| French Soldier in Egypt 1798-1801: The Army of the Orient (Warrior) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
This book concentrates on the dramatic experiences of Napoleon's Army of the Orient in Egypt and the Holy Land. The fighting of the Mamelukes and Turks are covered in depth, detailing desert combat, siege warfare, cavalry skirmishes and the suppression of uprisings. It examines the French treatment of prisoners as well as the fate of captured Frenchmen, and describes caring for the wounded, outbreaks of bubonic plague, and the terrible retreat from Acre in 1799, in accounts by the men who were there. The experiences of infantry, cavalry and sea soldiers of Napoleon's Army of the Orient are brought vividly back to life.

This work is well-written, well-illustrated and makes liberal use of first-hand accounts to tell the story of Napoleon's campaign in Egypt. I've read several accounts of this campaign, both as part of a larger work on Napoleon and in articles and a book that dealt specifically with this one aspect of the Napoleonic Wars. I wish I had possessed this book as many of the issues discussed in those other works would have been made more clear with the addition of Mr. Crowdy's work.
One of the few drawbacks of this book, if it can really even be considered a drawback, is that it does not discuss the soldiers deployed with Napoleon in context of the larger revolutionary army of France. However, given the format of the Warrior series there's only so much to can cram into one book and there are plenty of other works which can provide this perspective. I highly recommend this book. A book of this type is really an important addition to the osprey series because it really focuses on what the conditions were like for the soldiers about Napoleon's ships as they sailed through the Mediterrean, fought in the desert etc...Also, I felt that the paintings were very vibrantly presented and well done on the whole. Moreover, I think it is an improvement that Osprey is making more of an effort to feature the work of artists interested in featuring historical/military subjects.
