(Hide Review...)  one of the best books to buy about j2ee

This book is very satisfactory if you want to increase your knowledege about java and j2ee. It has lots of short but very satisfactory and understandable answers to key java and j2ee questions. It is one of the best reference books I have ever examined about java.

(Hide Review...)  Lots of info, but weak presentation
Reviewer Permalink
Overall, I give this book a medium rating. There is a lot of information about J2EE and related technologies, which is good to help give you a quick understanding of technologies if you don't have any experience with them. The presentation is very weak and this book could be much better with a proper job of editing.

Pros: lots of good information, presented in a concise manner, lots of brief code examples
Cons: poorly written, many points are repeated multiple times, the grammar is sometimes difficult to understand

I'm finding this a good book preparing for interviews after over a year out traveling, a slightly scary prospect. It's great to find so much subject matter (and most of it very relevant) in one place, but I'm only giving it 3 stars due to some really poor editing. Not something I normally worry about unduly, but I have a breaking point. Some of the examples are lifted more or less straight off other websites...

Great, but intense brush up on Java/J2EE for those interviewing with Google, Microsoft, Amazon or any of the other "rigorous interview" tech companies.

(Hide Review...)  Seriously, has anybody edited this book?
Reviewer Permalink
There are many glaring grammatical and sentence construction errors. Anybody would expect quality work for a book that is priced $$. Sure one can swallow some mistakes of this kind given the fact its a technical book, but not when it interferes with your reading and wastes your time. 3 stars are for the subject matter covered.

(Hide Review...)  Not for me

I was looking for a book on J2EE that would help me get through a job interview. I know programming, but I have no J2EE experience. I was looking for a quick overview that would teach me some vocabulary and concepts ... enough to not sound like a total dope on the interview.

This book COMPLETELY failed to meet my expectations. It was poorly written and assumed you already knew everything about J2EE. J2EE terms were used and never defined or explained.

All J2EE technologies that came until 2007 in one book. It helped me gain real good understanding on issues related to performance. Author has very good knowledge on issues related to J2EE.
Cons are the price. Maybe book is a little bit overpriced. Maybe should reduce by 5$ to get more buyers. But there is good content.

(Hide Review...)  An excellent book not just for interviews
Reviewer Permalink
An excellent book. Not only for the J2EE interviews but a very good book for refreshing Java/J2EE concepts. Many times, it happens that, we would have worked on a particular technology very well a while ago, but we may not be able to answer even fundamental questions if we do not refresh our knowledge before interview. That is where this book will be very useful.

(Hide Review...)  Good content, terribly written

This book covers most of the topics one might need for a J2EE interview, and in that sense it is a good book. Quite adequate for reviewing before interviews just as I'm doing.
However, even if it is a technical book, it should be written using adequate English grammar and using good writing techniques. Just as J2EE has its tricks, so does English. A more professional layout would also be useful. The book needs an editor. Urgently.

(Hide Review...)  A very good book for beginers

When I initially saw the price for this book I was a lil hesitant to buy. But then I thot lets see may be this will help in making good impression in my interview.

I am really happy with the content of this book. All the questions which you think will be asked in the interview are covered in this book. Answers are precise and make the point clear.

If you are a beginner and looking for a job this book is for you. Atleast helped me a lot.

I would definitely like to suggest the author that if could publish some more books like this on other technologies like PHP, Perl...would be an excellent idea.

(Hide Review...)  excellent , got me a good job at first chance
Reviewer Permalink
This is really a good book and i would recommend it for all the candidates who is trying to seek a new job in java/j2ee field .covers almost everything that an interviewer can ask , and if any candidate goes through every line of the book , then i think its impossible for anyone to do an interview badly even if you have not worked in some frameworks as this book is decorated with extremely good examples for interview purpose and covers all the latest j2ee topics and framework .
But this book is not dictionary for java learning though , there is 100% chance that a person can go through the interview well if the candidate as gone through everyword in this book .Explains all the core concept in a simple question and answer form and also underlines the important ones.I myself got a good job and not only did i do the inteview well , i was also confident that i would do a good interview that must have showed in my attitude aswell during the interview.
Thanks to Arulkumaran for writing this book.

(Hide Review...)  a strenuous test of your java knowledge
Reviewer Permalink
It's a long exam, by some standards. The questions range very widely, and offer a strenuous test of your java knowledge. The relatively easy section comes first. Where the questions are about standard java. The java that is usually denoted J2SE. Many java programmers should breeze thru it. Anyone with fluency in writing vanilla java won't have any problems. Perhaps in recognition of this, the author has kept this section relatively brief.

The meat of the exam is about Enterprise level java. J2EE. Much of this relates to running an enterprise program on a server. What type of server? Some questions concern when you have a web server. So brush up on Java Server Pages, Servlets and Beans. Speaking of beans, you also need to cover EJBs.

Another type of server is when you have to hook up to a SQL database. And there are questions about how to do this. Plus, interacting between a java program and XML is an important practical topic. Also covered. Along with running unit tests, via JUnit, and implementing a logger.

More is covered. Good revision before a job interview.
