The iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Store (4th Edition)

There is no denying it: With the introduction of the iPod and iTunes, Apple changed the face of music. While the iPod and iTunes are user-friendly, figuring them out for the first time can be tricky. Plus, they can do way more than meets the eye. In this fully updated best-seller, award-winning author, Scott Kelby, delivers what users need to know to get up to speed fast on Apple's popular iPod digital audio players and iTunes software.

Through full-color illustrations and simple step-by-step instructions, readers will learn all about: the brand new iPod touch, equipped with a multitouch interface, 3.5-inch widescreen display, and WiFi Web browsing; the iPod shuffle, sporting a new belt clip and new colors; the iPod nano, featuring a new glamorous square shape, video, an enhanced interface, larger and brighter display, and new colors; the iPod classic which now incorporates iTunes cover flow, enhanced interface, and a sleeker design; and the new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, which now lets iPod users browse the iTunes Store and purchase music over a wireless connection straight onto their Apple mobile device.

Scott also provides the basics of how to share music between Macs and PCs; sync iTunes-created playlists as well as iPod-created voice notes; burn large playlists to CDs; download and watch videos; and more. Best of all, Scott has peppered the guide with tons of time-saving tips and tricks that typically can only be gleaned through hard-won experience.

Pointless. There's absolutely nothing in the book that can't easily be found in the on-line manual. Luckely, I borrowed it at the library. Don't waste your money on this. Kelby has written a couple of good books (and some really bad ones too), this is not one of them.

Easy-to-follow instructions and photos make learning quick and easy especially if you're new to itunes. Highly recommended for those who wish to maximize use of their ipod. Great supplement to the on-line manual.

This was better than anticipated. Easy and concise and a must read by all Ipod users.

Honestly, I did not find this book to be one bit helpful. I personally thought it all to be redundant information. It may be of use if you are COMPLETELY technologically unaware... It's really just a waste of money. Go and buy yourself some lemonade instead. =]

(Hide Review...)  not worth the money

I was very disappointed in this book, which really doesn't even contain as much information as the online manual. I bought it when I was having trouble with my iPod and needed to know more than the manual explained; I know there are good books out there with this information, but this is definitely not one of them. For example, there are five steps listed in the manual that you can go through in order to reset or restore an errant iPod; this book lists only the first, simplest step, and never even mentions the possibility that it might not fix the problem, much less what to do in that case. Don't waste your money on this one.

(Hide Review...)  from vinyl to turntable to computer to iTunes & iPod

I'm 'over 50' and not a techy, so I have struggled with each step of this journey to transfer my vinyl collection to MP3 format. At last I am down to the iPod & iTunes portion. Without this book, I would have been dead in the water. Scott Kelby explains both iPod & iTunes with humor and clarity. It is very easy to use the table of contents to go right to the issue at hand. I also did a quick read-through and found all sorts of things I would NEVER have figured out on my own. It has made iPod and iTunes fun to use. I highly recommend this book.

I don't believe the question and answer format is proper for first time users of iPod.

This is an excellent book for iPod owners. It very simply presents each topic on a separate page with a color photo at the top.

For another excellent book, take a look at iPod Fully Loaded. This book is great! It tells you exactly how to put virtually anything onto your iPod. These two books are all you need. Buy them both.

Once again Scott Kelby has done it all! This is the perfect book for a new iPod user - particularly the iPod touch. Apple has horrid directions enclosed with the iPod, but Kelby makes it wonderfully clear in his own humerous style! Apple didn't even tell me how to turn the iPod on and off - had to buy this book just for that! LOL

I got my iPod after playing with my grandson's last year. I was able to master the basics of downloading songs from itunes, but that was the extent of my knowledge. Everything else confused me. I was still happy with my iPod even though I knew I wasn't using all the features.

The iPod Book has changed my life. I especially like that you don't have to read the whole book to learn what you want! (I DID read the whole book because it was so easy to understand) Each topic is on it's own page. You don't have to flip back and forth to learn how to do things. He includes screen prints so that you can see what he is talking about. The instructions are easy to understand. Even this old grandma could do it.

Some of the cool things I already knew that you could do - I just couldn't understand the iPod instructions. Other things I had no idea my iPod would do! I didn't know that I could use my iPod as a portable hard drive (very useful!).

Last month, I didn't understand how to make a great playlist. I understood the concept, but didn't understand the benefits. Now, I have a playlist for short drives (just a few of my favorite songs), a playlist for my daily treadmill jaunt, and a playlist that plays the best songs when I am working my horse in the arena.

Another benefit is I learned how to blend the songs so there is no dead space between songs.

I've really learned a lot from this book! Too many things to list.

I think both novice and experts will learn from this book.

Let me start by saying I like Scott Kelby, and I have the credit card statements to prove it.

But with these books he's just phoning it in. Along with the Gen-X har har humor (lots of "Hey" and "eh?" and "ya know" to give you that folksy feeling) you would like a little meat. There are about 60 pages devoted to Playlists, which are pretty much self-explanatory, and only two very sketchy pages about syncing iTunes with an iPod, which can be pretty frustrating if your preferences aren't set just right. Interested in Podcasts? Scott pretty much breezes over it. For example, in the Podcast part of the Library, what are the blue dots next to some of the Podcast titles? What are the checkmarks? Do the checkmarks determine which podcast episodes get synced? I'm not entirely sure, and you won't find out from reading this book.

I had hoped to find out why some music can be dragged to the iPod icon on the left while others cannot. Apparently it has something to so with the preferences and how much autonomy you give iTunes to automatically sync music.

If you have the iPod Touch, you might want to know about the multi-touch gestures. How do you zoom in or out? Nothing here that I could find. What about the hints that pop up inside the web address screen? I'd love to know how to use them, but Scott either doesn't know or thinks I must already know. Maybe he wants me to buy his iPhone book to learn these things.

Also, I couldn't find any mention of the MP3 downloads available here on Amazon that cost less and are not encumbered with DRM.

All in all, I found the book a little too breezy and boostery. Too much space allocated to easy stuff like accessories and visualizations, not enough space devoted to the effects of preferences and complexities of syncing. Admittedly this is just me and those who bought an iPod yesterday may well find it useful.

(Hide Review...)  You don't need a book to use your iPod...or do you?

Hey, I'm a Scott Kelby fan, but I thought surely I don't need a book to use my iPod and iTunes. I was wrong. Sure, I had all the basics down. Everything was working fine. Until I picked up this book and found out what I was missing.

Do you use Smart Playlists? Do you understand them? Do you know where your library is and how to back it up? Is your sound equalized?

Whether you have an old-style iPod or the newest Nano or iTouch, this book covers it all. In an organized, easy-to-understand way. Take your iPod and iTunes to the next level.

(Hide Review...)  I don't even own my own ipod

I got this book for my husband so he could learn how to make the most of his new itouch. I've ended up using it several times since it's arrival three days ago helping my sons learn how to use their new ipods and navigate itunes. The brief and to-the-point explanations along with great graphics and pictures make it easy to understand. Scott Kelby's humor makes it fun to read even when itunes makes me want to scream. It's easy to use the book as just a reference since topics are easy to find through the table of contents or index. However, taking the time to read it through provides helpful bits of information that create "aha" moments (like why the itouch was never fully charging when connected to the computer all night- USB ports have no power so when the computer powers down so does the itouch- AHA!). It's the best ipod accessory we have.
