My daughter and I ate at Carmines on a trip to NYC in August, 2008. The food was exquisite and plentiful. When I heard an interview with the owner on the "Today Show" (I think), I knew I just had to buy the book for myself and my 25 year old daughter! I highly recommend both the restaurant and the recipes in this cookbook!

Carmine's Family Style Restaurant(s) in New York City is one of my favorite places to eat when I'm in New York. The food is wonderful and the family style servings can serve a large table or a few ravenous diners. The cookbook shares so many of their delicious recipes and the instructions are presented so easily that even a novice cook could navigate through the pages and come up with a dinner the whole family can enjoy. I highly recommend this book to anyone but especially those who love really authentic Italian food.

If you have ever eaten at Carmines and dream about their food you have got to have this book. I have already tried several recipes and they come out exactly like they do at Carmines. Of course there is no substitution for the enjoyment you get of actually dining at Carmines but this is as close as you will get to being there.

Most of the restaurant recipe books do not work for the home cook. Though I have not tried all the offerings this book has, all that I have tried have come out wonderfully. It's one of the best books of its kind.

I love Carmine's restaurants and was really excited to see that they finally released a cookbook with all their recipes. I've tried 8 recipes so far and they've all been amazing, though I did find them to be quite labor intensive and time consuming. It's totally worth the time and effort, but many of the recipes are more suited for a weekend meal. I highly recommend the Meatballs, and Carmine's Marinara Sauce is an excellent basic sauce. Once you get beyond chopping all that garlic, the Marinara Sauce is super easy to make and freezes well.

I do think they could have done a better job testing and converting the recipes for home cooking. I found that the Chocolate Torta needed to bake for approx. 1.5 hours, rather than 1 hour. The Bolognese Sauce calls for 1 tablespoon of salt, but this is an insane amount of salt (I used 1 teaspoon and it was still too salty). The crepes for the Manicotti did not call for enough milk; if you follow the recipe they come out way too thick and do not make 8-9 crepes (more like half that amount). I also found that the Bread Pudding, while delicious, didn't come out very chocolately, and I will add a lot more chocolate next time. Neither the Chocolate Torta or Bread Pudding recipes note whether or not you need to grease the pan. Just thought I'd note these things in case they're helpful to another cook. Enjoy!
