When I first got the book I wanted to read it cover to cover. I think the first several chapters are good to read in general but now I decided to just start writing my patent and I use the book as a reference, which is a big help! I couldn't have done it without the book, lots of information.

I am living proof that one can get his/her US patent application allowed by using the step by step instructions of this book. I never talked to a patent attorney except the examiner and do not have a legal background (especially the US legal system since I am not even an American), but still managed to get my patent.

Of course, you must always do your best to keep yourself abreast of any new rules which do happen often enough. But the USPTO's web site provides everything you need to know. You just have to make the effort. By all means, I am not saying that it is easy, especially when you come to the issue of unobviosness. What I'm saying is that if you study the book well and put your mind to it and have a good idea, you can get it patented without the help of a patent attorney.

The book is that good.

I have too many ideas and not enough time or money. Having the this book explains much of the patent process in precise and clear fashion that it saves me from going more mad. Every patent lawyer will tell you have an idea that can be patented, for a price of course. For very little cost one can learn, do your research and figure out whether or not you have a good idea. The book also explains how you do not always have to have a patent in order to make your money. I have an edition from 10 years ago, just bought the updated one and there is even more info, a great buy.

If you have any interest in pursuing a patent, whether you do it yourself or have an attorney do it, you MUST read this book. I have a stack of "inventor" books and patent books, and this one really stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is so comprehesive, and so clearly and well written, it might be all you need. Read it, underline it, and read it again. Even if you decide not to write your own patent, this book will help you understand the entire process, and make you better able to communicate with a patent attorney. The more you know and can communicate to your attorney, the stronger the patent you'll be able to secure. Equally as important is the possibility that you'll realize that you shouldn't proceed with getting a patent. That knowledge alone could save you many thousands of dollars. Get this book!

Takes me through the process step bz step, better than a text book, and I don't have to read from cover to cover to get the information that I need.

(Hide Review...)  A MUST HAVE for Inventors and Attorneys

I bought this book because a number of my clients that I respect owned the book and as a result they were knowledgeable and helpful in the filing process. While I cannot recommend that an inventor substitute this book in place of a patent attorney, I believe the content, the well-organized format, and unabiguous explanation of a complex process and product are well presented by this author. An informed client should not be viewed as a threat to a competent attorney but rather as an assest and means for obtaining the best possible product for the client. This book delivers the basics and more. I am recommending it to all my new clients. Kudos to Mr. Pressam for presenting challenging material in one easy to read reference. ONE WARNING: patent law is constantly changing and while the universal truths are represented in this books, new legislation cannot be ignored.

I know it's boring title for my review, but it's a great book. It came highly recommended to me by a very successful patent attorney, and it is a great book for a starting patent agent or attorney or for an inventor who wants to take a stab at patenting something on their own. I'd recommend it.

David Pressman's book is the number one book ever created for resource on patenting. However it doesnt just stop there, Pressman also talks about marketing, licensing, taxes, and other important aspects in the way of product development. If you want a very complete and concise book on patenting and inventing, this is the book to get, and there is no need to ever buy any other book on this matter, as he explains everything you will ever need to know.

(Hide Review...)  excellent book
Reviewer Permalink
This book is great for learning about the basics of patents. I can't really speak to its value for inventors directly (although I suspect it could be an excellent resource), because I read it from the perspective of someone interested in a career as a patent agent, but whose knowledge level on the subject was practically nil. I didn't find the reading to be always as entertaining or interesting as other reviewers have suggested, however I think that an audience of inventors and people planning to take the patent bar are probably a highly motivated group in general, and will find it is certainly not a chore to read either. As I moved on to studying the MPEP I've found that I return to the pages of Patent it Yourself often when I come across terminology that doesn't make sense or parts that seem unclear, and it has really helped. While it's not a stand alone resource for patent bar exam study (and is not intended to be), I've found it really helpful as a supplemental text, especially in the early stages of exam preparation. I recommend it highly to those who want to know more about what patents are, the different types of patents and alternative options such as trade secrets, what patents can and can't be used for, and how patents are obtained and maintained. If you're like me, then reading this book may also be a good way to start evaluating your interest in patents and intellectual property as a potential career option.

This book is thorough, well organized and easy to follow. Every bit of information contained it the book is valuable - no fluff or filler. I wouldn't pursue the patent search/application process without it. This book was highly recommended to me by a universtiy business librarian and it didn't take long to see why. Anyone seeking to apply for a patent will gain valuable knowledge by reading this book. It is worth every penny.

This book is thorough, well organized and easy to read. David Pressman saved me a lot of time, money, and heartache in that I discovered through reading his book that my product idea (computer program) falls under copyright instead of patent. This book was highly recommended to me by a universtiy business librarian. Although I am not going to pursue the idea that originally propelled me to buy the book, I do not regret the purchase. It was most definitely helpful.

Excellent book! I understand patents much better..... now I really value the time my patent attorney is spending to create a solid patent!
The book gives you enough information to write your own patent, however, I'm choosing to have the attorney do it anyway.

The book is crammed with useful tips and details for the do-it-yourself patent applicant. The patent process details are explained in a light-hearted but clear way that makes the book as fun to read as you could ask, given the level of technical and legal detail provided. An essential and extremely helpful book if you're serious about patenting your own inventions.

(Hide Review...)  Two Patents and more to come.

I've been issued two patents using Pressman's book. The patent office issued an office action on the first patent and I used an attorney to overcome the action. The second patent was issued on my first submission.
I am in the middle of prototyping a new product and cannot find my old copy of Patent It Yourself. My original copy was the 3rd or 4th addition so I will update to this newest edition.
If you are a technically inclined writer and use Pressman's step by step process doing it yourself is fairly easy.
But remember, getting a patent is easy, getting your product to market is the hard part.
