Thank God for good men like Oliver North. I wish we could have more men in power with his faith and his understanding of our military's capabilities and purpose. I am also very thankful for the work being done in Iraq and Afganistan. It is not a finished work nor a perfect work, but it is certainly not a flawed effort as our news outlets lead us to believe.
Brining our troops home before they feel they are finished is not "supporting our troups." We need to let the military decide when it is time to come home and stop letting our brilliant politcians and reporters use their deployment as a political leveraging issue. I really enjoyed this book and it truly displays the unique mindset and committment that our service men and women possses. If we could have an entire nation of men and women like the ones that fill our armed forces, we could achieve so much more. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-10 10:01:58 EST)

This book is inspirational, informative, historical, compelling, and instills pride in our military. My husband is reading it now, and can't stop talking about how moving it is. I recommend it to anyone interested in hearing stories that won't be covered in the main-stream media. These are the types of stories we may have heard about during WWII, when America believed that pride in itself and its ideals -- the ideals for which we were fighting -- was merited. But you'll have to read this book to hear about these heroes today. The alphabet networks won't tell you, and the big newspapers won't tell you, because it is no longer politically correct to feel good about our country or the people who defend it.

Great book. What a real and descent way to tell the public the truth. No lies, no political punches, no smearing, no agenda except to speak the truth. Telling it like it is. Giving these brave men and women fair and honest coverage that earns them more respect than anyone on earth. Revealing the hard life of our soldiers out there making it each day without air conditioning, full course meals, and luxuries we take for granted. But they don't complain, they just do their job and much more. On top of that, the stories and pictures reveal relationships made with the Iraqi people and the progress made, tells such a different story than you will find on most news networks. And these are real and CURRENT pictures. Unlike the ones being shown over and over again from a few years ago and longer on the news. Mr. North and Mr. Holton, you can tell they are true patriots, kind, honest and care very much about the troops. They give them a chance to be heard. They bring your eyes there for just a little while. The troops don't have many ways to do that without certain party members screaming "political influence" which they frown on in the military. I say, tell it like it is! Also I like the way they educate you, explaining some of the history of Iraq and the Muslim people and what's happened over the years. Very informative and heartfelt. Makes you want to just go up to any soldier you see and give 'em a hug. Read the book! Nina Starrin

I have read a lot of military books before, but this one is by far the best one I have ever read. Although I have been out of the Marine Corps for a number of years I felt as though I was right there living it with the best of the best. A very powerful book, not recommended for faint of heart individuals. It is about time an actual first hand account be put out for the people to read, and get the truth about what has been happening over in country.

Being a former Marine officer, this book and its stories creates a sense of pride in the current generation of Americans who give more than most to insure our continued freedoms. Well written, extraordinary stories of courage and heroism.

Oliver North has written a fantastic book that is part chronological history, part political-military analysis, and one-hundred percent informative and interesting account of our involvement to date in the war on terror. His unique combat veteran-turned-combat reporter perspectives were fully complemented by honest, accurate descriptions of weapons, equipment, and operations, and the words and lives of countless American heroes fighting for the freedoms of millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Philippines.
Rather than try and describe the book, below I have included selected quotes that I believe will provide a much better description of what this book is and what it offers to readers. I would be remiss, however, if I did not highlight what was beyond a doubt the best part of the book to me--the final four chapters: "Hero Values," "Wounded Warriors," "The `Other Heroes,'" and, "Getting It Done!" -"My heroes wear flak jackets, flight suits, and combat boots. This book is for and about them." (p.9) -"Real heroes are selfless. Those who serve in harm's way in this war have that quality in abundance. And so do their families and loved ones at home." (p.12) -"One female correspondent from a European news service was over heard asking--or was it telling?--one of the Marines that she had "never seen so much bravado, machismo, or arrogance" in her life. The young [Non-Commissioned Officer] NCO listened and appeared to mull over her grievance before replying, `Yes ma'am, that's why they call themselves U.S. Marines.'" (p.68) -"`Now think of this,' said 1st Lt. Ken Williamson, one of the squadron's pilots. `Here's a shipment worth more than sixty million dollars being signed for by a twenty-two-year-old Marine sergeant. Where else would you get that kind of responsibility at that age?' Where else indeed?'" (p.70) -"The Marine veteran, tongue planted firmly in his cheek, replied, `Dust storms aren't allowed to affect us. It's contrary to Marine Corps policy.'" (p.73) -"...I find Jerry Driscoll alone in the rear of the ready room tent, drafting the most difficult correspondence anyone ever has to write: letters from a commander to the relatives of his dead Marines. Having had to write such missives myself, I know exactly how he feels. The burden of command is never heavier than at a time like this." (p.95) -"Many [of the embedded journalists with coalition forces] expressed surprise at the humanity and compassion of coalition troops--young men going out of their way, often at great personal risk--to care for Iraqi civilians, enemy prisoners, and wounded combatants." (p.101) -"`I turn to the lance corporal, `The New York Times says the Marines are out of food, water, and ammo. Are you hungry?... No, sir...Are you thirsty?...No, sir...Are you short on ammo?...No, sir... `Well, what do you need?' I persist...Without a moment's hesitation, the young Marine replies, `Just send more enemy, sir.'" (p.123) -"When election day [in Iraq] was over, [Lance Corporal] LCpl Jeffrey Heath stood in front of our FOX News camera while I asked him if the day had been a success. His reply: `Absolutely. This is why we're here--to help the Iraqi people gain the kind of freedoms that we take for granted back in the States.' I couldn't have said it better myself.'" (p.197) -"Some people here at home claim, `I support the troops; I just don't support what they are doing in Iraq or Afghanistan.' Those who believe that statement need to try this experiment. When you get home after work, walk in the front door and tell your spouse: `I love you...but I really don't like the way you drive, cook, look after the house, or care for the kids--and that needs to change right now.' Then see where you sleep that night." (p.221) -"In all my years in and around the military, I have never seen so many men flock to chapel services, Bible study groups, and prayer sessions. I have seen them put pocket Bibles into their flak jackets and gather in a prayer circle before and after dangerous missions. In the midst of terrible gunfights, I've heard these men take vulgar language to the level of a new art form. But when the shooting stops, I've seen them reading the Bible in a quiet moment." (p.229) -"I [Marine Sergeant Gregory Edwards, father of two] lost my legs for the people of Iraq, so their children will be able to run around, just like mine. If time was turned back, I'd do it all over again." (p.237) -"Danger is a constant companion, but the source of their motivation is no secret--they hunt down the savages overseas in order to safeguard their loved ones at home." (p.254) If the measure of a book is the emotions and reactions it elicits from readers, then this book was a definite winner with me: I laughed out loud, I cried tears of joy and sadness, I shook my head in disgust, and I reminisced fondly about my twenty-plus years in and supporting the Marines. When my son is old enough to read about and understand the origins and initial actions in our war on terror, I want him to read this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-23 02:35:14 EST)

The photographs are amazing. This book is telling the story from "ground zero" in Iraq of the heroic men and women we have serving and giving their lives for our freedom. I am purchasing one each for two men that I am very proud of who served there, and one for my son who may go soon to either Afghanistan or Iraq.

This is a great book about people who truly believe in what they do. You will like it no matter what your politics. Maybe it will help people realize what the military is realy all about. Oliver North is truly one of our great heroes himself, although someone should tell him he is not in the Corps anymore and he should go home and "sit on the porch". I'm sure his wife would agree. He has done more for our country than any other ten men, but he is a great storyteller and I love reading his books.

Normally I would not choose to read a military/war book. I purchased this book for my teenage sons because I had heard so many wonderful reviews about it. When it came in the mail, I peeked inside and the pictures were so compelling, I started to read it. I didn't want to put it down! Before long I had read the whole book and I loved it!!!! It was refreshing and also eye opening to hear about what it's been like in Iraq from someone who has actually spent so much time there up-close and personal. Thank you Oliver North for sharing so eloquently the reality of the amazing sacrifice our troops (and their families) make for us every day! Also, thank you for reminding us why they are there!!! Listening to the main stream media has become akin to reading the "National Enquirer" while standing in the check out line. Since reading this book, I have a new perspective on the war and our heroes!

Purchased as a gift for a Mom with two military sons, I found it a quick, compelling read. One of the most important books I have read in recent times. Real. Factual. Balanced. Documented and true. All those things we don't get in slanted media soundbytes. It is also emotional: heart-warming and heart-breaking, and creating within a sense of pride, respect, thanks, and hope.

This was my first order on Amazon and included a written and audio book. The audio book arrived first and the package was infested with ant larvae and eggs. I sent an email explaining this and expected an exchange. Instead, I was advised how to return the item for a refund.
The written book had not been sent yet, so I cancelled it and mailed back the sealed audiobook for a refund. I have not received a refund as yet and would like to know the status? Your customer service continues to be poor. Don Miller (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-12 00:10:55 EST)

Finally someone is recognizing the real heroes in this world. The American people are so self-absorbed, they need to open their eyes and read this book. It's well written, reporting on all activities in layman's terms and packed with great photos of our servicemen.

I am not finished reading American Heroes as I am reading it with someone else and must wait until they have time to get together with me, but so far, we have both found it to be an honest and positive read. Oliver North is thoroughly knowledgeable of his topic and allows these true heroes to tell their story in an inspiring and reassuring way. I have much input from other military families who have also purchased the book; they are favorably impressed as well.

Excellent book! Col. North's experience with the brave young men and women of the American Military is amazing. I was truly touched and filled with pride at the same time. I'm thankful to live in a country where there are so many Heroes that are willing to put themselves in harms way for others. We owe our soldiers a debt of gratitude to which could never be paid.

American Heroes:...by Oliver North is an encouraging book to look at and read(the pictures are helpful in showing the story. It presents the positive experiences and contributions of many of our military, in spite of the dangers and losses. It describes the commitment of many of them to help the people of Iraq and Afganistan. It records the emphasis on compassion which is America at its best. If you are sick of the ordinary negative reporting,if you are dismayed by the fear-filled "cut and run" attitudes of some of our citizens, read the rest of the story presented to us in American Heroes:... YOu will be proud of our military and our country.

Whether you are for or against the war in Iraq/Afghanistan, you will find this book enlightening. At best, I am proud to say that Oliver North and editor Chuck Colton did a great job of preparing this book for the American public to read. It's a shame that it won't be read by the ones that need to read it, those that see the war there as nothing more than our country being bullies, when instead we try to help those that seek the truth that can free themselves as people; people that can and want to take care of themselves and their families, to live without fear of those that suppress their very existence. Thanks to those that support our Troops and to those that write to tell about the positive (instead of just the negative) things that our military is doing and has done.

I am still reading this book and I love it. It is very easy to read and very informational. I want to know more about this war than what we hear on the news. I want the truth, good and bad. Our American soldies, airmen and marines are amazing. I thank God everyday for such people who are willing to put their lives on the line for us. We may not understand why they are there but they do and that is what matters. Thank you Colonel North for putting this book together.

I guess if you hate America, you should probably read another book, Ollie is a true patriot. Ollie makes a striking comparison to the Arm Chair quarterbacks(retired Generals) back in Washington and New York, making claims about fighting a war that is half way around the world. Over and over they were wrong. These embedded journalist, of which Ollie is a member really put their life on the line as much as the fighting men and woman. War is hell and Oliver North makes no claim to the contrary, he by no means glamorizes this horrid human experience. But like it or not WAR is just a fact of life, always has been and I suspect it always will be. He points out some of the good decisions that were made but without a big hoopla, he also points out some of the administrations fatal errors. The biggest in my mind was the policy decision to just let the enemy go off and harm us in other ways. History has shown when we put enemy troops to work rebuilding their country, they are much happier, well fed and for a small amount of money it would have saved lives and heartache. But instead, these defeated warriors went off to warlords and terrorist factions to sell their skills. If anyone thinks that Ollie is out to white wash the truth, they are sadly mistaken. The true stars of this book are of course the men and woman of our military, and the writer doesn't forget that for a moment. If you have an open mind about the invasion of Iraq and the aftermath then by all means read this book, if you have your mind already made up, don't waste your money.

As a former Marine I have a deep respect for the work that our troops are doing in Iraq. Col North brings home the horrors of war and the courage of the American warriors. This is a must read for all Americans who have fought to keep America free from oppresion. If we don't fight the crazies in Iraq, we will have to fight them again in New York.

It gives us civilians a look into the "ins and outs" of this war (i.e., why we are there (in case you don't know!) and what our men and women are doing over there).
Thank you for taking the time to put such a wonderful compilation of information and pictures together for us. Every American should read this book - it will open your eyes! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-21 00:05:55 EST)

Radical Islam is a result of US Foreign policy?...did the US have foreign policy in the 13th and 14th Century?...well no..there was no United States of America...was the USA formed when the latter books of the Quran were written, which called for jihad and had a more radical view?...then there are those silly "Crusades" launched by the silly Christians, I'm sure the US is responsible for that too...
Great book whether you are a fan of North or not...whether your for or against the war, or whether your christian or muslim.. it shows the true struggle that soldiers must endure. Not fair to give the book 1 star because of ignorance. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-20 07:11:42 EST)

Oliver North rises from the ashes of disgrace to talk about war heroes - what a joke. Are people's memories so short that they forget about Mr. North's illegal war that he headed in attempts to get rid of the Sandanista government in Nicaragua? Ollie is part of a long line of brain washed military geeks who buy the line that America is supposed to be the world's policeman. Except for America's involvement in WW11 almost every military campaign has been a mis-adventure - a BLOWBACK of foreign policy. Its the USA foreign policy that has triggered the rise of radical Islam. If they had pulled their base from Saudi Arabia after the Gulf War which the clerics had asked them too, (however they ignored) there would have no reaction by the Islamic clerics. A better title might have been: Black & White: How I see the world by Ollie North

I always read the reviews with great interest, and rely upon the consensus of reader views. The book sounds very good. Certainly the war against AQ and related groups is critical, yet this Iraqi war waged upon false pretenses, and our actions in the prisons in Baghdad and Guantanamo have brought pain and disgrace upon our nation. This author, while undoubtedly a military hero, broke the law in Iran-Contra (obeying President Reagan covertly). I am reluctant to rely upon reviews by Newt Gingrich, or from Fox News. Are there objective reviews here? Comments?

This is a high quality book in the National Geographic style. Well illustrated with scenes of the young people that are doing the job and relevant articles about their heroics. Not all heroics is dodging bullets and bombs. Sometimes it's taking the time to comfort a child or give aid to a civilian. Even enemy combatants are cared for by the troopers after the shooting stops. I give this book my highest recommendation. This is money well spent.American Heroes: In the Fight Against Radical Islam (War Stories)

It has been a challenge to gather accurate, encouraging information and insight into this conflict due to the fact that it is an unpopular endeavor among leading media outlets. I know Chuck Holton personally and have been following his work with Oliver North so that I know how much time and effort has been invested in delivering this insightful book. It is very refreshing to get my hands on information written and compiled by men with integrity who are committed to truth.

This book is a great addition to the conversation about our troops overseas. Oliver North is such a class act and really understands the plight of the men and women serving our country. Those of us who enjoy our liberties in this country need to get to know the men and women in this book. They are the protectors of our liberty. I would also hope the "talking heads" would all read this book for a look at reality in Iraq.

Bin Laden declared war on the West long before 9-11. This gives us cogent
reasons why we have to "stay the course" against fanaticism. We either pay the price now or we will pay a much higher cost later.Bob Young (high school history and Spanish teacher (Washington State). (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-20 07:11:43 EST)

If you want to know why we must fight and prevail in the war against Jihadist fascism, Oliver North provides us with a series of inspiring stories. This is a book for all Americans to read, and to remember. Bravo Zulus, Ollie, for once again giving us a ground-level sit-rep that we all must take to heart.

The book is loaded with pictures and short stories, most just a page or two, about American military men and women. The book is neither Republican nor Democrat. Lieutenant Colonel North makes the service men and women come alive through their stories, one after another. The snippets are page turners. You will read three or four stories every time you pick up this book because the stories are so compelling. This is the war told from the ground up by two guys who have "been there, done that." Even North's editor is a military man--an Army Ranger who flies helicopters.

This is a valuable book for a very important subject. We Americans MUST be well-informed about what is happening in Iraq. I like hearing from someone who has been there - not just a talking head.

I've read several books about the War in Iraq for research projects and papers. American Heroes is by far the most clear and interesting one yet. It explains every military term, event, treaty, etc. clearly and fully. It's very informative and well written. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the events leading up to the War in Iraq and the events during.

People often forget the price of freedom and it seems that the people who complain the loudest about the sacrifices are the one that have never had skin in the game. Thank you Colonel for keeping the reality of the situation forefront and honest. Semper Fi!

So many times people forget the day to day sacrifices that are being made by these brave soldiers. People become complacent and fall in to the trap of listening to what is fed to them by the media. This book recounts the true stories of bravery told by those whose lived through them. Col.North does an excellent job of bringing these stories to life. These stories are a testament to the necessary and vital work being done by our military to keep us all free and safe. These 'American Heroes', serve with Honor and that ideal is what so many can never understand. The stories and pictures in this book, will help people realize that our military personnel consider it a privilege to serve this great nation. Now more than ever, we need to hear these stories and remember what it is we are trying to defend against.

Reading American Heroes reminds me of why I'm proud to be an American. Oliver North provides an objective, journalistic review of what it takes to keep America free...sacrifice. Every one of these brave young men and women described, and even the ones that aren't, are Real American Heroes. Bravo Colonel for telling us (and showing us with these incredible photos) the truth about the Iraq War !
