| A Mother for Choco (Paperstar) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Choco wishes he had a mother, but who could she be? He sets off to find her, asking all kinds of animals, but he doesn't meet anyone who looks just like him. He doesn't even think of asking Mrs. Bear if she's his mother-but then she starts to do just the things a mommy might do. And when she brings him home, he meets her other children-a piglet, a hippo, and an alligator-and learns that families can come in all shapes and sizes and still fit together.
Keiko Kasza's twist on the "Are you my mother?" theme has become one of the most highly recommended stories about adoption for children. |

This is a great book to start my newly adopted great niece's library. The prompt arrival allowed me plenty of time to wrap it for the baby shower. Thank you!

My 9 month son adores this book. It is a cute, sweet story for any little one and I think he will continue to love it for a long time. His 4 year older brother likes to join in too when I read it.

Please get this book. We are adopting and it has been great to read to our kids and eventually to our son. I've bought several to give to friends. It is great for adopting and non-adopting families. Great!

love this book. it gently opens a discussion about what being a mom to a child really means. we dont always "look" like our children and this book addresses that. specifically good for adopted children.

I absolutely adore this book. My sister gave it to us before we traveled to China to adopt our daughter. She's just over two now and has read this book with me dozens of times. We both love the illustrations, and even at a very young age, she "gets" the idea that Choco finds a mother in Mrs. Bear, regardless of the fact that they look nothing alike. (I confess I still get misty every time I read it.) The message is delightfully done--not schmaltzy, not overdone. I would recommend this to any family--adoptive or not.

I love this book and my adopted daughter loves this book. Granted she is about to turn 2, however, she still will pick this book up for me to read regularly. I have recommended this book as well to the adoption forums I belong too. Great message we are all different and it is about the love.

My three-year-old adopted son from Ethiopia loves this book! Warning, though, the grumpy Mrs. Walrus has kind of freaked him out. I have to read her line with a really happy lilt to my voice. Depending on how sensitive your child is you may want to edit Mrs. Walrus's words/tone the first time you read it to your child. I don't think my son can imagine how/why an "adult" would say to a child, "Now go away. Leave me alone."
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and he has, a few times since then, talked about being sad when he had no mommy and no daddy in Ethiopia. He was just a few months old when he was adopted and was in excellent care while living there so I'm guessing that this book has put that idea into his head. Not a bad thing...just be aware that it might bring out emotions in your child that he or she hasn't discussed before. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-12 23:56:15 EST)

It is a great adoption book that both the parents and the children will enjoy. It is a simple but well done story about a bird that is looking for his parents. My daughter loves it.

I love this book! It chokes me up each time I read it to my daughter. I gave about 5 copies away at Christmas, all to my two-year-old daughter's two-year-old friends, so that they can have an early and sweet introduction to the concept of adoption. A wonderful book.

This has been a great book for helping broach the adoption topic with our 2.5 year old son. It's a very sweet story of a little bird looking for a mommy and asking lots of animals who don't quite fit. When he finds his mommy, there is such a sense of happiness and contentment that pervades the pages, it's really wonderful.

My daughter and I love reading this book together. She laughs at the pictures and then we compare how we are alike, and how we are different. Very positive and encouraging. I recommend this book for anyone with adopted children who don't look exactly like their parents!

I got this book for my daughter who was adopted.
She is almost 8 years old and still loves it. It's a simple read but makes the point you don't have to look like your family to be a family. Wish parents would read this to thier non-adopted children. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 09:03:38 EST)

This book is a great way to gently introduce the concept of adoption. The book reinforces that what matters is not whether family members look alike, but how they treat and love each other. The only thing I am not crazy about is that Choco seems to start out with no caregiver at all. The illustrations are beautiful, and both my kids enjoyed this book.

I think this is a simple and lovely story. My daughter is 4 years old and adopted from China. She liked it a lot. It gets the message across that it's love and relationships that make a family and not necessarily looks, but without being in your face about it. I recommend it.

Another great book to help explain adoption, particularly transracial adoption, to very young children.
Little Choco is all alone in the world. God only knows what happened to his first mother. In any event, he's looking for a mother who looks just like him, but alas, cannot find one. Mrs. Giraffe doesn't have wings, Mrs. Penguin doesn't have plump cheeks, Mrs. Walrus doesn't have striped blue feet. He sees Mrs. Bear picking apples and he KNOWS she can't be his mother because she looks nothing like him. He starts to cry and lo and behold, Mrs. Bear mothers him. She kisses him just like a mother would, she hugs him just like a mother would, she cheers him up by singing and dancing with him, just like a mother would. Eventually, she invites him home for some apple pie. Turns out, she has some other children, a baby hippo ("hippy") and a baby alligator ("allie"). Choco decides to stay for apple pie and more, happy that his new mother looks just the way she is. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 09:03:38 EST)

This is an awesome book about adoption and is a great way to introduce all children to the diversity of families. I've bought this book for nieces, nephews and neighbors in preparation for my daughter entering our family through adoption. It's been a big hit!

Our daughter has asked us to read this book many times. It's cute, sweet and funny and very simple to understand. She's 3 so she probably doesn't get the point--parents don't have to look like their children to love them--but she enjoys the different animal characters and sings/plays along as I read it to her.

My 2 year old really likes this book. We bought the board book so she could play with it as much as she likes, and it doesn't get destroyed. We sometimes substitute words, so that it reads as "A Father For Choco"; we like to highlight both mom and dad (it works for us!).

This book is great for families of international adoption. It teaches children that parents, children, brothers, and sisters do not need to look alike in order to be a family. Our children love it!

This is an amazing story, gentle and sweet without being blatant. I have loved books my whole life, and now I get to share them with our daughter, whom we adopted from China. Books such as the Suess classic "Are you my Mother?" take on a whole other tone when your child does not look like you. But then you can find books like "A Mother for Choco" and the world seems a little brighter!
Our daugther is 3 now, and she still loves reading this book. We have already begun talking about her birth story, using this book as an opening. She began the discussion by saying, "Mommy, you have curly hair, I have silky hair, but I'm still glad you're my Mommy!" (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-05 08:54:24 EST)

Our recently adopted son really love this book and will often want us to read it to him. I am not sure he understands the concepts, but he loves this book more than any other we have.

This little book has become a classic amongst the adoption community. Choco goes in search of a mother, finally finding himself a character who can offer him everything he's been searching for and, although his new mother doesn't look like him, he finds happiness with her and his new "assorted" siblings. Warm and fuzzy and offers gentle opportunities to open the lines of communication about adoption.
Highly recommended! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-05 08:54:24 EST)
