The Maker's Diet

Miracle cure stories abound when it comes to natural healing. A super nutrient reverses cancer after chemotherapy has failed. A Chinese herb lowers high blood pressure in a patient with heart disease after being dismissed as quackery by doctors. Jordan S. Rubin?s account of returning from the medical abyss, however, includes an original twist. After several years of battling Crohn?s Disease, which included a small fortune spent on both conventional and alternative treatments, as well as trips abroad in search of help, Rubin weighed only 111 pounds and, at just age 21, thought his life was over. At the urging of his father, a naturopath, he contacted an obscure nutritionist in California promoting a diet based on the teachings of the Bible. Yes, we?re talking what Jesus ate: kefir, lamb, sprouted breads, eggs and meat from free-range chickens, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Rubin also started to pray and added a new powder supplement containing homeostatic soil organisms (HSOs) to his diet. Four months later he weighed 170 lbs and was on the road back to his former athletic and healthy self. Inspired by his experience, and now with advanced degrees in nutrition and naturopathic medicine, Rubin has crafted The Maker?s Diet. While the faithful will surely find the book of interest, Rubin?s command of the scientific issues underpinning his recommendations may also appeal to those more accustomed to studying food labels in search of what to eat than ancient religious texts. --Patrick Jennings

I pour through hundreds of nutritional books, looking for the little gem from each one. This one's main gem was the importance of good bacteria and how are bacteria-phobia has created disease. His message of taking soil organisms in supplement form is very valuable.
The only thing I disagree with is his insistence that we need meat. Cooked meat has especially been proven to be toxic. At least he emphasizes the need for grass-fed animals as opposed to factory farmed grain-fed ones.
The "how to get sick" chapter is one that all Americans need to read.

To say that this book saved my life would not be an overstatement. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease nearly three years ago at age 23. The doctors put me on Remicade (which I stopped breathing during an infusion), Entocort (steriod - so can't take that forever), and Pentasa (which made me throw up for a week and a half straight - couldn't hold down even liquid meal replacement shakes). This was over a time period of about 9 months. I had lost 15 pounds, been on liquid diets, and passed out twice in my apartment alone due to what I can only assume was malnutrition. None of the medicine helped. Finally, I had had enough. My mom found this book, and I decided (against my doctor's advice) to get off all medication and try this diet. About two weeks into the diet, I began to feel so much better. After completing the 40 day diet, I was completely restored. It has been almost two years now that I have not been on any medication, with NO symptoms of Crohn's whatsoever. I follow Phase 3 of the diet most of the time since I completed the original 40 days, but I do cheat once or twice a week. I also did the diet again for 40 days a year after I initially did it. I really do not know where I would be without having found this book and this diet. Probably in a hospital somewhere. The point is, no matter if you have Crohn's or any other disease (that they claim is "incurable"), or if you are just looking to lead a healthier life, this is the book for you. I'm not one to write reviews, but seriously, this book changed my life. If you're still not convinced, put it this way... it can't hurt to try it.

I was intrigued by the title thinking that it would offer Biblical food guidelines. But instead this author only wants you to buy bizarre products available only from his web site like special dirt to eat and soap to wash your hands with. Almost nothing Biblical about it. Actually, the Bible just says to eat lots of vegetables, avoid rich foods , shell fish and pork along with several other unclean animals. Good advice.
Forget Jordan; read Daniel and Leviticus

Wow- this diet is amazing. My atheiest friend starting following the makers diet after a particulary bad Crohns attack, and the improvement in her health is nothing short of spectacular. In fact the only times she relapses is when she goes off the diet. I'm not sure if she has found God yet, but she certainly has found a great way to handle her illness!

In January, my husband was told his cholesterol and blood pressure were too high. His cholesterol was 241. He was already exercising 5 days per week and we were on a "fairly" healthy diet. I ordered this book, we did what the book said, ten weeks later my husband's cholesterol was down 99 points!!! (He was also put on a very low dose of cholesterol meds at that time)Our doctor was so impressed, he called me himself to tell me the good news! If you will do this plan for the rest of your life, you will definitely improve your health, general well-being. Easy to do really, you just replace your junk food, eating out with buying organic, the expense is about the same!

Whether or not someone as credentials is irrelevent to me. I have scleroderma and knew more about the disease than MANY of the doctors I got sent to for help. I believe anyone with a disease or health issue will seek information from more sources, and know first-hand what works and what doesn't.
As for this book, anyone who reads it and thinks that eating food without overprocessing, added preservatives, artificial "enhancers", is wrong - they're just not thinking. How can chemicals added to create fake colors, flavors, give the appearance of a higher quality real food product be better for our bodies? The whole point of the book is to eat naturally, the way our bodies are made, whether you believe in God, or Mother Nature, you can't argue with the fact that we don't eat what our great-grandparents ate, and now who DOESN'T know someone with cancer? When I was young, cancer was a rarity, know it's the norm affecting almost every single family in some way or another - the major change is pollutants in the air, in the chemicals we put into our bodies, and the ones we put on our bodies. Argueing over details while ignoring the whole main point of the book is just ridiculous.

(Hide Review...)  Good read for IBD
Reviewer Permalink
I certainly don't ascribe to every single detail of this book, or Mr. Rubin's beliefs (although, there are many that I do) but this is a definite read if you have IBD, IBS, or any other GI problems. Since I have Crohn's, I can speak from experience. I am using his philosophy, in conjunction with the SCD and have had good results. I believe using diet as a means for therapy is great, but it won't deliver results overnight. You have to be willing to give it a chance.
To most of you who gave 1* or 2*'s, I offer you 4 remarks. You either a) have never suffered from a disease yourself, b) you aren't a Christian (or you just can't stand the thought that the Bible MAY have something to offer!), c) you didn't even bother to read the book, or d) you didn't follow the diet. Don't be so blatantly obvious! Oh, and reality check, don't take life so literally....think outside the box!
I have had IBD for almost 8 years. If you think that doesn't qualify as someone who has some knowledge of the GI system, you are wrong. It doesn't always take a MD or some "righteous" degree/credentials to write a book and share knowledge. In fact, all my MD's want to do is shove pills down my throat or open me up with a scalpel.
4 stars for this book. Just another way to avoid taking so many drugs. I do wish, however, that Mr. Rubin offered more for less. As in less money. You have to pay to be a member on his website (not gonna happen!) But, in the same breath, I've paid enormous amounts of money in pharmaceuticals and doctor's visits. I don't mind buying a book or two if it might offer even an ounce of help! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Mr. Rubin!

according to a reputable scientific site:
"Garden of Life, Inc., of West Palm Beach, Florida, and its founder and owner, Jordan S. Rubin, have been ordered to stop claiming that their dietary supplements are effective against a long list of ailments, ranging from colds to cancer. In 2004, the FDA ordered Garden of Life to stop making unsubstantiated claims for "Q-Zyme,""Primal Defense," "Virgin Coconut Oil," "Fungal Defense," "FYI (For Your Inflammation)," "RM-10," "Revivall Classic," or other products [1] In 2006, the FTC filed a complaint and consent agreement involving unsubstantiated claims that:
Primal Defense treats intractable immune disorders, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, lupus, colds, flu, and Crohn's disease, and reduces users' blood cholesterol levels;
RM-10 treats cancer, helps lower users' blood cholesterol levels, prevents and treats cardiovascular disease, and treats immune system disorders;
Living Multi reduces the risk factor for diabetes and prevents diabetes-related syndromes, reduces the risk of obesity, and reduces inflammation; and
FYI (For Your Inflammation) treats and prevents inflammation, including inflammation caused by arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sports injuries, asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, lupus, scleroderma, and other inflammatory conditions.

Under the settlement, Rubin and the company:
Must pay $225,000 in consumer redress. If it is found they misrepresented their financial status, they will be responsible for more than $47 million--the total gross sales of the four dietary supplements.
Are barred from making unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits, performance, efficacy, safety, or side effects of any food, drug, or dietary supplement, or any program that includes such a product.
Are prohibited from misrepresenting the results of any test or study when marketing such products and programs [2]"

(Hide Review...)  Hallelujah Diet & Lifestyle Rip Off

I will begin by saying that if you are currently eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) this book has information that will help you TRANSITION to a much healthier way of eating and living. However, if you are seriously ill and need healing quickly, you would be better off with George Malkmus' 'The Hallelujah Diet'. Brother George wrote his predecessor books to that one long before Rubin came out with this book, which appears to steal much of Malkmus' material. The big problem is that Rubin throws expensive organic, free range meat and dairy into the mix. If you read Rubin's first book about his healing, you will find that it didn't include fiberless, acid ash forming meat and mucus laden/forming dairy. These foods have been shown conclusively to contribute to disease by 'The China Study' and many other highly reliable sources. But, having them in this diet makes it much more palatable to people on SAD, hence it's current popularity. I also have an issue with Rubin's high priced supplements which he requires as part of his regimen. While Malkmus has a reasonably priced line of supplements available for the Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle, they are not 'required' for maximum benefit from his regimen.
Biblical Scripture does include this 'Noahic' diet, however I believe the Maker's Diet would be more correctly described by Genesis 1:29, which Rubin does quote, and which describes YHVH's Original Diet in the Garden, as well as the Hallelujah Diet. It just makes logical sense that this would be the ideal as it was given in the ideal state of man, created specifically for his body's needs. Noah appears to have been given permission to eat meat based upon need, as most vegetation had been destroyed in the flood. Just because we have permission does not indicate that it is YHVH's ideal for us.
I am a Certified Health Minister with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering and a work background as a Certified Environmental Trainer specializing in Health & Safety and Hazardous Materials who has studied several of Rubin's books carefully and find them seriously lacking in comparison to the much more effective and practical Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle materials.

Jordan Rubin is not a graduate of any medical school. He can't be sued because he doesn't have a license to loose. He is a snake oil salesman who has become very rich because his family of 'naturopaths' failed to diagnosis his Crohn's disease. Despite all his symptoms and his European Jewish ancestry, this bunch of geniuses didn't put it all together until he was nearly moribund. When I got through the first paragraph of symptoms, I was coming up with Crohns. But, heck, what do I know, I'm just a nurse. Mr. Rubin isn't content with giving dietary advice; he tells women--never sleep in a bra, and other advice, with no medically based support (okay, I couldn't resist the pun). Don't waste your money on this book, or anything else based on the bible. Pay attention to the Quack Alert. To make your adherence to the 'diet' easier, and himself richer, he has formed his own company carrying all the products you need. It should be called the shameless commerce division, but I think it's Garden of Life or something equally blissful and banal.

Rubin was written what I think is a helpful book on pursuing a healthy lifestyle with a Christian perspective. While some reviewers may disagree with some of his conclusions, overall the book is a helpful title.

I particularly enjoyed reading the following sections:

1. His own personal struggle with good health.
2. Various ways to get sick by practicing certain habits.
3. How thinking can affect your overall mental and physical health.
4. Appropriate ways to exercise without harming your body.
5. Particular types of healthy foods to eat and foods to avoid.

While I do not intend to follow all of his suggestions, I certainly plan to implement some strategies, namely, the types of foods to eat and avoid and types of appropriate exercise.

Be encouraged and challenged to get off your couch and do something positive about your mental and physical health. Recommended.

I read this book after having many random health symptoms that were similar to Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia/Exhaustion. My condition was bad to the point that I lost my job and was unemployed for about 6 months. I felt like I was in a fatigued, achy fog all of the time.

The information in the first part of this book is very helpful. It not only tells how the Standard American Diet (SAD) is a major culprit of disease and death in our society, but it offers science- and research-based insight into the practical steps toward wellness...God's way. It also takes you through Jordan's amazing story of disease and recovery.

I actually did the Maker's Diet 40 day program after reading this book. I took most of the supplements, and yes, they were expensive (like any other natural whole-food based supplements are). I also ate USDA organic produce, meat, grains and dairy from Whole Foods Market...again, expensive. But worth it!

Since then, I've continued to eat organic food, making sure I eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, as well as a balanced variety of meat, grains, and dairy. Since last year, I've recovered a WHOLE lot, with the help of this book, other resources, my diet and lifestyle changes, and taking a FEW key supplements daily.

The Bottom Line: This book doesn't have all the answers, but it offers a solid foundation of common sense diet principles. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn and apply the amazing benefits of a truly traditional diet.

This is the first of Rubin's books I read and it changed my life.
I have similar health problems [as he did,] and reading his personal history and suggested ( and successful!) dietary approach really has helped-- not only physically but in my attitude about my personal treatment without prescription medication.
The practics ARE hard to implement, however. The recommended food is an effort above and beyond "normal," not to mention noticably more expensive; but I think it's a small price to pay to look out for yourself and your long-term well-being. Besides, I'd be spending the difference on questionable drugs (from the doctor) anyway. I would much rather try the all natural approach first, no matter how difficult.

I would only ask that while reading these review you separate the people that have experienced practicing the diet from those who are merely on a soap box without experiencing what they are putting down.

This is an amazing book. Although I have yet to start the diet, I am amazed at what I am learning. As a skeptic, I have been researching this diet to make sure its not "blowing smoke". From all of the reviews of the book and other websites for and against the diet, or merely reviewing it, what I have learned is that people that have actually used these guidelines have seen a great improvement in their overall health.

As for the legalistic warfare going on with this book's spiritually "questionable" claims, I suggest picking up the bible for yourself. Interpret it the way God lays it on YOUR heart instead of listening to bickering of rights and wrongs. I have come to realize that at the very least this book is sincere, it is your responsibility to think for your self as to if this diet is right for you. I know that for me, I will report back in 42 days.

I agree with a reviewer that listed "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living" as a better alternative. It is straightforward, simple to understand and Biblical without peddling all the "Clenzology" and supplements on you. You learn the basics in this simple to read book.

Rubin seemed to go from two different directions. At some points he really does bring up what the Bible says and tell you of the wisdom but at other times he simply tells you some nutritional belief then either completely avoid mentioning the Bible or scrounge up something that will support his view. It's a mixed bag, though likely very helpful to anyone on the SAD (standard American diet) even if in places it falls short or is unnecessarily costly.

If you are able, your best bet is to stop reading what others say about biblical foods and do a word study of the biblical foods. Biblegateway.com has a topical index and you can type in "food". You'll see when meat was added and under what circumstances. (Vegetation was destroyed, no crops to rely on after the flood, etc. But perhaps the atmosphere and vegetable options were then limited too? Perhaps you could no longer get what was needed from vegetation. Perhaps you can. Good jumping point for nutritional study to follow the biblical study?)

You'll read about the "unclean" animals and realize they're not sinful in and of themselves to partake in. But why did God declare the unclean, clean? Were there better techniques now available to prevent the illnesses associated with these animals? Did God change the genetics? Or how about it being a spiritual lifting of the ban because it is the spiritual rebirth of the gentiles that God was after, not the law of clean or unclean foods? Another good look at the animals in question as well as an amazing biblical study on the book of Acts for further personal education. All things are lawful but just because we can eat something, does it edify?

Look at what they ate and then take a really good look at what you eat. Does the meat you buy resemble that of the "clean" animals of the Bible when the animals are stuffed with food they were never intended by our Creator to eat? (Take a good look at this if you have the stomach for it. The Omnivore's Dilemma isn't Christian but it is eye opening.) And you know what? The Bible talks rather highly of bread but is the stuff on the shelf anything like the bread they ate? Finally, remember that temperance is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:23) and we are to increase and use wisdom, which God readily gives to those who ask. (James 1:5)

(Hide Review...)  Maker's diet made my son breath easier... Asthma cure? Maybe.
Reviewer Permalink
We are active, not lazy people - so exercise is not our main problem. Diet, anti-biotic use, and the MMR shot I think were our biggest culprits. My son has had severe food allergies, and asthma since he was less than a year old. He needed intravenous antibiotics at birth, and later, was allergic to the MMR shot, but the doctor loaded him up with Benedryl and gave it to him anyways. Most kids who out grow their food allergies have done so by the time they are his current age - age 6. Our son was not getting better as time went on, he was getting worse, and adding more allergies to the list - over 15 different foods now, and almost all the environmental allergies that are available on the scratch test.

Last July, we started the Maker's Diet. We have not followed it 100%, and have still seen dramatic results. We are more or less following the diet that you will end up with at the end of the 40 days. Our diet was already so restricted from his allergies; I couldn't see how we could eliminate much more, so we followed the same guidelines that Jordan Rubin followed when he was first learning to eat from the bible. (We also read Patient Heal Thy Self. This info. is in both of his books.) If it worked for him... why not us? We only had July, August, and Sept., before the first colds and flu of the season hit, and our weather became very wet. He did much better with his asthma - he was only on the nebulizer ONCE this winter! Last winter he had to use it over seven times!! This is a very dramatic improvement. As far as his food allergies go... we haven't been able to eliminate any yet, but his reactions are not as severe as they had been, and his environmental allergy reactions are much better as well.

One other thing that I had pestered the doctors about for his whole life was the smell of his urine - I know it sounds strange, but you'd have to smell it to understand it. They always blew it off like there was nothing wrong - it was just caused from what he was eating. Well, I'm here to tell you that after about 6 months on the Maker's Diet, his urine changed, and now smells like a normal human being's. The only real major changes we made to his diet were eliminating sugar, and refined grains, and adding organics when ever possible. He's allergic to just about everything else that the diet says you should avoid. The only supplement he's taking is the Primal Defense powder. (The HSO's are not "dirt", in the book he said that it looked like dirt.) The urine smell change didn't happen overnight like the doctors say it does. Doctors had told me that some foods (like asparagus) affect your urine odor with in hours, not over several months. Something big is happening - I'd say healing.

Other wonderful changes we have noticed are: He was borderline ADHD with signs of autism - that has improved. He now has an attention span, and makes eye contact with you. He is more loving and affectionate, he has a great imagination now (his imagination was previously almost non-existent).

If you have any health problems, even minor ones, this diet can help you. God gives us the information, but it's up to us to use it. Even if you have to start out making small changes in order to stick with it, it's better than none. What do you have to loose?

This book has a good concept. If one has the ambition to actually do it. I bought this for my Sister who has Crohn's Disease and Ulcerated Colitis. She has taken parts of it and applied it to her life. I believe Jordan's story for her was the best thing she could read.

I have really enjoyed this book. I have wondered for a long time about the foods we eat. We actually have a motto in our house, "if God made we eat it, if man made it we don't." I won't say we don't eat any processed foods at all, but there are few. And my kids are healthy. I have an [...] and the only times they've been to the Dr. were for their well child checkups or injuries.

He has some really good information here. It is based on the Old Testament guidelines for the Jews. And some one else here pointed out how he (the author) left out the scripture where God made all meat clean. Well, if you actually study that scripture more, God was using that as an analagy for Peter to understand God has made the Gentiles clean. That being said, Jordan Rubin never makes any claims that this is the only way, or the right way of eating. He never says you must eat this way to be a child of God. He never says we are still bound by the old laws. But God did tell the Jews, his chosen people, to eat this way for a reason. Just because we aren't "under the law" anymore doesn't mean it's not still good for you. And if the Jews have been a nation of health and longevity, then it must be working.

The only thing that did bother me about his book is that he does promote his own products a little too much. And I still wonder about supplements. It really kinda goes against the grain of the rest of the book.

But I would recommend this to anyone. I wish more people would go back to this way of eating.

I enjoyed the information presented in the book as it follows right along with my "eating naturally" lifestyle. I didn't enjoy his recommendation to ingest HSO's or dirt... After reading the book, I did some research on the author and his credentials are highly questionable and some even appeared to made up completely.

I quit reading this book about 2/3 of the way through it. I found many of his points questionable and for the majority of people and families, I think eating this way would be impractical and expensive.
The author relies heavily on the extended life spans of Biblical characters but never makes the distinction that the people he refers to were living in the post-Garden of Eden age. These people still had the genetics and some of the natural conditions that existed when the world and human beings were created. And they were likely created to live for a long time. If this diet were so healthy, I wonder why Jesus was mobbed by people (including Jews) asking for healing of various health problems.
Mr. Rubin also excludes the fact that when Peter shied away from eating "unclean" foods, God told him not to call unclean that which He had made clean. Peter understood he was being given permission to eat what had once been forbidden.
The author also seems to warn against many of the vaccines and inoculations that are recommended today, ignoring the hundreds and thousands of lives that are saved and disabling conditions avoided by these practices. While a few people may react negatively to a vaccine, the benefits far outweigh the risks.
What really turned me off was the author's glowing remarks about his cleansing routine. Hoping to learn more about it, I turned to the page listed in the back and found only ordering instructions for his book on this cleansing routine--no other information about what it might entail. That's when I saw all the mail order information for the foods he recommends. Anyone who lives outside a large urban center would be forced to use these mail order companies to buy their food. And how expensive would that be to feed a family, much less an individual?
Maybe if I were in extreme health circumstances as Mr. Rubin was, I would try this diet. But not until then.

This book is an absolute revelation and eye opener. Anyone with health issues or anyone desiring to have optimum, must read this book. It uncovers ancient biblical principals that if you follow will gaurantee divine health all the days of your life. The first chapter of this book brings me to tears. Jordan's miraculous story shows ust that there is a Real God, and if anyone wants to experience the power of healing, it's available to all. I feel bad for the many ignorant people that put all their eggs into the diagnoses of a Dr. without first checking into healthy alternative options. Too many people are dying due to lack of knowledge. Well no longer are we blind to misconceptions of natural health remedies, that's been around from the beginning of time. This book will awaken inside of you a new revelation of what it takes to walk in divine health and live long. Don't let your life be robbed from you. God has given you all things to enjoy, therefore I encourage anyone who wishes to have superior health to invest in this book as well as try Jordan Rubin's health products on www.gardenoflife.com. You will truly be blessed! Here's to our health, we have to take it back, or it will take us!

The only thing you will lose if you follow this diet is that green paper you keep in your purse/wallet. All you're doing is making Jordan Rubin rich. Besides, the notion that certain foods are "unclean" is, like...SOOO Old Testament (remember: the New FULFILLS the Old---ALL foods are considered CLEAN by this New Covenant). Besides, some of the foods he suggests in this diet are outright NASTY (example: "biogurt"---YUUUUUUCK).

Stay away from the Maker's Diet. Eat what you need in the right amounts, and eat what you want in moderation.

If the author is to be believed, the Maker's Diet has been
known for centuries due to the extensive Biblical citations.
In addition, the primitive diet is even older. The book
cites Gabon, Africa as a location devoid of cancer due to the
simple dieting of the inhabitants. The primitive diet is known
to produce strong teeth and bodies. The diet consists of
protein, fruits and veggies in the natural/organic state.

Modern society brings with it fluorination, tatooing, dental
amalgums, sunlight, tanning and chlorination- all potentially
harmful to humans. The author cites the advent of bone
infections due to the agrarian-based diets. Enzymes can aid
in digestion. In addition, quality sleep before midnight
can lead to optimal health outcomes. Adding HSO to the diet
promotes important anti-oxidant activity.

This book could be very helpful in crafting an optimal
nutrition strategy based on the Bible and some known
alternative medicinal science.

This book was given to me as a wonderful gift from a beautiul girl I just met.....So, it gets FIVE stars~!!! Ok, I read it because of her. and guess what~!? The book content was very very eye opening for me, and taught me so much COMMON SENSE. I found American's diet to be super unhealthy, and is a FAT NATION. No wonder why? Compare to any other Nation, our food intake volume and quality of food SUCKS~! If I lived in China, or Japan....I would not be FAT or SICK as much. OK, so......what can we do about it? READ THIS BOOK, learn something, then make it to fit your life. I do not think Diet should be hard, or painful. Just eat healthy, drink healthy.....and do not be lazy.

"The Maker's Diet" by Jordan S.Rubin is a book for those who have health challenges and would like to follow the biblical injunctions to regain their health, like the author did. Jordan recovered from a very severe form of Crohn's disease, which is considered incurable by the main stream doctors. He recovered by his faith in his Maker (the God) and by following the dietary guidelines given in The Bible. After recovery, Jordan felt inspired to continue to help other sufferers by sharing with them his knowledge. He is a doctor of naturopathy and is thus well qualified to write on the subject. But many of his recommendations appear to be commercially motivated. Many chapters of the book read like some marketing testimonials!

While the information given by Jordan is indeed valuable, the book has one limitation in that the food items suggested cannot be followed by lacto-fructo-vegetarians, who, by choice, by faith or by their religious upbringing have decided not to eat eggs, fish and meat. And Jordan seems to believe that God has chosen the Israelites specially to share His wisdom about food and has not shared His wisdom with people of other faiths in other lands. The Hindus too believe that He spoke to them and their food habits are quite different.

Much of the information contained in this book is common to what is given in Jordan's other book, "Restoring Your Digestive Health" coauthored by Jordan and Joseph Brasco. There is of course, some difference in the emphasis, in that the present book focuses more on following the Maker's Dietary instructions.

The last few chapters of the book are devoted to specific suggestions about the 40 day Diet and the Appendices give sources for getting the various foods recommended.

If you are comforatble with the Bible and would like to adhere to the dietary guidelines of that book, you may derive good value from the present book. You may also find that the diet recommended by the book is beyond your affordability.

(Hide Review...)  Good Diet . . . BUT . . .

Jordan Rubin's life was saved by changing his eating habits. He gave up the poor diet of a typical American in exchange for a diet based on foods described in the Bible. In the process he learned enough about health and nutrition to become an expert.

Is his diet good? I am not an expert like Rubin, but from all I've read, he seems to have a good grasp on healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. His book is easy to read, and if his diet is followed I have no doubt the person on the diet will be more healthy. Most diets that increase persons' self discipline are beneficial. The book has an interesting, easy to read style. Rubin's practice of changing tone from chapter to chapter will keep the reader engaged.

Is this the diet for you? I doubt it. This diet takes a lot of work, much more than the average American will be willing to put into practice. The idea sounds good, but most people will not put out the energy it takes to make it work.

My suggestion? Unless you are a disciplined person, choose a simpler approach.

This book is a must for everyone. Religious or not. If you believe in God, all the better. But if not it is still invaluable information! Just cutting out some of the foods mentioned, my husband and I have seen a huge difference in our digestinal system. Clearly our creator knew what he was talking about when he gave us a dietary law. This book also strengthened my faith. Some of the things mentioned in the law are amazing. Science has now proven so many of these things to be essential to our health. How did these people know that, they didn't. God did. In Ezekial 4:9 God gives a recipe for bread. Science has now proven that those ingredients combined create a perfect food. Clearly God knows what He is talking about when He gave us a dietary law. I beleive the Dietary Law to be a health law. For maximum health follow His law given to Moses regarding food. This law has nothing to do with righteousness and only to do with Health. Do you think God told you to wash your hands before you eat because it made you a righteous person, no! Because He knew you'd get sick if you didn't.

I have read this book and I have read the bible! I find nothing contradictory whatsoever. This book points toward the intended dietary guidlines for better health. Biblically speaking God knows his creation better than the creation knows itself. I believe the dietary law to be nothing more than a guidline for health. You wouldn't put water in your gas tank so why do we put non-kosher food in our bodies? If you read the passages given about The Law they simply say that The Law does not lead to righteousness. The Jews got all mixed up trying to be outwardly righteous they missed the point. Jesus never said to eat whatever you want in Mark 7, that was Marks additional comments in newer versions. Possibly even added by people later as the bible was written over and over again. Jesus merely states that what comes out of you (evil thoughts, words, actions) makes you defiled not what goes in, he never says eat what you want. And in Acts 10 when you read the whole story in context you realize that a Gentile man was coming to invite Peter to his home. Then considered an 'unclean' thing to do by Jews. At that time Peter has a vision from God about excepting unclean things. Had he not had this vision he would not have gone to the Gentile home. But he never ate the foods described.

Bottom line. The New Testament is merely trying to make a statement that the whole law (food included) had nothing to do with faith and righteousness. It had gotten turned into a huge egotistical war. Abraham had no 'law' and yet he was deamed righteous by his faith. That was the point the new testament was making. That the law was just a guideline not a standard for getting to heaven. Do you really think God messed up? That he needed the saints going around correcting his error? I am sure Jesus would have been killed much sooner than he was had been going around telling everyone to have their pork and lobster! Why would he send demons into a herd of pigs if he was telling everyone those were good for food? The only fact remains that food is food, it only effects our health not our spiritual wellbeing! If you want to be healthy read this book! If you are ailing from any disease read this book!

The Maker's Diet book is not just "another diet book". First, this book is a guide to a change in overall eating habits and wellness for life. There IS a 40 day plan to follow to initially detoxify your system, and get on the right road to being healthier, however, this plan extends well past the 40 days.
If you want a quick fix, extremt weight loss, simple book, this is not the book for you. If you want to look better, feel better, enhance your life from more than just a physical standpoint, and achieve your best possible total wellness- then buy this book! I have read the book, cooked the recipes, and done the 40 day plan. I have changed my eating habits, and my overall health in a relatively short time. Has it been easy? No. But is anything worth doing, really worth doing, easy? No. If you are tired of looking in the mirror and knowing you are not healthy, whether overweight, sickly, poor skin, etc- then try this plan- try it for 40 days. You can do anything for 40 days right? Yeah, you definately can. You will be glad you did. Your body will be glad you did, and anyone who knows you will see a difference. If you need to lose pounds- you will. If you need better health- you will achieve it. If you just want to feel better- that will happen.
Remember- garbage in/garbage out. This book will guide you to replace garbage with good...good in/GREAT out.

Here's to your health! =)

Jordan had advanced Crohn's Disease and was literally starving to death until he went to our designer Himself and looked in the Bible for God's widom regarding what our bodies can and cannot handle. He gained weight and got healthy using this diet; I was over-weight, but lost weight and got healthy using this diet.

It comes complete with pages of "real food" recipes like "Easy Smothered Salmon", "Chicken with Oregano and Mushrooms", and "Family Roast Beef" for starters. There are recipes in this book for every meal of the day including desert! It "breaks you in" gently to eating right and still eating foods you like. For many more recipes, meal plans, and food choices, I also recommend buying his companion book "The Maker's Diet: Shopper's Guide".

I really enjoyed this book, it's a great diet primer.
I really like Jordan's examples and his experiences will help those in need and in trouble with their health, specifically their diet. Great Diet Therapy book for those whose needs are very special. This book is a highly interesting book for people who have problems with Iritable Bowel Syndrome, GI and Crohn's Disease, and have tried everything else to get better. I am not an expert in these matters but I liked the way he explained "How" we get sick and what specifically to do.
He is a great example of determination and a good model for healing especially those who have Gastro Intestinal problems.
