Great book! Bat Ye'or is right on target, and this should be a must on the reading list of every Senator in the USA. European political cats should also read it; but personally I think it is too late for them. They have been so in love with antisemitism and its new cousin anti-israelism; they have been so happy to embrace the Arabs and their oil; they have been so enchanted with the old game of hating the Jews that they completely lost the focus on the real thing and meanwhile, their friends were busy stealing Europe under their eyes. But they did not want to see, and therefore they did not see it coming....And if you want to know what I am talking about, well, you will have to read the book......

After reading negitive reviews of this book I decided to read it. And I am glad I did. Among other things, the book explains very thoroughly how anti-Semitic bigotry has been cultivated in Europe, mainly in France, during the last 30 plus years. The book's author did excellent job researching roots of European antipathy toward the U.S. and utmost hatred toward Israel. She shows how ridiculous and at the same time how wide-spread is joint Arab-European modern mythology about Islam's great contribution to world's science, art, and the cause of human rights, while in fact Islam remains the most backward, intolerant, and barbaric ideology ever created on this planet.
The book includes a very impressive list of appedices (real documents), notes, and bibliography. I think it should be a required reading for anyone interested in the subject. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-20 04:00:30 EST)

Bat Ye'or writes intelligently about recent developments and changes in the world. Sixty years after the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust, it seems that we are once again facing a perilous situation in Europe. Through the ages, more people have been killed in the name of religion than for any other reason. Will we face that reality once again in the twenty-first century? Her book is definitely worth reading.

This is an important book that eveyone with an interest in Islam and politics must read. This book explains in detail how and why Europe is undergoing a process of Islamization. Not just allegations, the author fills the book to overflowing with references, citations, and ample evidence to prove her point. This is required reading.

I have never read such an exagerated propaganda in all my life's reading and academic studies. Bat Ye'or needs to repent and to apologize to the world especially to Jews, Christians and Muslims. Ye'or must have undergone some sort of trauma as a child with a bit of brainwashing by the zionist movement. I do not recommend anyone to invest in this unscholarly crap. The book trashes everyone except the zionist movements and its supporters. I wish I could rate this book a zero rather than 1 star. Ye'or and her followers need psychological and mental help. If you do not believe me read the book with a critical eye and you will question her credibility and dismiss her as a fanatical zionist for blood.

The book is based on false premises and a lack of broader understanding. There wouldn't be millions of Muslims in Europe if the White Europeans didn't have such a low birthrate. The Muslims arrive there for work and those countries need their labor. Are Arabs to blame because Euros refuse to have children? I don't think so.

Europeans appear to view themselves as intellectually superior than Americans. However, didn't all the "smart" Europeans get killed in the Shoah, immigrate to Israel and immigrate to the U.S.? Who is left? The people that are left are too stupid to realize another culture is invading. The people that are left are too stupid to realize that the culture, which is invading, thinks of the native Eurpeans as dogs.
Europeans are like the California Condor. The Condor was going to go extinct as part of natural selection. The Condor species was too stupid to live and adapt in the current times. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-05 22:27:53 EST)

Bat Ye'or has an agenda, so she attracts a lot of flak from academia (some of which are my friends). In particular, she is blamed for being one-sided and selective. Nevertheless, her book should be taken for what it is: a documentation of Arab attempts to influence European politics -- international and domestic -- in favor of Arab interests. You cannot argue with documents. You do, however, need to be wary of their context. But I think that Bat Ye'or does a rather good job in not taking things out of context. Her interpretations are a different thing. In particular, her identification of Judophobia as the motivation of many events is a bit overstretched. The narativ and interpretations she offers are important in their own merit. She definitely is an interesting voice well worth your time.

One measure of success for a book such as this is how effectively it stimulates discussion. Unfortunately, opinion seems to have polarised around those who think every statement in this book is correct, and those who do not.
I'll leave it to others to consider whether, for them, that constitutes meaningful debate. From my perspective, this book should be read, in conjunction with other sources of information, for two reasons. First, to try to obtain a deeper appreciation of some of the factors influencing Europe's relationship with the geopolitical entities known collectively as the Middle East and, secondly, to try to understand the author's view of Islam. Bat Ye'Or puts forward some persuasive, at least superficially, arguments in favour of her interpretations. Whether she is correct or not, we all should be concerned. But don't let the debate begin and end with this book: read more broadly and discuss more widely. This book is a starting point, not a conclusion. A thought provoking read. Mark Steyn says it best: "Much of what we loosely call the Western world will not survive this century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most Western European countries." - January 2006 THE NEW CRITERION
So, this is how 1,500 years of western civilization comes to an end? And what of the millions of decent, upstanding, cultured peoples of Europe who gave their lives for the survival of their nations; the millions who were bombed and burned to death, torn to shreds by shrapnel; the soldiers at Flanders, the Somme, Verdun who choked to death on poison gas; the women, elderly, and children who were incinerated in Hamburg and Dresden; and the untold millions of broken European bodies that froze and starved to death in Russia, Poland, Germany.... And these now dead European souls have been replaced by the dirty, bearded swarms of Islamist vermin that now drift around the cities of Europe. This is how it is to end? The Europeans today are not worthy of the greatness and courage of their ancestors, who would NEVER have allowed this calumnity to happen. This treason, this perversion of nature and biology, came about because the so-called postmodern Eurocrats turned their backs on their history and culture. So, the high art of the Renaissance and the sublime philisophy of the Enlightenment will one day be replaced by the cultural-wasteland of Arabia and the Dark Ages-era thinking of the Koran? The untold millions of culture-bearing souls died to eventually have their inheritance handed over to a Martian-like foreign species? And the genius of a Bach, a Beethoven, a Shakespeare, a Rousseau, a Rembrandt, etc.... will be replaced by the illiterate, child-raping fraud Mohammed? And the courageous leadership of a Churchill, a Bismarck, a Napoleon, a Cromwell, etc..... will be supplanted by the cave-dwelling coward Osama? This is all the result of the perverted sickness that now afflicts the so-called postmodern world: liberal multi-culturalism, the murderer of our civilization. The first chapter is weak, because the author gives opinions not facts. The remainder of the book is very factual, well researched, well presented.
Europe has been very servile to the Arab world since the oil boycot of 1973. Servile meaning: paying lots of $ for oil, taking an anti-American and anti-Israeli stand, and allowing massive moslim immigration into Europe. The author shows all of this in great and chilling detail. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-31 14:19:55 EST)

In a few decades muslims will turn Western Europe into an islamic continent. This book goes into detail explaining why this is happening and how. The peoples of Europe deserve what ever happens to them for allowing millions of a foreign and unassimilatable people move into their home land. This book doesn't leave much room for optimism either. I recommend this book if you have an interest in the future of Europe or the Western World.

One reviewer pegged it "The Pussification of Europe" and I have to agree with him. Recently I have been reading many books like this to try and understand whats the deal with Europe? I think they deserve what is happening to them for being so passive and letting the Muslims take over at the same time giving a cold welcome to the US after all the years of aiding them.
Due to their close ties with the Arab world and allowing their people to come to Europe and have 7-10 children per couple compared to 1-2 children for a average European couple they will soon be out numbered and kicked out of their own country. I know the wars in the Middle East might not be popular now but I think in the long run it will be for the best to protect our future. Europe is lost at least the US has a chance for survival. I just don't want to see me or anyone present or future in this country be drafted for a war again to save those useless people. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-19 13:47:36 EST)

Bat Ye'Or has performed an invaluable service, by carefully documenting the history of the Euro-Arab Dialogue, the EU's agreement to accept Islamic colonization in return for security, oil, and the hope for power to rival America. The US stands, perhaps with only Israel at our side, as "The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave."

Living in Germany and knowing many European countries well, I must say it is a fact that, during the next 30 years, we will see a muslim majority in Europe, no doubt at all. Today, the majority of all children born in the entire Netherlands as well as in most cities of Germany, France, England and so on are muslim.
You do the maths. The majority of these is neither willing nor able to adopt to what we would consider a European, or western, way of life. So much for the facts. Still, I do not agree with the author when it comes to the reasons for the developments that got Europe that far. European governments apart from the French one have never been supporting Arab plans for expansion, they simply let it happen. They let it happen because whenever you dare to speak out on immigration issues as a European, you're considered a fascist. Probably that's something Americans cannot understand, but Europe after WWII has never recovered anything called pride, values, protection of its own people first.... Yes, it's a shame we let it happen. Before you blame us the next time for not acting before it was too late, will you please take a look at California? Anyway, I hope you read the signs and learn from our coming downfall before it may be too late for you folks as well! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-11 10:34:34 EST)

This may have been the most eye opening book, about a topic I thought I knew, that I have ever read.
Ms. Ye'Or puts the facts, layer upon layer, over the world view that has turned the EU into a tool of the Islamists and their friends. She shows how a sinister desire to challenge the rise of US influence in Europe, by DeGaulle and others who showed no repect fot what America had done for them during WWII, became a virolent form of anti-semitism when mixed with Arabist dreams. Read this and you will have the right answers the next time someone tells you that the US needs to be like Europe it our dealings with the Middle East. Bat Yo'er provides an excellent historical overview of the systematic way in which Europe's elite (political, media, university, etc.) has conspired with the Arab world, especially since the Arab oil embargo of 1973. The author points out that Europeans sought to align themselves with the Muslim world for two major reasons - (1) To form a counterbalance to USA influence, and (2) To assure the flow of oil and the availability of Muslim markets for European goods.
In order to initiate this process, the Euro-Arab Dialogue (EAD) was formalized. This agreement was essentially an alliance that would quickly prove to be anti-Israeli, anti-Semitic, anti-American, and anti-Christian. It appears that when agreement was initiated, Europeans, especially the French, believed they would regain a degree of control over their former colonies. In fact, it appears those colonies, and the Islamic faith that propels them toward "uniting" with Europe, have gained control over Europe. The Islamic colonization of Europe brought with it darkness and foreboding, as Islam robs Europe of its tolerant and pluralistic culture. For years I wondered why my European relatives spoke more favorably of Islam than Christianity, and supported the "victim" Palestinians over the "oppressive" Israelis. Far from being an accidental consequence of open dabate, their views actually resulted from the conscious decisions made by European elites to allow massive immigration and cultural change. Because of those elite decisions, the citizens of Europe now face a frightening future, where demographic change favors an Islamic conquest of Europe. Bat Yo'er thoroughly documents the process whereby Europeans have surrendered, or submitted, to the Muslim world. Is it coincidental that Islam means "submission"? Europeans believe, for the most part, that any potential enemy or oppressor can be overcome with dialogue. But through the EAD, they are discovering instead that dialogue is not leading to multiculturalism, but to submission on their part. This submission to the more aggressive culture has already resulted in dhimmitude, where European "infidels" are rendered subservient to the dominant, more aggressive, Muslims. This book is a wake-up call to all Westerners. Hopefully, for Europe and also for the United States, it is not too late. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-11 10:34:34 EST)

Eurabia is indeed an expose. It is an expose that shows the perfidy of the French governments and some European governments and just how they allowed themselves by their greed and their arrogance to be conned by slippery Arabs into signing everything over to them but the deed to their homes. They expected the Arabs to act as partners in their economic and political war against America. They did not realize the Arabs consider all non-Muslin countries as the same country. Of course, now they are reaping the whirlwind.

Wow. I came into EuroAbia not knowing what to expect, and I have to admit it's pretty darn scary.
Some of it went over my head. Another book I've been reading is the autobiography of Osama Bin Laden's mistress, KOLA BOOF. It's an Advance Copy and I can't put it down. It's so fascinating and detailed and I never in a million years expected to learn so much about terrorism or Bin Laden. Everybody who wants an inside view of Bin Laden's world and the world of his terrorist colleagues should read Kola Boof's "Diary of a Lost Girl". (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 15:26:45 EST)

"Bat-Ye'or" wants to convince us that Islam has a stranglehold on Europe, that European politicians have been turned into submissive "dhimmis", and that all their policies on the Israeli-Arab dispute are dictated by the Arabs. She wants us to believe that Europe is motivated only by fear of losing their source of oil, fear of terrorism, and a desire to form a European-Arab axis to stand up to America.
Bat-Ye'or conveniently ignores whatever goes against her thesis, or else gives a very contrived interpretation of things. She is totally one-sided in her approach to the Arab-Israeli problem, never admitting that Israel is at all to blame. She believes that the Jews were simply exerting their rights when they took over most of the Holy Land (after campaigning hard to have the UN divide it into two states--a fact Bat-Ye'or ignores). I am somewhat sympathetic to some of Bat-Ye'or's opinions, but I disagree with those who praise her analysis and her writing. In general I find the book quite poorly written. A discerning eye will notice that she is presenting biased points of view as though she is presenting facts. This really diminishes her credibility, so that I don't trust her when she's talking about things I don't know much about. There are also quite a few sentences that are not well written. Sometimes she says really ridiculous things and gets herself tied up into knots. She gives me the impression of a not-very-good high school student who is trying to write a paper in support of a certain position, and who tries to think of every possible thing that could be interpreted as supporting her position! So generally, I do not find her very convincing when she says that Europe has simply buckled and surrendered to the Islamic jihad. There is certainly some truth to the idea that Europe has been influenced by the desire to please the Arabs, but that is much too simple an explanation of history. Bat-Ye'or is obviously not the right person to analyze the question of to what extent Europe is bowing to pressure and to what extent it is acting on good will and conviction. She paints everything the Europeans do as cowardice. I think this book is written for those who already think like her, and anybody else would find it practically useless. The amount I found interesting could have been written in a few pages. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 15:26:45 EST)

In this awe-inspiring work, Bat Ye'or chronicles the origins and course of the insidious cultural and economic Jihad of the past 30+ years against the West. She identifies the historical and spiritual dimensions of the current struggle against our civilization by detailing how the enemy has been weakening our culture in the aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Oil wealth has been harnessed to wage psychological and diplomatic warfare in order to subvert the Judeo-Christian and Enlightenment roots of Europe and turn it into a limp-wristed post-modernist culture as a prelude to subduing it completely. The most disturbing revelations concern the European intellectual and political elites that have colluded in this process of undermining our heritage. The clearest signs of the extent to which they have succeeded are the Anti-American, Anti-Zionist and Pro-Palestinian attitudes of much of Europe nowadays, demonstrating the effects of the intelligentsia on ordinary people via the media. By playing on European resentment of American dominance, the enemy is succeeding in breaking up the Western Alliance. There is also the gruesome convergence of a resurgent fascist Anti-Semitism with the Islamist resentment of the existence of Israel. One of its manifestations is Palestinianism, where the Western cultural pathology of guilt is being exploited to turn the West against Israel. Other forces are at work too, like French envy of Anglo-Saxon pre-eminence and the material benefits of close economic co-operation with the oil-rich countries of the Middle East and North Africa. After the Yom Kippur War and the subsequent raising of oil prices, France threw itself into the arms of the oil-producers and influenced the European bureaucracy to follow suit, by means of the EAD (Euro Arab Dialogue) and the Parliamentary Association for Euro-Arab Co-operation (PAEAC). Shamelessly abusing the western value of tolerance and leftist fads like relativist multiculturalism, the enemy has been gaining ground whilst giving nothing in return. Thus Israel has been turned into an international scapegoat while atrocities and genocide in places like Sudan, Chechnya and Rwanda plus human rights abuses in Islamic countries have been ignored. The various strands of this European policy of dhimmitude encompass appeasement, bribery, and the encouragement of Anti-Americanism and Anti-Semitism in the guise of Anti-Zionism. Thus decades of Leftist undermining of Western values and multiculturalist indoctrination in academia are bearing their poisonous fruit. It is of the utmost importance for those who cherish the West to understand that the war against Israel is a war against all of us. By denying its roots, Europe has destroyed its defences. For example, the socialist welfare state has contributed greatly to a declining birth rate on the continent. Now it must cope with millions of immigrants, many of whom are hostile to the host culture and refuse to integrate. What a horrible historical exchange took place: Six million Jews murdered and barely five decades later there are up to twenty million immigrants with a significant alienated component in their midst. The Ottomans were halted at Vienna in 1683 but Europe now finds itself in a very vulnerable situation. Sold out by their elites, the ignorant taxpayers of Europe are subsidising the slow destruction of their civilization. Unless there is a spiritual re-awakening and a rediscovery of the European heritage, the future looks bleak. Eurabia is a magnificent book, thoroughly researched and well written. Additional information on the current situation may be found in the books The Force Of Reason and The Rage And The Pride by Oriana Fallaci, Unholy Alliance by David Horowitz, The Dragons Of Expectation by Robert Conquest and Our Culture, What's Left Of It by Theodore Dalrymple. Eurabia is one of the most important boooks of our time regarding the threat of radical Islam. It should be read, and actions should be taken to prevent what is happening in Europe from happening here. It is a courageous work and is essential to understand the treat of Radical Islam and Dhimmi's who allow themselves to become the tools of ignorance and hate.

This is very important reading for everybody. It tells of the shadows of Hitler in Europe and how this murky picture cooperates with the corresponding fascism of Islam. Both Hitler and the Kuran were/are against Jews.

Very ancient ones indeed. As ancient as 600 BCE. Read the biblical book of Daniel, chapter 7 in particular. The enemies of G-d are those kingdoms which conquered Judea so that no Davidic king would or has ever rule(d) again in Israel. (Christians believe Christ is a descendant of David through His earthly, foster, jewish parents and who will return again to reclaim His kingdom and His people). The kingdoms described in chapter 7 are arabic-Persian and Babylonian, and european-Greek and Roman.
In chapter 17, "Eurabia Against America", Bat Ye'Or discusses why many european leaders and media spokespersons have become so Anti-American, Anti-Israeli, and pro-Islam. America, under George W. Bush's leadership has clearly responded strongly against Al-Qaeda, the terrorist forces behind the World Trade Center attack in 2001 and many other terrorist attacks throughout the world. Bat Ye'Or quoted one French spokesperson for the Paris Foundation of Strategic Research who had called for a break with ties to the U.S. and expressed some sympathies with Al-Qaeda. And upon that thought she asks the question "Are we to understand by this that Europe, unable to fight terror, should seek protection by siding with al-Qaeda? It rings old bells..." That there has been political maneuvering by some europeans at the expense of the Israelis has been documented in this book too, but to my mind comes evidence from Israel's long time, former defense minister, Moshe Dayan's autobiography where he talks about the many crises Israelis faced pre and post May 14, 1948. French President Charles de Gaulle aided Nasser's Egypt indirectly by denying the Israeli's the ammunition they had bought from France because the French didn't want Israel to start a war, and yet the Soviets were at that time readily pouring arms into Egypt as early as 1967 and which continued in Egypt and places like Syria up until 1973 when the horrific, but fortunately brief Yom Kippur War was waged. That there has been active collaboration of peoples within these regions of the world, Eur-abia, on various projects inimical to the welfare of the free, western world, is quite, quite obvious. The Great War, WWI, was a result of Kaiser Wilhelm, inflaming parts of Europe and the muslim world against, primarily Great Britain where his cousin, King George V ruled. The Germans had initiated a railway, funded by the Deutsche Bank to link Berlin to Baghdad as early as 1903. The German Kaiser approved of the many massacres of Armenians throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's which culminated in the most infamous of massacres, the Armenian Genocide of 1914-1917 which resulted in the deaths of one million plus persons which of course was merely a prelude to what happened in Germany from 1933-1945 which culminated in the Shoah, the Holocaust which resulted in the deaths of six million plus persons, as we all know. See books like The High Walls of Jerusalem by Ronald Sanders, Peter Hopkirk's Great Game series, Peter Balakian's The Burning Tigris. This book is Bat Ye'Or's latest book and of all her books, it is the most contemporary one, most relevant to events happening in the world today. However, her other books lay the foundation for not only this book's contents but for understanding how the world of Islam operates, particularly with relation to other peoples like jews, christians, hindus, etc. who have been conquered by Islamic forces. In this book, she examines how europeans have responded to events such as those in Lebanon in the 1970's and 1980's. "While the PLO and its allies preyed on the Lebanese christians, wiping out whole villages, desecrating and burning churches, murdering and mutilating corpses (as at Damur in 1976), Europe was supporting Arafat." Hmm. And the PLO, Hamas, and Al-Qaeda are the most militant and rabid groups of muslims that exist in the world today. And to my knowledge are the ones readily flocking to Gaza and southern Lebanon, which used to be populated mostly by christians, to terrorize innocent Israeli civilians, like the Orthodox jewish man who was stabbed to death just a few days ago. It seems to me that we should all be very wary of not only who we support but of who we believe and should think very carefully of ways we can not help those who destroy. Isn't that what anti-terrorism is all about??? Islam is a struggle, one that will never end until the end of days. In my mind, you will never convert me. If you know anything about me, you'll understand what I mean by that. I've learned so much about Islam and early christian history from reading Bat Ye'Or's few books. One sentence which I underlined in Jacques Ellul's Foreword to her book The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam, states quite truthfully, "the Jihad is an institution and not an event...it is part of the normal functioning of the muslim world." I must admit, I do tend to think of it as an event as that of September 11, yet the struggle on an ideological plane goes on all of the time which Bat Ye'Or documents quite scholarly all throughout this book; the many conferences and commissions that have been held by muslims and/or europeans can be found in the Appendices. Also, Peter Balakian's book The Burning Tigris speaks of Islamic influences on Universities and Colleges in America. I found also very informative Bat Ye'Or's 16th chapter entitled "The Islamization of Christianity" which is also not a recent phenomenon nor is Eurabia. Anyway, Eurabia is definitely a MUST READ. Highly recommended. (However, I must clarify, Bat Ye'Or makes it clear that not all europeans or arabs are anti-Israeli, pro-Islam, or anti-American, but for the most part, those speaking the loudest, within the media and political circles, tend to reflect these Nazi-esque attitudes. Also, in response to another reviewer, about American, evangelical or protestant support for Israel, one finds extremely strong support or the direct opposite, but for the most part, because these groups of people put much stock in the biblical narrative believing it is G-d's very words, I think the support is strong. G-d's covenant with Abraham is that He would bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you. Also, a fellow christian told me many years ago, that the jews are usually the first groups of people to warn and notify christians when severe persecution is going on in far reaches of the globe, and his words I think have proved true time and time again). First, I will say that I agree w/bat Ye'or that if Palestinians are going to talk about the "right of return," especially in context of "the Arab nation," then Arab countries need to acknowledge the right of return for Jews who got booted from their countries after the establishment of Israel.
That said, the book is a mix of poorly reasoned hairsplitting (bad logic) and deliberate misinterpretation of some evidentiary warrants with deliberate bypassing of countering evidence (bad empirical warrants of support). Before looking at that -- a sidebar. Not every liberal, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim or atheist by religious background, who calls into moral question some of Israel's activities is antisemitic. Certainly not every one of these is a budding replacement for Noam Chomsky. Yet, it would seem that she holds that. Second overarching point. Her divide and conquer methods, of America vs. Europe in general, and specifically on different relations toward both Arabs and Jews, just won't wash. Well into the beginning of the period of detail in her book, West Germany continued to make reparations, and willingly, to Israel. And, in light of books such as Craig Unger's "House of Bush, House of Saud," her refusal to acknowledge the vast number of pro-Arab/Islamicist U.S. official actions is logically tendentious, or, in plain English, LAUGHABLE. Also, her failure to distinguish France from Europe needs to be mentioned. Let's look at some of the specifics in detail now. First, her claim that UN Resolution @42's call for Israel's withdrawal from "the territories" of occupation does NOT mean **all** the territories is logically tendentious and in plain English again is LAUGHABLE. LAUGHABLE, also, is her claim that Arab political pressure combined with the 1973 oil embargo was the sole, or nearly sole, agent in causing the morphing of an economics-only EEC into a foreign policy-oriented confederation, today's EU. Rather, diplomatic openings provided by U.S.-Soviet detente, the increasingly non-Soviet communist path of China, the move of nonaligned nations to look more and more for a Third Way of world affairs that did not include serving as U.S. or Soviet military bases or proxies, and even the development of multiple Third Ways, all provided openings for EEC members, especially as it expanded its size, to think seriously about projecting a larger, and no longer exclusively economic, shadow on the world stage. Ignoring counterexamples to her theories of current Muslim history, above all Turkey, can be nothing but deliberate. Now, let's look at some more specific wrong-headed claims. Page 107: "The Palestinian Authority -- where a culture of hate, xenophobia and racism flourishes against Jews, Christians and the West." Really? Did anybody explain that hatred of Christians to Arafat's Christian wife? Page 109: If she had made these claims against the UK, not just continental governments, she could easily have been sued for libel. And what are those claims? That European governments, above all the French, are basically acting just like the Nazis in organizing and coordinating the random acts of violence that have been directed against Jews in recent years. Page 121: The key graf that shows this book was deliberately written as a neoconservative screed. Bat Ye'or talks about the occupation of Kurdistan by Turkey, Iraq and Syria. An independent Kurdistan has long been a wet dream of neocons and also of certain people and offices in official Israeli government positions. Mossad agents are reported to have been active in "Kurdistan" since the invasion of Iraq. Page 164: Yes, the Muslim invasion of Andalusia involved burning, pillaging, rapine, enslavement and deportation. So? What invasion DIDN'T involve those things at that time? Hmmm... Provencal and Burgundy, over 200 years, were invaded and pillaged by Muslims, Vikings and Magyars all three. All three engaged in all of these activities. Have we forgotten about the pagan Temujin/Ginghiz Khan, to whom no Muslim conquerer could closely compare? Or the pagan Stalin of our times? Or the Christian Crusades? Or, for that matter, even the Jewish pillagings and exterminations mentioned in the Tanakh, where Yahweh commands Saul to kill even the livestock of the Amalekites. Yes, the Muslim conquest and occupation of Andalusia were not pretty. And not all Muslim dynasties were equally enlightened. But bat Ye'or goes out of her way to focus solely on the unenlightened ones. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-08-04 05:21:40 EST)

The reader is provided with an excellent, well written, presentation which investigates how the European Union has allegedly become overtly anti-American and anti-Israel.
Particular emphasis being placed on what is cited as the subversion of the European Union through Islamic hostility, towards what is described as the "Islamization" of the continent. Attention being drawn to the EU's perceived `need' of the Arab bloc of nations in order that the EU can "establish itself as a strategic rival to America". The reader is presented with a succession of international agreements revealing an inferred European agreement to support the Arab/Islamic world's political aims - particularly its anti-Israel stance - in exchange for favoured treatment in Arab/Islamic world markets. Indeed, whilst a plethora of related subjects are dealt with, perhaps the core issue revolves around policies, attitudes and politics pertaining to the Arab/Palestinian - Israeli issue. The book discusses how the EU has made Israel the `cornerstone' of it's relations with the Arab world and the US - and even matters pertaining to the continent's own security. What is adjudged in this work to be the resulting "Euro-Arab Judeophobia" is alleged to have permeated virtually all levels of West European society. Many questions are asked from the outset, that investigate such issues as the decision of the European Union to propose a constitution that renounces and denies it's Judeo-Christian roots. Not least of the issues dealt with is how the EU's perceived relations with the Arab/Islamic world have allegedly permitted the `dismissal' of what is described as a "voluminous historical record of violations" to enable the EU to engagement in fruitful business and diplomatic ventures with what are termed "dictatorial regimes". The book in essence discusses what is described as a creeping `Islamicization' of a "decadent European Christendom", where there is cited to have been a considerable shifting of European attitudes and politics into the Arab-Islamic sphere of influence. Such being purportedly based upon a repeated policy of appeasement, accommodation, and cultural abdication before Islam which has allegedly been embraced with the intention of isolating Israel. EU involvement in the Middle East is discussed in the context of how there appears to follow a "well established pattern" whereby - to begin with - no interest is purportedly shown in calling on the Palestinian side to refrain from killing Israeli civilians and - secondly - the EU allegedly demonstrates no sympathy for the humanitarian and economic plight of Israeli civilians suffering from terrorism. The EU allegedly, instead, devoting itself to pronouncing extreme concern over the humanitarian situation in the "West Bank" and Gaza - but not in relation to the plight of the Israelis themselves. (Page 258). Some analysis is also given to the alleged effect that such EU/Arab alliances have had upon the religious realm, under the title of "Palestinianism", which has allegedly distorted the Biblical/Jewish roots of Scripture into a perceived "moral justification" for the elimination of the State of Israel. (Chapter 14). A political and religious framework being demonstrated that allegedly "demonizes" the Jews and discredits/undermines the Jewish roots of Christianity. Such pertinent issues being discussed are the place of "Palestinian Liberation Theology" & "Replacement Theology" within some elements of the professing Church today. Reference also being made as to how Palestinian politics and Christian theology have allegedly become inextricably linked in the Middle East. The effects that such have had upon the prevailing Islamic-Christian-Jewish relations in the region and the West itself are also examined. Many readers will undoubtedly disagree with the views of the writer and find many of these issues to be extremely contentious. However, to each question asked, an analysis is provided, with due reference to evidence which demands a verdict in itself. This is an absolute "must read" and will provide a ready explanation to those readers living in the EU, who find themselves becoming increasingly concerned with the issues discussed in this excellent work. Occasionally a book comes along that distinctly defines a social reality that has been developing before everyone's eyes and has gone previously undescribed. Samuel Huntington's ' The Clash of Civilization' is such a book, and Bat Ye'Or's Eurabia is another.
I am not a scholar of European society nor of Islam but the massive evidence presented here and argued so persuasively suggests that she has truly hit the mark- and that Western Civilization must wake up to this new danger if it is to survive. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-07 06:45:54 EST)

There is a concept in Islam...one of its central tenants actually that demands its followers not only forcibly convert/enslave/kill all people in the world to Islam but to do so only when relatively strong compared to the enemy (anybody not-Islamic or not that particular brand of Islamic). When you are weak, it is demanded that you act friendly and try to insinuate yourself into their culture, waiting for an opportunity to attack. These are demands. Failure to comply carries the death penalty and no dissent is allowed. Luckily, the Islamics are so crazy that every single concentration of them weakens and fails, just like it does with ALL non-legitimate political movements. And Islam was NEVER a religion, any more than the moonies were a religion. The central founders had zero belief in what they profess and made the whole thing up as a tool for tricking gullible/evil people into helping them sieze power.
In the modern age, the Islamics haven't gained much in the way of real power. Yes, they have economic power in the form of oil, but only because we (in we, I mean the civilized world) gave it to them in the hopes they would use it to drag themselves out of the muck and make something of themselves. Stupid idea that has lead to the current state of world affairs, but that's another story. What's important to note is just how messed up our good european allies are. Not learning their lessen from nearly being wiped out by the Nazis, they are once again in danger of being wiped out (and I'm not talking euphemism here....I fear for actual genocide) but not by a strong military force...oh no. But, by a weak one. Literally, they are rolling over with the slightest of provocation. You see this in all aspects of european society...from the tolerance of drug users, the refusal to prosecute serious violent crime, to huge gangs of thugs victimizing the innocent with impunity, to their economic and political policy. The whole thing is shameful. So shameful in fact that, when the inevitable happens.....when Islam attempts to formally take over europe and throw people into ovens, and Europe cries out once again to the Unites States for help. I say, tell them no. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-07 06:45:54 EST)

First, Bat Ye'or is clearly an important historian. Her previous work explores the history of Islamic conquests and the fate of non-Muslims under Muslim rulers. It is valuable work -- as important as any good research on the history of Christian oppression of non-Christians or heretics. But in "Eurabia", Ye'or turns to the present and future. And she sees only more of the same: Muslims will continue seeking to conquer the world. Not only that, Ye'or accuses that the jihadists have now turned Europe itself into their ally against Judeo-Christian civilization. As she explains, the jihadist "ideology, strategy, propaganda, and phraseology were conceived, formulated, and imposed on a reluctant European public opinion by a strong Arab and Western political and ideological alliance, including Third Worldists, Leftists, Communists and the Extreme Right". (p. 86)
With a blizzard of facts and citations, Ye'or lays out her proofs of a new Euro-Arab Axis against Western values. Where many Muslims claim that a Jewish conspiracy controls America, Ye'or argues that Muslims are close to controlling Europe: "The strengthened EU framework has institutionalized a symbiotic Euro-Arab partnership preparing a Kafkaesque cultural and political totalitarianism, wherein Islamist jihadist values subvert the whole European conception of knowledge, human rights, and fundamental individual liberties." (p. 269) For Ye'or, all recent efforts toward "dialogue", "equality" or "justice" between Muslims and others have been a sham pretext for creeping cultural conquest by Muslims. The Westerners who promoted such accords have merely appeased insatiable aggressors. Since Muslims believe that only their religion comes from God and all others serve Satan, it seems there is no realistic prospect for good relations with these people. Ye'or advocates a different approach: "The EU financing plan for 2003 included several projects in the West Bank, Gaza, and Arab countries which, like Syria, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority, are breeding grounds of anti-Western Islamic fanaticism. Without Europe's financial aid and know-how, those countries would hardly be able to feed their own growing populations. Europe could easily compel them to abandon their racist culture, instead of vindicating it." (p. 202) In interpreting recent events, Ye'or moves beyond solid history into the realm of conspiracy theory. Her arguments are compelling. Her indictments of hate crimes by Muslims are damning. Her knowledge is vast and her memory long. She does not forget a crime against her people. For Ye'or, it seems that the difficult path towards forgiveness and civil relations is closed till the war is done. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-07 06:45:55 EST)

Outside the fall of communism, the major event of the past twenty years was the swtich of the European Left from Israel to the Arab/Islamic cause. As late as 1967, Europe overwhelming support the Jewish state. Then came the oil embargo and France raised the white flag, switching allegiances in midstream. Others followed suit and today Israel (and Jews) are as isolated and resented across the continent as ever before. The question of why a society of alleged admirers of freedom prefer primitive dictatorships to a Western, open society is never raised. The answer would be too embarrassing. It's not only the Left but every facet of European society that demonizes "Zionists". Who says that unremitting propaganda does not work?
This is a story within a story. The larger picture is the total disentegration of Europe as a culture. Gone are former ties of religion, democracy and muscular nationalism. Instead there is a squishy socialism, a beauracracy of nobodies and a rampant loss of respect for any value except skepticism. Europe has made her decision to exit with a whimper rather than a bang. I am not sold on the author's insistence that there is a formal agreement between the two parties but that hardly matters. Both sides implicitely understand the arrangement - Europe is to lend unwavering support to the Arab cause, stop all aid to Israel, and in return will be given an easier slavery. One sees the results of this alliance everywhere- agreement with Muslim demands, rabid anti-Americanism, support for "Palestine", scorn of democracy in the Middle East. Defense is redefined as slow surrender and an obsession to please at all costs. The other side does not matter - Iran, Iraq, China, Arabia - they are all to be placated with nice words and hard cash. And though I can buy the arguement that initially it was strictly monetary, the fact is that philosophically, Europe has crossed the Rubicon and is on a road with no return. The author points out that most Europeans have knowledge of the dhimmitude within a Muslim society yet have inexplicably chosen this pathway. And unlike the Greeks, whose culture survived centuries of occupation, modern Europe has neither the will nor soul to fight. This book should server as a warning to all who say that values are not important. The future dhimmitude of Europe is the best antitode of that idea. Bat Ye'or has written a book which has disappointed me somewhat. Firstly, having focused on the main title, I expected a book about Europe and how it is changing under the influence of its muslim minority. Instead it should have been entitled "How Europe and the Arab world have become allies against Israel". Still, there is room for such a book because I believe the basic assumption of the book is largely correct, i.e. that since 1973 Europe, led by France, has become more and more biased against Israel to curry favor with the Arab world.
However, what could have been a very good book is marred by some unneeded simplifications and exaggerations. The main one is the theme of the first half of the book : a secretive, somewhat sinister group, the Europe Arab Dialogue, consisting of European politicians, who have been singularly successful at subverting the entire policy of a whole continent against Israel. Never mind that few names of these politicians are mentioned sound familiar to me. Instead, I think European elites prefer the Palestinians merely because it looks fashionable at dinner parties to claim to be on the side of "freedom fighters" like Che Guevarra and the PLO, not because Europeans are so anti-semite as the author suspects (they may be in France, but they are not in many other countries, in particular Northern Europe). It is not because so many intellectuals happened to defend Stalinist Russia that they were in his pay either...They were merely "useful idiots" without a need for a sinister body to steer them. Similarly, I don't buy the author's argument that Europeans chose the side of the Arabs in their conflict with the Israelis because they have been reduced to dhimmi status, i.e. lower class who have to pay tribute to their muslim masters. It is even more depressing : European elites - mainly politicians and the media - have freely chosen the side of the Arabs, not because Europe feels forced to for oil supplies (that may have been so in 1973, but with real oil prices falling for 30 years, it has been a buyers' market until now) and neither because they hope to buy peace from terrorism (Europe's Arab bias started 30 years before 9/11), but because they think it is cool to say the opposite of the US. I do think that the author makes a convincing case that the whole shift in European politics re Israel has been driven by France purely for its own (myopic) geo-political ambitions. Lastly, I did miss a number of very important topics in this debate. The author says nothing about the impact of future demographics in Europe on its relation with the Arab world (and hence on its mortal enemy, Israel) and - astonishingly - nor does the author say a word about Turkey and the impact its membership of the EU would have. All in all, in terms of style, way too much detailed quotes of obscure conferences between European and Arab politicians many years ago, and no speculation about the road ahead. But the description of how hypocritical Europeans have been in this conflict remains devastating. Warning : if you did protest against Operation Iraqi Freedom, you probably won't like this book at all (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-07 06:45:55 EST)

Bat Ye'or starts off by asking a number of questions about what looks like an Islamization of Europe. They include:
"Why have generations of Europeans been taught in universities to despise America and to harbor an implacable hatred for Israel?" "Has the 1930s - World War II alliance of Arab jihadists with European Nazis and fascist trends been resurrected today?" "Why does Europe call 'inviolable international boundaries' the 1949 armistice lines between Jordan and Israel, which were never recognized then as international boundaries by the Arab/Muslim world nor by other states?" She also asks if the Arab jihad against Israel merely aims at eliminating Israel or has more ominous designs. And she points out that since jihad does target Christianity worldwide, European support for jihad is self-destructive. Bat Ye'or attributes this self-capitulation to Arab demands to a number of causes, including French anti-Americanism, some antisemitism, and also mutual interests in getting political power in Europe. This book describes the European cult of Levantine Arabism. It is a counterproductive cult, given the degree to which it perverts organizations. When human rights organizations are applauding terrorism, something has clearly gone wrong. It might appear that European society is stable and immune from a major catastrophe. And my initial reaction to the increasing Islamization of Europe has been positive: it ought to make the place more cosmopolitan and makes the society stronger. However, if the result is a totalitarian takeover, we have more reason to be concerned. Bat Ye'or knows that societies that look stable can vanish. Her local one did. She grew up in Egypt, and the Jews of Egypt are long gone now. Reading this book, I was reminded of Arthur Koestler's "Promise and Fulfilment." In that book, Koestler explained how the British abandoned their commitment to the Zionists. According to Koestler, Britain did not sacrifice the Jews to her oil interests, instead, "oil interests served as a pretext for her sincere wish to liquidate her Zionist commitments." I remember how struck I was by this self-blackmail. About how the British "wanted to be bullied and blackmailed out of their commitments to the Jews, and they created the instrument for Arab bullying and blackmail." Koestler wrote that in 1949. Bat Ye'or's description of European support for Arafat looks eerily like the same kind of self-blackmail. She traces it from 1967, when de Gaulle dramatically ended French support for Israel just before the six-day war. And the oil embargo served as a useful pretext for establishment of European anti-Israeli policies. French support for Arab irredentism after that almost single-handedly precluded peace between the combatants. In 1973, Europeans were instrumental in the creation of a bogus Levantine Arab "people" and the "internationalization of what was essentially a regional conflict." As the author explains, the anti-Israeli cult is at its most obvious when one looks at European media. One of many examples is that television filming has been "coordinated to show only children stone-throwers, carefully avoiding the gunmen behind them." During the Lebanon war, Arafat's thugs "inflicted mass murder, abductions, untold suffering, and destruction on over a hundred thousand Christians in Lebanon." However, "the valiant Christian resistance was demonized by a European press" that sided with Arafat and his gang. Ye'or explains that "you cannot teach people hate and then ask them to practice peace." This cult of hate needs to cease. And Bat Ye'or says that Europeans have to stop acting like dhimmis. Right now, "flattery, servility, anti-Americanism and anti-Zionism, coupled with a tremendous fear of Islamic terrorism, dominate current European media and political discourse." And Arab Christians are basically Marcionists: they've dispensed with their Old Testaments. Meanwhile, Arab terrorists, bolstered by a huge flow of funds from Europe, have become stronger. The author, quoting Rachel Ehrenfeld, thinks that 'maybe it's time to hold European donors legally accountable for their investments.' The point of this book is not that Europe is changing. Many societies change. The point is that this change looks counterproductive and not entirely desirable. I have to agree with the premise that this alliance is destructive. After all, what benefit will there be to the people of Europe or the Arab world if they manage to destroy Israel? Not much. Israel is small, and there isn't much to steal. And the abandonment of truth, justice and human rights will outweigh any benefit that might exist. This is an excellent book. It explains why Europe is making sure that the Arab-Israeli dispute will have little chance of being resolved. And it envisions a potentially unhappy future for much of Europe. I highly recommend it. On a recent trip to Switzerland, I encountered a gigantic mural in the Zurich Airport which depicted a proto-typical Swiss goat and sheep herder leading his flocks over an Alpine mountain pass, meeting a fully cloaked and turbaned Arab camel herder. Below the mural, a caption read, "You never know who you'll meet in Switzerland". This bucolic image struck me as bizarre, not having been personally conditioned to Western Europe's deliberate sociopolitical transformation over the past 30 years. I was reminded of these prescient words, written a quarter century ago by the great historian of Medieval European Islam, Charles Emmanuel Dufourcq, who was concerned (even then) that historical and cultural revisionism might precipitate a recurrence of
"...the upheaval carried out on our continent (i.e., Europe) by Islamic penetration more than a thousand years ago...with other methods." And Dufourcq characterized the original methods which facilitated the violent, chaotic jihad conquest of the Iberian peninsula, and other parts of Europe, indistinguishable in motivation from modern acts of jihad terrorism, like the Madrid bombings on 3/11/04: "It is not difficult to understand that such expeditions sowed terror. The historian al-Maqqari, who wrote in seventeenth-century Tlemcen in Algeria, explains that the panic created by the Arab horsemen and sailors, at the time of the Muslim expansion in the zones that saw those raids and landings, facilitated the later conquest, if that was decided on: `Allah,' he says, `thus instilled such fear among the infidels that they did not dare to go and fight the conquerors; they only approached them as suppliants, to beg for peace.'" Within a decade after Dufourcq's death in 1982, the historian Bat Ye'or (from a 1991 French interview, published in English translation in 1994) echoed his intuitive concerns about Europe's re-Islamization, and warned more broadly, "I do not see serious signs of a Europeanization of Islam anywhere, a move that would be expressed in a relativization of religion, a self-critical view of the history of Islamic imperialism...we are light years away from such a development...On the contrary, I think that we are participating in the Islamization of Europe, reflected both in daily occurrences and in our way of thinking...All the racist fanaticism that permeates the Arab countries and Iran has been manifested in Europe in recent years..." Bat Ye'or is the most informed and insightful contemporary scholar of those unique Islamic institutions which regulate the relations between Muslims and non-Muslims: jihad, and its corollary institution, dhimmitude, the repressive and humiliating system of governance imposed upon those non-Muslims (i.e., dhimmis) subjugated by jihad. Although she coined the term dhimmitude, Bat Ye'or's characterization of the salient features of this institution is entirely consistent with the views of seminal scholars from the early and mid 20th century, such as Sir Jadunath Sarkar, and Antoine Fattal. Bat Ye'or's seminal contribution to the study of jihad and dhimmitude has been her unparalleled ability to accomplish two related tasks: (I) methodically and compulsively pooling a vast, rich array of primary source data; (II) providing a brilliant synthetic analysis of these data to demonstrate convincingly the transformative power of jihad and dhimmitude, operating as designed, within formerly Christian societies of the Near East and Asia Minor. Eurabia: the Euro-Arab Axis portrays Western Europe's recrudescent dhimmitude, chronicled in real time, by our most knowledgeable contemporary scholar of the dhimmi condition. Living as an eyewitness in Geneva - a major European center, with its United Nations, NGOs and other international fora - Bat Ye'or describes in painstaking detail, the ongoing transformation of Europe into "Eurabia," a cultural and political appendage of the Arab/Muslim world. The use of the term "Eurabia", she notes, was first introduced, triumphally, in the mid-1970s, as the title of a journal edited by the President of the Association for Franco-Arab Solidarity, Lucien Bitterlein, and published collaboratively by the Groupe d'Etudes sur le Moyen-Orient (Geneva), France-Pays Arabes (Paris), and the Middle East International (London). The articles and editorials in this publication called for common Euro-Arab positions, at every level - social, economic, and commercial - and were contingent upon the fundamental political condition of European support for the Arab (and non-Arab) Muslim umma's jihad against Israel. These concrete proposals were not the musings of isolated theorists - they in fact represented policy decisions conceived in conjunction with, and actualized by, European state leaders, their ministers of foreign affairs, and European Parliamentarians. Bat Ye'or's "Eurabia" clearly transcends attempts to analyze the same contemporary phenomena by other pundits. This remarkable book is the product of her serendipitously apposite prior expertise, painstaking new research, brilliant insight, and intellectual courage. Bat Ye'or's analyses have profound implications for Western Europe which may be incapable of altering its Eurabian trajectory; her research may be even more important for the United States if it wishes to avoid Europe's fate: "Eurabia's destiny was sealed when it decided, willingly, to become a covert partner with the Arab global jihad against America and Israel. Americans must discuss the tragic development of Eurabia, and its profound implications for the United States...Americans should consider the despair and confusion of many Europeans, prisoners of a Eurabian totalitarianism that foments a culture of deadly lies about Western civilization. Americans should know that this self-destructive calamity did not just happen, rather it was the result of deliberate policies, executed and monitored by ostensibly responsible people. Finally, Americans should understand that Eurabia's contemporary anti-Zionism and anti-Americanism are the spiritual heirs of 1930s Nazism and anti-Semitism, triumphally resurgent."
