| iPod Book : Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Music Store, The (2nd Edition) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
There are basically two kinds of iPod books: (1) The "tell me all about it" kind, which includes in-depth discussions on compression algorithms, debates about analog vs. digital equalizers; and tutorials on how to export your playlist in Unicode format. (2) There's this book. It's not a "tell me all about it" book, it’s a "show me how to do it" book.
Award-winning author Scott Kelby shows you step-by-step how it's all done, using the same casual, plain-English style that has made him one of the world's best-selling technology authors. You'll learn how to do only the most important, most requested, and just plain cool things you're going to want to do with your iPod–so you can start having fun with it today. Right now!
Each page covers just one topic, complete with full color photos, making it easy to find just what you're looking for fast. Plus, it shows you how to get the most from the iTunes Music Store, how to integrate your iPod into your car, which iPod accessories are hot, how to use photos with your iPod, and everything you need to know about the latest addition to the iPod family, the new iPod Nano! It's all here–in the only book of its kind–and you're gonna love it! |

This book could have been more helpful if the author had kept his attempt at humor down to a dull roar and actually explain things a little more clearly. In the end, I just called itunes and figured stuff out on my own.

The iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Music Store (2nd Edition)Having purchased quit a few Scott Kelby books and not even knowing how to turn an ipod on,I once again put my trust in Scott for my introduction into the world of ipod. True to form, Scott, along with his usual humour and plain instructional writing, I can now mix with the experts in ipod technology. A very good easy read.

Great book, if you never had an Ipod before. Covers the basics simply and easily. If you have any basic questions, buy this book USED, get some great tips, and be ahead of the game with the tips from the book and not the cost of a new book.

This is a great little book that provides lots of good information about the iPod that you don't find in the limited manual that comes with your unit. I was surprised to see an old aquaintance of mine (Terry White) mentioned as a contributer to the book. He is a great guy who I knew would go places.

I bought this book after seeing it in a Circuit City. I was kicking myself because I didn't buy it right then, I went home, ordered it off of Amazon and I love this book!!! I ordered it for my parents and sister as well and they love it too. It is a simple, well laid out book with a lot of humor and very easy to read. I like the pictures because I am a visual learner. Usually I don't like all the "tech junk" but my 12 year old daughter and I learned a lot about our IPOD's with this book. It is a great book and I like the fact that it is an easy read with straight forward "fixes" I am sure that some of this stuff is in an owners manual, but who wants to read that and try to figure out what they are talking about when you can get right to the point? GREAT BOOK!!!

Reading through the book before I first tried to use my iPod made all the difference in the world - both from a comfort level and saving time during the first few days. Since then, some of my issues were resolved, but some do not seem to be addressed in the book, although I've found answers elsewhere. For instance, I listen to audiobooks, but found that when I would turn on the iPod, my place in the book was not saved and I had to relisten to segments to get back to the right point. Logging into iTunes and looking at their online help gave me my answer - press the wheel's middle and you get a way to navigate within chapters. So, if you have never used an iPod before, this book will help orient you - although you may need other resources for troubleshooting.

This book has been THE thing that made me go from hating my iPod to LOVING it! I wasn't planning on getting an iPod; it was given to me as a gift. I am pretty good with computers and technology in general, but I really had a hard time figuring out some of the basics with the iPod! (Oh, I know... Apple stuff is all supposed to be so "intuitive"-- well, I didn't find it to be so!)
This book is PERFECT. Every little thing you might want to figure out how to do on your iPod (or in iTunes) is laid out simply, with great pictures and screen prints so you can SEE what the author's talking about. And author Scott Kelby throws in liberal doses of humor to make it all the more enjoyable. Best of all, each topic is just ONE PAGE LONG. Want to know how to do something? Go to that one page, read it, and you've got it! No wading through long, boring chapters of info, or dry manuals. Topics go from the utterly basic (but necessary) "Turning Your iPod on and Off" (there is no "On/Off" button, you know!), and "Turning on the Backlight" to the more complicated "Moving Playlists Between Computers" and "Editing a Song's Start/End Points"-- the things that will really give you great enjoyment once you figure them out! And did I mention each topic is ONLY ONE PAGE? That's the key to this great book. I highly recommend it! We keep it in a drawer right next to our computer and go back to it again and again. One last thing: my nine-year-old has read the book from cover-to-cover, and is now quite the expert on his iPod! The perfect handbook for any age, and for any technological level. (Also covers all models of iPod). (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-03 07:51:23 EST)

Great book! Love the writing style. It's like reading a personal e-mail from a friend and is so easy to understand. I don't do well with manuals, as a rule. I'll purchase Mr. Kelby's books in the future without hesitation.

I just want to thank the author,Scott Kelby for making this an easy step by step how-to book for iPod users. Thanks for using 'user friendly lingo' in your book! I can't believe how much easier it is to use my iPod now and how many features I am now using on my computer as well as my iPod. Great reference!

I bought this book because of the format - each page has a set of instructions for how to do one thing, ensuring that it is kept simple and concise. I have had a video iPod since Christmas 2005 and could figure out enough to make playlists, download, and rip but knew no other tricks. My library now looks cleaner, misspelled titles/artists are now corrected, and I know how to better organize my over 6000 songs.
Excellent resource and easy-to-use. It's worth every penny. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-07 06:08:38 EST)

I gave my 14 year old daughter the new video iPod for her birthday, and got her this book too. (I was familiar with Scott Kelby, being a Photoshop user.) Kelby's casual style and superbly slick presentation quickly overcame her initial reluctance at having to read a book to learn how to work with her new iPod. I'm a professional programmer, but not an iPod user myself, so I found the book extremely handy when she needed help with something. An excellent book at a very modest price. If you're already familiar with Kelby's Photoshop books, you'll know just what to expect. If you aren't, you'll quickly see why he's become the top-selling author of technical books.

This is a very thorough reference for any member of iPod nation. I took a copy of the first edition out from my local library and found a multitude of functions I was unaware of and many handy tips and shortcuts. I thought to copy a couple of items for future reference and next thing I knew decided having the whole book was more practical than making copies of half the pages. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book had been updated and was also glad to find it less expensive on Amazon than at my local bookstore.
If you use your iPod on any kind of regular basis, this is a book you will refer to regularly for problem-solving, shortcuts and helpful hints. You can go directly to problem solutions if necessary, or review sections for a complete understanding of all the things your iPod can do. I intend to use my iPod for years to come, I'll even replace it with another if necessary, and this book will be able to give me information and solutions to queries on an ongoing basis. This is a very cool little book. Mr. Kelby describes numerous things that can be done with your Ipod. In fact, there are more things possible than I can possibly ever use.
After reading this book, I finally learned a few of the many hidden features of the unit. This was certainly easier than trying to get through the entire owner's manual. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-26 09:16:57 EST)

I learned the basics of my iPod using Apple's instructions but mostly trial and error. Found this book and have learned much more. I've recommended it to friends. It's great book to get when you get an iPod; Scott Kelby gives one a jump-start getting used to the 'pod, then fills out w/ lots of detailed and clear information on "how-to" do everything.

I just finished reading this last night- ANSWERED SO MANY QUESTIONS for both a new and old iPod user. I learned how to merge songs (songs on CD's with an Intro), learned about all the settings, enhancing sound quality, using the sound check (so the next song that comes on doesn't blast you out), changing defaults, setting up customized playlists, using iTunes. I LOVED the authors honesty take on accessories, and he even lists a few faults with the iPod. GREAT resource! And the guy who wrote it is funny as HECK!

Bought the book originally for my son to help him with his new Christmas gift, the 30G iPod. As I read through the book - I ended up buying a similar iPod for myself. The book has been a great resource for me -- I'm not as quick as my son in picking up "how to do cool stuff." Scott's approach is informative and funny -- and you can bounce around different areas depending on your interest. Great book!

Just got my Video iPod for Christmas and really had no idea what to do next. I managed to download a couple of songs on my own and thought... so what's this big iPod craze about? Then I bought this book and Scott Kelby, with his great sense of humor, taught me tons of tips and tricks I probably would have taken months to learn on my own. Although he suggests that you will only read the chapters you need at the time you need them, I had no trouble reading this like a novel. Now I love my iPod and I truly appreciate Scott Kelby's wit and insight.

This is only for the super novice. I was very disappointed. He tells you to back up your iTunes on CD's, for example, which is stupid. Backing up on DVD's is much, much faster, preserves the name tags, and is the only way to go. Skimpy on the playlist section, and too much of his "aren't I clever" small talk. Not worth it.

OK... I finally joined the cult of the iPodders this month. I'm not a music fanatic like others I know, but there are some podcasts I really should be listening to. So, with iPod in hand, I started working my way through The iPod Book by Scott Kelby. He did a really nice job on this, and I think I know what I'm doing now...
Contents: I Can't Help Myself - The Chapter for People Who Must Play a Song Right Now; The Outsiders - How to Work the Stuff on the Outside of Your iPod; Pod's Theme - iPod Essentials; It's Tricky - Cool iPod Tips & Tricks; Cars - Using the iPod in Your Car; Get the Freeze-Frame - Using Your iPod's Photo Features; Home Sweet Home - iTunes Essentials; Imaginary Player - Playlists and Smart Playlists; Proof of Purchase - Using the iTunes Music Store; Tip Drill - Cool iTunes Tips; Add It On - iPod Accessories (and the iTunes Phone); Get the Lido Shuffle - How to Use Apple's iPod shuffle; Cast of Angels - How to Download (and Create Your Own) Podcasts; Recommended Dose - A Peek at My Own Personal, Ultra-Secret, Yet Surprisingly Way-Cool Playlists; Index There were a number of things I enjoyed in this book... For one, the writing style has some great dry humor and wit. Each chapter is tied into some music, and it's Kelby's contention that editors never read the book and chapter forwards, and he can get away with stuff in there. So for some great humor, don't skip *any* of the intros. But the book is more than just a few laughs. He does a nice job covering the range of functionality that comes in the iPod, in iTunes, and in the large number of after-market add-ons you can buy for your new toy. Want to listen to your iPod from the car radio with no wiring? You can do that. Want to use your iPod as a voice recorder? Yup, it's there. Do you just want to use your iPod as your stereo system attached to a pair of high-end speakers? No problem... All that and more is covered. Since he covers all the different iPod models, you also don't have to worry that your iPod Nano (or Shuffle) will get short-changed. The book has great information regardless of your particular version. Each page has one complete tip or hint, so it's easy to scan for just what you're looking for. Throw in a number of iTips at the bottom of several pages, and even the most experienced iPodder will probably find something that causes him/her to say, "hey! didn't know you could do that!"... Maybe it's because I'm an iPod newbie and this was the first book that unlocked the possibilities for me. Regardless, I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it to anyone looking for something more in the way of information than what comes packaged with the unit... This book is a lot of fun, you could find just about everything in this book on various websites, but it is nice to have all the tips in one place. This is not going to tell you how to re-program an iPod or anything, so if that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere.
My only criticism of this book is that you can tell it was written over a few months time and that during those few months, the iPod lineup changed. This book could have done with a little editing to fix certain comments that imply the iPod nano is the latest iPod when the 5th generation came out more recently. Other than that, this is a great book for beginners and those who want to maximize their iPodding potential. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:45:58 EST)
