you who have an iPhone know that you want to spend some time getting your "settings" correct--you know, your internet connection, phone settings, email settings, ipod settings, etc. Jump to the index to find the pages on settings--oops! Another word missing from the index. Not a word about setting the "settings" on your iPhone And you can go on and on.
What this book really is a bunch of short chapters which were probably written for other books, publications, or web sites before anyone ever even heard of the iPhone. The first part is about making smart playlists, a thing you learned when you bought your first ipod several years ago; then there's a nice chapter about how to rip cds, something you also learned when you bought your first ipod; then there's a nice chapter on how to rip dvds, something you learned when you bought your first post Handbrake computer. Lots of nice pages about the internet--bookmarks, web sites, etc. Are you getting the picture-lots of things that look like they were written a long, long time ago. Nothing about things like the iPhone's camera, its weather feature, its stock quote feature, its You-Tube feature, or a bunch of other features. The iPhone is quite a nifty gadget; too bad this book isn't really about it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-01 18:40:48 EST)

I have had my iPhone since July, and thought I was quite savvy about what I could do with it. I have anticipated Andy's book, and figured I would learn a few tips, but WOW! I have learned tons of fantastic tips on maximizing the space, cleverly using playlists, new ways to put videos on the iphone and my ipod, etc. I tell everyone who owns a phone to invest in the book. Finally, it is the funniest "manual" I have ever read, Ihnatko has a quirky and clever sense of humor that makes reading this book a joy.

This is definitely the book to get if you want to take control of your iPhone. It contains a wide variety of extremely useful tips and tricks, and is a hilarious read from start to finish. Thanks Andy!

Wonderful book!! Andy Ihnatko has put together a book that is absolutely the best layout, writing style, and content that you could ask for in an iPhone book. I thumbed through at least a half dozen other iPhone books several months ago and found maybe a handful of new things in them. Andy's book is packed full of good and relavent info that is useful and NOT simply how to use the iPhone to check email, listen to music, browse the web, and all the other tasks that anybody can figure out on their own after five minutes with an Apple product. Also, Andy's sense of humor keeps things fun.

This book by Andy Ihnatko is one of the most entertaining tech books I've ever read. Not only is Andy's writing style quite personal and irreverent, but the tips he includes can help even power users (like me)! Again, a must buy for those who want to get more than the base functionality out of the iPhone. Recommended!

I am only 50 pages into this book and I have not only learned tons of cool stuff, I am laughing my you-know-what off (people are starting to stare at me on the subway).
This guy needs to write manuals for every kind of computer software and hardware out there. Because this is the only one that I will probably actually read cover to cover and even learn a few things from! Great tips. Great insight. And fun to read. Ever heard of a technical manual like that? Me neither. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-10 03:28:39 EST)

I didn't expect to learn anything new from this book but I'm a fan of the Apple Phoneshow (Scott Bourne - Podango) and Andy is a regular on the show. I enjoy his commentary so the book purchase seemed like a "no brainer". I'm not disappointed. The writing style is fun and entertaining -- as if you're talking tech with one of your funnier friends. The book is also visually pleasing with nice layout, screen prints and quality paper. What really impressed me though is the content. Andy didn't slap together yet another gadget book but created a thoughtful and compelling tutorial for a huge number of things you can do with your iPhone (without bricking it) that are both useful and entertaining. Both Mac and PC users will find plenty of opportunities to extend their iPhones.
It is difficult for me to say which tip I liked the best since so many are genuinely useful and most of them give me another good reason to stop lugging my laptop everywhere I go. Buy this book if you want to get the absolute most from your iPhone. It's also the perfect holiday gift for your iPhone fanatic friends - it will keep them busy for the rest of the year. Everything you didn't want to know about the iPhone. However not much on the current software, Apple bricking and 3rd party developer support since it was written before all this stuff happened. Good luck Andy!
