Speaking plainly and courageously about crime, punishment, and politics, this book demands to be read. --Rush Limbaugh, Political commentator, talk show host

With all of the bleeding heart liberals out there, it's refreshing and a relief to know that there is at least on person out there who knows how to treat criminals! Arpaio decided that building a new county jail was not worth the money (Criminals never are), yet he also decided that he needed more room so he could stop letting people out early due to overcrowding. He then built tent city which is a bunch of tents out in the Arizona desert. This is how American incarceration should be. Prison/Jail is not rehabilitation, not deterence, it is not intervention, it is punishment! Prisoners are supposed to be punished, not given all of the ridiculous serviced provided in jails/prisons today. It is risiculous that prisoners have a constitutional (actually it is judge made and not constitutional) right to health care, television, food, shelter, and cable television! Who reading this receives all of these for free? I never committed any crime and I don't get any of this for free, yet the scum bags who did have a right to all this. Joe Arpaio has taken sugar, salt, coffee, pepper, and porn out of his jail. He also banned cable but then found that there was a federal court order mandating that inmates recieve cable. Se he put in the discover channel, the disney channel, and public access. He even charges inmates a dollar a day for food and feeds them spoling bolognae. This is how incarceration should be but we can't offend the bleeding heart liberal idiots like the American Criminal Liberties Union ( some would call them the American Civil Liberties Union, but my favorite name is Anti-Christ League United). Thank God that Joe Arpaio has not backed down in the face of liberal pressure and has stood firm despite multiple lawsuits. JOE ARPAIO IS AN AMERICAN HERO. HE SHOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT, HE HAS MY VOTE! FOR THE RECORD, IF PEOPLE FIND THE ACCOMADATIONS AT TENT CITY SO DEPLORABLE, THEY CAN SIMPLY FOLLOW THE LAW NEXT TIME AND AVOID A RETURN VISIT!

Joe Arpaio has secured his place in law enforcement history as an innovator & a worthy public servant. August Vollmer, Sir Robert Peel, & Clarence Kelley now have a new member to their club. All cops & politicians should read & learn from Sheriff Arpaio's book & so should all business managers & executives. Sheriff Arpaio exemplifies unorthodox simplicity in the pursuit of public safety & budget effectiveness. It's no wonder that the liberals hate him!

and you will end up without a civilized society, which is basically what we have now. I am a criminal trial attorney with 25 years experience and 15,000 cases. Atty Robbins, who writes a review also, seems upset that criminals are being treated like criminals. What a novel idea the sheriff has !!! Obviously, the problem is that a lot of folks do not like to see criminals actually punished. And therein lies our problem. The problem is not with criminals as much as it is our unbelievable tolerance for them. The book is a great read for anyone who wishes to see criminal offenders pay for their crimes. People like Atty Robbins are outraged at the treatment the sheriff metes out to the offenders but is strangely and disturbingly silent about their victims.

We need more men like Mr. Arpaio. Today the government seems to go out of its way to define and protect "prisoner's rights," while lacking any hesitation to trample over the rights of us law-abiding citizens. Arpaio dispenses justice much like a dispassioned referee does at a football game - if you commit the offense, you recieve a penalty, and your sob stories don't buy you so much as a pillow mint.
His most vocal critic on this forum is someone who professes to be an attorney, but cannot spell properly or use words in their proper context. If you're thinking about buying this book, don't look to those of us who gave it 5 stars. Look to its staunchest critics. A bitterly angry critique that is not well-written - when floating alone in a population of praise - usually indicates that you've found a good read. Joe Arpaio is a blow hard, self-aggrandizing, ingoramus who has cost Maricopa County, Arizona tons of money pursuing his idiotic vision of "tough jails" and ham fisted policing. The problem with this system is that it is a proven failure. It punishes people who are presumed innocent and doesn't reduce recidivism. His book is what you would expect from a narcissistic moron. It toughts what a great guy he is and how smart he is while ignorring the preponderance of evidence which contradicts the claims.
I am a lawyer who sues Arpaio. I have used this book to cross examine him at trial and although it was useful for me, it is a self-serving myopic that is pretty dull. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-12 16:13:30 EST)

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is one of a kind. The best lawman in the United States. He has two goals: (1)lock up the thugs and do it as inexpensively as possible, and (2) make sure the losers don't want to come back to his jail. Every sheriff and police chief in the country should be required to takes lessons from Arpaio. In this book he explains, in very plain English, how he reaches his goals. Give 'em hell, Joe!!

This book takes a hard look at the criminal justice system in America and makes honest and realistic assesments. It offers proven solutions to the problems faced by law enforcement agencies nationwide. It is well known that people of the liberal persuesion dislike Sherrif Joe Arpaio, but the PEOPLE of Arizona have given him the highest approval rating of any law enforcement official in the country. This speaks for itself.

The title suggested that this would be a action based expose of a dynamic law enforcer. Instead it turned out to be a book about prison policy. The writer is apparently a sheriff and they have some control over local jails.
Most of the book is a description of how the author wanted to keep more people in jail but he had a shrinking corrections budget. He basically set up a concentration camp for low level offenders. (More serious offenders appear to have been kept in a normal jail) The author has purchased a series of tents and set up a wired perimeter. Around this he has a few guards, enough to keep people in but not the normal number you would have in a prison. To complete the economy measures he has reduced the amount of money spent on food. The average cost of meal provision is 30cents. To be able to have such cheap food the author has to purchase food that is not for sale on the normal market. Meat sausage that has turned green and the like. The writer has then spent most of his time showing news reporters from current affairs shows around his new prison. All of this could only happen in America. Some of the book is humerous in a bizarre way. Thus the author restricted the types of films available to prisoners. He for instance was keen for them to see promotional material for conservative politicans. He allowed the prisoners to see one "drama" a corny old film called "Old Yella". This film is about a loyal dog which dies in the end role. The author was of a view that this was a touching and moving film. The prisoners however thought that the film was so bad they cheered when the dog died. The author to pay them back banned all "drama's". I'm a bit with the prisoners on this issue. The author basically seems to be a person keen on publicity and is willing to use the vulnerable, prisoners in his care to achieve his ends. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 16:30:22 EST)

If you want to read the story behind the U.S. Sheriff with the highest approval rating, then this is the book for you. A man that has made being in jail exactly what it should be, a punishment, not a country club with cable t.v and nautilus. Sheriff Joe has sent out a clear and concise message, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime" The Law abiding citizens of America salute you!
