This book is very helpful if you are looking for a Con Law study aid or explanation book. Many of my classmates also felt they had a better understanding of Con Law while using this book with the class.

If anyone is taking Constitutional Law and is using the Chemerinsky case book, this treatise is a MUST have. You can actually get along the semester perfectly without the big case book and just reading this treatise. It explains things way better than the big book. Unless you need to know the cases straight from the language in the case book, this is just enough to do very well in this class.

This book cuts out all of the "bull" from your textbook and just tells you what you need to know about the cases and will probably even tell you what your teacher is going to lecture about in class.

This is a very helpful study aid for Constitutional law, and believe it or not, it does qualify as concise. The topic is obviously expansive, and the book does a decent job of hitting the critical points without waxing too discursive.

This book is a great supplement, even if you don't have Chemerinsky's casebook. Concise case summaries and great background information, I highly recommend this hornbook.

As stated in many reviews on this text, Chermensky's book will help you make sense of the often times confusing aspects of Constituional Law.
I definately recommend this text to any COn law student (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-29 04:25:41 EST)

After getting frustrated with the dense, yet completely random, Stone casebook, I picked up this treatise on numerous recommendations. It's pretty great; definitely one of the better law study aids and very well suited for explaining the theoretical underpinnings of constitutional law. My class is a seminar, making it more like a grad-school course than a traditional rote memorization/outlining type deal, and I found Chemerinsky to be a big help in clarifying confusing concepts. Plus, it's actually fun to read (for a law book).

I am using Chemerinsky's text in Con Law as a first year and it's so difficult to understand! This book has saved my life, it is easy to understand and goes into debt in the areas that I most need it. Everyone finding Con Law to be difficult to use this book.

If you use the Chemerinsky casebook, this is a lifesaver. It goes more in-depth about the cases and concepts behind the cases, but in a very clear, easy-to-understand manner. When I first saw it, I dismissed it because it is as big as the casebook. However, a friend urged me to take his, so I did; I was pleasantly surprised at its usefulness. I recommended it to a friend b/c I liked it so much, and she bought it and made it a point to let me know how glad she is she got the book. I planned on buying the Highcourt Case summary to go with the Chemerinsky casebook, but with this supplement, I don't think there really is any need to spend another $30+ on it, even though the Highcourt summaries are great. This will give you a summary like the Highcourt supplement, and then go beyond. For me, this book makes it easier to follow along in class discussions, as well as to make meaningful contributions to class discussions.

If you are a 1L taking Constitutional Law, GET THIS BOOK. As a 1L, I found the Con Law cases (especially the older ones) hard to understand and confusing. Chemerinsky writes in clear and concise language and really helps point out the issues and underlying implications of Supreme Court decisions to 1Ls who are unused to reading such long decisions. I recommend reading this book simultaneously with your case book just to make sure you "got it."

It is hard to add to what the previous reviewers have stated. Howecver, simply adding another confirmation to a prior review would not do this book justice. Therefore, I felt compelled to write a seperate review.
Without this book, I would not have passed Con Law. This is indeed an excellent book in that it puts the different parts of the subject into context. The author does a great job of clearly trying to explain what the reasoning is behind the concepts and how the whole subject is supposed to fit together. Unlike most other books, the author actually is successful in doing this - so by the time a chapter is finished, the reader has a very good grasp of the topic. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Chemerinsky takes the most difficult and complex con law issues and explains them with such clarity: "this is what the court said...this is what it means." I had a great Con Law professor, but I doubt I would have passed without Chemerinsky. In fact, I bought this book because my professor told me she refers to it when she wants to brush up on a particular issue.
Further, this is a book you'll want to keep. Substantive due process, equal protection, and other con law issues pop up in most areas of law. You'll be glad to have this book handy when they do. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-03 08:24:19 EST)

I stopped reading my Con law casebook about 2 weeks into class and started reading this instead. This book saved me from certain failure in this class. The single best thing about this book is that he puts everything in context. I think failing to connect the dots and understand how concepts are related to each other is what makes this course so difficult. Erwin is the man!
I used the older edition, which worked out just fine and was much cheaper. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-05-22 23:45:57 EST)

This supplement is saving my life this quarter. It was highly recommended to me and I highly recommend it to all first year law students. 2Ls and 3Ls taking advanced ConLaw classes also might find it useful as he includes course material from those classes.

Chemerinsky's assessment of constitutional case law is brief, clear and easy to read. The book itself is beautifully structured and contains every critical case up to 2006.
Only one Caveat: Chemerinsky is a highly lauded and respected Constitutional scholar, but his viewpoint is his own and it comes out in his case redaction and descriptions. Chemerinksy is perfect for tying the bigger picture together, but it always is a good idea to read the cases yourself. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-05-19 07:30:36 EST)

I would give it more stars if I could!!!
This is the godsend that will let you pass Con Law with a decent grade! I swear it on my life. If you are a 1L or a 1L to be you HAVE HAVE HAVE to buy this book. Especially if your casebooks is Sullivan Gunther massive, 6 pound book. Seriously, that thing might as well be written in an alient tongue. If you can, I suggest you read your Chemerinsky over the break before your classes start and you'll go into Con Law with a definitive advantage. Buy it!!! It saved my life! If you use Chemerinsky's text, this book is awesome for explaining the same concepts the casebook covers. Not sure why Chemerinsky doesn't just explain it this clearly in the notes before and after the cases (probably to sell these supplements). This book is clear and easy to use. If you are confused about con law and have the chimerinsky book, this is a great book.

a lot of people swear by this book, but honestly, i wasn't that impressed.
for one thing, it's organized by topic/subject area, so the same case is often mentioned in several areas. this means that if you want to read about a particular case, you have to check 10 different places in the book and try to construct a holistic picture of the case in your mind. this also means that you don't really get a chronologica/historical picture of evolving jurisprudence because everything is so fragmented. also, the treatments of cases and topics are very cursory. it's hard to get a grasp on concepts or really figure out what was going on with a case or with a line of cases in a particular area when everything gets a one-sentence summary. it all seems kind of rushed and thrown together, and i often found i was more confused after going to this book for guidance. i know it's hard to effectively summarize and review constitutional law, because it's an extremely vast subject (as evidenced by the fact that con law casebooks are usually over 1000 pages). this book was a valiant attempt at doing so. and maybe if i had actually used the chemerinsky casebook in my class, i would've benefited more from the study guide. overall, though, i just didn't find this study guide that helpful. This is a great treatise. Lays out all of the concepts and explains very well. It does however cover more in each section than your professor probably does. If you read before class with your other assigned reading it really helps you to understand.

This adds a lot of material that has been covered by the Supreme Court in the interim period between the current publication and that of the second edition (2002). All of the praise from the prior edition can be properly bestowed upon this one as well; it essentially consists of the same material with the new cases inserted. Also, prior language that mused about the direction that a particular issue would take in the coming years have been resolved in some instances, so those parts have been replaced with Chemerinsky's excellent chronological and ideological thread of cases, up to the end of the last Court session. This book, more clearly than most, gives the average (and below-average) law student an easy-to-follow guide through the maze that is the first year Constitutional law course. A great help, and a necessary purchase.

This is a good supplement to own, especially if you have the Chemerinsky casebook. This book follows along nicely with the casebook, although some paragraphs are duplicated verbatim in the casebook and this book. Overall, the supplement does a good job of explaining the concepts better than the casebook, or any other supplement out there. Although, some may argue that some of the sections give cursory analysis to the policy and issues involved; I think it gives enough depth that a student can do well in an exam.
