Secret affairs, hunky gardeners, and housewives desperate enough to bare it all... welcome to Magnolia Lane, TV's newest hit show. As the new wardrobe assistant, shoe designer Maddie Springer is in fashion heaven. But then a young starlet is found dead. Now it's up to Maddie to sift through a secretive leading lady, an actor on the verge of a nervous breakdown, a sexy cyber scandal, and one tabloid reporter who'll stop at nothing to get the story of the century. Not to mention her tangles with the infuriatingly sexy lead detective, Jack Ramirez. In a biz where lies and deception earn Emmys, Maddie will have to play the role of a lifetime to catch Hollywood's hottest killer. But if she doesn't watch her step, Maddie's fifteen minutes of fame just may be her last.

I have read all of the Gemma Halliday books in the Maddie Springer series and can enthusiastically recommend them all. I think it is worth reading the books in order (there are only four so far), although I will say that Undercover in High Heels has been my favorite. I am hoping that over time Ms. Halliday will be as prolific as Janet Evanovich in her Stephanie Plum series.
The Maddie Springer murder/mysteries are well paced. I am not surprised that a TV series is in the works because the characters are very engaging and the storylines are hip and fun. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 09:40:18 EST)

This is a fun, quick read. Gemma Halliday writes quite well, and it's easy to see the story through her words.

This is a great new series. This is a fun mystery book that has relatable characters. I read this book in 4 days and couldn't wait to get to the next story. These aren't serious mystery stories but there are great twists and turns.

I finally gave Gemma Halliday's books a try - the first and only so far (but hopefully not for long) was UNDERCOVER IN HIGH HILLS. I couldn't stop reading it until I was done with it. Fun characters and plot. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a book with romance, action and funny parts. If you haven't read a Gemma Halliday book you should pick one up and read it. You'll love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this outing from Gemma Halliday... much more than I did the two previous books. Not that they weren't good, but I liked this book better.
My favorite part? Felix! I'm so glad that Ms. Halliday brought him back in this book. He is my favorite character, aside from Maddie and Marco. I did manage to guess who the bad guy was about half-way through the book, but that didn't bother me overmuch because I enjoyed the rest of the ride to get to the end. I don't think that I figured "who done it" because of any holes in the story, I think I've just seen too many movies that have had a similar storyline. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one in the series, Alibi in High Heels. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-25 08:50:38 EST)

Maddie Springer isn't a PI and she isn't an officer of the law either, but she acts like one. Trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes and, if it doesn't, she makes trouble for herself. In this book Maddie and her friend Dana find themselves on the set of 'Magnolia Lane', a hit television series. Murder and mayhem soon follow Maddie to the set and, despite the danger, she continues pursuing leads and people of interest. Her boyfriend, Jack Ramirez, is a detective with the local police but, of course, Maddie is the one to solve the crime. In order to figure out who is responsible for the on-set murders, Maddie enlists the help of several people, including her reporter friend from several earlier books, Felix. Her romance with Ramirez also goes to a new level in this book but, Maddie seems much better suited to Felix. The book is a combo of chick-lit and light mystery; a fun read but zero substance.

Gemma Halliday's new installment of fashion-conscious sluethette Maddie Springer is a knee-slapping adventure, a romantic-mystery romp of hilarious proportions. A fresh story that offers solid sleuthing, this is a novel that'll satisfy romance lovers and mystery fans everywhere.
Maddie Springer, shoe designer extraordinarie, is ecstatic. She's landed a gig as wardrobe assistant on television's steamiest show, "Magnolia Lane" - her all-time favorite. She gets more than she bargained for when a cast member is killed, and suddenly she's plunged into a mystery leaving threatening packages on her doorstep while menacing SUVs run her off the road. To make matters worse, she's on the outs with sexy "sort-of-boyfriend" homicide detective Jack Ramirez because she keeps messing up his investigations, despite her best intentions. However, as only she can design the right pair of heels for any occasion, only she has the chutzpah to solve this mystery - if she can survive more dead bodies, a sleazy tabloid reporter, scandalous YouTube stardom, and her own brand of peculiar fortune. This is Maddie Springer, though - the kinda-sorta "femme fatal" who once defended herself by stabbing a suspect's breast implant. She'll do anything to see a mystery through. It's rare to see a romantic-mystery that's so funny, but this is certainly one of them. Maddie Springer is one of those characters everyone loves, which explains why the USA network has optioned the rights for a series based on the character. Halliday's narrative is fast-paced and knowledgeable of pop culture, making Maddie Springer a "Versace" Nancy Drew everyone can appreciate. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-03 09:11:05 EST)

Undercover in High Heels is a very fun and humorous mystery. The plot is simple enough and the mystery was very obvious, but what really makes this book is the great characters.
Maddie is spunky, tenacious, and great fun. She certainly isn't qualified for the roll she assumes, which causes her to stumble through the mysteries and mostly solves them by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, this adds to the overall humor of the book. All the secondary characters are also great. Jack Ramirez is a sexy and realistic character who cares about Maddie, even if he isn't sure how to deal with her antics. Dana, Maddie's best friend, is a sex addict trying to get help for her addiction which adds for some funny situations and moments. We also get to see more into the Tabloid reporter, Felix. He is the mysterious character who Maddie isn't quite sure how to react to. Maddie thinks she dislikes Felix, but it seems more like she doesn't wish to accept that she does actually like him. I am waiting to see what happens between Felix and Maddie, as there is some tension between the two that hopefully will be explored in later novels. Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I am really liking this series. Granted, there are some incidents within this book that seems too convenient and sometimes not realistic, but the lightheartedness this book is going for seems to make it work. So if you are looking for a simple romantic-mystery with a delicious guy, then I highly recommend Undercover in High Heels for a nice lazy weekend. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-29 17:06:02 EST)

with a lot of comedy. Maddie and Ramirez still have a sizzling romance, or do they? Maddie is so insecure she starts checking up on Ramirez and gets him in a lot of trouble. She and Dana get jobs on a TV studio to try and help Ramirez with hilarious results.
There are two mystery storylines going on here. Maddie has a stalker, and at the same time she's investigating a murder on the set. These story lines cross and interact in interesting ways with each other. Maddie is still working on her children's shoe designs and is developing her own line. One of her shoe designs becomes an instant hit in an unusual way. I don't want to ruin the fun so you'll have to read it for yourself. If you like light comedic mysteries with a hot guy thrown in you'll love this third book in the series. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-29 17:06:02 EST)

TV soap Magnolia Lane's wardrobe assistant Maddie Springer becomes jealous when she finds her boyfriend police detective Jack Ramirez with an amazon at the cabana Club after he broke a date with her. She confronts him leading to an incident in which guns are drawn and Isabel the amazon places Maddie in a hold that Hulk Hogan would be proud to have used. The aftermath is Ramirez is temporarily demoted to celebrity bodyguard duty as Isabel was providing evidence against her boyfriend, but instead has gone MIA.
To atone for her interfering with his assignment, Maddie enlists her best friend Dana to uncover the identity of who is sending threatening notes to the soap's star Mia Carletto. When Mia is found dead and Maddie begins to receive threatening notes, the case turns personal. However, as she and Dana dig for clues in spite of Ramirez profusely telling her to stay out of the investigation, tabloid reporter Feliz Dunn will do anything including risking the life of Maddie to get the story. As always no one can get into more trouble in high heels faster than Maddie can as she leaps into one mess after another or causes the mess. Lighthearted inane fun, readers will appreciate the over the Hollywood Hills sign heroine's antics to make up for the turmoil she caused Ramirez by trying to solve the murder case chick lit style. This actually means causing more tsuris for Ramirez, who realistically has lost patience with Maddie. Harriet Klausner (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-11 03:00:08 EST)

Insecurity over her relationship with hot cop Ramirez leads Maddie Springer to do something frankly stupid that results in him being demoted and angry with her. She is not so sure that the demotion is all that bad; after all, it lets him work as a bodyguard on the set of her favorite night time soap, Magnolia Lane. Hoping to help him as well see the stars, she gets a job as a wardrobe assistant there. Naturally, trouble soon begins. The female lead's stand-in is murdered, so naturally, Maddie feels like she just has to try and solve the case. Soon, she's getting grotesque death threats, finding herself in unusual positions, and generally re-inventing chaos as she goes. Jealousy surely has put Maddie in a mess this time!
**** Fast paced humor makes the story flow easily. Ramirez is an intriguing hero, which always makes things better. Though at times the mirth tends to override the murder angle, if you enjoy a good, screwball comedy with a hint of mystery, you'll like this. **** (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-04 09:07:59 EST)
