| Answering Islam: The Crescent in Light of the Cross | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Answering Islam evaluates the claims of orthodox Islam from a Christian point of view, appealing especially to the Qur'an and the Bible. The authors, a Christian apologist and a former Muslim, provide apologetic answers to prepare Christians for ministry in the Islamic context. This second edition contains two new appendices, a new preface written in light of September 11, 2001, and updated information throughout. ''This book is a theological masterpiece, the most lucid and comprehensive theological analysis and critique of Islam from a Christian perspective I have ever seen. It is invaluable as a tool for understanding the most serious religious challenge to Christianity in the modern world.'' R. C. Sproul, Ligonier Ministries

I highly recommend to you the 2nd edition this book (even though I possess the first edition printed in 1993). I have read the 1993 edition through many times; I have highlighted it and dog-eared it and passed it on to others as well (always with the understanding that I MUST get my copy back). I will purchase this new edition to take advantage of the new section on African Americans in Islam.
Pros: If you are a Christian, this book will provide for you a general overview (as admitted by many reviewers here) of the doctrines of the Islam FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE. A clearer understanding will be gained as to why a Muslim might state to you, for example, that Bible Scriptures referring to Jesus such as Deuteronomy 18:15 (The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear ... ) and the gift of the Holy Spirit such as John 14:16 (And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever ... ) actually refer to the Prophet Muhammad. Also, one will be provided an inital biography of Prophet Muhammad as well as the doctrine and characteristics of the Qur'an. As Christians, we should be aware that Muhammad's place in Islam is radically different than the place of Jesus in Christianity and the Qur'an is not equivalent to the Bible as some might contend. Also, the authors provide detailed explanations of the doctrines of Christianity. Many Christians do not understand and are unable to explain the basic doctrines of our own faith and this book would be valuable if it only included the sections on Christian beliefs. If you are a Muslim or a seeker drawn to Islam, this book will provide a general overview of the Christian faith and its objections to Islamic belief FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE. If I were Muslim, rather than blasting the book, I would be glad to be informed of Christianity's counter-viewpoints so I could answer challeges to my faith intelligently. Cons: The book will not be an quick and easy read ... Norman Geisler is a respected Christian theologian and the book is academic in presentation. To completely master the text, I went back over the book several times over several years with a highlighter, a Bible and a Qur'an like a college student. However, if you are Muslim or favorably drawn to Islam, I can understand why one would discount ANSWERING ISLAM since the book's objective is counter Islam and reaffirm Christianity FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE. The book does not falsely advertise itself and its authors clearly and plainly state they are writing FROM A CHRISTIAN (NOT MUSLIM) PERSPECTIVE. Conclusion: The book ANSWERING ISLAM is well cited, clearly footnoted and indexed with hundreds of comparative writings from both Muslim and Christian scholars for further study. One is able to go directly to a copy of Qur'an (admittedly, most readers must use an English translitertion as I did) and compare the Suras cited by the authors ... the Qur'an is not misquoted (and the Bible is not misquoted either). Therefore, I find it instructive so many of the negative reviews have been made by Muslims or persons defending the Muslim faith. There are countless books in the Islamic pantheon which offer counter-agruments to Christianity, beginning with the Qur'an itself ... for example, the Bible states Jesus was crucified and the Qur'an states Jesus was not crucified. The two texts and the two religions do not agree on Jesus and many other doctrines. Despite what has been said by many posters here, I do not see how this book is any more biased against Islam than any book with the objective of refuting Christianity FROM THE MUSLIM PERSPECTIVE such as "The Qur'an, the Bible, and Science" by Maurice Bucaille. Many negative reviewers have recommneded books by Muslim writers that disagree with Christianity while trashing this book by Christian writers that disagree with Islam. This is not consistent. The many negative reviewers (perhaps if they were more forthcoming) should admit that their objections due to their theological stance and not on whether the book was "good" or not. I am interpreting the many Islam-based negative reviews as some evidence that this book must be striking too close to home. This book is solid. P.S. Since I also own the CD-ROM which mirrors the web site www.answering-islam.org, I can attest that the web site is not connected to this book and these authors and contains totally different information. This book is very complete and thorough in the information provided. I definetely recommend it to anyone wanting to know anything about Islam. The reasoning and the critical thinking skills Geisler uses are undisputable when presented to anyone wanting to know the real truth and is willing to weigh the evidences of both religions.

Textual corruption of the Bible is not only Muslim/Qur'anic position but top learned Christian scholars, who are not blinded by their fundamentalist doctrines, admit and ascertain to this historic fact (e.g. Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why (Plus) by Bart D. Ehrman and The Cross & The Crescent by Jerald Dirks).
That said, to say that Muslims do not believe in Jesus is a blatant misinformation. Islam happens to be the only none Christian faith on the face of the earth that makes it an article of faith to believe in Jesus. Muslims believe (on the bases of the Qur'an) in his miraculous birth (i.e. without any male intervention), they believe that he gave life to the dead (by God's permission) and healed those born blind and the lepers (by God's Permission) and they believe that he was the Messiah (translated: `Christ' - not God; word `Christ' only means anointed/appointed, in this case, by God to deliver his message to the Jews). Muslims don't hate Jesus - quite the contrary; they love and revere Jesus Christ, so much so that unlike modern Christians, you'll never hear the name of Jesus from a Muslim's lips without the suffix `peace be upon him'. Qur'an claims to be the continuation and correction (from human corruption), of the same message of God delivered by all the prophets including Abraham, Moses and Jesus. Muslims truly go beyond lip service and practically follow him (if you could observe them closely in their daily life and look beyond the rampant political Islam-bashing going on in the west these days) e.g. their greetings `AsSalam-o-Aliqum' (Translated: `peace be upon you') is word-for-word the same as Jesus used to greet. They pray like Jesus (e.g. in the Garden on Gethsemane); falling on their faces in humility. Instead of following Paul, Muslims take Jesus' words at face value. Following on Jesus' words (Mat 5:17-20) they don't eat pork, are circumcised and keep the law and commandments of God just like Jesus did and preached to his followers. Simply put, Muslims pray and follow the God of Jesus Christ. What Muslims don't accept is that Jesus was God and that he died for anyone's sins. Both these ideas are later innovations and would have been repugnant to Jesus in his own time. He never claimed `I am God' and he never said `Worship me' - on the contrary he said `my father is greater than I (john 14:28); my father is greater than all (john 10:29); I can, of my own self, do nothing (john 5:30). Dying for someone else's sins and getting punished for someone else's crimes is unjust even from human imperfect standards (no civilized people ever allow that) and diametrically opposed to The Justice of God and His teaching. I give you Ezekiel-18 as my supporting evidence on this point. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-25 08:24:27 EST)

This is an excellent book and it addresses the concerns that the liberated West has about the threat of the backwards society in the Islamic Middle East. Oppression of women, intolerance, violence etc. are all some of the issues that this book looks at from the Christian eye as these horrible calamities are in the Muslim limelight. It's not just media, because we all know media is not blatantly out to get a certain group of people. Many of these problems today are in fact Muslim problems, and this book addresses these problems, the root causations behind them, and how a Christian can defend Christ and advocate for the triumph of good over evil in dialogue. This is the perfect book for a novice apologist who wants to jump start his or her knowledge base on teh topic.

'Answering Islam' is not focused on the political, prophetic, or current events aspect of Islam, but primarily examines Islam the religion, though the historical and political aspects are not totally neglected. The academic tone is not outright combative, but does convey a sense of Islam is wrong, Christianity is right, and here's why. For confirmation that this outside representation of Islam is fair, I'd recommend also learning of Islam by reading Islamic writings, including the Qu'ran, and conversing with Muslims personally. I have done this and consider 'Answering Islam' to be an accurate but general representation, noting (as the authors do themselves) that Muslims are not a monolithic group and there are many theological disagreements amongst them. The book also includes helpful appendices (including on sects), glossary, subject index, and a bibliography and a reading list for further study. Though written from a Christian perspective and including a defense of Christianity section, the book is not evangelistic so much as it is explanatory.

If you want to know what makes terrorists tick - this is a great read. By understanding Islam and portions of the Koran, one can understand how radical jihadists justify killing innocents. If you don't know anything about Islam the religion this is also a great resource. For example, I had no idea Islam came onto the scene well afer Judiasm and Christianity. Understanding this, it clearly appears to be a "cut-n-paste religion", borrowing heavily from each, and a blatant attempt to usurp each. Ergo - why you have muslims claiming Jerusalem as "their" holy city, the temple mount as "their" holiest site, Jesus was just a prophet, etc. etc. etc. Just a copycat religion - with servere overtones urging violence within their "holiest text" - leading to the violent behavior of some, and condoning / complacent behavior by the majority. Well written, cool and objective, and really just the facts.

As one raised in Islam, I truly wish more Christians would write books like these that would help break down the barrier between Muslims and Christians.

All religions are not equal, and this book finally looks at Islam with a clear Christian eye -- the eye that built Western civilization. Some religions encourage the murder of infidels and approve female slavery as part of "Allah's infallible word," and Christians need to confront these challenges to Western civilization. America has made a virtue out of assimilating various cultures in the past, but in the past assimilation was made easy because most of those imported cultures were from Europe and upheld tolerant Christian values. In fact, all the rights of Western civilization were built on Jesus' revolutionary, for the times, insistence on the equality of each human soul, whether male or female, Samaritan or Pharisee. Jesus especially protected women, when he told his disciples, "You cannot divorce." This was extraordinary thinking in the Mideast where men thought that God approved of men having female sexual slaves (not much has changed in that area of the world) and of killing or stealing from people who were not members of one's ethnic group. In contrast to Jesus, Mohammed cast these 7th century primitive tribal practices (polygamy, killing the "Samaritans," etc) in stone, approving them for eternity in the Koran.
As opposed to Islam's "rule of the sword," the values of Christianity have led to the establishment of the "rule of law", of tolerance, of support for human rights, of support for female dignity through monogamy. These days, however, the beneficiaries of this 2000 year old Christian, tolerant culture are undermining it from within by importing anti-human-rights religions under the illusion that diversity is harmless and has no consequences. The US is soon going to find out what "diversity" really means when large numbers of Muslims elected to city legislatures start insisting on "democratically" implementing their own brand of Sharia law (beheading? stoning?) and on allowing polygamous marriages (female sexual slavery). As these authors so trenchantly point out, the basic tenets of the Koran as well as the example of the Prophet's life are intolerant towards Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and especially, women. The US's 250 year old cocoon of the freedom from ethnic and religious strife which used to be ensured by the buffers of vast oceans has been eliminated by the ease of modern travel. The US's ability to keep its culture intact is under serious challenge by uncontrolled migrations -- abetted mostly by State Dept and US Gov bureaucrats for whom the word "ethnic" means only a new kind of restaurant. Despite the ignorance of the PC bureaucrats, the authors of the book under review are unafraid of confronting the danger that Islam offers to the values of Christian nations.
