A Classic in its own time The entire Chumash, newly reset, in one beautiful volume with a new, contemporary English translation of the Torah, faithful to Rashi and the classic Rabbinic commentators, and an anthologized commentary by a team of scholars, under the editorship of Rabbi Nosson Scherman. This commentary draws on the spectrum of biblical commentaries, from the Talmud, Midrash, and the classic Rabbinic commentators, and includes insights of contemporary greats. Also includes: Hebrew/Aramaic texts of Rashi and Onkelos, newly set according to the most accurate texts. Haftaros with new translation, and introductory comments introducing the haftarah and relating it to the Torah reading. The Five Megillos with translation and commentary. Comprehensive index. Lightweight, opaque, acid-free paper for decades of quality use. Special section for your own genealogy and family milestones. Ultra-reinforced binding, using the most durable materials. Elegantly gilded page heads. Ribbon place-marker. The Chumash of choice for synagogue and home! |

The are many "Bibles" on market but ArtScroll has the best! They have the best covers and commentaries. None compare. A close second is Gutnick but ArtScroll has been around much longer.

This book is beautiful and a blessing to have! This is my favorite Chumash by far (and I have many). The format of the book is easy to follow, and the Hebrew includes cantillation! I personally think that the commentary was great, especially considering the limited space the author had to work with.
Great book for Shabbat :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-04 08:55:07 EST)

As a traditional Catholic, I was searching for authentic Jewish commentary on the Old Testament and found this title through the Art Scroll publishing company. Boy, was I impressed!
Let me start by stating that the Chumash only contains the first five (5) books of the Bible - Genesis, Exodus, etc. It does not contain the remainder books of the Old Testament beyond the first five (5) books. This is commonly referred to as the "Torah" in Judaism. Also, there is no New Testament in this volume. Also, for the lay Catholic, don't confuse the word Torah with the word Tanach. The Torah is the first five (5) books only, whereas the Tanach is the entire Old Testament, including the Torah. On to the review: First, the text is very easy to read and understand. The translated text is in basic English, with Hebrew on the corresponding page opposite the English translation. This Chumash truly brings the Old Testament alive with its superb English translation. No more confusing terms, odd language, or outdated words to confuse the reader. Any unusual words are clearly defined and explained in the commentary. Some parts of the book contain illustrations and diagrams that are immensely helpful as well. By the same token, the text is very reverent and professionally written. You don't get the sense that the authors "dumbed down" the translation. I am comfortable using this Chumash as a study Bible, and a prayer book to meditate on the text. Secondly, the commentary is superb. It expands upon the historical context of the text, and gives the reader the background necessary to gain a deeper comprehension of the text. The commentary expands on the text at great length, giving great detail and explanation. This Chumash takes commentary from a wide variety of Jewish scholars, most notably Rashi and Rambam. Rashi is considered one of the leading commentator in Judaism. If you want to delve further into Rashi, you can purchase Rashi's entire commentary in five (5) volumes - It's called the Sapirstein edition of Rashi. Rashi is excellent to read by himself as well. For most Catholics, reading the Old Testament can be very difficult without the historical context, commentary, and background in Jewish traditions. This Chumash lays the whole text out in an easy to understand format, rich in commentary and historical context. I would encourage any reader to purchase this Chumash. In addition, you might consider purchasing Rubin's Commentary on the Prophets, which is the complementary volume to the Stone Edition of the Chumash. Rubin's volumes comment on the book of Joshua, Kings, etc. You also might want to purchase the Stone Edition of the Tanach as well which covers the entire Old Testament. All of the above are excellent resources for the lay Catholic that wants a better understanding of the Old Testament. Reading the Old Testament from these texts will give you a richer appreciation for the New Testament. The Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament, and these resources are invaluable to give you some insight into what many Catholics might consider to be a difficult text. Please note, however, that the commentary is strictly from Jewish sources, and no Christian or Catholic commentary is prescribed in these volumes. As a lay Catholic, you might consider purchasing an original Douay Rheims translation (pre-Challoner) of the Bible to compare and contrast the text and commentary. I wish I had purchased this product months ago also. Very easy reading the notes are very informative. They give understanding as to what was meant and being said. If any student of the Bible wants to truly understand what God was saying and is saying to us then they need to add this product to their library along with other Jewish books. The good news is truly of the Jew. Very much worth the money.

This is a must for any Jewish home. Almost every Orthodox Shul (excluding the Chasidishe Shuls in Brooklyn and Kiryas Yoel) in America has numerous copies for the Torah readings. This Chumash is also a required purchase for any potential convert (the vast majority of Orthodox Rabbis require this for conversion).

The Stone Edition Chumash which has the Torah, haftarah, and various commentary by Rashi and other great sages, is one of the best study guides for Torah. It has a very clear and accurate translation and also has the Hebrew texts along with the aramaic texts of the commentators. I recommend The Stone Edition Chumash for all serious students.

Aside from the direct translation from Hebrew, the added Rabbi commentary really helps the reader to fully understand the scriptures. Never have I seen commentary for almost every verse in the first five books of the bible! This is the foundation for discipleship that the "American church" lacks.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not Jewish. I'm something of an amateur religious studies kind of guy, and over the years I've read the sacred texts of almost every major world religion.
Of all of the copies of the "Old Testament" I've ever read, whether from Christian, Jewish, or secular sources, this is by far, -far and away- the best. I've recommended it to my Christian friends as an excellent source. It's an easy read on the basic level, but the notes and explanations allow a student to expand the reach of their education. It's not cheap, but it's well made, beautiful to hold, and will probably outlast you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-13 08:52:23 EST)

I have been so engrossed in reading this Torah, that I even take it to work. If you truly want to know the heart of G_d, get this book and read it! I have been very fortunate to have a Jewish friend who is giving me guidance as I read.
The book itself is beautiful, deep blue cover with gold lettering. The quality and workmanship is incredible. Enjoy and get to know Him. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 08:54:33 EST)

Accidently bought this one - it's light and has shabbat prayers in the back - but it's had on the eyes if you're a little bit older.
If you're eyes are getting weaker - go for the Stone edition. It could do with some more commentaries - like more modern people, but it's a good basic text to start you off with your weekly/daily Torah reading.. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 08:54:33 EST)

This Chumash is very helpful and resourceful. Having the Torah and Haftarah portions laid out are great not only for Shabbat, but personal study as well. If a person reads Hebrew you are able to compare the english translation to the origianl hebrew.
There is midrash commentary of well respected rabbis, however, the flip side to this, is that the commentary takes up more room than the actual scriptures themselves. I guess the saying, "2 Jews, 3 opinions," is correct. This is a good start to Torah study, and would be beneficial for students of all ages. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 08:54:33 EST)

For the serious and dedicated Talmid of the One True G-d, this Artscroll Chumash engrosses you and teaches you, all the while allowing you the freedom to read the Holy Scriptures in beautiful Hebrew on the right, or English on the left. Rambam and Rashi et. al. comments and Midrash, all to instruct you on what the Sages of Old taught, and many other wonderful commentators fill up the pages along with the Text to make your Torah experience even more meaningful. READ AND STUDY TORAH to prove yourself worthy before the King. Only His word sanctifies, so meditate on it daily. Never elevate a human word above His and always allow Him to teach you through Ruach HaKodesh. The quality of this Artscroll Edition is perfect. You will NOT be sorry. Messiah return quickly and in our day! Amen. Selah!
